Kai'Sa (pre-Void, 5 y/o) asks her mother about her father's travels [minific]

800 words - Runeterra-verse - Unnamed Mother's PoV

She’s just about to stand up, assured that her daughter has at last fallen asleep, when an eye cracks open and a small voice breaks the silence.

“Mama?” Kaisa says, with a tone of sadness.

She sinks back down to rest her weight on the stool beside Kaisa’s bed. “Yes baby?”

“When is Dad coming back?”

She sighs, a pain forming in her chest at both the look on her daughter’s face, and the question that she never tries to dwell on for too long. “I don’t know,” she admits, brushing her fingers across Kaisa’s forehead. “If I’ve counted the days right, he should be on his way back home now, but I don’t know.”

Kaisa curls in on herself a little more under the covers. “Okay.”

“I miss him too.”

Kaisa’s eyes drift away into thought rather than sleep. “Can you show me on the map again?”

She smiles. From just beneath the bed she pulls out a sizable leather-bound book: a catalog of animals found across the Shuriman continent. Kaisa has poured over the contents dozens of times, but now her mother opens up the front cover spread, a drawn map of the continent. 

She has Kaisa sit up and hold the spread out, then leans over and points to a spot on the southern part of the map, just to the east of the word Zirima. “We’re here,” she says, and drags her finger upward towards the northern coast. “And Dad went all the way up here.” She taps the mark labeled Nashramae.

Kaisa follows intently. “Is he helping more people?”

“Yes, he’s helping them across The Great Sai. He’s taking them here—” She points to a spot along the main river halfway down the continent, labeled Vekaura. “—and then he’ll guide them back to the port city again so that they can go home.” Her finger traces the path of her words.

Kaisa’s far smaller finger joins her mother’s at Nashramae, and then slides all the way down, back to the southern canyons. “And Dad will come home as well.”

“Yes baby, he will.” She pets back some of the hair that has fallen across Kaisa’s forehead again. “I made him promise to stay for at least three months afterwards. Someone has a sixth birthday coming up, doesn’t she?” Kaisa giggles. “I bet he’ll have a nice present for you.”

Kaisa looks up at her, brown eyes blown wide and curious. “Where is the other people’s home?”

She points back at the port city, and moves her finger upward into the ocean and off the page to the northwest. “This time, these people are going up here, off to the kingdom of Demacia. Dad has been there before, remember?” Kaisa nods. “Do you want me to show you on the big map again?” Kaisa nods more vigorously.

She kisses Kaisa’s forehead before standing up, and then walks through the curtain that sections off Kaisa’s bedspace in their tent. She finds a box of Kassadin’s things, filled with extra navigation equipment that was unneeded for this particular trip. There is no shortage of maps, some outdated and others quite tattered, but she pulls out the particularly large scroll with the illustrations that she knows Kaisa likes.

When she returns, Kaisa is fully sitting up in her bed with an excited grin, showing no sign of the weariness that had been present just a few minutes ago. She can’t help but smile fondly in return, unable to be even remotely upset with her daughter’s bubbling interest in the world around her. That energy mirrors Kassadin almost as much as her smile does.

She sits next to Kaisa and rolls out the map across their laps, the edges draping down the sides of the bed. 

“Wow,” Kaisa says under her breath, like she hasn’t seen it before.

Her mother chuckles, then points to the western coast of the larger continent above Shurima. “That’s where Demacia is,” she says, circling the sword emblem with a finger. She then points out all the other regions of the world, describing their climates — the Freljord is icy and cold, not like here — or landmarks she’s heard of — Noxus has a huge citadel in their capital city, so tall you can’t see the top of it. 

“Now over there,” she says, pointing to a cluster of islands in the northeastern most corner of the map. “That’s Ionia, filled with magic and all kinds of plants and animals, lots of vastaya too. Your father says it’s a very beautiful place, especially the forests.”

“Have you ever seen it, Mama?”

She shakes her head. “I’ve never gone beyond the desert.”

“I wanna go,” Kaisa says. “Can we go, Mama? With Dad?”

“Perhaps when you’re older, binsikhi.” She wraps an arm around Kaisa and pulls her in closer to her side. “Right now, you’re safe here.”
