I am so incredibly excited to say I have been awarded a City Artist Corps Grant. Labor Day weekend will be my 20 year anniversary in NYC and I’m so very grateful to my city and NYFA for making this possible after such an incredibly challenging time. I’m also honored to be counted among so many other talented NYC artists many of whom I have worked with and followed for years. I can’t wait to see what everyone has to show. For my part the funds will go toward the continuation of the Splendid Queens project, an exploration and celebration of my favorite borough, including a presentation of my work sometime in October. The New York State Pavilion was designed and built for the 1964 Worlds Fair. It was designed by the famed modernist (and probable racist) architect Philip Johnson, whose only Toronto building I work in. Nine years later it still stands in Flushing Meadows in a state of managed decay. Site specific sculpture in Queens, NY @lauralappi @nycparks On view thru Sept 2021 . This is Laura Lappi's second site-specific work that explores notions of home, belonging, loneliness and yearning. With this sculpture, Lappi draws attention to immigrant communities and their living conditions in Queens. . Her sculpture, titled “7 x 7 (Hope),” consists of a black wooden house structure built with space between each beam. The public will be able to see through it but will not be able to get inside, the house has no windows or doors. The size of the sculpture is seven feet long, five feet wide, and seven feet high, referring to the size of the small, illegal, basement room. .
