Took me a long time to read; this one. Months actually, partly because I was between books but mostly because I kept re-reading chapters. At other times I just could not bear to meet the pain of loss of a homeland and the associated memories it captures in its pages. Basharat Peer’s Curfewed Night is a poignant memoir of a home, its vast and varied history – both contemporary and old, told through the emphatic eyes of an insider and the objectivity of a reporter.  It is not just the lives of the militants and the ordinary citizens that draws author’s compassion, but also the depiction of the lives of average soldiers (he closes the book with one such incidence) and how their inherent humaneness is transformed into something else is what imbues the narrative with essential complexity and gravitas. For someone who has experienced Jammu and Kashmir first hand (albeit only for two weeks) as a theatre artist in the early 2000s, seen daily lives of people in the conflict-torn valley and the homeless refugees in Jammu and Delhi, Peer’s peek into region is at once immediate and strikingly honest. One can almost see how the author himself is transformed in the telling of the tale. This is powerful telling of a story which is unfolding even today. Unpretentious and truthful, it makes you uncomfortable, challenging your notions of right and wrong. Most importantly, this book makes a call for peace – for peace is only way and only hope. Grim and moving – remains with you long after you have put it down.  . . . #bookstagram #books #booklovers #instabooks #mustread #bookaddict #bookaholic #penguin #Kashmir #Jammu #war #peace #hope #courage #writersofinstagram #review #instareview #CurfewedNight #BasharatPeer #delhi #india

"The line of control did not run through 576 kilometres of militarised mountains . . . It ran through everything a Kashmiri, an Indian and a Pakistani said, wrote, and did. . . It ran through the reels of Bollywood coming to life in dark theatres, it ran through conversations in coffee shops and on television screens showing cricket matches, it ran through families and dinner talk, it ran through whispers of lovers. And it ran through our grief, our anger, our tears, and our silence." what do you think Peer is trying 5.
