by blue like winter (bleucommelhiver) There is envy and rage in his heart when Somnus strikes down his brother — sword impaled through chest, through flesh and crack of bones until the throne room’s marble floor and his brother’s body becomes one. There is envy and rage and Somnus can feel it coursing through his veins, an ebrious thrum of power fueled by the thrill of battle and righteous fear, but why, then, does his hands tremble so in the quiet brilliance of dawn? A story of the first Kings of Lucis, both true and false, and the first Oracle to commune with the Gods. Cosmogony Preview
[July 13th, M.E. 773
Begin transcription:
Annals of Lucis Part Seventeen as recorded by Councilman Ignis Stupeo Scientia]
Contrary to what is likely to become popular belief, Noctis Lucis Caelum CXIV was not a natural-born warrior, but rather a reluctant leader who never had an opportunity to reach his full potential. Even as of this recording, tales of King Noctis’ kindness are spreading throughout Lucis, hand-in-hand with stories of his grand defeat of the Starscourge and The Immortal Accursed.
What these tales do not address--nor perhaps should they, when the people of Lucis require stability and heroic figures now more than ever--is that His Majesty struggled for quite some time to accept the burden the gods placed on his shoulders.
A little teaser for my submission to @cosmogonyzine, which is now open for pre-orders! Every part of this zine is gorgeous and fantastic, and if you like FFXV, I highly recommend grabbing a copy!

A snippet of my fic for @cosmogonyzine 's Starscourge era. I was drawn to this project because of the opportunity to explore unseen parts of the history of Eos and its people.
Preorders are open until Sept 23 at https://cosmogonyzine.bigcartel.com
He moved with practiced caution, knowing that his quarry may flee at the slightest disturbance.
And what quarry it was, antlers each the length of a man’s arm span, hide of white with only the faintest grey markings. He had journeyed many days to find the beast, since he had first heard the tale spreading among the hunters, he had known that the prize must be his. He wore a cloak of grey Coeurl fur, taken from a previous conquest, pulled close against the morning chill. Spear grasped in a calloused hand, he wore a machete at his hip and a second, shorter knife next to it.
Above all, he carried an unshakable faith, not merely in the Gods above, nor in his own skill, but in the balance of the world and his place within it. There was magic in the land. The spirits would guide him, he need only listen.

Tomb Raiders
After sitting on the finished piece since March of this year, I can finally reveal my contribution to @cosmogonyzine! While it was admittedly tough to keep this under wraps for so long, the wait was 10000000% percent worth it—the final book is a truly a work of art and I feel honored to have my art included alongside the rest of the incredibly talented writers and artists featured in it. More details and photos under the cut!
My goal for 2019 was to get into a zine, and an opportunity presented itself in January of this year when @cosmogonyzine opened up their applications. I had my doubts that I would get in because my sole concept—Ignis and Talcott raiding the royal tombs during the Long Night—revolved around characters that I didn’t initially associate with the topic of Cosmogony. But the mods assured me they could make my concept work for the zine, and I am sincerely indebted to them for their support and belief in my idea!
Tumblr media
At first, my idea was to have them wading through water (perhaps in Cartanica’s tomb?). But when I actually opened up the game and surveyed the layout of the tombs, I realized everything I wanted to include (the entrance, the sarcophagus, the statues) would require too much real estate on the page to make rendering water worth it. Although I quickly abandoned the water idea, you can see in the image above that many other elements—Talcott carrying a book and flashlight, Ignis reaching out to touch a statue—carried through to the end.
Tumblr media
The inside of the Royal Tombs are actually quite interesting with some exquisites architectural features that I really wanted to include in the final piece (especially the ceiling). I have to give credit to both @dizzymoogle and @metapoodle for capturing some reference images for me using Ansel—they were invaluable, thank you!
Tumblr media
I took a painterly approach with this piece, which is an effect I love but something that is pretty far outside my comfort zone. I could point out all the things I would have done differently, but I’m still really proud of how it all came together and if I had more time I would definitely practice this style more. As you can see above, Talcott was initially much smaller—I became more mindful of how hard it would be to see things that were too small once the final piece was printed in the book, so I eventually increased the size of both Ignis and Talcott as well as the sarcophagus.
Tumblr media
I do feel like the final composition came out a bit cramped on behalf of making everyone a little bigger, but this whole piece was a great learning experience for me and I definitely took a lot away from it that I can apply to future pieces. This was how it looked right before I added the final colors—I think the sepia tone has its own bit of charm!
Once again, I can’t thank the mods of this wonderful zine enough and I really hope to work again with everyone in the future! ♡♡♡

The Dawn and the Night Sky
“…and the True King banished the Darkness once and for all, returning Light to Eos,” Ignis speaks into the recorder in his hands. “The King made—” he continues, but the words catch in his throat. He pauses the recorder.
It’s silent in his study now, except for the tick-tock of the wall clock. Ignis takes a few deep breaths. It’s alright, you’re alright, he tells himself.
Once he feels grounded enough, he returns to the task at hand, turning the recorder back on. “The King,” he starts over, “made one final sacrifice. He gave his life for his people, for the future of Eos. His sacrifice opened a new era; we call it the Dawn of a New Age.”
He switches off the recorder.
Happy birthday to our best boy ✫ Noct ✫! Such a wonderful day to post a preview of my piece "The Dawn and the Night Sky" for the @cosmogonyzine!!
...Although I'm ashamed to admit the story's about his...death-day and not his birthday. Oops...
The Cosmogony zine is open for pre-orders ✫ here ✫ This zine is absolutely gorgeous; it’s just like you would imagine a storybook in the world of Eos!
