The Saturday Ramble: Coffee Outside, Leif Erickson, Blue Moon (Sept 24)
On Leif Erikson, MP 3 1/4, 24 Sept 2022. Minolta XD5/Minolta MD 50mm f/1.7 lens/Fuji C200 It had been a busy September, with a big conference occupying one full week, and then travel to Boise another. Despite sneaking in some rides while in Boise, my September cycling has been pretty scant. Returning to Portland, I knew I needed a bike ride. I had to go to Blue Moon to pick up supplies. Yes, I…

Metaphors are not how we define territories; they are how we travel across thresholds between categories. They are bridges across difference. Through them, we connect the abstract and the concrete, the small and the large, the live and the inanimate, the human and the nonhuman. Sometimes the metaphors are built so deeply into language we hardly notice the bodily anatomy that gives mountains foothills, rivers headwaters and mouths (curiously, at opposite ends), needles eyes, vases necks, chairs arms, and tables legs. We think through our bodies, and that includes seeing bodies elsewhere, making bodies the terms of understanding how animate and inanimate, tiny and huge objects and systems work. Both needles and storms have eyes. Metaphor is the process of relating things that are alike in some fashion, to some degree, and the literal-minded object on the grounds of those differences while the metaphorically minded understand the limits of similarity.

JAMEL CRESTON as THE CUTIE THAT’S DATING UR CRUSH
(btw ur crush, for the purposes of this post, is @kashisun‘s oc Isaac - uh oh; you developed a crush for real, huh? 😌💐✨) facts:
he’s a yoga + movement/somatic therapy instructor
is proficient in asl and performs poetry in sign
will (attempt to) turn your casual hike plans into a full-on backpacking adventure
is working off court-ordered community service hours for several parking violations by doing city cleanup, but volunteering at a small animal shelter is a passion he indulges freely

Found the tagged post! I was tagged by @ungratefulbeyotchhotline
Do you make your bed? So what I like to do is make my bed and then put an extra sheet and comforter on top, and then I just sleep on it that way. So it's sort of made. But over time as it comes unmade, I don't fix it so not really lol.
What's your favorite number? I don't really have one tbh.
What is your job? I'm a shift lead at Burger King.
If you could go back to school, would you? I'd like to, but I fear I may be too dumb now lol. But realistically it's not financially feasible.
Can you parallel park? Hell naw.
A job you had that would surprise people? I worked for a bank for around a year, I guess? Mostly I've just had retail jobs.
Do you think aliens are real? I don't actively believe or disbelieve most things. I'm open to the potential.
Can you drive a manual car? Hell naw. What's with all these driving questions? I fucking suck at driving lol.
What's your guilty pleasure? I don't believe in them. If you like something you like it, fuck it.
Tattoos? I have none but I have a few planned i'd like to get.
Favorite color? Mauve.
Favorite type of music? I mean, the last few years I've definitely listened to rap more than anything. But I also like folk/black metal/screamo/noise/drone. I'm more into artists that create a cool vibe or atmosphere than are necessarily technically good at their craft.
Do you like puzzles? I'm a dummy I can't do puzzles.
Any phobias? Open spaces. If I'm in a field or something and look at the sky, sometimes i get so overwhelmed I vomit lol.
Favorite childhood sport? I never played any sports when I was a kid. I did wrestling for like a week.
Do you talk to yourself? Not out loud, because I don't want to bother other people. But in my head I'm constantly holding full conversations with myself.
What movies do you adore? Oh man. Crestone, Begotten, Louisiana - The Other Side, The Florida Project, Cycling Chronicles: Landscapes That the Boy Saw, Grandma's Boy.
Coffee or Tea? I like them both. Probably tea more, I'm especially fond of white tea. (Funny story, that's how I came up with the rap clique name that never really materialized when I was planning on starting to rap, Delicate Boyz. My ex's family was making fun of me (jokingly) about how white tea is delicate. I told my friend and she said "What's wrong with being a delicate boy?" We're not friends anymore. :() But I drink more coffee. I actually got super into coffee for a bit. It's a fun hobby, but I really wanted an espresso machine and they're mad fucking expensive.
First thing you wanted to be when you grew up? A vet.
Gonna tag.................gosh these are so hard. I never know what people like these things and what people don't and I don't wanna tag anyone it would bother. Ahhh, no one lol. If you'd like to answer these questions just pretend I tagged you.

BC: East Kootenay
When I left Nelson, there was no longer ash falling on the car but still a lot of smoke and the sudden 10C drop in temperature from the day before held out, so suddenly I was wearing a sweater & scarf again!
Ferries always make me think of holiday (when we were little, we would take the ferry across the Mediterranean from Tunisia to the Netherlands & France, maybe that's why?), so even with poor view I enjoyed the 35-minute (free!) crossing of Kootenay Lake. Upon landing, I visited the Pilot Bay lighthouse which was in use from 1905 to 1993 to guide ships on the long lake on days like this with poor visibility... I was able to climb tiny stairs to the top but the view remained the same; none! 😂 Somewhat further south, I walked a bit on Lockheart Beach and could only imagine the mountains surrounding it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Still further south on the lake I visited the Glass House, completely made out of embalming bottles that an undertaker had collected through his job (the strangest hobbies one can have!?!😁) and which is still lived in during the winter by his descendants.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Off the lake now, the town of Creston has two grain elevators that I had wanted to take a photo of (given that we're west of the Rockies instead of on the prairies) but they were in such a bad state that I didn't even bother stopping.
I had planned to do some wine tasting in the famous Okanagan wine valley, so instead I did one in the up & coming Creston wine valley at the Baillie-Grohman winery... out of the four that I sampled, the pinot gris was my favourite to go with the baked brie. 😊
I stayed overnight at a nearby private campground, which interestingly had simple garbage bins right next to my site instead of bear/raccoon/other wildlife-proof ones... having been conditioned to always keep food securely packed away, it was a bit unsettling but luckily the night passed uneventful. 👍
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next day, driving northeast up to Radium Hot Springs where there were another two large fires, the smoke was getting worse so I didn't feel like doing anything and cancelled all other attractions I had earmarked as potentially interesting; any viewpoints ofcourse, paddling on a pretty lake, a trout hatchery and a hike to the source of the Columbia River... With the town of Nelson having been unexpectedly the farthest west on my trip in BC, I had hoped that things would improve going back so it was disheartening that nothing changed. I had not wanted to travel to East Kootenay in the first place, and I did not like it now! 😣😅
Instead, I drove straight to my campround at Radium, set up shop and then had a soak in the nearby hot springs which improved my mood. After a tasty jambalaya dinner, I spent the evening playing solitaire and won three times in a row! 😄
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the morning, it rained but there was no smoke, and you cannot imagine how happy I was... I had not thought that I would be so glad to see proper clouds again!😂
At the hot springs the previous day, I had already spotted the first few bighorn sheep (most without big horns though) and now I saw quite a few more on my way out along the canyon. Bighorn sheep don't lose their horns annually such as deer so they grow longer each year, and you can determine their age from the horn rings just like trees... roadkill is unfortunately a major issue, but this was not going to be by me (the duck was enough!!) so I slowed down properly. 👍
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Kootenay National Park, I checked out Olive Lake which is spring-fed and has pretty colours but the rain made it a brief stop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The road follows the Kootenay river, which with its light-blue glacial water was a bit monotone with the grey-white sky, but still pretty and with an impressive flow, not to swim in!
I started a hike crossing the river towards a lake but turned around at the bridge, as I didn't feel at ease. August is prime berry time for bears and as I didn't see anyone else on the trail, it felt a bad choice to continue... I'm not too concerned about black bears as they tend to flee when they see humans (unless they feel threatened), but grizzly bears are aggressive and will attack, against which my hiking poles & whistle are not really up to 😯. Lesson learnt; if I ever come back to BC and the Rockies, I would want to be in a larger group so that I can hike more!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I did do a small hike in a fire restoration area as the parking lot was full and there were more people on the trail. The scenery was a bit haunting with a lot of dead trees but at the same time it had a positive feel to it as new plants were taking over. The area has had four fires in the last 20 years, some natural and some burned on purpose to create meadows, which does not only reduces the risk of devastating, out-of-control fires but also provides important habitat for wildlife who depend on the grasses & shrubs for their survival.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although there was a tiny bit of blue sky during the hike, once I got to the Marble Canyon campground, it rained and rained and rained, so I sat comfortably in the car reading a magazine until there was a dry spell, set up the tent in record time and continued reading there when the rain restarted. 😁
In the morning it still rained on & off but it felt really good to breathe fresh mountain air, so I was not fed up yet. 😅 Out of the 3 Rockies canyons (Johnston in Banff & Maligne in Jasper are the other two), I found my hike at Marble Canyon to be the prettiest, as the river has carved deep into the rocks, leaving a narrow chasm with the water way down below. Impossible to photograph its full length, the waterfall plunging down into the canyon is unbelievable! 😍 As a bonus, the sun even came out!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The other highlight of Kootenay park is the Paint Pots, ochre-red pools that were used by the Indigenous for e.g. body painting. I had a vague recollection that we were disappointed when we were here in 2010 and that got reconfirmed once I got to the 2-3 small pools... nothing special here but the hike to them was pretty enough not to make it a waste.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the weather was flipflopping between rain & sunshine and I didn't want to get rained on another hike, I decided to spend the afternoon in Banff as there were still several things I was interested to explore & it would be fun to go for dinner in town... Banff was just 30 minutes away on the other side of the Continental Divide, which determines whether a rain droplet flows west to the Pacific Ocean or east to the Atlantic Ocean. Kinda cool to think how different those paths would be if you were to be a rain droplet! 😉
Am running out of my photo limit so next post will be about Banff (2nd visit) and Jasper!
Tumblr media
Wildlife: 21 bighorn sheep (only 2 with actual big horns 😜) at Radium
SUPs: none
Hikes: 4 at Kootenay Park
Distance driven from last map: 1,631km

Accidents - July 12, 2024
No injuries were reported Thursday in a two-vehicle accident in Creston. According to a Creston Police report, at approximately 12:19 p.m. a 1996 Ford F250, driven by Douglas W. Wilson, 53, of Afton, was backing out of a parking space at Casey’s General Store on Townline Street when it struck a 2008 Chevrolet Impala, driven by Elizabeth E. Sprague, 16, of Creston. The Impala had just backed out…

Colorado Winter Wonderland It’s no secret that Colorado is among the most beautiful places in North America. It’s home to more than 600 mountains higher than 13,000 feet in elevation, over 20 ski resorts, over 400 breweries, and is one of the most geologically diverse areas in the western United States. In the winter months, Colorado is transformed into a snowy Eden that offers incredible opportunities for adventure and exploration. Imagine yourself transported underneath a sunny blue sky with views of glistening snow-capped mountains, wondrous desert formations, and mysterious geologic playgrounds. The locations below have been hand-picked for their uniqueness and ability to inspire curiosity while inspiring a sense of adventure. Garden of the Gods: Mysterious rock formations at the foot of America's Mountain Millions of years ago, in the Pleistocene Ice Age, rock was glaciated and eroded, creating layer upon layer of sedimentary rock formations found at the Garden of the Gods. Later, the formations were uplifted by a series of geologic mountain-building events that culminated in what we see today – enormous towers and gargantuan rocky fins at the base of the 14,110-foot Pikes Peak, also known as “America's Mountain.” After a big snow storm, the Garden of the Gods is further transformed into a winter playground bound to excite your inner-child. The snow creates a breathtaking color contrast with the red rocks and blue mountainscape, offering travelers a picturesque nature experience not soon to be forgotten. Visitors can explore the park’s 21-miles of trails as they weave in and out of awe-inspiring rock formations while taking in incredible views of one of Colorado’s most iconic mountains. Great Sand Dunes National Park: Winter night sky viewing where mountains and desert meet Because of its remote location, Great Sand Dunes National Park possesses pristine quietness and immaculate night skies, making it the ideal winter destination for those seeking solitude. By day, explore 230 square miles of sand dunes covered in white snow, and by night, watch meteor showers and celestial objects transit the night sky above the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The ark is one of Colorado’s three certified Dark-Sky National Parks recognized by the International Dark Sky Association as having “an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and a nocturnal environment that is specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural heritage, and/or public enjoyment.” Nearby, the small town of Crestone attracts spiritualists, extraterrestrial enthusiasts, and ufologists from across the planet. You may get lucky and spot an otherworldly traveler while stargazing in the park, but if your fortune runs dry, you can always visit this nearby UFO watchtower. Geyser Spring Trail: Colorado's only natural geyser is hidden deep in the forest Your chances of seeing another human on this winter adventure are slim to none due to its remote location, but don’t let that stop you from going to this extraordinary and peculiar place. Picture yourself donning snowshoes, crossing a foot-bridge over the West Dolores River, and peacefully wading through glistening powder on a short 2.5-mile round-trip hike through an abundant aspen and pine forest. Birds are chirping through the slowly falling snowflakes while the slow trickle of nearby hot springs entices you onward. The tracks of rabbits, deer, and other small mammals scatter the ground as you hike up the trail to a sign that indicates that the area is fragile. A short distance further you find yourself standing in front of a bubbling blue pool about the size of two large hot tubs. You may be tempted to enter the warm water, especially on colder days; however, it is not advised since the naturally-occuring eruptions of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide gas displace the oxygen near the water’s surface. Fret not, as excellent beverages and fresh food await you back in the town of Mancos at two establishment favorites - Fenceline Cider and Absolute Bakery & Cafe. If you should arrive at the snowy trail and it has not been packed by another hiker yet, you can use Gaia GPS tracker as your guide. Black Canyon of the Gunnison: A dark deep chasm sparks our imaginations As you drive east from Montrose on Highway 50, you’d never imagine that hidden from view is a massive 2,700 foot deep, 48-mile long gorge carved by the Gunnison River over the past 2 million years. Visiting the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is an absolute treat in the winter – the steep cliffs are covered in snow and the park’s native critters are busy at work, including mule deer, cottontail rabbits, and the occasional Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. The park is quiet and welcoming in winter months, as the north rim is closed, as well as the road beyond the south rim visitor center. However, the road beyond is groomed for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, making for a wonderful winter experience along the canyon. On the way, you can visit a variety of breathtaking viewpoints of the canyon and the Gunnison River below.Your curiosity for the geologic processes that created this place will be sparked as you enjoy the sounds of the bustling wildlife and the wind blowing through the rabbitbrush and scrub oak. As you gaze down into the 2,700 foot chasm before you – which is twice as deep as the Empire State Building is tall – your mind will wonder how it all began. Fortunately, interpretive signs scattered throughout the park tell the unique story of how this place was made. This park is also designated a Dark Sky Park, boasting incredible views of the stars. Bundle up with a thermos of hot chocolate and savor this epic wintery adventure of a lifetime. Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railway: Transport yourself to the 1800s on this winter narrow gauge train ride Whisk yourself back in time on this historic train ride through the mountains of southwest Colorado. Throughout your 5-and-a-half hour round-trip, you’ll journey through downtown Durango, climb up steep snow-covered mountain grades, cross expansive bridges over the Animas River, and gasp in awe of the turquoise water below in the canyon, all from your heated train coach. You’ll gaze in wonder as you pass icicle-blasted pine trees and a frozen river en-route to Cascade Canyon, where you’ll enjoy a fire-side lunch in a frosty mountain paradise. The train crew, dressed in historic regalia, including manual stopwatches, conjure an authentic experience and will give you a taste for the life that miners and pioneers experienced in the early days of the United States. You will be awestruck by the ingenuity and engineering needed to construct this railroad in the 1800s, when it was primarily used to haul gold and silver ore from the San Juan Mountains. It is estimated that over $300 million in precious metals has been transported over this route since its inception. Box Canyon Falls: Explore a mysterious and enchanting mountain slot canyon Ouray is one of Colorado’s most spectacular mountain towns. The town sits at the base of picturesque snow-capped mountains, surrounded by a network of box canyons and staggering cliffs. These canyons now attract thousands of rigorous ice climbers who enjoy the challenge found in Ouray’s world-famous ice park, which sits along a network of cliffs that include the Box Canyon Falls. While the short road to the falls is often closed in winter, you can easily park just up the hill on Camp Bird Road in a clearly marked parking area. As you pass through the gate into the Ouray Ice Park, you’ll immediately find yourself surrounded by steep ice-covered cliffs. A short walk further, you’ll find the closed-for-winter visitor center, which marks the beginning of your walk to the waterfalls. You’ll descend a small trail onto a steel catwalk that wraps around the side of the cliff, overlooking the frozen waterfalls below. The roaring sound of water pummels your ears as it plummets 285 feet to the base of the box canyon and the falls’ spray freezes on nearby rocks. While the stairwell is completely exposed, it is quite safe to descend the steps to the base of the waterfall and inhale the crisp cold air. After your visit, grab a warm burger and a cold beer at Ouray Brewing, the perfect compliment to any arctic adventure. Rattlesnake Canyon Arches: Immerse yourself in Colorado’s arch paradise The desert makes for one of the most inviting environments in winter and Rattlesnake Canyon Arches is no exception. This area is home to some of the most impressive sandstone arches in the United States, and there is nothing like it in Colorado. Rattlesnake Canyon Arches is almost completely devoid of human visitation in the winter. This adventurous 16-mile round-trip hike begins by wrapping around cliffs overlooking a large valley filled with stunning sandstone rock and then drops down into a small canyon where an icy creek can be explored for a true photographer’s paradise. This canyon is protected by large walls that shade the creek from the sun most of the day, allowing the ice to stay frozen. From here, you’ll climb out of the canyon following a steep trail through challenging terrain and then wrap around the mesa where the arches are all located. Once you wrap around to the south side of the mesa, you’ll find yourself on the edge of an expansive cliff overlooking the Colorado National Monument covered in snow, a truly remarkable view unlike many others in the state. This side of the mesa is home to all of the engrossing arches and geologic wonders that can be marveled at for hours. After you return to your car, be sure to check out the breweries close to the trailhead, including Base Camp Provisions, which serves delicious poutine and banh mi sandwiches. Mesa Verde National Park: Ancient homes carved into sandstone For nearly a millennia, the ancestral Puebloan people built and managed flourishing communities on the mesas and within the cliffs found at Mesa Verde. For reasons still unknown to modern humans, in the late 1200s A.D., these thriving people abandoned their homes in the span of a generation, leaving behind stone cities within sheltered alcoves which contained a plethora of cultural clues to the past. Now, these mysterious and captivating relics give us a glimpse into the early story of humankind. Visiting after a snowstorm is truly an incredible way to experience the park. The snowfall transforms this magical place into a wonder-filled playground, begging for exploration. Visit the Spruce Tree House overlook and then hike the Petroglyph Point Trail as a loop to fully immerse yourself in an ancient snow-filled adventure. The trail winds around sandstone alcoves, which are protected from the winter precipitation, forcing you to imagine life as one of the ancestral Puebloan people on this enchanting desert mesa. On your drive in, enjoy the vivid vistas of Hesperus Mountain, which is considered one of the four sacred mountains by the Navajo people. https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/colorado-winter-wonderland

we’re each uniquely created to do a variety of “work” while here on earth since earth is a garden we tend while living in a physical body
(A temporal journey that leads into the eternal space of “timelessness”)
just as Mr. Rogers would express about uniqueness and identity, being made for a “purpose”
not self-worth, but worth that is founded upon Love and its revealed truth. we’re not here seeking our own glory, nor to worship the work of others. although we can certainly appreciate what others do and support them.
and we are meant to have confidence. to not fear man or this world by being courageous in what we come to “believe…” as a form of bravery based in the wonder of our Creator (our heavenly Father)
and so by conserving (and sharing) the most precious treasure of all as the path of Light (Spirit and Son) for others to see (clear)
this is a sacred Body of work (to be sure)
and in this hope (that purifies and renews the heart & mind) we need to align our actions with our values. we are children of Light, separate from the world to which we don’t actually belong, although we’re here for the time being. this certainly doesn’t mean that we look “down” upon anyone, since we’re all actually worthy of a death sentence for our own sins and grace alone sets us free, just as for anybody who is open to receive.
(inner cleansing as a baptism of the Spirit is a treasure that brings peace of mind)

finding the sacred “Ark” of (A new covenant of grace) is the pure gold (refined by pure Light in its True illumination) that we “unearth” in the rebirth of heart (spirit) by the simplest act of choosing to “believe…” and to speak of our faith (in the Son) from a body of garden earth that becomes the Temple of the Spirit (holding guarded treasure in the inner room, the instrumental womb inside, Anew)
A clear expression of (silence & sound)
we have this documented in the sacred writing of Scripture as a collection of books and silent songs (psalms) of instrumental poetry, along with the wisdom of Proverbs and ancient Letters to illuminate the spiritual truth of rebirth (from genesis to Anew, genesis)
All pieced Together in time.
(A deep work of conservation)
even though some have adulterated what began as pure, resulting in so much corruption on beautiful earth, yet Love seeks to restore True nature.
(inside & out)
the world tends to oppose Biblical values, and so bravery is called for to stand. it isn’t hate to share spiritual truth even though some claim it to be. it is actually Love (Light) in its True nature that dispels lies. the truth is that Biblical values offend some people. this isn’t something new and unheard of since the Son (as God in the flesh as a man who walked the earth) certainly offended people. but some still chose to “believe…”

Thursday-Friday-Saturday
November 3-4-5/2022
To avoid a pending -20C winter storm across the Prairies and in the Rocky Mountains, we drove home in three days. We arrived at midnight on Saturday and spent Sunday unpacking and cleaning up.
Along the way, we stopped at the francophone village of Pontiex in Saskatchewan. This was the third small Prairie town that Simon lived in when he was a kid and he was interested in finding the house he had lived in. After more than 50 years, it was very rundown.
We crossed crowsnest pass, with only one skid, and managed to get through before it became clogged with snow. On our last driving day, we bypassed a series of similar passes after Creston by taking a slightly longer route through sun filled valleys and beside windswept lakes, on dry roads past the glass bottle house to reach the Balfour ferry. Once there, we hiked up to an old lighthouse on the nearby ridge and climbed up inside the tower for a great view of the lake and surrounding snowy mountains.
After Nelson, we stopped at the Dukhobor Suspension Bridge outside of Castlegar, where local search and rescue teams were undergoing training exercises from the bridge to the river far below.
After Castlegar, we had an easy passage over Paulson Pass on snow covered roads to reach Christina Lake and Grand Forks. However, we encountered slush, snow, and ice, between Princeton and Hope. this was Allison Pass in Manning Park, that we had visited two months earlier in hot sunshine at high altitude. This time, the road was a mess with two cars upside down and others in the deep snow ditches, several massive tandem trailer trucks stuck or sliding sideways on icy curves, and people driving like crazy for the coast. Simon managed to avoid them all and he says the new car was a joy to drive on ice and in deep unplowed snow.
When we emerged from the mountains at Hope, the storm had caused widespread power failures, so we were unable to take a break from driving. We arrived at Horseshoe Bay in time to catch the last ferry from Vancouver to the Island. Several ferries had been cancelled due to high winds and stormy weather. At home we received a dusting of snow overnight, but the mountains of British Columbia were hard hit and we made the right decision to push through in three days.
