Design Associate Derek Stearns measures an oversized work on paper in our showroom -- this is part of our conditioning process (the art has been pixelated for privacy). For every work of art we frame, we take careful note of its physical condition upon arrival to our shop -- including any mold or foxing; tears, dents or creases; and past framing/environmental damage, like mat burn -- and note it on a condition report. This document is then used both as a reference point for our staff who fit the art in its frame, and as a record for our client. Swipe left to see the oil on paper by American artist Florence Brillinger (1891 - 1984) that we recently framed for interior designer Steven Gambrel. The profile, specially milled in our LIC shop, is based on an American period frame from the 1940s — similar designs have been used to frame paintings by Edward Hopper. (1/2) Welder Keara Martin brazes a small frame in our metal shop. Brazing is a type of oxy-acetylene welding, where two pieces of metal are joined by flowing a filler metal — one with a lower melting point — into a joint. Every Bark frame is custom made unique to the artwork it protects. Here, a frame we recently made for a private client. The 12-ply window mat (we can make up to 20-ply mats) sets the art back dramatically. The curved shape of the frame profile echoes lines present in the artwork, a drawing by John Lee Jones. The figure of the wood is emphasized by the custom finish -- a hand applied stain and wax.
