Dow’s Machine Learning Journey In International Trade – Forbes

Dow Chemical is in the midst of a digital transformation. They have set up Centers to test out new and emerging technologies. They have had success in developing valuable intellectual property in the area of trade classifications.
Dr. John Wassick, Integrated Supply Chain Technology Fellow, Dow Inc. DD , was on a supply chain panel at the ARC Industry Forum in Orlando. Dr. Wassick leads the Digital Fulfilment Center (DFC) that focuses on “competitively advantageous technology” to develop new solutions for the supply chain market. In this context he referred to the company’s Digital Operations Center (DOC) – an idea incubator and proof-of-concept center for operations. Dow has a global manufacturing footprint and a complex international supply chain, as it produces and ships products worldwide.
Trade Classification at Dow
For Dow, international trade offers a “huge, complex opportunity.” Dow has in excess of 600,000 cross border shipments a year. Out of these, around 150,000 of these shipments must be analyzed by trade experts to ensure the classification is correct. At the heart of international trade is the assignment of a harmonized tariff code to any material that crosses a border. Goods need to be correctly classified so that the right tariffs are paid. Underpayment of duties can lead to huge fines and bad publicity. Incorrect classifications can also lead to goods being help up at customers, impacting customer services.
The Harmonized System (HS) is a commodity description and coding system, which forms the basis upon which all goods are identified for customs. The HS is used by customs authorities worldwide. Using the right HS code allows companies to pay the correct tariffs. There is an incredible gap between how products are described commercially by trade and how they are expressed in the national customs tariff schedules. This has resulted in error rates of 30%. Worse, every country or trading bloc has its own taxonomy beyond the international 6-digit level.
To say that classifying trade goods is nonintuitive would be an understatement. What a regular person would describe as “baby food” in HS speak is known as a “homogenized composite food preparation;” a “hair blower” is an “electrothermic hair dressing apparatus;” before you can classify “rayon” you have to know whether this is an “artificial” or a “synthetic” fiber; and if you were classifying an automotive part, like a car alarm, you might think you would go to the section of the HS code focused on automobiles, but no – this is an electronic signaling device. To do the tariff classification, there has to be an understanding of the components in the material, the properties of the materials, who the end users are, and what free trade agreements apply. While some materials are not all that hard to classify, chemicals tend to be difficult to classify.
Because of these difficulties, governments look for “good faith” efforts by importers and exporters. Further, the information needed for classification may not be available on the company’s ERP system or in other company systems, said Dr. Wassick.
There are also different philosophical approaches to trade classification. Some companies take the approach that if there is a gray area, choose the classification that will result in lower taxes. Other companies have a limited appetite for risk and work hard to choose the “correct” classification. Dr. Wassick said that Dow is rather risk averse and classification is done after careful verification. Also, to prove good faith, if they are challenged at any stage, there’s a paper trail to prove how the decision was arrived at.
Dow has dealt with this problem for years and has developed subject matter expertise, which has evolved into intellectual property. The next step is to use digitalization to monetize this intellectual property to address the specific problem of classification of cross-border shipments.
Dow has been doing trade classifications for many years and has now captured this expertise through machine learning. The process involves extracting the important features of the pre-classified materials. Next a machine is trained using a learning algorithm for classification. Once the machine learning algorithm is trained, it can classify new materials as they come in, explained Dr. Wassick. Dow’s Digital Fulfilment Center has applied for a patent for this actual algorithm. Dow has been approached to sell this technology to off-the-shelf software companies.
Dow, Logistics Digitization, and the Future
Dow is looking beyond international trade operations; they are thinking about edge computing and IoT, how to better utilize analytics, and provide new decision support tools. “Ultimately, where we’re headed is the use of multi-agent systems, where you have intelligent software agents working in concert,” said Dr. Wassick.
In a global supply chain, the order-delivery process is not as simple as it seems, explained Dr. Wassick. Processing an order is not always smooth – the customer may have defaulted on payments, or there’s a change of delivery destination, or transport problems. However, from a customer experience perspective, Dow wants to instill confidence that their order will be delivered on time; and to be able to do that all the barriers, clutter, and exceptions have been dealt with.

Introducing Acumatica Construction Edition
Acumatica, the world’s fastest-growing cloud ERP company, today announced the release of Acumatica Construction Edition, an end-to-end cloud business management system for general contractors, home builders, subcontractors, specialty contractors and land developers. The Construction Edition is the latest fully integrated cloud solution from Acumatica, furthering its advances in domain-specific workloads and following fast on the heels of Commerce Edition, Field Services Edition, and Manufacturing Edition.
“Just as we’ve done with our other industry solutions, we listened to the underserved customers of decades-old legacy software vendors and leveraged the power of the Acumatica Cloud xRP Platform to design a modern, fully-featured Cloud solution for the construction industry,” said Jon Roskill, CEO, Acumatica.  “The Acumatica Construction Edition will be delivered to customers through an experienced and knowledgeable VAR channel, bringing the value of a true cloud and mobile solution to all.”
Working closely with industry experts and leading partners in the Construction industry, Acumatica Construction Edition was designed to address the needs and demands of modern construction companies. It utilizes the Acumatica Cloud xRP platform and core application suites to also offer Project Accounting, Compliance Management, Retainage, Change Orders, Job Costing, and Document Management. Acumatica Construction Edition is a true cloud solution that includes Open API 2.0 standards for creating and maintaining multi-cloud interfaces such as field operations with Procore and Hyphen Solutions, payroll with Criterion, visual scheduling with SmartSheet, productivity tools with Microsoft Office 365, electronic signatures with DocuSign and Adobe, and further integrations with other business applications.
“We are really excited about our new integrations to Procore Technologies and Hyphen Solutions,” said Ajoy Krishnamoorthy, VP of Platform Strategy at Acumatica. “The interfaces are cutting edge and real time. We’re seeing good demand for Procore from commercial builders, and the Hyphen SupplyPro integration has incredible value for homebuilders and suppliers.”
“When you combine features like project and cost management with contracts, commitments, subcontracts, compliance, retainage and other industry capabilities and then integrate those features directly with Hyphen SupplyPro, you can significantly lower the cost of doing business,” said Felix Vasquez, CEO of Hyphen Solutions.
Supporting the need for increased technology adoption in the construction sector is data from multinational global advisory and services network PwC, which found that 64 percent of construction and engineering industry CEOs either agree or strongly agree that their companies face more threats than three years ago. PwC also notes that the industry has lagged in adopting new technology, with some companies still using antiquated, paper-based processes.
Visit Acumatica at booth W5360 at the 2018 International Builders’ Show in Orlando, and booth C3408 at the World of Concrete in Las Vegas.

A Brief History of ERP Software Part Three – From ASPs to the Cloud
https://goo.gl/uZ6bEA
Pat Garrehy knows ERP software. The founder, President, and CEO of Rootstock Software, Mr. Garrehy has over 30 years of management, sales and technical experience as a software architect and engineer. Mr. Garrehy recently sat down to share his thoughts on how ERP software has changed over his distinguished career. Here is the conclusion of that discussion.
Part Three – From ASPs to the Cloud
Application Service Providers
I made my first attempt at cloud ERP in the early 2000’s when my prior company, Relevant,  experimented with hosting our on-premise software using Citrix. I remember being on the podium in a conference in Orlando talking about the future being ASP (Application Service Providers). An ASP is a business providing computer-based services to customers over a network; for example, access to a particular software application. The internet was in its infancy and couldn’t really support what we know as the cloud today.
The ASP model did give us an opportunity to understand the economics of software, what  hosting software would be like, and how to gauge market acceptability. I decided that the ERP market really wasn’t ready to transform to this technology and waited to see how the technologies and the market would unfold.
First-Generation Cloud
By 2008, small companies were buying into the cloud for service companies, distribution, retail and light manufacturing. In particular, NetSuite was having some success, so our company Rootstock partnered with them. In order to support the industrial strength product companies, especially manufacturing, we had to develop software that layered on top and with Netsuite for support of the core manufacturing functionality.
The software was on the NetSuite server but for performance reasons, we had to put some of the software such as MRP on our own server. Yet compared to the systems of the past, this was more affordable and we really didn’t have to worry about operating systems or database systems. Compared to the previous generation of on-premise and client-server ERP software, this first generation cloud ERP was less expensive for the customer. In certain areas, it was easier to use, implement and develop.
Rootstock and Salesforce
Looking forward, we realized that there would be technological challenges keeping the two in sync. The Netsuite software was written in a different language than the development software that they provided to their partners. This meant that software such as reporting tools and record locking capability could not cross both technologies. If Rootstock wanted to integrate with other partners’ software, that was going to be difficult.
Additionally, our database architecture was more suited to a complex manufacturer and distributor, especially in multi division and multisite environments with complex engineering, planning and cost accounting requirements. Since that is the core of an ERP system for a manufacturer, we realized that it would be very difficult to provide the enhancements required and still be influenced and sometimes governed by an architecture that was developed for other types of companies.
Because of our ERP heritage, Rootstock understood that ERP packages need to customizable. This meant that the platform technology must support tailoring and customizing at the customer site, and these customizations need to work even when the ERP package incorporates additional feature sets of its own. With the right platform, Rootstock would be able to more easily plan what functionality to put into the core engine and what would be customized for an individual organization.
By 2010, it became clear that Salesforce would be one of the future technologies that came closest to our vision of the ideal platform. Indeed, the Salesforce ecosystem has grown substantially since then and the combination of Rootstock on the Salesforce platform is supporting this earlier vision.
Today, Rootstock is functionally equivalent to many of the ERP packages of the previous generation. When you look at the bigger picture, it will surpass the functionality of the prior packages when you consider that we can quickly add other component software to the breadth of the offering rather than trying to develop everything.
The Future
I believe that the combination of Rootstock functionality and Salesforce platform capability set today’s standard for a true ERP cloud system. Looking to the future, Rootstock Cloud ERP on Salesforce will soon surpass the functional breadth and depth of older generation ERP systems. Salesforce provides additional capabilities such as workflows, mobile, dashboards, artificial intelligence, predictive analytics and the Internet of Things. When integrated with ERP, this will define the next standard and I believe it is a safe bet that our cloud ERP software will benefit from these advancements in technology.
