Just want to share my story of the past three days with you guys and maybe provide inspiration to someone who just doesn’t think they can do it.My backgroundI’m a teacher by degree, who moved into the Education IT world. During the past three years I’ve had to teach myself to code to get little projects and what not done around the office.The problemFound a niche problem in my space that was directly affecting teachers and other k12 staff. Decided I could aggregate data from multiple sources and offer this info in a newsletter for users.The solutionBuild an automated newsletter that would send a daily email to users at 5:30 everyday with the data they are looking for. Saving them hours of web searches a week.Day OneFound out that all the area schools districts used 1 of 4 provides to host this data. This means I could build 4 scrappers and aggregate data from over 30 data sources. I set to work and got the first 2 scrappers done.Day TwoBuild out and finished the other two web scrappers and input all the URLs so the web scrappers could start looking at data.Day ThreeBuild out a single landing page that describes the problem and allows users to give an email address. Also made an express app to hand this email sign up. Pushed deploy on the front end and backend. Sent out an email to friends and family, got 20 people signup.Technical detailsBackend details:Language: nodejs Framework: express Hosting: heroku Email sending: send grid Cron Scheduling: heroku schedule Database: Postgres Cost: $7 a month till 5000 users Front end details:Language: JavaScript Framework: nuxtjs Hosting: netlify Cost: Free till over 100 gigs of network traffic TakeawayNow yes if you had no coding background this would take you much longer, but what I really want to get across with this story is that you can build an MVP quickly when you put your mind to it. It doesn’t take a CS degree. All in I have probably 25 hours spent on this project and can build on it as time goes on. The problem has been solved and the feedback is coming in. Do not let little things hold you back from finding and solving a problem.

Node.js Cron Jobs By Examples

Ever wanted to do specific things on your application server at certain times without having to physically run them yourself. You want to spend more of your time worrying about productive tasks instead of remembering that you want to move data from one part of the server to another every month. This is where Cron jobs come in.

In your Node applications, the applications of these are endless as they save. In this article, we’ll look at how to create and use Cron jobs in Node applications. To do this, we’ll make a simple application that automatically deletes auto-generated error.log files from the server. Another advantage of Cron jobs is that you can schedule the execution of different scripts at different intervals from your application.

Prerequisites

To follow through this tutorial, you’ll need the following:

Node installed on your machine

NPM installed on your machine

Basic knowledge of JavaScript

Getting Started

To get started, create a new Node application by opening your terminal and creating a new folder for your project. Then initialize it by running the commands:

Install Node Modules

To make this application work we are going to need a couple of dependencies. You can install them by running the following commands:

npm install express node-cron fs

express - powers the web server

node-cron - task scheduler in pure JavaScript for node.js

Create an index.js file and then import the necessary node modules:

Edit the index.js file to look like this:

Now here’s where node-cron comes in. After a while, we want to delete the error log files at intervals without having to do it physically. We will use node-cron to do this. Let’s take a look a simple task first. Add the following to your index.js file:

Now, when we run the server, we get the following result:
