Wednesday November 29 / 2023
Simon went for bird watching early in the morning, and found a beautiful spot full of different birds. He took many pictures and took me there after breakfast. If you were wondering! We survived driving back up to the main road. Thank god.
Then we drove to Quetzales National Park, for another meeting. This is the home of the Resplendent Quetzal (a turquoise and green bird with metre long tail feathers), but we didn’t see any because it was raining.
We saw a beautiful adobe style church, which we stopped to photograph, as we were driving through the beautiful Orosi Valley. We witnessed the true life style of Costa Ricans. We drove across a narrow hanging bridge built over the river. We also saw a suspension bridge that the Locals were using as a short cut to cross the river and get to the other side of the village.
In Cartago, the second largest city, we stopped at the beautiful cathedral in the city center. We admired the architecture of it, and spend some time watching people praying. Some were walking towards the altar on their knees, and some were singing prayers. As usual we inconspicuously took lots of pictures.
Then we visited ruins in the middle of the town. It was a very photogenic place, but we had no idea what the ruins were about. We later learned that this was a half finished church that was abandoned after an earthquake and never completed beyond the first story without a roof. Today, it now houses a tropical garden inside.
After shopping for dessert and some vegan food, we drove to the Costa Rica Outward Bound school. We toured their facilities, shared a dinner with the staff, and spent the night at their guest house.

Art Villas Costa Rica
Not far from Costa Rican town Uvita – there is a hidden small resort Art Villas on the jungle hill above the beach Playa Hermosa. Three unique villas and one multifunctional pavilion are scattered over a plot of 2 ha. When the investor approached the architects, he wished to create a place where the visitors merge with the surrounding nature, clearing their mind, experiencing luxury and adventure at the same time. He wanted to create a place that digs deep into everyone’s heart when they taste it. The architects from the Formafatal studio followed the client’s assignment and were also inspired by the atmosphere and colorfulness of Central and South America.
Atelier Villa
Atelier Villa was designed as a private residence for the investor and his family. Nestled against a steep slope, the 26-meter-long prismatic object partially levitates over lush tropical vegetation. Looking outside, there is only the distant ocean or green hills as far as the eye can see; the back wall facing the driveway and the neighboring villas is intentionally windowless, to maintain privacy. The first and foremost priority is not only the idea of “erasing boundaries between interior and exterior” but also highlighting constructional simplicity and pure lines (Pura Vida >> Pura Arquitectura).
The constructional system consists of a steel frame with a span of 4x4m. Discreet wall colors, in combination with the green roof, allow the villa to blend in with its surroundings. The ocean and jungle-oriented façades are fitted with large-size aluminum perforated sections, which a) do not heat up in the sun, and b) are rust-resistant. If pulled up, they double as canopies.
The scale and pattern of the perforations are different in each of the sections, thus creating an exciting play of light and shadow inside. The panels’ special coating is in the color of COR-TEN. The full-back wall is in charred timber cladding treated with Shou Sugi Ban, an old Japanese technique of weather- and age-proofing the wood.
Disposition-wise, the villa possesses the same minimalistic spirit as its shape suggests. The utility and storage rooms, bathrooms, and the kitchen are placed along the back wall. The layout of the rest of the house is very open; the boundaries between the inside and the outside world are gone, and the whole space seems like a roofed terrace. Lightweight sliding partition walls may serve as a tool to create private zones and shake the space up as needed. The patio reveals an infinity pool, partly roofed and therefore protected from the scorching sun.
The whole interior is in warm, earthy tones of natural materials. All of the furnishings, apart from the lounge and dining chairs, are tailor-designed for this villa and custom-made. Commissioned in the area, the major part of the furniture was made with the help of local artisans. Some components were custom-made in the Czech Republic and transported to the site. As for the Czech manufacturers, we decided to opt for the renowned Czech glass-making company Bomma and their Shibari lights that go hand in hand with the overall tropical feel of the interiors.

Art Villa is a vacation home in Costa Rica. It has an above-ground concrete swimming pool designed to reference the tropical landscape in a monolithic form.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A massive concrete block that contains the property's swimming pool protrudes from the house extending over the sloping site.
Tumblr media
In the foyer of the house, there is a shallow circular reflecting pond and situated above the water feature is a round black and white light fixture with ripple-like pattern across its face.
Tumblr media
When designing the interiors, the architects found inspiration not only in the surrounding wild jungle, but also in the work of the Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All of the concrete walls were left in their original state to enhance the other natural elements used in the design, such as plants and water.
Tumblr media
The concrete walls are deliberately left raw, complementing the interior components, selected materials, water, and greenery – altogether creating an unusual environment, both rough and luxurious.
Tumblr media
Isn’t the backsplash unique?
Tumblr media
Love the colorful ombre stools. Wood furnishings in the holiday residence are teak and Brazilian wood, including the irregularly shaped dining table, a bookcase and the rectangular headboards. The wood is also used to form the bedroom doors.
Tumblr media
Unusual storage in the bedroom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Polished concrete covers the floors throughout the main living spaces and mismatched ornamental cement tiles from Nicaragua are used in the bedrooms and bathrooms.
Tumblr media
Love the unique sink.
Tumblr media
A carved stone tub faces the outdoor scenery.
Tumblr media
On the lower level is an exercise room.

Jurassic World is a separate legal entity from INGEN and Masrani Global, as an amusement park and entertainment corporation subsidiary. In late November of 2015, following what becomes known as The Jurassic World Incident, where a hybrid super-predator and several Pterosaurs escaped resulting in several casualties. Consequently, the lawsuits began pouring in. Jurassic World, like many entertainment corporations and large zoos, was heavily insured. Spared no expense. It is insured for standard theme-park risks: ride liability, in case anyone gets injured by a park vehicle; “trip and fall exposures” to cover anyone who gets hurt in a fall for whatever reason; food and concession liability in case anyone gets sick; and workers’ compensation and medical plans for all employees. The dinosaurs are insured in the millions: liability waivers, a primary coverage plan and a secondary coverage plan with excess liability insurance, as a contingency.
In reality, the park was primarily created as a shell corporation for a larger corporate entity (INGEN) to perform questionable genetics experiments, and because it was somewhat of a pet vanity project for Simon Masrani—-    who canonically demonstrated how insignificant the park was in the grand scheme of Masrani Global’s worldwide business ventures, casually threatening to shut down Henry Wu’s work, the park, and Hoskin’s IBRIS research as soon as it was convenient. He was not aware of the illegal genetic experiments INGEN and Henry Wu, in particular, was conducting on Isla Nublar. Vic Hoskins canonically withholds information from Masrani, being quoted saying,“You think that the eighth richest man in the world is only into oil, telecom, and family fun parks? He's so diversified, he doesn't even know what he owns.”
The vast majority of the Masrani Global empire is funded by other ventures, ranging from global communication technology (Mascom Network), medical science and facilities (Medixal Health), genetic research + paramilitary services (International Genetics Technologies & INGEN Security Division), aerospace engineering (Aerospace Dynamix), oil and clean energy (Masrani Energy), computer chip technology (Tatsuo Technology), and architecture + commercial construction work (Timack Construction & Axis Boulder Engineering). Masrani was not concerned with the financial status of Jurassic World, so much as the spectacle.
In the end, against the deluge of lawsuits and legalities, Jurassic World files for bankruptcy. While they are legally covered and insured, the potential of receiving lawsuits from the victims’ families and anti-cloning advocacy groups who were against the park’s existence in the first place would be… inconvenient. No attorney in their right mind would allow lawsuits regarding the incident to go to trial; the prospect of a crushing judgment with punitive damages would force settlements as quickly as possible. INGEN would prefer to downplay the tragedy, and put an end to it as quietly as possible, avoiding a spectacle and any potential investigation into the moral ambiguity of their genetic research.
Spearheaded by Claire Dearing, Owen took part in whistleblowing INGEN’s illegal experiments, providing documented evidence and pre-recording his testimonies, or testifying via webcam. He was also heavily interrogated by the Costa Rican Government and United Nations authorities in regards to Vic Hoskins’ involvement in the gross negligence conducted by INGEN ’s Security Division during the incident, and the mysterious Indominus Rex. It was the the last time Owen would have anything to do with INGEN and Masrani Global.
After the trials and lawsuits finally receded (with very little justice to show for it, as the megacorporation essentially solved its problems by throwing money at it), Owen returned to the Americas and spent the majority of the next two years on the open road, far removed from society, driving his airstream across continents and staying off the grid between 2016 and 2018. Eventually, he decides to settle down on property in Arizona and build a cabin.
