Alright alright a vent post here we go

Finishing my yearly rewatch of Steven Universe and the tv episode of Future once again reminded me of how useless I feel, like, all the time? Nobody ever asks me for help because what can I offer, a drawing?

There was a time years ago when a friend's partner refused to accept my FB invitation because he only wants to be FB friends with people who can be useful to him, and I thought, that's fair, I am not very helpful after all.

All my skill points went into art and education but I can only use those to help myself and not others, not really. I needed that because I was alone and had to take care of myself, but right now that's no longer the case, and without other skills I am basically dooming myself to isolation. (Ironically I can survive that just fine, but it would be better to have company).

I keep saying to myself that we live in shitty times and some people really need to see a silly or cute drawing every now and then. Not so long ago someone commented on my art post with a simple "I needed that" and this made me feel so fucking accomplished. So maybe I shall just continue doing what I'm good at.

I have visited seven fandom conventionts this summer, and at one of them I had a friend around to take goofy photos of me. But most of the time I go there alone and walk around alone. I love conventions, but the loneliness starts to overshadow all the good parts of the experience.

I can't wait to go to the Berlin gig and potentially meet some of my mutuals from tumblr, but will I handle it? I am so used to being on my own, I'm genuinely afraid I will do or say something wrong and ruin everything.

I don't even know anymore. I think I'm tired and in a bad mood. Maybe I should draw something extremely self-indulgent just to feel better.

POTO UK Tour - Initial Thoughts on the Christines!

I’ve had a tonne of asks about my opinions on the UK Tour Christines so I’m going to post them in 1 go so that I am not repeating myself. Obviously the tour has only been open for a week so these are very early opinions and I’m sure both performers will continue to become even better in the role. That being said I think Holly-Anne Hull and Anouk van Laake are excellent Christines already (I feel qualified to say that having seen 15 different actresses play the role!).

Holly-Anne Hull

Vocals - I would class Holly-Anne Hull as more of your ‘musical theatre’ type Christines (see Katie Hall, Olivia Brereton, Lisa-Anne Wood). This is by no means a bad thing! Her upper register is strong throughout and I never got the impression that she was struggling with the score. I’d say she was perhaps a little more conventiontional than Anouk. I got major Sierra Boggess vibes from her vocally a few times throughout the show, particularly during her Think of Me. 

Acting - Holly-Anne plays a very innocent Christine. She begins as coming across very passive, but by the Final Lair becomes stronger, although I still got a sense of helplessness from her during this scene. Her and Rhys have a really cute relationship; I think it’s difficult to sell the Roaul/Chrstine ship but these two have nailed it already! Some of my favourite moments of HAH Christine: following Carlotta’s every move during Think of Me, her giggling during AIAOY and telling Roaul to shush when we was confessing his love for her because she was embarrassed and her very seductive and saucy Aminta in PONR. 

Overall, I think she is a solid Christine and I am excited to see where she takes the role. 

Anouk van Laake

Ok - confession time. I was initially on the fence about Anouk’s Christine. Immediately after the show I was sure I’d preferred HAH as Christine but I really can’t stop thinking about Anouk’s interpretation! Please be aware that my thoughts are from her first ever performance in the role!

Vocals - Your more classical sounding Christine. Very different vocally to what I’ve heard before. Her upper register is outstanding. I can’t put my finger on it, she sounded unique, different. My problem initially was that she lacked volume in a number of scenes - I was sat Row G Stalls and couldn’t hear what she was saying/singing on a few occasions. This did get better in Act 2 so perhaps it was down to first performance nerves. Her Wishing has outstanding and her ToM cadenza was one of the best versions of the Brightman/Broadway cadenza I’ve heard to this date:  it was just different. 

Acting - Again, on reflection, I think Anouk’s take on the role was highly interesting. I’ve woken up thinking about things she had done during the show. However, again, this was inconsistent, hence my reservations to begin with. The growth with her Christine was much more noticeable. She had a very child-like maturity: her giggling at Carlotta and Andre during ToM, her ‘Things have changes, Roaul” lacked any sense of panic and showed her naivety. By Act 2 her Christine became much stronger which led to one of the feistiest final lairs I’ve seen: loved her cries of “No” when Roaul was caught in the lasso, her anger during tears of hate and “You deceived me!!” and her not being afraid of stepping up to the Phantom. Anouk has a very expressive face. She uses this well during MOTN, but in some scenes this was lacking and she came across as emotionless.  

Overall, my initial conclusions were wrong about Anouk. Upon reflection there were a lot more nuances in her performance which made her feel really different from other Christines I’ve seen. I think she will end up being a highly interesting Christine once those inconsistencies have been ironed out.

If you see either Holly-Anne Hull or Anouk van Laake you’re in for a great show. Very different interpretations but both valid and interesting.

I understand the impulse to emphasize that a female character is not pretty or at least not in a conventional way... For women writing female characters, it can be a way of pointing out that being pretty doesn't matter, that you can be attractive without being conventionally beautiful or that being attractive doesn't have to do with your value. People like to deemphasize prettiness in favor of quirkieness, cleverness, or kindness, to humanize the character and make their personality more important than how they look. However. Every time a writer bluntly describes, in narration, a female character as simply 'not pretty' I kinda want to roll my eyes? First of all, girls don't have to be anywhere near conventiontally attractive to be pretty as hell. Secondly, defining them as 'not pretty' is still talking about their looks only now you're being rude. I think the solution is probably just to describe their features as much as you feel the need to without using the narration to pass judgment on if they're pretty or not. If another character's opinion is relevant that's one thing, but there's no reason for the narration to say 'Janet was not pretty.' It doesn't affect what I think of Janet. It affects what I think of the writer.

Lol, the dark haired guy in this is Brian, the guy who was kind of compared to Harry in that other Queer as Fuck scene, where that Hunter kid was compared to JJ.

Well, this is the blonde boyfriend, and you might be able to pick up what he meant by non-conventional.

But the funny thing is, this couple is probably one of the longest lasting in the show, together for the show’s whole run, all six seasons. 

You can tell they do love each other, from the way they both smiled at each other and kept eye contact after the blonde came home from his overseas business trip.

I love how warm their love here, even here, just a look and a smile.

Queer as Folk was a crazy show. It was aimed pretty much solely at gay audiences, advertised on gay community radio, in gay neighbourhoods, in clubs and bars, because that is the audience they were going for. Even in modern TV, gay characters aren’t really that sexual, a gay sex scene is not shown in the same way straight scenes are, because they don’t want to spook the rest of the audience. Queer as Folk had no problems with that. Crazy to think this show was from the late 90’s/early 2000’s.

Also, on the scene. Would anyone in your series be okay with walking in on their partner doing this after being away on a work trip? Would this type of relationship, committed and loving, suit anyone?
