For Midwinter my Tav would give Kar’niss a fancy new hairbrush and one of those ugly Christmas sweaters (he thinks it’s both cute and funny)
Tumblr media
Kar’niss ran his fingers through his freshly brushed hair now free of knots and tangles. He’d smile and hold up the hairbrush he’d just been gifted, the handle crafted of fine, sturdy wood and the bristles soft and dense. He collected his long locks into his fingers and used a hair tie to secure the now smooth strands into a loose ponytail.
“This is a very useful gift, thank you,” Kar’niss murmured. “But this sweater...is it truly a surface tradition?”
The garment, which Tav had helped the drider to put on, was the sweater of all time to be sure. A woolly abomination crafted by the most vile of devils, one would surmise. It was a miracle Tav had convinced Kar’niss to get near the eye sore much less wear it. Loud colors of forest green and scarlet red clashed in a patchwork union that screamed amateur stitching and design. A crude Midwinter tree was crocheted in the center of the chest with tiny, painted bells sewn into the design causing Kar’niss to jingle with every movement he made. Either side of the sad excuse for a tree were a pair of snowmen complete with uneven top hats, blackened coal for eyes, and smiles that were stitched so poorly they were lopsided and almost sinister in expression. It’s only saving grace was that it did provide some level of warmth to the wearer at the cost of being viewable from space. It had to make one wonder if Tav adored Kar’niss or if he wanted to test the limits of the driders patience.
Tav sat and watched his companion, balled fists nestled on either side of their face while elbows were propped firmly on the table below. A Cheshire grin stretched their lips near to their capacity, an amused twinkle glittering in his eye. “Oh yes, everyone is meant to wear something like this at least once. I think you look amazing.”
Kar’niss pressed his lips into a thin line with a sliver of doubt in his expression. Yet if this is what made Tav happy then who was he to argue? “As you say. It itches, though.” He scratched his claws over the front of the fabric with such force it made the inlay of bells jingle violently.
His companion chuckled and shook his head. “You don’t have to wear it for long, don’t worry.”
Satisfied with this promise, Kar’niss wandered over and lowered himself to sit on his belly opposite to Tav. There he would remain for the evening, content in sharing his company, even if he jingled all the way in the process.

Building a Witchy Capsule Wardrobe
Tumblr media
The idea of witches has been haunting humankind across continents for centuries. What began as a real-life hysteria that resulted in countless deaths has been reclaimed over time, celebrated in popular television shows (Charmed, Bewitched, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and movies (The Craft, Practical Magic, Kiki's Delivery Service), and even becoming a family-friendly Halloween tradition. Though things like witch trials and witch hunts sound like absurd concepts from a distant and radically ignorant time, in reality accusations of witchcraft continue to be taken seriously in multiple countries to this day. But for those of us lucky enough to live without fear of being criminally accused of collaborating with the devil, we can now have a little fun with the "witch" label.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unsurprisingly, musicians have long embraced the witchy look. Fleetwood Mac frontwoman Stevie Nicks is probably considered by most to have the ultimate witchy rock star aesthetic, complete with an on-stage style of billowing bell sleeves and a discography full of supernatural songs. But it doesn't end there. Florence Welch's ethereal closet of flowing vintage gowns prompted Rolling Stone to describe her as "the Stevie Nicks of the Twilight generation," while Kate Bush has created a style and sound that has inspired many a "is Kate Bush a witch?" Google search. Lorde's predominantly black wardrobe and unconventional movements have also garnered plenty of discussion. "People keep asking me what I will be for Halloween and my answer is that I am Halloween," she once tweeted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though the most common visual presentation of a witch involves a green-skinned woman in a pointy hat riding a broom, a modern witchy wardrobe is decidedly more stylish. With a combination of flowy chiffons, lustrous velvets, chunky knits, tough leathers, delicate silks, and intricate lace fabrics, it's a look that is made all the more impactful due to its layers and textures. A little goth, a little bohemian, a little mystical - a witchy wardrobe can be a fun and spooky style to wear year-round, not just in October. If parsing the look down to a capsule-worthy fifteen pieces, these are the witchy essentials.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whether it's got billowing layers of ruffles or a sleek, simple cut; whether it's a dress adorned with the most dramatic bell sleeves or a shoulder-baring style with no sleeves at all, the black maxi dress is probably the quintessential witchy garment. And while pretty details can be enticing, don't overlook the potential of a basic black maxi. Though it may appear plain on its own, treat it like a canvas onto which you can create endless accessorizing opportunities. Top it with a velvet jacket, wrap it in a chunky belt, or pair it with some lace-up boots, and you've upgraded that nondescript dress and turned it into the ideal witchy outfit.

Perhaps the most extravagant item in any witchy wardrobe is an ornate kimono. It's all in the details: look for fringe, beading, embroidery, sequins, or scalloped lace hems. This is a piece where embellishment is key, so don't go for understated!

The little black dress is a staple for many women, and that's no different when it comes to a witchy one. When you're wanting to wear a dress but don't want quite as much coverage as a maxi provides, a midi, mini, or cocktail-length LBD fits the bill. And if you're wanting to add a little color to your closet, feel free! Deep burgundy, rich purple, and earthy olive green will mix in easily.

Stevie Nicks wouldn't settle for bland outerwear, and neither should you. This is another opportunity to add some eye-catching details to your wardrobe: take things in an edgy rock 'n' roll direction with a motorcycle jacket, keep it romantic with a soft velvet blazer, or go for a unique, structured cape.
Pictured above, left to right: R.Vivimos Ruffled Asymmetric Velvet Jacket Chouyatou Studded Faux Leather Biker Jacket Futurino Open Front Velvet Jacket ASMAX Open Front Longline Blazer Cape
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Modernize a vintage-inspired blouse, or juxtapose an oversized top effortlessly with a pair of black skinny jeans or leggings. Keep it basic, or elevate them by choosing fun fabrics like velvet and faux leather, or cool details like corset lacing and patterned designs.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Can you really call it a witchy wardrobe if you don't have at least one garment you can dramatically swoop around in? A drapey, oversized top pairs perfectly with leggings and skinny jeans, and creates quite a striking silhouette. Look for loose batwing sweaters and asymmetrical, cape-like tops.
Pictured above, left to right: Vivicastle Loose Batwing Dolman Tunic Exlura Off Shoulder Batwing Sweater PRETTYGARDEN Asymmetrical Shirt BELONGSCI Balloon Sleeve V-Neck Blouse

Another versatile, witchy staple is the black maxi skirt. Whether you dress it up with a silky tank or heels, or dress it down with a band tee and boots, it will work for almost any season or situation.

A delicate lace shirt works beautifully in any witchy wardrobe, especially when the dainty, vintage aspect of the fabric is contrasted against something decidedly more modern, like a leather jacket or skinny jean. Whether it's a summer-appropriate crop top or a turtleneck sweater with lacey puffed sleeves, the lace shirt is practically a witchy prerequisite.
Pictured above, left to right: Grabsa Scalloped Sheer Floral Lace Blouse Floerns High Neck Lace Lantern Sleeve Blouse Tobrief Sheer Mesh Lace Peplum Top MakeMeChic Scallop Trim Lace Crop Top

Who doesn't love a good graphic tee? This casual basic can be incorporated into a witchy wardrobe with ease, especially if its print features subject matter involving paganism, witchcraft, astrology, tarot, voodoo, or the occult.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
No other shoe style fits a witchy look better than the lace-up boot. Add a grunge touch with some chunky combat boots, make it sexy with buckle-adorned snakeskin, or go all out with some thigh-highs to peak out from under a lace maxi dress.
Pictured above, left to right: Allegra K Platform Chunky Lace-Up Boots Forever Over-The-Knee Boots MACKIN J Pointed Toe Buckle Boots Dr. Martens Heeled Kendra Boots

Keep the pointy hat in the costume drawer, and make a wide-brimmed fedora your new classic. It's great for staying spooky while keeping the sun out of your eyes at the same time. ;)
Pictured above, left to right: Restyle Wool Witch Hat Lanzom Wide Brim Fedora Clecibor Woolen Felt Fedora Lanzom Classic Wide Brim Panama Hat
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can change the entire vibe of an outfit just by changing your tights. Make it sweet with florals, cosmic with stars and moons, or turn heads with gothic crosses, pentagrams and serpents. If funky patterns aren't your thing, go for a more simple sheer or fishnet style.
Pictured above, left to right: Leg Avenue Celestial Fishnet Tights Leg Avenue Snake Fishnet Tights Leg Avenue Cross Fishnet Tights Leg Avenue Pentagram Fishnet Tights
PAGAN NECKLACE

Make a statement with a nature-inspired necklace. Keep things earth-oriented with colorful geodes, animal skulls and taxidermy pendants, but why stop at just one? Layer on the crystals on chains of various lengths to complete the look.
Pictured above, left to right: MJartoria Moon Pentagram Necklace Set YOOE Crow Skull Necklace Restyle Moon Phases Long Necklace Bivei Wire Wrap Quartz Crystal Necklace
CHUNKY BELT
Few things can alter the look of an outfit as much as the addition of a belt. Define the waist of a flowy dress with a wide one, or add Victorian-esque details with a corset style lace-up variation.

GOTHIC MAKEUP
Now that you've got a witchy wardrobe, add the finishing touches via your make-up choices. Create a smoky eye with a cool-toned neutral eyeshadow palette, then add lip and nail colors in shades of burgundy and black. Voila! You're one witchy woman!

I don't post much about my training on here because I feel like it's probably not interesting but this morning we did running interval training where we got coached on our technique and it was pretty great. I definitely learnt some things!
Then we did a 24 minute thing in groups of 3 where 2 of us did wall balls, kettlebell swings, double unders, sit ups and devil presses while the other person worked on a cardio machine to accumulate calories and we swapped out every 2 minutes. So it was essentially 4 minutes at a time of working through the movements into 2 minutes of cardio.
It was just a really good session this morning. No high skill, just consistent work. Which are the kind of sessions I like the best.
Also it's spooky season so I crocheted a lil' ghost wearing a hat.

Possibly for an AU:
Headcanon that Patty runs a small cleaning service. The name is "The Devil's Cleaning Service". It's mostly a summer job, and occasionally in the winter, but she likes doing it, and she's good at it. Most of her clients are old people that couldn't or didn't have the energy to do the cleaning themselves*, and sometimes their payment will take the form of knitted or crochet things, or baked goods and tea, or old books, rather than money, but Patty doesn't mind. She'll pass on things she doesn't want or need to people that do want or need them, and she appreciates the thought. She likes hanging out and chatting with the old people (the pleasant ones, anyway), and she's good at it.
Once Patty gets out of high school, she could probably do the job full time, if she wanted to, and her elderly customers would make good references. Nina, Patty's mom, helps Patty out, too, especially with the finances and driving.
[*= Patty absolutely counts Dante on her list of "old people", and he calls her "Pattycake" in front of some of her elderly customers in revenge. Which, in turn, led to Patty making Dante clean out said elderly customer's gutters in revenge.
Patty: "You're taller than me anyway, so don't complain! And I'll consider the work as counting towards that debt you owe me."
She also gives him a red coverall to wear while he works, tho, so he doesn't get his clothes dirty. He still looks vaguely ridiculous, even without his red jacket, but as long as he doesn't overheat, then Patty is fine with that. She doesn't give him shit about how he looks, because you can't really care about that when your main job is cleaning. The most she'd do is joke that the bleach or paint stains really bring out his eyes or match his hair. She'd probably give him a hat or something, too, to keep his hair out of his eyes. This is gutter cleaning, after all- you need to be able to see what you're doing.
Dante's injured pride notwithstanding, he does fine, and Patty's customers send Patty over to him with a strawberry cake as a thank you afterwards, so it all evens out.]
You could probably make a Devil May Cry anime episode out of this (basically just Patty going 'round the houses and looking after the dead and dying, very Discworld witch-y), tbh, if somehow a demon got involved in this, but I don't want to think about that right now. Still could be interesting, tho.

whining! complaining! kvetching!
yesterday i didn't eat breakfast before work (running late) and then i forgot to eat lunch (no excuse for this one) and then i wasn't hungry for dinner again (did eat it though). this is very inconvenient and it makes me feel kind of frantic and useless. everyone is like "listen to your body!" okay well my body is not helpful for this kind of thing. that is my fault too but :(
i am trying to eat. i would like to not be a fall-downy spaghetti noodle of a man. aim high right
anyway i am like six weeks away from being completely done with graduate school & i am so excited about it, graduate school sucks so bad. wildly overhyped. group projects are the devil &c. but soon hopefully i will be free of this particular set of problems & will have to find another
i have a job interview on friday for a youth services job (i think it actually focuses on teen services?). it is remote so i don't have to go anywhere and it'll be fine. i do feel kind of despairing about it, like there's no chance that they'll really hire me & i'm not sure i want the job anyway even if they offer it to me (no manager; previous manager widely loathed and now in an involved administrative role; rampant adultism in my library district; red state woes, &c.). i am trying to remain loosely optimistic & i could do important work there if hired! so. fingers crossed i guess.
anyway. list. list time. list as hell
we watched the dragon ball super hero movie this weekend & it was very fun. i love PICCOLO
my partner made bread. we have homemade bread now. i love bread so much. staff of life &c
my coworker is having her baby today & we are all worried for her but mostly really excited. hugged her goodbye & good luck yesterday & she promised to share pictures of the baby in the yoda-ears hat i crocheted for her
sharing work stories on here always feels kind of lame but we do a book giveaway program at my library where kids fill in a little form telling us some stuff they like in a book & then i go pick out a book for them & write them a little note in marker & stamp a bag for them to pick it up in. it's very fun for me. anyway on saturday while i was working a kid came by to pick up their book kit & got really excited about the book i picked out :) if u work @ a library & want more details about this program hmu i love sharing
my brother texted me yesterday looking for recipes, he wants to try branching out & cooking more (he used to live on kraft mac). grateful every day that my brother & i are friends now
pc that i vaguely attempted to help my partner build is really great :) now she has a bunch of stickers on her case. very fun
got a nice decaf & am slowly figuring out how to make decent pourovers. i love coffee
good luck to all of us & if you would like to tell me about a food item (incl. beverages!) that you have really been enjoying lately i would love to hear about it
