Raging against the machine: Cripplepunk and the “disabled and cute” movement
In 2015, a post on Tumblr appeared by user crpl-punk featuring a picture of the blog’s owner Tyler, dressed in attire of an alternative flair, a cigarette dangling out of their mouth and posing with their cane. The caption of the post read ‘cripple punk’, with Tyler stating that they were “starting a movement”, a statement that would prove to be true.

Tyler, the founder of the cripplepunk movement. The original image is featured on the left.
Tyler would later post more on their blog about their thoughts for the movement, wanting it to be a movement by and for disabled people to dispel against the “inspiration porn” status that many disabled people are relegated to. The movement promotes the agency of disabled people, urging the general public to see them as individuals and not just a “victim” of their disability, and to simultaneously acknowledge that their disability is part of who they are and call for more accessibility. While Tyler was a self-identified punk, the movement has gone beyond the punk aesthetic to encapsulate a wider political stance.
Cripplepunk would also go on to influence another disability based social media movement, “disabled and cute”. While still retaining a political edge, the movement also has a strong self-love stance. The #disabledandcute tag on Instagram boasts over 285,000 posts, with disabled folks displaying themselves and their look proudly. Jessica Kellgreen-Fozard, the woman behind Jessica Out Of The Closet and a deaf and disabled activist with an interest in vintage fashion, stated on her Youtube channel the following:
“People are going to look at you anyway, so you should give them something to look at.”

This quote encapsulates a lot of the ideology of the disabled and cute movement, with many posts to the hashtag showing people proudly displaying their love of fashion. Sprout, a v-tuber and artist (and a full-time wheelchair user) behind sproutwiki, creates illustrations of disabled characters based in fashion subcultures, highlighting his love of fashion.

I believe that these movements and the elevation of disabled voices can help create change to make us further included in our visibility in the fashion world. After all, we do like to look cool too :)

i wish i was perisex sometimes. and i feel guilty for it. because god, i love the community, i love having others understand my experiences but. the feeling of being a mistake or something just doesnt go away. sorry for that mini vent im just frustrated
Anon you don't have to apologize. It's totally okay to vent. Being intersex can be really hard sometimes, especially when we're constantly made to feel like we're wrong for existing. It's exhausting to live in a society that doesn't accept us where we constantly have to educate people on our existence. We're allowed to be angry and upset and not always feel super positive or proud about being intersex, even when we have a lot of love for our community and our activism.
A phrase I think about a lot is "No shame even in shame." @crpl-pnk, the late creator of the C punk movement made a post once talking about disability and unlearning shame and it's stuck with me. There's no shame, even in shame-our whole lives we're told a million different ways that our bodies are wrong and it's okay if there's days we can't escape that. you're not alone and intersex community is always here for you, even on days when it's hard.
💛💜💛

The more I read from Tyler's blog, the more important I feel to share these posts as resources.
I never saw these. All I saw were the rules, and that was through a google search.
The last post is tragic. But within the blog is disabled joy and suffering. People celebrating getting food stamps in the inbox and also people talking about able-bodied coworkers asking disabled employees to take over shifts.
On the mobile app, you can't search the blog tags. The blog doesn't come up on search at all, actually. I only got to it since I knew the name of it.

i have pretty broad amnesia over most of my childhood, but here are two interactions that i, tumblr user crpl punk klavier, remember having with my older brother, of all people:
me being around 12, sometime in 2003 probably, revealing that one of my dearest hobbies when im done with homework is to simply sit on the floor in my room and listen to my heavy metal albums on my cd player and doing nothing else. and my brother responding with, "that is such a waste of time."
a few years later at the dinner table, my brother talking about some musician's live performance. i asked him, then, "but when you see and hear things like that, doesn't it make you want to do the same? don't you want to be on stage with them, write music with them?" "no," says my big brother, and we stare at each other with equal amounts of confusion.

2. My gf @project-butch who was friends with @crpl-punk
6. Physically disabled? 6 to my knowledge
10.
Gynecologist-9/10 respectful but still unintentionally triggered ED
Psychiatrist: 9/10 amazing but office is shit and has blanket policies
Cardiologist: 9/10, known him since birth so can't ask about drug use
GP: 7.5/10, HAES but still all or nothing about changing my diet
Rheumatologist: 7/10, nice and gives me my gabapentin but didn't give me advice about mobility aids and recommended hydrotherapy which is financially infeasible
Pain management: 6/10, listens to me about muscle relaxers, pain contracts for even mmj, recommended PT
don't go there anymore but
endocrinologist; 1/10, fucked up my test results at first, told me to lose weight even after I told them I had an ED
gastroenterologist: 2/10, gave me ok meds but never returned test results
Liver specialist: went on about weight loss after I told him I had an ED until I was sobbing and my gf who had seen him since birth was demanding him to shut the fuck up
Honestly all my worst experiences with doctors have been fatphobia and diet culture, not my disability

I got diagnosed with fibromyalgia recently but I think it’s wrong. 1. Do you have suggestions on what to do next, and 2. When am I physically disabled enough to participate in cripplepunk?
unfortunately im in the same place (fibro and chronic fatigue dx but some symptoms i have do not line up with strictly fibro) and i've had no luck getting useful help since i started seeking treatment in 2021.
my best piece of advice is write down/record all u can, and change drs if they don't listen. its basically impossible to change a drs mind once they decide they know what's wrong with you.
as for cripplepunk, read the cripplepunk rules and guidelines (easily googleable, also u can search on Tai's blog which is still up (@crpl-pnk ). do u agree with those guidelines and u fit the listed description of who cpunk is for? great! welcome to cripplepunk. i cannot decide if u can be cripplepunk except for if u self id as an able bodied person then u absolutely can't be cripplepunk. u must bare minimum self id as physically disabled in some way

1, 2, 5!
what disability/ies do you have? (and are they mental, physical, or both?)
lots & lots! y'all know I don't love psych terminology for myself and very strongly want to dismantle the DSM, so first and foremost i am Mad! i will always be crazy before anything else. some labels that have come to me over the years include bipolar w/ psychosis, PTSD, and autism. I am a disorderly eater in multiple ways. I have Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, currently in the process of seeing if I have CAH-X. got diagnosed with POTS and then undiagnosed with POTS and then rediagnosed with POTS, so I'm not super confident in that diagnosis and want to see if some things might have been caused by CAH X. But as it stands they think I have POTS so. tons of random symptoms of things like anemia, my GI issues, etc that I don't know what's causing it yet but honestly are why me and my doctors are looking into CAH X.
2. how long have you known you're disabled? does that match up with diagnosis?
I didn't use the language of disability for myself until I was 14, but there were things I experienced before then (spent months in the hospital as a toddler, lots of medical intervention throughout my life, first psychotic episode at 11, etc). diagnosis is something that has haunted me throughout my life-rarely helpful, often harmful, but never ever neutral. was diagnosed as intersex at 14, diagnosed as crazybrokendangerous at 18. forever grateful that my first understanding of myself as a disabled person was shaped out of the cripple punk movement back in 2015 when I was 14 instead of by the ways diagnosis was weaponized against me. forever so, so grateful to Tyler (@crpl-pnk and the cripple punk movement. even if today it looks slightly different than back then, i genuinely think it saved my life by showing a future where my disabled anger was welcomed without me having to "overcome" my disabilities in order to belong.
5. if you have multiple disabilities: do they affect each other? how?
absolutely. my CAH is most likely causing the comorbidities that we're investigating right now and is more likely the cause of underlying stuff like POTS. the medical trauma I experienced as a result of being intersex directly impacted my psychosis and delusions. as a mad + disabled person I think that my madness affects me in a positive way in terms of coping with my other disabilities, and that madness has offered me a lot of possibilities that I don't think I would have seen without it. i don't always see my body and mind as separate; my disorderly eating caused me to use mobility aids, for example, and my psychosis is at home in my body as my intersex traits. they are distinct in some ways but beautifully connected in many others.
thanks for the ask!
