Day 13 of January extinct birds - the Delalande's coua
Couas are terrestrial, non-parasitic cuckoos that are endemic to Madagascar. This coua might have been only on the island of Sainte-Marie to the east of Madagascar, though there are claims they were on the mainland too. There have been no confirmed reports since 1834, but things are a little vague.

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Most parents in the animal kingdom provide the only care to their young, if they provide any at all. The greater ani is a remarkable exception. Nests are communal, shared by two to five pairs, and the eggs are all cared for collectively. Hatched chicks are free to leave after only 5 days, but will be fed for several weeks if they choose to stay longer-- another unusual trait, as most mothers encourage independence as soon as possible.
