Or Stannis channeling his own inner unhinged Targ by following Melisandre's prophecy to go north that's resulting in Shireen's murder.

Spiralling Thoughts

The quote “I have a tender spot in my heart for cripples and bastards and broken things,” from Tyrion Lannister speaks to me on such a spiritual level it’s kinda fucked.

Like any character in any book, novel or series, that I grow attacked to is one of those three. They could truly be the most horrible person to be written in the novel— a villain with no redemption arc to ever be found, who does as they please when they please. They could be uncaring or cruel to everyone who shows them a glimmer of care and I still would love them. I don’t necessarily go out of my way to excuse their behaviour, I don’t try to make them a better person when I do write of them, I simply understand them and relate to them. I empathize with them, to an almost obsessive-like degree, despite most often never encountering their spirals myself.

I have a spot in my heart for those who are clawed up in self-agony, pain, hurt, deceit and rage— for those who would burn the world down simply to see how high the flames would rise, regardless of who is caught in the inferno. To make someone or something else feel the emotions swirling within them for once, to not be alone for once in their misery.

But do I revel in the pain that they so outwardly describe and feel in writing simply because of the character and the empathy I feel for them? Or, is it more likely that I relate to them because of the self-agony and hatred I feel for myself but would never vocalize or internally justify. Do I love these brutal and beaten characters because I too, am a brutal and beaten character, or because I have far too much empathy and sympathy for those that have been abandoned all their fictional lives?

love that the first lesson jon had to learn at the wall from donal noye and the first lesson that tyrion had to learn in exile from penny were that they might be outcasts, yes, but that they were afforded luxuries due to the privilege of being highborn that they should never forget. that they are mistreated by their world but that they lived lives of comfort that the people around them could only imagine, and that two things may be true at once.

just thinking about cripples, bastards, and broken things. these kids that, by all rights and logic, should've died long ago. bran crawling to his destiny with the weight of House Stark on his shoulders. dany dragging herself through the red waste, holding doreah and loving her til she's gone, and carrying a dynasty with her. jon climbing the wall and climbing his way up the ranks of the nights watch, climbing his way into friendships and family and not letting himself look back at the ones he left behind until he has to because it's arya.

bran looking back because looking forward is terrifying, so he looks for his family in anyway he can (through trees and dreams and wolves). he cries out for them, others answer. bran moving forward by any means necessary, 'our road is north,' because what else is there to do as a prince without a kingdom, a boy without a home. dany, 'if I look back I am lost', looking back at the trail of cripples, bastards, and broken things that have left everything they know to follow her, looking back at herself and hating what she sees, looking back and seeing herself in rhaegar's armor. dany looking forward and seeing chains and collars and saying 'I can do something about this, I will do something about this.'

jon 'kill the boy, let the man be born,' he kills the boy and is killed at 16. and dany never getting to be a girl, never had a choice between girlhood and whatever was needed/desired by others. she is sold at 13, mother at 14, widowed at 14, the last the last of her house at 14, conquerer at 15. bran falls, breaks, and flies at 7.

I just feel bad for show-only fans of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon sometimes, you know? Because the way that GOT ended, and the way HOTD is going to end, it's...bleak. All of the characters in the Dance of the Dragon saga are doomed; no one we truly love and care about is going to make it through, guys. It's horrible, actually. There is no victor--if that's even what we need anyway--and the status quo remains, crushing everyone beneath it's enormous, never-ending wheel: it's grim-dark and heartbreaking.

ASOIAF was supposed to be GRRM's response to that tragedy. A woman's family is usurped, she will take back what is hers, and achieve what her ancestor could not. But sadly, Game of Thrones is not ASOIAF and if you only watch the shows, you are going to see Rhaenyra go the same way as Daenerys, murdered and once again usurped. George wrote Rhaenyra as a tragic character, there is no doubt, but Daenerys is NOT SUPPOSED TO BE. She is meant change the status quo that tramples the smallfolk/women/cripples/ bastards/and broken things/etc. She is meant to live on and plants trees.

If you only watch the shows, all hope is lost. Nothing is solved. Nothing can truly be achieved. Nothing has changed. The wheel continues to turn. My heart aches to think that you will see the parallels and you'll wonder: is this the same exact thing as before? Did we learn anything?

I just hope book fans can get some relief, you know? Because George's ending absolutely cannot leave us without something to look forward to, without something to be proud of. He said bittersweet: not happy, not tragic, not hopeless. What future can the characters of GOT look forward to with an ending like that?

The Dance of the Dragons is the tragic tale, because ASOIAF is the dream of spring.
