NIKI RELEASES NEW ALBUM 'BUZZ' & SHARES TITLE TRACK MV
Rosa Gulliver of TINYGMUSIC | 9th August 2024
Tumblr media
Jakarta-born, LA-based singer-songwriter and producer NIKI firmly plants herself as one of the most dynamic artists of today with the release of her new album Buzz via 88rising, out now. Accompanying the release is the music video for title track “Buzz,” directed by Isaac Ravishankara. The video, a cheeky line-by-line depiction of the lyrics, encapsulates the rush of raw emotion and bittersweet nerves of a budding romance – glimpses of buzzing bees, a crackling guitar amp, and longing looks between two people, all signaling towards the start of something new. NIKI was initially inspired to name the record after the budding growth she observed in her garden every spring. Across thirteen tracks on the album, the singer encapsulates the feeling of being on the precipice of something undiscovered.

The album’s release joins previous singles; the love struck summer track, “Tsunami,” astrologically-inspired song “Blue Moon,” and flirty lead single “Too Much of a Good Thing.” NIKI plans to celebrate Buzz with a comprehensive world tour, produced by Live Nation, kicking off this fall. Tickets are available now HERE. See below for full routing.

What eventually became Buzz, the third studio album by singer-songwriter and globally-renowned star NIKI, started with an urgent quake from the innermost core of her being. What surfaced in its wake was a collection of warm, stirring folk-rock songs, which crackle and flare like a bonfire between close confidantes. “I went through an identity crisis,” says the 25-year-old of Buzz. “It took a lot of trial and error, and I just stumbled upon pieces of myself along the way. I named it Buzz because it feels like I'm on the precipice of something about to happen.”

For NIKI, things have been happening progressively since she was a high schooler in Jakarta, Indonesia. As a student at an international academy, she cut her teeth scribbling lovesick poems in English class and performed acoustic guitar covers of American pop songs on YouTube. With a six-string in hand, and her family and classmates cheering her on from the audience, Nicole Zefanya then staked her claim to global stardom as NIKI.

And claim it she has - with over three billion streams worldwide, sold out shows on multiple continents, massive sets at festivals across the globe, front row seats at Paris Fashion Week, four songs on a Marvel film’s soundtrack, and some of the most phenomenal, confessional songs being released in 2024, NIKI has already established a veteran’s resume before the age of 25.

On Buzz, her songwriting remains as intimate as ever. In her initial sketches of songs for Buzz, NIKI took cues from other lane-paving women with confessional, honest lyricism soundtracked by guitars.  “Joni Mitchell is my songwriting north star,” she says — and uncompromising feminist luminaries like Stevie Nicks, Carly Simon and Liz Phair. To match the wandering spirit of Buzz, NIKI cultivated her own elastic approach to guitar.

To further harness this creative and personal sea change, NIKI began enlisting producers who had worked with her favourite contemporary singer-songwriters. She tapped Tyler Chester, who’d captured tracks with Madison Cunningham and Sara Bareilles; she also recruited Ethan Gruska, who counts Fiona Apple and Phoebe Bridgers as collaborators.
Buzz reverberates with the hard-earned wisdom of a young woman who charges dauntlessly towards her dreams — but can still spare a laugh if she stumbles.
About NIKI
NIKI born Nicole Zefanya on January 24 1999, is an Indonesian singer-songwriter. She is currently based in the United States and signed with the record label 88rising. She released her first full-length studio album, Moonchild, in 2020. It was followed by Nicole (2022) and recently Buzz (2024). Her debut headlining concert tour, Nicole World Tour (2022–2023), visited over 40 cities across North America, Asia, Australia, and Europe.
NIKI has garnered global recognition for her songwriting and musicianship and is among the most popular female artists from Indonesia. In 2020, NIKI was listed among Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia.
About 88rising
88rising, stylised as 88⬆, is an American record label established in 2015, known as a multifaceted entity combining management, record label functions, video production, and marketing.
The label has risen to prominence as a music platform and record label, especially for Asian American artists, and has been dubbed "The Disney of Asian hip-hop." In 2019, 88rising earned the title of Label of the Year from Netease, a major music streaming service in China.
In 2018, 88rising launched its inaugural Head in the Clouds Festival in Los Angeles, which Billboard promptly recognized as "the Asian Festival You Need To Know."

[IMAGE ID] A redraw of the movie poster for The Young Diana (1922), with the artist’s Magnus Archives OC Nora Lukas replacing the actress Marion Davies. Nora is a pale, dark-haired woman with an aquiline nose and a mole at the left corner of her mouth; she looks directly at the viewer with her right hand clasped to her chest, a slight smile on her face. She is wearing a tricorne hat with strands of pearls extending from the brim, a robe with a checkered labyrinth pattern and fur-trimmed sleeves, and a fur stole with a multi-strand pearl necklace as a clasp.
Nora is shown from the chest up against a black backdrop, with an elaborate frame decorated with swirls surrounding her and framing the words on the poster. There is a banner at the top of the frame that reads, “Created by Cosmopolitan Productions,” with a medallion below it containing the stylized initials “NL.” The framed box below the image of Nora reads: “COSMOPOLITAN PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS / NORA LUKAS / IN “THE YOUNG DIANA” / Story by MARIE CORELLI — Scenario by LUTHER REED — Directed by ALBERT CAPELLANI / Settings by JOSEPH BURR — With Assistance From SYBIL HOLLISTER.” Another, smaller banner below that box reads, “It’s a Paramount Picture.” [END ID]

A self-indulgent redraw of the movie poster that inspired my Avatar of Fear Zine statement! (And a good excuse to take my new stylus for a spin.)

London = Alpha++ City "Cities are categorized as Alpha, Beta or Gamma cities based on their connectivity to the rest of the world. Many factors are taken into account in this analysis, including cultural and political influence, although economic factors are the most important consideration. Alpha cities are the primary nodes in the global economic network.
I took these photographs in 2011. I was visiting my brother and his wife while doing my Tourism Master in The NL. I was impressed with London's culture and Aplha++ status. The city was inspiration for the topic of my Dissertation; "How culture and the arts add quality to a tourism Destination". https://david-perea.pixels.com

Gymnasium Beekvliet in Sint-Michielsgestel, North Brabant
3 Feb 2022
Design: MVRDV
Location: Sint-Michielsgestel, North Brabant, Holland, The Netherlands
Gymnasium Beekvliet, NL
Two alumni of the Gymnasium Beekvliet – MVRDV founding partner Winy Maas and Theobert van Boven of Van Boven Architecten – are leading the transformation of their old secondary school in the Dutch village of Sint-Michielsgestel. The main element of the design by ‘Team Old Beekvliet’ is a colourful, flowing addition that reaches out into the school’s plaza and considerably improves circulation, creating a new focal point at the heart of the building. Exhibiting artwork by visual artist Ian Kirkpatrick, the addition becomes a new focal point for the school’s activities. The completion of the transformation is scheduled for July this year.
The starting point of the design was to renovate the existing school building, extending its lifespan. In addition the brief required a new auditorium, more space for regular school activities, and additional art and culture facilities to provide students with a challenging and stimulating learning environment while offering them more spaces to meet and gather. To achieve this, the design extends an existing roof structure and lowers it to ground level – closing the building’s circulation routes in one flowing move and creating an eye-catching element at the entrance to the school.
The swooping form of the new addition incorporates a tribune forming an auditorium to act as a focal point for school activities, as well as an adaptable stage and a kitchen. The building’s entrance remains in the same location, but the new design reconfigures it, with the main door now nestled underneath the curve. The resulting proposal draws pupils, teachers, and visitors directly into the heart of the building and the life of the school. Painted entirely in blue, the entrance creates a “heaven” in the school.
The exterior walls of this curved addition feature artwork by the renowned London-based Canadian visual artist Ian Kirkpatrick, bearing the memories and experiences of pupils and former pupils, as well as references to the surroundings and the school’s history. The illustrations are positioned using a computer scripting technique that links each one to its geographic location. The resulting artwork bears Kirkpatrick’s characteristic visual style – part iconographic, part Greek amphorae, part computer-generated – lending a fresh and contemporary appearance while providing a record of the school’s 200-year history and anchoring the building in its environment.
“It’s fantastic to work on a building with which I have such history. This school shaped me strongly – it’s a former catholic seminary that transformed into a hip gymnasium and it gave me, coming from a village, a cosmopolitan perspective,” says MVRDV founding partner Winy Maas. “I also think it is great that memories of students, from the past and present, are represented in the mural. Actually, there is a piece of everyone in the region in this building. It really is a reflection of the whole of Sint-Michielsgestel and its surroundings.”
“I went to school at Beekvliet myself, as did one of my children, and my wife is also a teacher there. These connections strongly motivate me to design a unique and special building that does justice to the school’s rich history”, says architect Theobert van Boven. “The auditorium with its curved shape, the printed façade, and the view of the pond that is characteristic of Beekvliet mean that this school will now also be located in a building that matches its stature.”
Gymnasium Beekvliet is not the first time Maas has worked in his home region. Also designed with Van Boven Architecten, Sint-Michielsgestel’s Green Villa, with a façade of green shelves lending it a soft, leafy exterior, is currently gearing towards a planning application. Earlier, Maas designed The Glass Farm in his home, the neighbouring village of Schijndel.
About Ian Kirkpatrick London based Canadian visual artist Ian Kirkpatrick has been exhibiting his work across the UK and internationally, with shows in Montreal, New Orleans, London, Berlin, Rotterdam, New York and Chicago. His sculptural work was commissioned for the 2012 London Olympic Games and the 2014 Tour de France Grand Depart. Among his recent works is Renaissance, a 160–square-metre mural commissioned by Leeds City Council, and he is working on an art mural for the new Amstel Tower in Amsterdam.

rantnrave:// Venus Williams from time to time receives lost in her sister’s shadow. It can be understandable. Serena is the best women’s tennis participant ever. She’s almost certainly the very best tennis participant ever. She’s a person of the most dominant athletes in background. Just about anyone would stand in her shadow. But Venus’ occupation has been remarkable also. Seven Grand Slam titles. Decades of injuries and ailment. She was not a contender for a though, likely 8 decades with no a finals visual appeal in a slam. It has been 9 decades because her very last major championship. That title could be coming quickly because Venus is now the very best tale in sports. She’ll encounter Garbine Muguruza in the Wimbledon last Saturday. She’s 37 — also old to be competitive in most sports and ancient in tennis. Muguruza is 23. This should not be close. But Venus is unique. Who could’ve imagined her winning a slam again two or a few decades back? It would not issue if it truly is with no Serena in the field. This is our time to appreciate Venus. The older sister who came out roaring initial on the WTA has the spotlight back again on her. Let us appreciate this. … Phil Ivey was the largest star of very last decade’s Good Poker Increase. I don’t forget watching the Earth Series of Poker and studying how all the players operated. Each individual a person experienced a distinct character. Ivey failed to disguise at the rear of eyeglasses. He intimidated just by selecting up a set of playing cards. No a person could assess to Ivey’s neat. He was generally the largest name at the table. That looks like a lengthy time back. Poker’s excitement has settled, and Ivey’s aura has taken a hit because of scandal. David Hill tries to figure out why he’s not at this year’s WSOP. A deep dive on a male who is nonetheless poker’s largest star, even if he’s barely seen any longer. … In 2015 this Washington Nationals O.F. nicknamed “Bam Bam” hit forty two house operates and was the NL MVP.

One of the most astonishing and surprising books i came across during my search for art books in the last year is certainly this Adriaan Rees book. Published in english and chinese. Containing cut outs, double pages , velvet cover this is a true artist book. Central theme within the book is the sculpture SCREAMING IN A BUCKET . Adriaan Rees is an exceptional sculptor in many ways.  Here is the text he wrote on himself and published it on his site.
EXPLORING WANDERER
Adriaan Rees (1957, Amsterdam) lives and works in China and Amsterdam. Rees is famous for his large-scale projects and assignments for public space. He makes sculptures and installations in many materials such as ceramics, bronze, glass, textiles, plaster and stone. He also works with photography and video.
When he works with clay, traces of his hands and the use of extreme power can easily be seen at the surface. He is approaching his sculptures almost as a landscape or a human body, sometimes in a sensual, sometimes in a brutal way. He is an artist who is not predictable, someone who always surprises with new ideas and approaches, a cosmopolitan artist.
Exploring wanderer, 2015
From 2000 Rees increasingly travelled to Asia, specifically to Japan, Korea and China. He is intensely affected by these cultures and settled in Jingdezhen, China where he works in his own studio among the thousands of craftsmen locally.
Tradition and innovation, humor and seriousness, monumentality and intimacy, vulnerable and tough, traditional and contemporary, religion and war, fantasy and reality. All this you can find in his sculptures: it is a dialogue between cultural traditions like Europe and Asia.
His work can be found in collections around the world, in museums, private collections and in public space. Rees teaches in The Netherlands, Germany, Finland, USA, Japan and China and frequently gives lectures about his own work, art and art in public space.
He also works as an art advisor and curator. Since 2008 he is the initiator and project leader for the Exchange project 400 years Delft – Jingdezhen. This project brings artists, designers, archaeologists and museums from both cities together. Famous are the Blue Revolution shows in museums in Delft (NL) and Jingdezhen and Donguan (CHN). The shows attracted more than 40.000 visitors in Delft, more than 80.000 in Jingdezhen and more than 200.000 in Donguan.
Rees was the curator of these shows.
The Adriaan Rees book is now available at www.ftn-books.com

London = Alpha++ City "Cities are categorized as Alpha, Beta or Gamma cities based on their connectivity to the rest of the world. Many factors are taken into account in this analysis, including cultural and political influence, although economic factors are the most important consideration. Alpha cities are the primary nodes in the global economic network. I took these photographs in 2011. I was visiting my brother and his wife while doing my Tourism Master in The NL. I was impressed with London's culture and Aplha++ status. The city was inspiration for the topic of my Dissertation; "How culture and the arts add quality to a tourism Destination". https://david-perea.pixels.com #travelphotography #london #tourismmarketing #cosmopolitan #cultures #london #london🇬🇧 #architecture #culture #alpha #city #urban #urbanphotography #photography #building #europe #travelphotography #traveltheworld #master #inspiration #destination #londonlife (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKnWUZVhCLr/?igshid=1k157doauf4g
