Santoña, Victoria and Joyel Marshes Natural Park, Spain (No. 2)

The Natural Park of the Marshes of Santoña, Victoria and Joyel is a Spanish protected natural area located in Cantabria that has three localized areas: the estuary formed by the Asón River (Santoña-Laredo) and the Victoria and Joyel marshes. The whole constitutes the main wetland of the Cantabrian Cornice. It was declared a nature reserve by Law 6/1992, of March 21, of the Head of State, and then reclassified as a natural park by the Law of Cantabria 4/2006, of May 19, on Nature Conservation.​

It occupies 6678 hectares distributed between the municipalities of Ampuero, Argoños, Arnuero, Bárcena de Cicero, Colindres, Escalante, Laredo, Limpias, Noja, Santoña and Voto. This unique enclave, in addition to being prodigal in marine fauna, is used by migratory birds, coming from the north and center of the continent, in their displacement towards warmer lands. Overall, 121 species of birds linked to the aquatic environment have been observed in this natural space to date.

In 1987, the environmental associations SEO (Spanish Ornithological Society, now SEO/BirdLife) and ARCA (Association for the Defense of Natural Resources of Cantabria), filed a complaint with the Commission of the European Communities about the bad situation and danger suffered by the marshes of Santoña (drying up of marsh areas, construction of the Santoña-Argoños section of the Ca-141, etc.), which put at risk the annual stay of thousands of migratory birds, some of them in danger of extinction. That same year, infringement proceedings were opened.​

In March 1992, and before the Judgment of the Court of Luxembourg, Spain declared the Nature Reserve. Finally, in 1993 the Court condemned Spain for failure to fulfil its obligations under the EEC Treaty. being the first environmental condemnation of the European court to Spain.

Crithmum (referencing the plant Crithmum maritimum, known as rock samphire, sea fennel or samphire) also known as the city of sails and spirits. It was once the biggest trading port, connecting the Western part of the continent with all the other world. But now it's just weathered stones on the coastal cliffs.

Monday through Wednesday Karim was still on holiday, so all was tranquil on the domaine. The sun is rising later and later, so now I’m starting at 06.00. I’m still doing a lot of watering.

Thursday I did a big edit of Cephalaria transylvanica because it is a really good self-seeder and it looks best when there are fewer. It is performing well and at least there is something blooming in this heat. The Crithmum maritimum is starting to bloom too and the lime green stems are quite striking.

Ann was here for the weekend ! She arrived Friday evening and we enjoyed a nice dinner in Biot at Restaurant les Arcades. Saturday, after a good sleep-in and leisurely morning, we took a walk around the domaine. I was waiting around to see if the vet would appear. By 14.30 Fatima said I could go and that she would call me if needed. Ann and I jumped in the car and headed for Vallauris. Ann wanted to visit the pottery shops there.

We were home in time for Denis to arrive early to prepare for a barbecue. Éric and Luc arrived at 19h00 for dinner. We enjoyed multi-course meal: a bit of pasta Denis had picked up that morning in Vintimille, then three types of fish, then steak with corn on the cob, spinach and aubergines. It was a great evening for me to get some good French speaking practice.

Sunday, again a nice leisurely morning then we headed up to Saint-Paul de Vence. We had an amazing view and a nice lunch. From there I took Ann to Antibes and we had a nice walk around the old town. We headed home for a cup of tea before I took her to the airport. It was a fun weekend.

I’m working on my project. I want to create lavender, rosemary and creeping thyme.

I use a pot to help create the perfect planting hole.

Im sifting soil first to get a finer particles then using this to bring up the level to my string line.

I put my plant in and fill the gaps with a coir/soil mix.

My first lavender and rosemary in; more to do. Spacing are around 18 inches or 450mm between the plants

samphire rock; Crithmum maritimum. Wonderfully succulent, small, bushy, hardy perennial, with fleshy, grey-green foliage. Tender new shoots have a salty flavour and are rich in vitamin C, essential oils, trace elements and minerals, Though seldom found far from the sea and usually growing on steep cliffs or sandy beaches, it is very adaptable to a variety of normal garden soils, as long as it is allowed to dry out and there is no standing water.

I’m potting up to grow on. I have my pots. I’m half filling with a coir/soil mix

I put the pot of samphire rock in then fill the remaining with seramis clay granules. The clay granules will be a good growing medium.
