Hi there! And don't worry, it doesn't sound weird at all!

Since the game is made using renpy, you can check the code the same way you do it with other renpy games. There are a number of guides that you can find about it online, but here's a quick summary from me:

In renpy games, the scripts and other game assets are usually stored in archive.rpa or any rpa files, so you need to extract them from there if you want to see them. I use unren.bat to do this because it's simpler, but there are other ways and tools out there that achieve the same result.

Once you extract the data, you will find a lot of rpyc files. These are compiled scripts that are used to run the game. There are sites where you can view these kind of files online, but they will just look like gibberish if you try to open them normally. If you want to see the script as it is, you need to decompile the rypc to rpy (you can do this with unren too).

And that's it. Our life is moment-based, so the game script is separated in different rpy files and named after the moments they're about (eg. prologue, fireflies, etc.). You can open the rpy files with any text editing softwares like word or notepad, but I use vs code so it's easier to differentiate the actual game script from the codes.

With that being said, please be mindful with the act of decompiling games!

As far as I'm aware, gb patch is cool with players cracking the game open and making mods of it, but this might not be the case with other games. Always make sure you have the creator's permission before decompiling a game, read the license or ask the creator directly if you're not 100% sure!

Jokes aside, so I like, remember when I said that used to use Ren'py at one point? Yeah, I just opened my first (and still incomplete) VN again after like 2019~ an HOLY SHIT that opened up a vault of forgotten memories O_O

Context: the game was supposed to be like a Y/N parody shitpost game featuring:

-Y/N, no you can't insert your actual name to replace it, she was literally named Your Name

-Anthony 'Nonny' Minus, not tumblr anon anonymous but like, hacker man anonymous based off of bad Wattpad fanfictions, yes he's the love interest

-a bunch of other parody characters I made with a friend back then, that includes a DiaLovers Ayato Rip-off, a Koreaboo parody, said koreaboos extremely Swedish boyfriend, 3 characters from a story we had to make during german period (I can go into mild detail if you want) and all of them also followed the unbelievably ridiculous naming scheme but I didn't get far enough to make actual sprites for them, so the only design reference I've got of them rn is in IRL traditional

Also while reading through the game I remembered how fucked up i made Y/Ns backstory (you can ask about it, because this ask is already approaching biblical lengths again so I'm not gonna exposition dump even more :,))

Hellooo what’s your advice for people who want to make their own dating sim/otome game?

Sit down, open a word doc, and start writing. The only thing preventing you from making one is you (not a joke LOL).

As for the coding side, it just takes practice. There's plenty of tutorials out there if you want a crack at renpy, and its not so hard once you get the hang of it.

If, however, you are still struggling with motivation or would like to work on a team, i recommend you join the upcoming otome jam in may/june. BP came from last year's, and everyone who participates is welcoming and encouraging!

I was just wondering, since renpy uses scripting for moments and stuff, so it should be possible to mod the game, are you guys OK with game mods? Thanks!

People can mod our games if they crack them open themselves and put the game up on their own pages. I think fan mods are cool. But we won't host mods or make any game moddable by default. That's just not really a thing for most VNs. They have their own story and other people adding/changing that isn't what the games are for. Good luck if you try to make a mod!

As someone who once used ren'py (kinda stopped cuz school is kicking my ahh)

The tutorial that comes with the software is honestly so helpful, not because I actually read through it, but because I could just crack it open and steal the parts that I needed, but tbh coding is just 90% stealing codes from other sources/people anyway lmao

Smth that rlly helped me is putting little # comments above each function so that you can tell what exactly they do. Also the order of the codes is super important and things may go WHACK if you ever decide to rearrange them, so watch out for that! Maybe you already knew all of that but I wanted to be sure that you don't have to suffer through too much coding hell ^^"

And yeah Im planning on just folding The first routes code bc I'm not even halfway yet and I've already used like almost 1000 lines of code 😭

Keep sending in ren'py stuff if you want to! It really is a big help and really fun to talk about with others since I don't see a lot of renpy users that help too much out there.
