Barnet Fair
Tumblr media
Barnet Horse Fair by John Frederick Herring Senior (1858)
Barnet Fair took place in North London on 4th-6th September in the nineteenth century and was one of the main livestock trading fairs in the capital. It was immensely popular due not only to the roaring trade in horses, but also because it was an excellent day out as it comprised an impressive range of what we would now call pop-up eateries, and a renowned specialist sea food menu. A contemporary source described it, no doubt accurately, as ‘roundabouts and palmists, pickpockets and pretty girls’. Barnet Fair still takes place at Greengate Farm on the first weekend in September, and is now more of a funfair, and it even involves some horse trading, albeit under the watchful eye of the RSPCA.
Another fair traditionally held today was at Crewkerne in Somerset, notable only for furnishing some premature weather lore:
The first rain after Crewkerne Fair,
Is the first rain of winter.

Our landing at Heathrow was so easy, getting through customs etc a breeze and the car hire mob amazing. Ended up in a brand new SUV with instruments we have never seen before. Once driving though we found traffic to be a nightmare. Took us two hours to drive what should have taken 45 minutes.
Arriving at our hotel a tad on the painful side however. Once there our room was clean and on the ground floor. Straight to the bar only to find out it is the “pub with no beer” having been taken over by muslims brothers. Rhondda not happy so an early night. Further agony caused by the only television on offer was watching the Indian Super League cricket. Now Allan not happy.
Wednesday however brightened us up greatly when we visited the city of Christchurch where we did a beautiful walk along garden paths and the seashore prior to doing the main drag and visiting the local Priory. This place is a living museum and we could have stayed for hours just reading the different plaques.
Back on the road we drove through to the Phelips Arms in Crewkerne where the food was great. The floor however had a slight lean and getting up during the night meant one had to put on the foot brakes to avoid running away from the bathroom.
The place also introduced us to electric showers (apparently the new must have in England) which trust me are nothing but shite. They control your water temperature and also the pressure. Never, never consider one for your own use. The room heating was okay but I think in the bathroom non-existent. I dashed to the bathroom when I heard a mighty scream only to discover Rhondda had sat on a very cold seat.
The surrounding area is beautiful and our drives through narrow lanes and picturesque villages everything we wanted. We have set the nav man on Eco and every now and again it does an unneeded detour that is making the drive a lot of fun. Did at one time though see us do three laps of a round about. So confusing.
Today we drove through a lot of the coastal region adding up dropped into Exetor where Rhondda had found the “Underground Passages”, a water system dating back to the 1100s. Amazing to see these tunnels created solely for the purpose of providing running water to the church and community.
These pipes were made of lead, which we all knows kills you, but no one cared about dying of lead poisoning as the majority of people were dying in early 30’s anyway. The city itself is windy and cold but like most English cities has a mix of old and new.
Our touring today ending up in a great English pub in Menhenion located in the high lands. We are currently sitting near a raging fire with a cold beer with a lot of locals. This is what it is all about.

Cash for Charities: Ferne Animal Sanctuary in line to win share of £16k
New Post has been published on https://petnews2day.com/pet-industry-news/pet-charities/cash-for-charities-ferne-animal-sanctuary-in-line-to-win-share-of-16k/
Cash for Charities: Ferne Animal Sanctuary in line to win share of £16k
A SOMERSET sanctuary that has cared for animals for 83 years could receive a share of a huge cash giveaway – but it needs your help.
Our parent company’s charitable arm, The Gannett Foundation, has provided £128,000 to support local charities across the country, and we have £16,000 to distribute in the Wales and West region.
We asked readers to nominate charities which our editorial team narrowed down to 10 across the region – including three in Somerset – that will share the money.
Readers can now collect voting tokens from our newspapers that will be used to allocate cash to each shortlisted charity proportionally.
If your chosen charity receives 25 per cent of all tokens collected, it will receive 25 per cent of the £16,000 (a total of £4,000).
Ferne Animal Sanctuary, based in Wambrook, is one of the charities that will be allocated a share of the money after voting closes on Sunday, November 20.
It plans to use the money to undertake vital refurbishment work to its chinchilla house, which currently provides a home for 12 unwanted chinchillas and degus.
The charity believes the renovation will cost £2,535. This will cover the cost of marine plywood, quartz tiles, sealant, paint, adhesive, storage units, and labour.
The charity rehabilitates and rehomes dogs, cats, horses, ponies and small animals. (Image: Ferne Animal Sanctuary)
Louise Evans, fundraiser at Ferne Animal Sanctuary, said: “As the chinchillas need quite specific heating, we want to completely revamp the chinchilla house and make it more appropriate.
“If we make any more (than the £2,535 figure), we could upgrade it even more.
“We have token collection boxes in each of our charity shops in Ilminster, Chard and Crewkerne, and at our visitor centre in Wambrook.
“With the cost-of-living crisis, we’re getting inundated with people asking us to take in their pets. We tend to rehome and rehabilitate within a 40-mile radius, so we really are a local charity.”
The sanctuary was founded after the outbreak of World War II by Nina Douglas-Hamilton, the Duchess of Hamilton and Brandon, at her Ferne Estate in Dorset.
She founded the charity because she realised that people going to war had nobody to take care of their animals and needed to find them temporary homes.
Since then, it has rehomed and rehabilitated thousands of animals.
In 1975, it moved to its current premises overlooking the River Yarty Valley, and it opened its visitor centre in 2017.
As well as the collection boxes, voting tokens can be sent to our office (County Gazette, Tangier 2, Tangier Central, Taunton, Somerset, TA1 4AS).

Revolutionizing Construction Projects with Scan to BIM Technology in Somerset
youtube
As the construction industry evolves, the use of 3D laser scanning technology is becoming increasingly popular. This technology is revolutionizing the way building information modeling (BIM) is conducted, allowing for greater accuracy and efficiency in the construction process. Scan to BIM, also known as point cloud to BIM, is one of the most powerful tools in this field, providing a complete 3D model of a building, including all of its features, both inside and out. South West Surveys is at the forefront of Scan to BIM in Somerset, providing clients with high-quality and precise data to assist in their construction projects.
Scan to BIM technology works by using a 3D laser scanner to capture data from a building or structure. This data is then converted into a point cloud, which is a large collection of points in 3D space that represent the exact shape and size of the building. This point cloud can then be used to create a BIM model, which is a virtual representation of the building that can be used for a variety of purposes, including design, construction, and maintenance.
There are many benefits to using Scan to BIM technology, particularly for construction projects. One of the most significant advantages is that it can save time and money. Traditional surveying methods can be time-consuming and expensive, requiring many man-hours to complete accurately. Scan to BIM technology can reduce the time required for surveying and modeling, resulting in a faster turnaround time for projects. This can also reduce costs as fewer personnel are required for data collection and modeling, ultimately resulting in a more cost-effective project.
Another significant benefit of Scan to BIM is its accuracy. Traditional surveying methods can be prone to errors and inconsistencies, resulting in inaccurate data. This can lead to costly errors in construction, requiring rework and potentially delaying the project. Scan to BIM technology, on the other hand, captures data with incredible precision, resulting in accurate models that can be used for design and construction with confidence.
Scan-to-BIM technology is also incredibly versatile. The resulting BIM model can be used for a variety of purposes, including clash detection, virtual walkthroughs, and maintenance planning. The 3D model can be used to identify potential issues in the design phase, allowing for adjustments to be made before construction begins. Virtual walkthroughs can be used to provide stakeholders with a detailed understanding of the building, while maintenance planning can help to extend the lifespan of the building.
At South West Surveys, we have extensive experience in using Scan to BIM technology to assist with construction projects in Somerset. Our team of professionals is dedicated to providing our clients with accurate and high-quality data to assist in their projects. We use the latest 3D laser scanning technology to capture data, ensuring that our models are accurate and reliable.
Our Scan to BIM services can be tailored to meet the unique needs of each project. We can provide detailed 3D models of buildings, including all of their features, both inside and out. Our models can be used for a variety of purposes, including design, construction, and maintenance. We can also provide clash detection services, identifying potential issues before construction begins, and virtual walkthroughs, providing stakeholders with a detailed understanding of the building.
In conclusion, Scan to BIM technology is a game-changer in the construction industry, providing accurate and versatile data to assist in construction projects. At South West Surveys, we are committed to providing our clients with high-quality and precise data to help them achieve their goals. Whether you're in the design phase or the construction phase of your project, our Scan to BIM services can help you save time and money while ensuring that your project is accurate and reliable.
