On March *5th 1759 the lexicographer and church minister John Jamieson was born in Glasgow. *Some sources say March 3rd
I know most of you will not have heard of Jamieson, but his publication, Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Language, is credited with keeping the language alive., so much so much so he has even been the subject of a book about his work. Jamieson was a bit of a polymath though and learned in many fields, read on........
If you have read some of my posts I like to dig out documents etc from days gone by, a most of these are written in Scots, you only have to read the poetry of Robert Fergusson or Rabbie Burns, the vast majority which is written in the language, or up to modern times if you have read any of Irvine Welsh’s books, you will know that as a language it is distinctly different to what is termed as “proper English”
Anyway a bit about the man, Jamieson grew up in Glasgow as the only surviving son in a family with an invalid father, he entered Glasgow University aged at the staggeringly young age of just nine! From 1773 he studied the necessary course in theology with the Associate Presbytery of Glasgow, and in 1780 he was licensed to preach.
Jamieson was appointed to serve as minister to the newly established Secession congregation in Forfar, and stayed there for the next eighteen years, during which time he married Charlotte Watson, the daughter of a local widower, and started a family. Their marriage lasted fifty-five years and they had seventeen children, ten of whom reached adulthood, although only three outlived their father. He next became minister of the Edinburgh Nicolson Street congregation in 1797 where he guided the reconciliation of the Burgher and Anti-Burgher sects to a union in 1820.
In 1788 Jamieson’s writing was recognised by Princeton College, New Jersey where he received the degree of Doctor of Divinity. His other honours included membership of the Society of Scottish Antiquaries, of the Royal Physical Society of Edinburgh, of the American Antiquarian Society of Boston, United States, and of the Copenhagen Society of Northern Literature. He was also a royal associate of the first class of the Royal Society of Literature instituted by George IV.
Jamieson’s chief work, the Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Language was published in two volumes in 1808 and was the standard reference work on the subject until the publication of the Scottish National Dictionary in 1931. He published several other works, but it is the dictionary he is best known for.
He had a particular passion for numismatics, and it was their mutual interest in coins which led to the first meeting between Jamieson and Walter Scott, in 1795, when Scott was only twenty-three and not yet a published author. Jamieson was also a keen angler, as the many entries relating to fishing terms in the Dictionary attest; and published occasional works of poetry, including a poem against the slave trade which was praised by abolitionists in its day. Entries provided by Scott include besom, which he described as a “low woman or prostitute,” and screed, defined as a “long revel” or “hearty drinking bout”. I wonder how many Scottish females have been called “a wee besom” by their mothers with neither really knowing it’s true meaning!
Jamieson’s association with Walter Scott was a two way thing, he wrote a Scots poem *‘The Water Kelpie’ for the second edition of Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border. 8

It was through his antiquarian research that Jamieson developed his practice of tracing words (particularly place-names) to their earliest form and occurrence: a method which was to be the foundation of the historical approach he would use in the Dictionary.
Jamieson wrote on other themes: rhetoric, cremation, and the royal palaces of Scotland, besides publishing occasional sermons. In 1820 he issued edited versions of Barbour’s The Brus and Blind Harry’s Wallace.
Revered by authors including Hugh MacDiarmid, who used it to shape his poetic output, Jamieson’s dictionary has long been regarded as a crucial groundwork which kept alive the Scots language at a time when it was in danger of falling into obscurity.
He retired due to ill health in 1830 and died at home, 4 George Square, Edinburgh on 12th July 1838, he has a fine gravestone in St Cuthbert’s graveyard in Edinburgh, as seen in the fourth pic.

Breakdown
On their fifth wedding anniversary, writing teacher Nick Dunne returns home to find his wife Amy missing. Amy's fame as the inspiration for her parents' successful Amazing Amy children's books ensures widespread press coverage. The media finds Nick's apathy towards the disappearance suspicious.
Flashbacks in the form of diary entries show a complex reality and a deteriorating marriage. Amazing Amy was an idealized completion of the real Amy's failures. Both Nick and Amy lost their jobs in the recession and moved from New York to Nick's hometown of North Carthage, Missouri, to support his dying mother. Nick grew distant from Amy and began an affair with Andie, one of his students, while Amy became resentful towards Nick for uprooting her.
Detective Rhonda Boney and the forensic team find poorly concealed evidence of a struggle and profuse blood loss in the house. Boney learns of financial issues, spousal disputes, and Amy's recent attempt to buy a gun. Medical reports indicate Amy was pregnant, which Nick denies knowledge of.
On every wedding anniversary, Amy had set up elaborate treasure hunts for Nick. This year's clues appear in places where Nick had sex with Andie, thus revealing Amy's knowledge of his affair. Nick discovers thousands of dollars of items purchased with his credit card hidden in his twin sister Margo's woodshed. Amy's clues lead authorities to a half-burned diary documenting her growing dread of Nick and ending with a genuine fear that he will kill her.
It's revealed that Amy is alive and hiding in a campground in the Ozarks. After discovering Nick's affair, Amy conceived an elaborate plan to frame him for her murder. She had him ramp up her life insurance and secretly used his credit card to buy the woodshed items. She befriended a pregnant neighbor, told her stories about Nick's temper, and stole her urine to fake a pregnancy, thus eliciting media sympathy after her disappearance. She wrote a diary with increasingly fabricated entries and placed incriminating evidence in the treasure-hunt spots for the police to find. On the morning of her disappearance, Amy drained and splattered her own blood across the kitchen and then cleaned it haphazardly. Her original plan was to drown herself after Nick's arrest and have her body found to ensure his death sentence.
Nick deduces Amy's scheme, convinces Margo of his innocence, and hires lawyer Tanner Bolt, known for representing uxoricide suspects. Nick meets two of Amy's ex-boyfriends: Tommy O'Hara claims he was framed for rape by her after he ended their relationship; wealthy Desi Collings, against whom Amy had filed a restraining order for stalking, turns Nick away.
When Amy's campground neighbors rob her, she calls Desi for help, convincing him that she fled Nick's abuse. Desi agrees to hide her in his lakehouse. Bolt convinces Nick to reveal his affair on a popular talk show, thus seizing the narrative initiative from the media. Andie reveals the affair at a press conference shortly before the show, but Nick insists on conducting the interview. He affirms his innocence and feigns regret for his shortcomings as a spouse, knowing that Amy will be watching.
The interview is a success, garnering widespread sympathy for Nick. However, Boney has already gathered enough murder evidence and arrests Nick and Margo. Bolt bails them out, and they brace for the impending trial. After watching Nick's interview, Amy rekindles her attraction to him and spends weeks crafting her escape story. Using lakehouse surveillance cameras and self-inflicted wrist and vaginal injuries, she makes it appear that Desi kidnapped and raped her. She then seduces Desi, slits his throat during sex, and returns home covered in his blood, thus clearing Nick of suspicion.
Medical examiners lend credence to Amy's story. During questioning, Boney probes her inconsistencies, but Amy spins the focus onto Boney by calling her incompetent. The FBI believes Amy and closes the case, but Boney gleans Amy's guilt. Upon returning home, Amy tells Nick the truth, admitting to Desi's murder. She states that Nick pleading for her return on TV is the one she wants and the one who inspired her forgiveness. Nick shares this with Boney, Bolt, and Margo. Despite unanimously agreeing that Amy is guilty, everyone acknowledges a lack of evidence. Bolt wishes Nick well and returns to New York.
A televised interview takes place in their home seven weeks later. Anticipating Nick's intention to leave her and publicly expose her story, Amy reveals her pregnancy minutes before the interview, having inseminated herself with Nick's sperm from a fertility clinic. Nick reacts violently at first but feels responsible for the child and ultimately decides to stay with Amy, despite Margo's despair. The “happy” couple announces on television that they are expecting a child.

2025 PREP LIST
Here's a list of things you should do to protect and help yourself going into 2025. I've organized them hard/medium/easy based on their time consumption and difficulty of execution.
GET A PASSPORT & OBTAIN DOCUMENTS (HARD)
• Get or update your passport so it will last through these next 4 years. Your passport is a very strong piece of identity keeping material. Everything in this section is especially important for people who have legally changed their name in any form. 2025 will likely contain some legislation targeting people whose name doesn't match on all their legal documents. Also if you need to flee the country this will be super important to have. Certain passport renewals are eligible to do online.
• Get copies or originals of all your legal documents. That means you should have your birth certificate, your social security card, and any diplomas or degrees. Keep those yourself at home in a safe location or in a safety deposit that you have legal access to (your name should be on the access slip and you should have a key)
CONTROL YOUR MONEY (MEDIUM)
• Move your money to a local bank or preferably a credit union. Big banks collect data on you and use your money to back their own evil causes. The people going into power don't care about people, they care about money, so that is our most powerful mouthpiece. Moving it sends a message to them and also denies them the data they get from monitoring our purchases and it protects it better. This is one of the most proactive things you can do right now.
How to move your money: It is probably best practice to call your bank and let them know that you are going to be closing your account there and transferring your money. This is so they can make sure they have enough cash on hand to give you. Then you'll just take that and head over to your new local bank or credit union and they'll get your accounts set up. It can be accomplished in a morning or afternoon. The hardest part will be just finding the time, and then moving all online accounts to a new billing situation. I did this a few years ago and it was actually super easy.
• Shop Local ! Shop Small ! everyone has been preaching this for years, but you need to keep doing it or start now. Shopping local has always been more expensive, but with the tariffs coming, its not going to matter any more. Don't shop Walmart, Target, big conglomerates. Especially for groceries. Food safety is going to continue to be relaxed under the incoming administration. Eating local and knowing where your food came from will be the best way to protect yourself.
• Get a budget. You can use a budget app like YNAB or just track it yourself on paper or on a spreadsheet. Just being aware of how much you spend and where will help you save money in the expensive time we're going into, and realize if your money is going to someone you don't want it to go to.
CONTROL YOUR BODY (HARD)
• Future of birth control and abortion is uncertain. Stock up now on Plan B and Plan C abortion pills. Do this even if you are not a person affected, because you never know who in your life will be. (be aware of the effectiveness of these pills. Plan B lowers in effectiveness on people 165 pounds and over. Other Plan B options have similar issues.)
• Consider your options for long term birth control. Talk with your doctor about how much birth control pill you can stock up on, or consider an IUD. Do your research about your options, they all affect different people differently. Most of these will last through the next 4 years. If yours is set to expire before or during that time period, ask if your doctor will go ahead and replace yours early.
• here is the list of doctors in the states who will perform sterilizations or permanent birth control
• update your vaccinations now. the future of vaccines are also uncertain. the updated covid and flu shots are available, ask your doctor or check your records to see what vaccines you need a re-up on. you should have an updated tetanus/tdap shot every 10 years. you can get these at your doctor or at CVS, Walgreens, etc.
• stop use of all period tracker apps or tracking your period on any digital platform based on the internet, cell data, or the cloud. track on paper.
• if you take prescriptions talk with your doctor about how much of it you can have on hand at once. stock as much as you can.
CONTROL YOUR RELATIONSHIPS (MEDIUM)
• Women are divorcing and breaking up with people who voted for Trump. If there are people in your life who don't align with your values its time to consider cutting them out, especially if they are a romantic partner.
• The 4B movement is taking off in America as a movement to show right wing men that they can't have their cake and eat it too. The 4 B's stand for no dating men, no sex with men, no marriage to men, and no childbirth. If that interests you now is the time to start.
• Delete your dating apps and your profiles on your dating apps. These guys will be scrolling past the same two women every day with no other offerings. Your body, your choice, no exceptions.
DITCH AMAZON (EASY)
• Cancel your amazon prime and delete or forswear use of your amazon account. Amazon has always been evil but now it is evil backed by evil. It collects your spending data and it is the biggest proponent of convenience culture. Getting real rights for workers means all of us recognizing that convenience has a cost, and it is far more than amazon is charging. A good life for everyone means you get your things slower, and we all need to learn to be ok with that.
• Unsubscribe from all shopping mailing lists. When you get the shopping newsletter in your inbox from wherever, hit the unsubscribe button. We need to be telling corporations and companies we don't care about their crap, and junk emails are bad for us and the planet. This is an easy way to cut temptation and stick it to them.
• Where you buy from matters. Buying small business or local means a safer product and it means your money does not go directly to the pockets of evil. The best easy thing you ca do during the next 4 years is CARE WHO YOUR MONEY GOES TO.
PROTECT YOURSELF ONLINE (EASY)
• SWITCH TO FIREFOX. It's said all the time on this website, but do it this time, actually do it. I finally did and it was super fast and easy and took less than a minute and it migrated all my bookmarks and passwords from chrome. Though the safest way to be online is with Linux, if you have that capability.
• add necessary extensions to your new firefox. these will be recommended when you install and you should 1000% add them: Ublock origin, privacy badger, facebook container, and clear urls. avoid adding savings extensions - honey is the biggest culprit. they make money off of your spending data. now is the time we have to fight harder than ever for our digital privacy and security, and that starts by denying them access.
MAKE YOUR PURCHASES NOW (MEDIUM)
• consider your life and if there is anything in it that is necessary and might break or need replaced in the next 4 years. I mean big purchases like appliances, car maintenance, house maintenance. Everything is going to get more expensive, and if you can get these big purchases now at a cheaper cost, you should do it.
• stock up on any imported goods that you have space for and want to prioritize having. Olive oil, wine, spices, to name a few.
HAVE AN EMERGENCY PLAN (MEDIUM)
• maybe when you move to your new credit union you move some of your money to a designated emergency savings fund. Everyone should have an emergency fund or money to fall back on in case anything happens, but that is going to be even more important to build and pad that fund going into an administration that is going to jack the prices of everything. Also because if you do need to flee you'll need money to fund your escape.
• make a plan for if you do decide to flee the country or it becomes necessary. consider where you will go and how you will get there. its important to think about how long you will stay there and how long you can stay legally or if you can immigrate, and to consider what the political climate / human rights situation in your hopeful new country is like.
EDUCATE YOURSELF (EASY)
• we all have to be part of the change, and we all have to fight for it. we can start by educating ourselves. My reading list includes Mutual Aid, Except for Palestine, Let this Radicalize You, Becoming Abolitionists, The Jungle, Assata, The Purpose of Power, Social Movements, We Do this till We Free Us, Strangers in their Own Land, and The New Jim Crow.
Knuckle down. We're not going into 2025 afraid, we're going in prepared.

I'd like to illustrate a problem here for a second about documentation and having ID expire every 5 years or whenever you move, while disabled in Canada, or at least Ontario.
To renew ID you need 3 pieces of documentation, one for proof of citizenship/status/immigration etc, like your birth certificate or registration etc, one for proof of residence like personally addressed mail, a bank statement or bill...
And the third, which must be separate, which is "proof of identity" for which the following is accepted:
credit card
valid Ontario driver’s licence or temporary driver’s licence
valid Ontario Photo Card
Canadian Immigration Identification Card
Certificate of Canadian Citizenship (plastic card)
Certificate of Indian Status (paper or plastic card)
Confirmation of Permanent Residence (Imm 5292)
only if signature is shown
current employee ID card
current professional association licence
Old Age Security Card
Ontario motor vehicle permit (plate portion only)
passport (Canadian or foreign)
Permanent Resident Card
only if signature is shown
Record of Landing (Imm 1000)
student ID card
union card
I have crossed out the ones I can't get as a disabled single adult with no dependents who was born here, is not elderly, cannot drive etc... Your average single young disabled adult born and raised here.
The certificate of citizenship I could [have, previously] technically get, but as a natural born citizen other sources will insist my birth certificate should be enough and I should never need this... And they STOPPED ISSUING THE PLASTIC CARDS LISTED HERE AS VALID ID!
I can't get a credit card approved because of my income.
The passport I only ever got because when I was younger I could travel, and it wouldn't get money taken off my pension etc... But most people in my position won't have or maintain this, and indeed mine is still with someone I took a trip with in my 20's and is lost to me, and I have had no real reason to renew it or report it lost. I can't renew it without getting the info off the old one and I can't apply for a new one without already having valid id AND BEING ABLE TO FIND 2 PEOPLE TO VOUCH FOR ME... Which I don't have, frankly, and I am going to go out on a limb and say that when you are more or less house bound and an inconvenient disabled who people are prone to abusing it is quite common enough to not be able to find 2 people to vouch for you. You also need a guarantor and someone to take photos! And sign them! And why would you? Why would you maintain a passport when you can't even travel??? It isn't accessible to me anyway.
So most people in my position, which is a lot, will ONLY have the photo ID card as "proof of id" which you NEED to 1. renew your health card, 2. renew the photo card itself.
My problem with this is that technically you need a photo ID card that's still valid, to make your photo id card valid again. They technically are not allowed to use your health card as this kind of ID.
I am disabled and therefor often things are LONG expired by the time I have the ability to get them renewed, so in addition to all this, my health card and photo id expire at the same time every time now.
They wanted to have a photo id alternative to the driver's license to help with issues like this to begin with, but they haven't made it much better.
The next issue is it's the only government Id that's of any use to me and that I am encouraged to get but it costs 35$ because it's treated as optional, instead of it being free like your health card is... So actually your health card does cost 35$ to maintain... Because you need your photo id card to stay valid... So actually our "free" healthcare has an out of pocket cost of 7$ per year minimum. That's not a lot, but that's not free if that 35 every 5 years stops you from being able to have health coverage.
I want a form of government ID, that counts as proof of identity, for the purpose of renewing my very important health insurance card, that doesn't bloody expire all the fucking time.
Because you're actually supposed to renew your health card every time your address changes... And when you are poor and disabled you tend to either be stuck with your parents, or stuck moving constantly to escape abuse.
And just... Do you know, how many times, for how many months I have been effectively between health coverage, in a country with free healthcare, and thus unable to seek medical attention, because my id has expired and I did not have the physical energy to go get it renewed? And that shouldn't happen!
Technically, by their own laws/policy they should have turned me away to renew my id, which would have left me 100% fucked with no existing valid ID to use to get other ID. That shouldn't be able to happen to you every 5 years or every time you move, especially when you are disabled.
And they shouldn't charge 35$ for it, considering you need it to get your health card renewed at all, technically speaking. It should be FREE! Especially if you are disabled!
If I still physically had my last passport I might be able to keep renewing it without this bullshit headache, but I can't without my old one.
They should have never switched to health cards that expire, I don't care if they wanted photo id, it was fine before, this is bullshit. This makes healthcare potentially inaccessible to the disabled because they have put it behind these stupid hoops you have to jump every 5 years and when you move.
And do you know how many disabled people have memory and mobility issues???
This is stupid.
And the kick in the teeth is that once they have my photo taken they will randomly chose to use older photos they have on file, because clearly my appearance hasn't changed enough through my adult life for them to even care how old the photo is! Why does the photo id have to expire if the photo can be over 10 years old according to their own records!? Their whole excuse for them expiring is that your appearance and address need to be up to date!
For those of you who don't know because it might have been before your time... health cards used to be white with a red stripe and no photo or address and they never expired. You only needed a new one if it was lost or stolen and that was fine. You could memorize the number on it and not even carry your card like you do with your SIN.
And then they switched us to the new photo ones to make sure everyone would have photo ID
And then they decided health cards couldn't be photo id because they didn't want to manage who got health care and who could buy alcohol with the same system for whatever reasons, so they came out with the "photo id" that you are expected to have as an alternative to a drivers license if you don't drive...
But they wanted money, so they charge 35$ every five years and make you pray to their monument of bureaucracy to get it.
Anyway fuck this my ability to make medical appointments shouldn't expire in a country with free healthcare. If they had a problem with people using each other's health cards before and messing up records, they should have made it easier to get your own health card, and not harder. And yes they should have made it so anyone even an illegal immigrant or someone who lost all their ID in a fire could walk into a clinic and still get basic care.
Not this bullshit song and dance.
So gee, if I fail to renew online just before these card expire you will hear me rant about this bullshit again in 5 years.
They could at LEAST give you a disability id card that never expires that you can use for shit like accessing the food bank or for proof of identity etc... Maybe even then it would be easy to have discount programs for anyone on a disability pension, maybe any groceries that are deemed basic necessities enough could be partially or fully subsidized without extra applications and headaches?
But no it's like they want to make healthcare inaccessible for the people who need it the most.

The level of difficulty that getting benefits paperwork submitted to the government is makes me want to rip my hair out. First the paperwork doesn't get to me in time for me to be sure it'll get back by the deadline through the mail, then fax number they gave me isn't correct, then my credit union will no longer fax these forms for me at all, then the online benefits portal is having server issues so I can't upload documents that way. I'd go physically slam my paperwork down on their counter except I just dropped my car off with a mechanic since I didn't think that would be fucking necessary. And this form is literally just to tell them nothing has changed since the last time we spoke so please keep giving me food money.

On 9th November 1769 The Fenwick Weaver’s Co-operative Society, the worlds first co-operative association, was founded.
In the Anglocentric education system that most of us older Scots grew up with we were told that the Yorkshire town of Rochdale were first to have a Co-op, this was in 1844. The truth of the matter is that The Fenwick Weavers' Society is considered to be the earliest known co-operative in the world for which full records exist about 75 years before the English claim.
The cooperative movement was born over 250 years ago in a barely-furnished cottage in the East Ayrshire village, when local weavers manhandled a sack of oatmeal into John Walker's whitewashed front room and began selling the contents at a discount.
In Yorkshire a sign on the railway bridge above the A664 leading into the town from the M62 states: "Rochdale: birthplace of cooperation", while the council's website describes the town as the "home of the worldwide cooperative movement", so I made a wee meme gif with the Still Game Neds to put hings right.
The Fenwick societies foundations started 8 years before when on 14th March 1761, 16 weavers met together in Fenwick Church to sign the foundation charter of the Fenwick Weavers’ Society. By signing the document, they agreed to its terms and conditions. These included ‘being honest and faithful to one another’ and to their employers, making 'good sufficient’ work, and setting prices that were 'neither higher nor lower … than are accustomed in the towns and parishes of the neighbourhood’.
The society members promised to pay an admission fee of two shillings and sixpence which was to be used for the good of the Society. Regular contributions to the poor fund were made from these shared investments. As well as offering mutual support to its members, the society aimed to bring benefit to the wider community.
On 9th November 1769, the society agreed that its funds should be used to buy, 'victuals’, or food, in bulk to be sold to members and non-members at a good price. In addition, members enjoyed the privilege of up to four weeks’ credit.
The society funds were also used to buy books and, in 1808, the members established a library for the local community. In the society records, there is also evidence of a form of 'credit union’, or community-based bank organised on co-operative principles. People could borrow money from the communal funds at a fixed rate of interest.
Sadly handloom weaving could not resist the advance of the factories and, in 1873, with only three members left, they wound up the Society. However, their memory lives on, both in the descendants of the Weavers now all over the globe, and also in our great world-wide Co-operative Movement with almost a billion co-operators affiliated to the International Co-operative Alliance.
The Society was reconvened in March 2008 and has been reconstituted as a co-operative, in legal form as an industrial and provident society, in order to record, collect and commemorate the heritage of the Fenwick Weavers.

«Anthology of Ukrainian Kitchen 2022-2024 and 2025» is a documentation of life stories, experiences and acts of solidarity, selected on the basis of materials from the Ukraine War Archive and personal video and audio recordings by the artist Volodymyr Kuznetsov. The audio play is an artistic form that the author uses to tell the story of the phenomenon of Ukrainian volunteerism. This phenomenon takes on the shape of a great story, a legend, transforming later into myths and fairy tales. The audio play was broadcast in Ukrainian with SDH subtitles (adapted for the deaf). The audio play was created in 2024 as part of the interdisciplinary art program DOCU/SYnthesis, 21 Docudays UA.
