CTF Photonics - CTF-3 Laser Aiming Module

So far it seems very well-constructed. The CNC billet 6065 aluminum body feels solid, the rail clamp is well thought-out, the and the battery caps don't impede button activation as much as I thought they would.

However, getting the bad out of the way first, the adjustment turrets, contrary to my original assumption, do not feature 'clicky' MOA increments - they seem like they've got an internal o-ring somewhere to tension the screws for zeroing adjustment and the marks on the vertical turret are just there as witness marks more than actual adjustments.

Additionally the screws are small and seem easy to strip for how much pressure's needed to turn them. But for they do seem like they'll hold zero no issue once adjusted, for what it's worth.

The unit is incredibly low-profile as you would expect - an IR-only laser diode sits center over bore with what amounts to two independent 300-style scout flashlight bodies sitting saddleback on either side of the top rail. One holds a white light and the other would hold some form of IR illuminator head (B.E. Meyers KIJI, Z-Bolt Blazer, 3EIR Vulcan).

It seems like a good solution for secondary or tertiary builds that you wanna tack NV capabilities onto. Incidentally, due to being so low-profile, it's the perfect MFAL for an AK or other rifles that you can't put excessively tall optic risers on due to the stock being lower than the top of the receiver.

I've ordered a Z-Bolt Blazer Head and will be donating this laser to @bureau-of-mines' AK in trade for a Holosun IRIS-3 or AMMJ Penumbra (depending on whether the former restocks before I make up the additional cash to afford the latter).

For the sake of comparison, here's the CTF-3 without any heads in between a Steiner DBAL D2 and an EG NGAL.

The CTF-3 seems like a large unit, but it's very flat and carries most of its weight in the integral flashlight bodies, which it spreads out nicely. Plus the fact it eliminates a separate white light setup also cuts down greatly on weight.

While I don't recommend this unit for AR15's (given the abundance of better options now), I'd say it still has a niche to fill. Basically, it's a DIR-V that traded the lighter weight and the crane port for superior build quality and sheer modularity. And also not costing $2000 fucking dollars.

Your fingerprint is actually 3D − research into holograms could improve forensic fingerprint analysis

When you use your fingerprint to unlock your smartphone, your phone is looking at a two-dimensional pattern to determine whether it’s the correct fingerprint before it unlocks for you. But the imprint your finger leaves on the surface of the button is actually a 3D structure called a fingermark.

Fingermarks are made up of tiny ridges of oil from your skin. Each ridge is only a few microns tall, or a few hundredths of the thickness of human hair.

Biometric identifiers record fingermarks only as 2D pictures, and although these carry a lot of information, there’s a lot missing. A 2D fingerprint neglects the depth of the fingermark, including pores and scars buried in the ridges of fingers that are difficult to see.

I’m an educator and scientist who studies holography, a field of research that focuses on how to display 3D information. My lab has created a way to map and visualize fingermarks in three dimensions from any perspective on a computer – using digital holography.

Fingermark types

Scientists categorize fingermarks as either patent, plastic or latent, depending on how visible they are when left on a surface.

Patent fingermarks are the most visible type – bloody fingerprints at crime scenes are one example. Plastic fingermarks are found on soft surfaces, such as clay, Play-Doh or chocolate bars. The human eye can see both patent and plastic fingermarks quite easily.

The least visible are latent fingermarks. These are usually found on hard surfaces such as glass, metals, woods and plastics. To make them out, a fingerprint examiner has to use physical or chemical methods such as dusting with powder, creating chemical reactions with appropriate reagents or cyanoacrylate fuming.

Cyanoacrylate makes super glue in its liquid form, but as a gas it can make latent fingermarks visible. Researchers develop the prints by letting cyanoacrylate vapor molecules react with components in the latent fingerprint residue.

The geometric details on fingermarks are categorized into three levels. Level 1 encompasses visible ridge patterns, so loops, whorls and arches. Level 2 refers to minutiae or small details, such as bifurcations, endings, eyes and hooks.

Finally, Level 3 features, such as pores, scars and creases, are too small for the human eye to resolve. This is where optical techniques like holography come in handy, since optical wavelengths are in the order of microns, small enough to make out small details on an object.

Developing fingermark holograms

Since fingermarks are usually collected as 2D pictures, and holograms display 3D information, my team wanted to develop a technique that can show all the 3D topological characteristics of a fingermark.

To do this, we’ve been collaborating with Akhlesh Lakhtakia’s group at Penn State. They developed a specialized technique that deposits a nanoscale columnar thin film layer, called a CTF, on top of the fingermark to develop and preserve it.

Columnar thin films are dense pillars of glassy material that uniformly cover the fingermark, like a dense growth of identical trees in a forest. Just as the tops of these trees would reflect the topology of the ground, the tops of these columnar thin films replicate the 3D structure of the fingermarks on which they are deposited.

To make a hologram of something like a 3D fingermark, researchers split light from a laser into two parts. One part, called the reference wave, shines directly on a digital camera. The other wave shines on the object, in this case the fingermark.

If the object is reflective, the reflected light is also directed to the digital camera and superimposed on the reference wave.

The superposition of waves – both from the reference and the object – creates an interference pattern, which is called a hologram. In digital holography, this hologram, which is a 2D picture, is recorded in the digital camera. Researchers then import the hologram to a computer, where they can use the physical laws of wave propagation to figure out where the light waves from the laser bounced off different parts of the object.

This process allows them to reconstruct the object as a 3D picture.

So, the reconstructed hologram has all the 3D details of the object, and you can now visualize the 3D object on a laptop from any perspective.

Picking up fingermarks

In 2017, our collaboration reported our first results, where we made 3D pictures of latent fingermarks using the CTF technique. We recorded holograms of the CTF-developed fingermarks with two different wavelengths of light – green and blue – generated from a laser. Using two different wavelengths allowed us to make out tiny details such as pores in the 3D reconstructions.

Lakhtakia’s research group has deposited hundreds of fingermarks on glass, wood and plastic. They’ve then let them age in different environments, at various temperatures and humidity levels, before coating them with CTF film to pick up the fingerprint. My group records the digital holograms of these fingermarks and visualizes them in 3D on a computer.

We have also started working on a better 3D fingermark analysis plan to help identify crime suspects.

The Miami Valley Regional Crime Lab in Dayton, Ohio, has graded the quality of the fingermarks captured by Lakhtakia’s research group. It will also help us develop a new method for grading the 3D holographic reconstructions, something that does not currently exist. This may involve creating categories to classify how clear the 3D renderings of the fingermarks are.

The use of fingerprints as unique identifiers has a long history, going back to ancient Babylonian and Chinese civilizations. They’ve been used for forensic purposes since the late 1890s, starting in Calcutta, India. Our work aims to build on this rich history and use cutting-edge technologies to improve fingermark analysis.

It's Friday, and it's also Earth, Wind, and Please Set Me on Fire So That I May Burn Away The Wickedness of this Terrible Earth from My Soul day. I don't know what it is about today, but I'm at a loss for patience, mostly due to other people's impatience. I even allowed myself an extra hour of sleep this morning just so I could be fresh and rested for today's shenanigans, but I'm already on my 4th cup of coffee and at wit's end. At least in a few hours it will all be over, and then maybe I can work on catching up with everything tomorrow when it's bound to be less busy.  

The vacant east wing of the mall is beginning to look like some kind of post-apocalyptic ruins more than it does a shopping mall. Lots of bare concrete, debris, and pillars make it look like a really cool place to play laser tag or something. That's a pretty sweet idea, right? That's how we'll save the Grand Avenue Mall, by turning it into one big bitchin' laser tag arena. Or paintball. Or some kind of LARP shit.

I know one person I'd want on my team in laser tag, and that's The Game. He seems like he'd be a team player, which is important. You can't have people going rogue if you want to complete the objective. HOLY SHIT. I am suddenly now reminded of a series of Capture the Flag games played in the woods behind my parents house about 14 years ago that involved very large teams. I was the captain of one team because I knew the terrain the best, and we were called THE BEANS. Wow. That completely escaped my mind until right now as I write this review. Let me tell you, The Beans always won... I would end up going on to date the opposing team's captain for a couple years, but I don't think we could ever get past our differences from the CTF days. It all amounted nothing, just like so much effort in this world. Our respective armies had fought so hard and sacrificed so much, and I don't think we could ever get past that. Things are still civil, of course. 

As I approached the counter in the empty food court today, The Game said "flour burrito, brown rice, both beans?" and I was like, "hell yeah." He loaded up the beans and rice just how I like it. I was honestly impressed that he was able to fit the whole thing into one tortilla. I thought for sure he was going to need to go for the double, but that's not how it played out. It wasn't the nicest wrap, but it held together. As I mentioned last time, Qdoba gifted me a free chips and guacamole for buying a burrito over the weekend of the Feast of St. Patrick, but I decided not to cash in on that offer today when I saw how big he was making my burrito. I'll save it for another time. I don't need those extra calories today... or probably ever. I'm starting to feel my age, friends. I'm not sure how long I can keep up this lifestyle before I start getting fat...

One more important announcement, it's the boss's birthday this weekend! I know very few of you know her or appreciate her like I do, but maybe wish her a happy birthday in your hearts. She's the only reason you're reading my dumb bullshit about laser tag, capture the flag, and The Beans right now. Just put that energy out in the universe. Happy Birthday, Hannah!

Việc lược bỏ bớt này sẽ khiến cho quá trình in hạn chế tối đa những rủi ro trong in ấn, giảm đi sự chồng màu định vị cũng như là kiểm soát được chất lượng của bản in sản phẩm. Công nghệ này bởi vì có những ưu điểm vượt trội nên đã có nhiều người trên thế giới tin dùng. Tìm hiểu về ngành Kỹ thuật in Ngành Kỹ thuật in còn được một số trường Đại học gọi là ngành Công nghệ kỹ thuật in là một ngành đào tạo ra đội ngũ kỹ sư công nghệ, quản lý sản xuất ra những sản phẩm in ấn có chất lượng cao, đóng góp cho nguồn lao động, nhân sự cho ngành in ấn. Trong khung chương trình đào tạo của ngành này, bạn sẽ được học những kỹ thuật tổng hợp chuyên sâu về khoa học in ấn, cách sử dụng vận hành máy móc như máy tính, máy in, cách sử dụng màu, vật liệu, công nghệ thông tin,… Bên cạnh đó mục tiêu mà ngành hướng tới cho sinh viên là khả năng tự học, tự nghiên cứu để phát triển theo con đường, hướng đi riêng lĩnh vực tạp chí, sách báo, truyền thông, bao bì, quảng cáo, quản lý các ứng dụng trong lĩnh vực truyền thông,… Bạn có dự định làm trong ngành in ấn không? Congratulations Capture the Coin participants!

We are pleased to announce the completion of our Blockchain Security competition — Capture the Coin. Our mission was to promote the field of blockchain security and educate players in the areas of cryptography, smart contracts, forensic analysis, malware, and others. We are excited that so many of you participated and hopefully inspired to join the good fight to make the future open financial system safer for all.

Prizes

The prize for all of the top contest participants is a custom laser etched steel wallet. In case you are not familiar, steel wallets can be used to backup the mnemonic seeds used to unlock all of the cryptocurrency wallets such as Coinbase Wallet.

Out of the 22 challenges, cryptography category had the least amount of solves and trivia the most. Our hardest cryptography challenge, Linkable Payments, had only 11 solves and our easiest challenge, Satoshi, had 136 solves.

The majority of players with solutions came from the US, followed by Singapore, France, UK, and other countries in Europe.

CTF Photonics CTF3 + Malkoff E1HTv2 and Z-Bolt Blazer IR Heads

A follow-up to the previous post, this unit officially belongs to @bureau-of-mines' AK build and figured I'd give my own more thorough early impressions on it so far - despite the presence of other devices hitting the market around the same time and price bracket as this, I still feel like the CTF3 has a niche of its own to fill.

The key selling point to this unit is its modularity - in lieu of an onboard IR illuminator, the CTF3 features effectively two 3V Scout Flashlight bodies machined into the laser body that sit saddleback on either side of the top rail. This allows you to interchange whatever IR or white light heads you need for your specific setup.

The fire buttons are surprisingly easy to reach despite the protruding battery caps; the center button being laser only and the smaller left and right buttons activating both the laser and the corresponding light body.

Sadly this means your IR laser will be activated when using the white light, and there's also no constant-on function for the light bodies, but such is life.

In my opinion, the greatest benefit of the CTF3 is its low profile - this really is the perfect laser for an AK or other rifle that force you to use lower-mounted optics. It fills the same niche as the 3EIR DIR Series, except it's more modular, made of higher quality materials, asks roughly half the cost (as far as a base unit without heads), and eliminates a separate white light setup, keeping the overall cost of accessories down.

Obviously, you also lose a remote cable port, vis laser, power output controls, the ability to co-align the illuminator with the laser dot, and divergence control is greatly limited as well (unless you get an IR Blazer Head), but you get the benefit of having less integral components to fail within the laser body itself.

Although I have a massive bias to ancient laser boxes, the CTF3 is a very cool unit and I love how it works on "westernized" AK setups (though how well it handles 7.62x39 is yet to be determined). Love to see more from CTF going forwards.
