I take a look at my phone, one eye slightly open, and am shocked to see about a hundred texts from Vivi. Without thinking, I open them.

I groan into my pillows as I read Vivi's text.

Madoc's is the last place I want to go to. Not after I found out his secret. The only sane people left there are Oak and Vivi but if they found out what he had done, I am sure they wouldn't give him a chance either.

I still remember my mother's listless dead body covered in blood as it was being carried away. Her fingers had turned pale and her once beautiful warm eyes were now robbed of their colour and soul. All the life in her seem to have vanished into thin air.

I didn't get to see my father that day; his body had already been buried by the murderer, the one who was responsible for ruining my childhood. I didn't even remember their faces anymore.

Madoc and Oriana had been kind enough to take us into their care and I was thankful for that; I truly was but I hadn't known it was because of his guilt.

A I get ready for the horrible night ahead of me, my thoughts drift to Cardan and when he had me in his arms. I can still feel his gaze on mine and his warm hands caressing my back.

No. Stop.

This was Cardan fucking Greenbriar, the most popular jerk in school, the person who has been creating problems for me since day one. He would only take advantage of my weakness. I had to build myself a wall, not of brick but of iron. I had to protect myself. I just had to or else--

I would burn up like a match. Like the whole matchbook...

I get into Vivi's car and I notice a slight shadow of disappointment on her face.

" Heather can't make it, can she?", I say.

" No. it's not that"

"Then, what happened?"

" We kind of had a fight"

"Kind of?", I ask suspiciously.

"It was a stupid fight", she starts the engine as her amber eyes shift to me, "what the HELL?", her eyes bulge out as she yells, " you are wearing that?"

"Yes, I am. And you can't stop me", I say defensively, raising both hands and she starts driving.

No response.

Maybe she is too stressed to even talk.

The ride to Madoc's is silent. Neither of us say a word.

The red brown door opens to reveal a masculine figure, one of his hands holding a cup of coffee--my foster father.

He is still the same, his amber eyes enough to make a man tremble. And I hate him.

I still remember Oriana's shrill voice filling the room as she had said, "why do you keep those children? They are a burden on us!". I was never Oriana's favourite child but...

Nothing could've prepared me for what Madoc said next, his tone filled with rage and guilt as he confessed, "Because I was the one who killed their parents!"

"I was the murderer", he repeated, his voice barely a whisper as he fisted his hair and closed his eyes as if refusing to accept the truth.

That was the last straw; I hadn't waited much longer before moving out.

None of my sisters were aware of the truth for it was enough to break them, enough to leave them completely shattered and I wouldn't ever accept such a thing. No. I wouldn't let my sisters pay the price for a crime someone else committed and I would go to whatever lengths to protect them, even if they didn't need protection, even if we had our differences.

I step into the house and before I can process what is going on, Oak is atop me, his hair tickling my cheeks. I pick him up, his arms around my neck as he giggles, dropping a kiss to my cheek.

For a brief moment, I feel as if all my worries have washed away, as if I was truly... happy.

But that is interrupted by Oriana as I close my eyes shut, fighting the boiling anger inside me.

"Oak, stay away. Don't jump like that. You'll get hurt and I wouldn't like my son to get hurt", she shouted from afar, running towards Oak, pulling him away from me.

Unable to keep my mouth shut, I snap at her, "He is my brother too, you know", before walking towards the kitchen to calm myself down before I throw another tantrum.

My hand rests against the cool black marble of the kitchen slab as I say, "Don't even think about it."

I turn on my heel to lay my eyes upon his wicked face.

"I just wanted to say thank you", every word of his was a deceit as I walked towards him, one step at a time.

" I came here only for Oak and Vivi. So don't get ahead of yourself"

"Jude..."

"Don't bother asking. What you did was unforgiveable"

I strut out of the room, not once turning back to hear what Madoc had to say.

Enough. Let's get this dinner over with.

Just as I take my place on the dinner table, thinking this day couldn't get any worse, Taryn walks in and she is not alone.

Her arm is locked in with Locke's, their fingers entwined but it wasn't them who had left me perplexed: it was the figure behind them.

"Sorry I am late. I brought some friends too", she locks her gaze with mine as she gestures towards Cardan with one hand, "is that okay?"

Unable to contain myself, I throw my utensils on the wooden table and storm out of the house, not caring about the huge thud I make when the door slams behind me.

Cardan POV

I leave dinner soon after Jude does. I shouldn't have listened to Locke; I know better than to trust him.

I find Jude standing outside on her terrace as she stares into the night sky and I can see the moon shining in the mirror of her gorgeous eyes. But it isn't the moon I am captivated by.

It's her.

Her hair is now a light brown and her features enhance as she stands in the moonlight, eyes closed against the wind.

I know it isn't right to follow her to her house, I know it isn't right to be staring at her like that but I just... can't stop.

Gosh.

Jude POV

I am standing on the balcony, breathing in the chill mists, digging them deep into my lungs as I hear footsteps behind me and before I know it, my fist is against Cardan's jaw.

Funny. I don't remember deciding to punch him.

"Aah", he groans in pain, his jaw now turning red, "what the hell is wrong with you? I mean, you are generally a psychopath but... aah...", he exclaims, grabbing his jaw as he turns to look at me.

I should feel sorry. I punched him without reason but...

"Are you laughing?"

"You... you", I try to catch my breath as he comes to stand beside me.

"Quit it, Jude."

I laugh and I laugh and I laugh. I can't stop.

It had been so long, so long since I had laughed like this, since I had actually, genuinely laughed. And it felt amazing. It was euphoria, something that hadn't been in my life for quite some time now.

My hand coils around the cool black railing as I finally stop, though I can't stop smiling.

"Bitch."

"Suck my dick, you asshole."

"Oh, so you have a dick too", he mocks

"Yep. Much bigger than yours", I return with a vulgar gesture.

There's a short pause, a peaceful pause filled with the chirping of birds and the crickets singing their with their euphonious voices until I say, a smile plastered on my face, " I hit you pretty hard, didn't I?"

"Hard? You broke my face!"

"Oh, stop whining."

"That is the third one this week!"

"The first one was because you pushed me into a pool. The second one was because you asked, no, tried to force me into backing down from the fencing competition, in which you failed miserably by the way, and the third..."

"You punched me without reason this time, Jude", he argues, raising one finger.

"You were standing behind me like a creep!"

To that, he shakes his head in question as if trying to prove me wrong.

"Self defense, Cardan", I explain to him, taking a sip of my coffee whilst clutching onto my black cardigan. "By the way, how did you get in?"

"I will not tell you."

Idiot.

It was the first time I had seen her laugh. And that laugh...

I swear I felt my heart skip a beat when she started laughing. If it was possible to play that moment on repeat, I would've.

But love desire is a dangerous thing. It makes one weak.

She hated me and I hated her. And that would never change. She had left dinner because of me and I, too, because of her.

"You really hate me, don't you?", I ask.

"Almost as much as you hate me."

Comparing RWBY and YGO DM: The Handling and Evolution of Themes

Hey! Its been a hot minute since I last posted anything RWBY-related but Im laying in my bed right now and Im sick and bored so I guess we're doing this. Today I will do my best to analyze what I percieve to be the main themes and messages of both of these shows, or more specifically, how theyre handled narratively. Im mostly focusing on that part because, while these series do have similar themes and messaging, they are still a few things in which they are wildly different. And with that, lets start with this essay-post-thing!

1. Theres something we need to adress first

Okay so, before we can really talk about this, theres something I feel the need to clarify here: Neither of these stories was "planned from the beginning".

Now, I dont think a story being planned from the beginning or not nesscessarily makes the story any better or worse by default, however, it is still important to acknowledge because the way the story is planned is going to affect every facet of it. Things are not going to be foreshadowed properly, things are gonna be set up only for nothing to come of it, the story might drastically change directions, characters might act differently, etc, etc.

And, this is bit off-topic but, it's much better to just admit that the story was not planned than trying to pretend that it was. Like, there are a lot of reasons why I tend to be so forgiving towards YGO even though its not very good, but one of them is definitely the fact that, as far as Im aware atleast, the guy who wrote it isnt pretending to have had this big master plan all along and neither is the fandom. With RWBY on the other hand... yeaaaah, its kinda the opposite. From what Ive seen of RWBYs fandom, there seems to be this pretty popular narrative that everything was planned even though it clearly wasnt. Thats pretty bad and honestly lowers my opinion of the writers so much more than if they would just admit to not having a proper plan.

Like, I initially consumed YGO like this: Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters, Yu-Gi-Oh (aka Season 0), like, a quarter of the Yu-Gi-Oh manga (I still havent finished it)

In all three of these we have the character of Yami Yuugi, or just Yami. Broadly speaking, he is an ancient egyptian gamer spirit who lives in a magical puzzle that has not been solved for 3000 years until this highschooler named Yuugi Mutou comes along and solves it, thus setting him free and allowing him to possess Yuugi and have access to the vague magical powers of the puzzle.

In Duel Monsters he's perfectly fine most of time, morally speaking. There is an instance of him almost murdering a guy and its a bit unclear what exactly happens to those he mindcrushes but overall he's very much a pretty good guy. In Season 0 most of what he does is set up these games for bad people, where they will go insane no matter what they do. From how I understand this whole Shadow Game, Penalty Game stuff, if you lose a Shadow Game, you get violent and intense hallucinations and you will always cuz yknow, gamer spirit. But if you try to cheat, which most of the bad people do in this show, you get violent and intense hallucinations as a punishment.

Since the two anime are generally considered two different continuities, its perfectly fine that Yamis characterization is wildly different in both of them. But in the manga both of these characterizations appear, basically one after the other with no real arc or consequences, for that matter. Why is that? Simply put, someone thought it was a good idea to try to turn an episodic, very slice of life-y light-horror manga into a more traditional, more plot-driven battle shounen. From what Ive heard, it was apparently largely because of network interference or something, but the point is, it changed directions incredibly drastically with little planning and everyone knows this and I can understand that for the most part.

In RWBY we have the character of Blake Belladonna, who, in the first 3 volumes/seasons atleast, was this aloof, more toned down loner-type character with a pretty strong sense of justice. She's an in-universe marginilized racial minority and she clearly cares about racial injustice. The way its initially framed makes it seem like she had a very hard life and no stable support system, which is what eventually pushed her to join a Civil Rights group/Terrorist organization (good god, the Faunus subplot is so awful, I could write a whole essay about it but Im already de-railing rn so I'll just save that for later).

Then, in volumes 4-5 it turns out her father is actually like, the mayor or chief of this island-place called Menagerie and she grew up in this big mansion with multiple guards/servants. Oh and also, apparently "space is a commodity" on there, so theres that. She still retains large parts of her personality but she's kinda like, worse somehow I think. I cant really describe it in a meaningful way but I hope you get what Im saying anyway. Then in Volume 6 she confronted her emotional abuser Adam (sorry for not mentioning him sooner but yeah, he was like, her abusive boyfriend, which is something that a lot of people disagree with but I wont really say anything about it either way because I dont really feel any specific way) with her friend, Yang, and ended up killing him.

After all that, she pretty much lost the rest of her personality, as well as her arc about all the Faunus stuff. She just kinda became the meek, generically nice, recovering abuse victim. Why? Well, the actual reason is that they didnt plan out shit and are just kinda flying by the seat of their oversized clown-pants and if they and the fandom just admitted it, I would have less of an issue. I still wouldnt be as forgiving towards RWBY as I am towards YGO because the crux of the issue, for me, is just that I dont particulary like RWBY but also like. Do you really expect me to take MKEK seriously as writers after admitting to not have a timeline because iT wOuLd CaUsE pLoThOlEs?

However, since they want us to believe that everything was planned out from the beginning, the explaination would be.... Idk, they deliberately butchered one of their main characters?? Because.. they hate her?? Maybe????

So yeah, that was quite a detour however, I would like you to keep this mind going forward.

2. Themes of the Early Series'

First, what do mean by 'Early Series' for both of these shows respectively? Well, for YGO that would have to be Season 0 or if youre reading the manga, everything pre-Duelist Kingdom. Basically, the part of the series thats a episodic, very slice of life-y light-horror series.

For RWBY that would be the first three Volumes, also known as the Poser-Era. Back then it was just kinda an action series that took place at Anime Warrior Academy (also known as Beacon) with some pretty bare minimum worldbuilding, character-driven plots and developments but now its more of an epic high-fantasy story with more of an emphasis on plot as opposed to just action.

The themes and messages in Early YGO are kinda vague, very confusing to me and if you were to follow any of it literally that would be pretty bad. For now Im just gonna say the main themes are Friendship and Identity and mostly focus on the Identity aspect.

Now, it took me a little while to figure out RWBYs deal but I think the main themes for Volumes 1-3 are also Friendship and Heroism. Once again, I'll mostly focus on Heroism and touch on Friendship more briefly later.

I dont have much more to add to YGOs themes right now, so I'll briefly go over Heroism in RWBY.

In RWBYs setting there are these man-eating monsters called Grimm that have basically infected the planet. In order to deal with that, they have people called huntsmen and huntresses that kill them and protect people. Theyre trained at special academies like Beacon and go on missions there and stuff like that. Our four main characters, Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang, are training to become huntresses and one day they go on this mission to clean up a grimm infested city block with one of their teachers. Obviously, that takes a long time so they have to camp out in one of the empty houses. Weiss, Blake and Yang cant sleep because theyve been thinking about this question that their teacher asked them when they were fighting grimm: "Why do you want to become a huntress?"

They have a heart to heart and we find out about their motivations; Weiss wants to bring honour back to her family, Blake want to distance herself from the White Fang (that terrorist organization I mentioned earlier) and as an extension from Adam, Yang wants to have a life of adventure. They also talk about why Ruby wants to be a huntress and it turns out that she judt wants to help people. Unlike the others, she has no motivation besides that. We're meant to listen to that and look at her as a sort-of personification of Heroism: kind, but not naive, strong and most of all, selfless. The others on her team are not portayed as bad for not being like Ruby by any means but we are clearly meant to admire her the most out of all of them.

Okay, now comes the part Ive been looking forward to the most:

3. How did these themes evolve in the Modern Series'?

Alright, before we can really delve into the way they evolved in YGO I'll have to give you a brief summary of the character progression. At the start of DM, during the Duelist Kingdom arc, Yami Yuugi is just that; A darker Yuugi. Hes more confident, bolder, his voice is deeper, hes somehow taller, more ruthless, all that good stuff. Notably, he doesnt actually seem more skilled than Yuugi even at the start of this story, but he's still dependent on Yami. Yami on the other hand, has no identity of his own or even hints at one at this point. He's just The Other Yuugi.

Then during the Battle City arc, they find out that Yami was actually a pharao prior to being sealed in the puzzle, he just didnt know because of amnesia, I guess. So now they need to find out his real name and then send him to the afterlife because hes meant to be dead, but not before saving the world from being swallowed by darkness, which is also a thing they have to do now.

Then we finally get to the Memory World arc, where Yami, Yuugi and the rest of the gang astralproject to ancient egypt via puzzle magic. Yami is trying to figure out what the hell is going on and who all these familiar people are, while Yuugi & Co are trying their best to help him. Then some weird shit happens and it turns out that all of that is not just Yamis sealed away memories, but also a giant D&D Shadow Game that will destroy the world if Yami loses. So now theres Pharao!Yami who is still clueless on the metaphorical and literal playing field and Player!Yami, who is kinda controlling himself now? I guess?? Yamis opponent, The Spirit of The Ring, has something similar to that going on where hes both controlling and properly participating in the game. So Player!Yami is now fighting against Player!TSoTR, Pharao!Yami is now fighting against Thief King Bakura (who is like, the human, ancient egyptian version of the Ring Spirit) and Yuugi is now fighting against Yami Bakura (who is like, the human, modern japanese version of the Ring Spirit). Yuugi gets Yamis real name, he and the gang go over to Pharao!Yami and tell him his name, meanwhile Player!Yami is also somehow helping as well and they defeat the Ring Spirit, thus saving the world. Then they travel to modern Egypt, the Ceremonial Duel happens and Yuugi wins, sending Yami to the Afterlife where he can finally rest and that was the series!

I originally wanted to recount the stuff that was going on with the Ring Spirit and his host as well because they parallel eachother, but this summary is already far too long and I think youll get the point without me needing to explain any more.

My point here is, that the story went from being vaguely about Identity, maybe? to being very clearly about Self-Discovery and Learning to Be Independent. I think this is a very good way to evolve the messaging of your story. How does RWBY track on that?

Well, uh... its not great. I will acknowledge that they have tried to introduce new themes and ideas since, even though I wont really be talking about them in this post. But yeah, the whole Heroism thing really regressed.

Like, I didnt explicitly say it when I was explaining grimm earlier, but theyre not going away. The grimm have always been there and people who sign up to become huntsmen and huntresses are effectively signing up for a job that will never truly be done, no matter what they do. Characters like Ruby and even more minor ones like Phyrrah have shown us that that doesnt matter when youre a hero. No life isnt worth saving, no grimm isnt worth killing, no criminal isnt worth arresting. Then, in volume 6 they find out about Salem. Salem is the Big Bad of the show, shes immortal, controls the grimm and is supposed to be very powerful.

What do our heroes do? They give up. Sike! They were just mindcontrolled by monsters or some shit, of course they didnt give up their mission (which is to bring an Important Macguffin to a city called Atlas, sorry I didnt mention it)!

But then they arrive in Atlas (which is llike, a city thats floating over another city called Mantle) and yknow, they do some plot stuff thats not really important right now until the city gets invaded by Salem and this big grimm army she has.

What do our heroes do? Well, Ruby, Weiss, Blake and some side characters are chilling, drinking tea in a mansion and Yang and the B Team were actually trying to do something, but even those efforts seem incredibly minimal.

Oh wait, I also forgot to mention that Ironwood (a fairly minor, vaguely antagonistic character up until now) wanted to lift Atlas even higher to save Atleasian civilians from danger while leaving Mantle vulnerable to Salems invasion.

What would be the most heroic thing to do?

A) Let Ironwood lift Atlas, get as much support as they can down to Mantle and save as many Mantle civilians as they can from the invasion

B) Prevent Ironwood from lifting Atlas but then split up in order to protect both Atlas and Mantle civilians

C) Prevent Ironwood from lifting Atlas and then dont do anything else

Congrats! If you choose C, you think exactly like the writers!

And I just

This is so mindboggling to me, I feel like I shouldnt even have explain how this is bad. And like, it wouldve been so easy to actually make them seem herokc through their actions, to make it seem like they did try but no.

I have never seen a central theme be this botched, how in the world did they do that? Why did they think it was a good idea for Ruby "The Embodiment of Heroism" Rose to sit in a mansion doing nothing, no planning, no organizing just ..... God, how are they this bad? Like, this doesnt even have anything to do with it being planned in any way, this is just straight up incompetence

4. Very briefly touching on friendship

The friendship is awful and its not solely because they all have the same opinions. They barely interact with eachother outside their designated pairs which leads to it all feeling incredibly hollow. Theyre also practically indistingushable from one another now, which is a shame because it wasnt always like that. Like, I dont think the characters were that well-developed in earlier volumes but they were very well-characterized. But now we've gotten to a point where you can literally copy and paste one characters dialogue onto another and literally nothing changes, it really sucks.

5. Some closing words

Damn, this took way longer than I thought it would and now Im pretty exhausted. I have no idea how yall always write these but props to you! I feel like this ended up a bit rambly but overall, Im pretty proud.

Please let me know what you think of the points I brought up! Id also really appreciate some tips on how to get better at these longer posts because I am planning on writing more in the future (not the near future, probably but yknow).

Dear Kwami, this took at least a week to write and I don’t know why but here it finally is. Also, I have no explanation for some of the ways Adrien acts in this lol.

Marinette went down to the living room, school bag in hand.

“Good morning, sweetie.” Sabine smiled.

“Good morning, Maman. Papa’s already down in the bakery?” Marinette kissed her cheek.

“He is.” Sabine nodded. “How’s Adrien?”

“Um, okay from what I last heard.” Marinette blushed.

Sabine nodded again, “You should bring him over for lunch.”

“I… I’ll tell him you’ve invited him to join us for lunch.” Marinette said, a bit wary of her maman. She canted her head, “Can I grab a couple of pastries for breakfast?”

“Of course.” Sabine said.

“Thanks Maman, I’ll see you at lunch.” Marinette gave her another cheek peck and went to grab the pastries.

Marinette jogged up the stairs of the school. She’d actually made good time this morning. She ducked into the locker room and sorted the books she’d need for the day.

“Oh, good morning, Mari.” Adrien greeted as he headed to his locker.

“Wow I got here before you? I must be super early.” Marinette smiled, “And good morning, Adrien.”

“Well, super early for you maybe.” Adrien teased.

“Well that’s quite a way to talk to your fiancée, Adrien.” Marinette had a hand on her heart, unable to suppress her laughter.

Adrien chuckled, “You’re right, you’re right, my sincerest apologies, Mari.”

“Oh, well, if you’re sincere.” She giggled and closed her locker.

They headed into the courtyard and to a bench. Marinette pulled out the pastry box as they sat and opened it for him. Adrien’s entire face lit up as he took one.

“You’re the best, Mari.” Adrien beamed.

“I didn’t even make them.” Marinette shook her head.

“Doesn’t make it any less true.” Adrien shrugged before taking a bite. He hummed in delight.

She chuckled and took one for herself. They sat and ate in comforting silence.

“Thank you.” Adrien said after he’d finished eating. He rubbed the back of his neck, his other hand drumming on his thigh.

“Adrien?” Marinette asked.

“Yeah?” Adrien looked over.

“What’s wrong?” She frowned.

“O-oh, um, nothing’s wrong per se.” Adrien looked away, pink dusting his cheeks. He shifted and pulled something from his bag, “So, I, uh, I wasn’t sure if- well, I’m honestly not sure how long Father’s going to keep this, uh, arrangement - but I mean, if it does keep, I’m not, uh, I wasn’t sure if this is something we should do or you would want and- just, I got this after we talked yesterday.”

Marinette blinked as a velvet ring box was placed in her hands. She stared at it, numb shock enveloping her. Cuz there was no way this was what she thought it was.

After a long awkward pause, she opened the box with trembling fingers. Resting gently inside was a beautiful ring. The band was silver and shaped like a branch with pink sapphire flower buds. The centerpiece of the ring was a blooming sakura of soft pink porcelain.

Marinette’s breath caught in her throat. She could feel tears trying to form in her eyes.

“I, um, I got a necklace too in case you’d rather wear it that way. If you want it, I mean. If not, I totally understand and that’s totally okay. I just figured you should have one if you want one, y'know?” Adrien rambled, “And it’s the proper thing to do, I guess. Not that that’s why I bought it. I mean, not completely. Tradition did have a role in that, I guess-”

Marinette pulled him into a tight hug, “It’s beautiful, thank you.”

“O-of course.” Adrien managed, hugging her back.

Marinette broke the hug reluctantly and looked at the ring with a small frown, “If I wear it like a ring, people are probably gonna notice.”

Adrien pulled out another box, this one containing a silver necklace chain. Marinette looked at it for a long moment.

“Y'know what?” Marinette slipped the ring onto her left ring finger, the weight a foreign feeling. “It’s too beautiful not to show off.”

“It fits okay?” Adrien asked.

Marinette slipped the ring off easily enough and then back on, “Perfectly.”

“Good.” Adrien smiled in relief. His smile returned to nervousness, “Oh, uh, Alya and Nino are here.”

“Oh… this’ll be interesting.” Marinette muttered, pulling her arms in tighter to her body.

Alya spotted them and walked toward them, Nino following easily behind.

“Hi Alya, hi Nino.” Marinette said with her best innocent smile.

“Girl, what happened? You just dropped off the planet this weekend.” Alya frowned worriedly.

“Hey Nino.” Adrien greeted.

“Hey dude, you doing okay?” Nino asked.

Marinette forced her focus back to Alya, “Oh, well, I got some kinda surprising news this weekend that took some time to process. Though, honestly, I might still be in shock a bit.”

Alya’s worried look deepened.

“It’s nothing bad!” Marinette waved her hands to try to assuage Alya’s fears, laughing a bit more nervously than she’d like, “Just surprising and random, I promise!”

“Hey Marinette, what’s up with the new ring?” Nino asked.

Marinette and Adrien startled. They exchanged a look, apparently neither had thought that Nino’d be the one to bring it up.

Almost simultaneously, they blurted, “We’re engaged!”

“Y-you’re-? Excuse me!?” Alya squeaked.

“Mari and I are, uh, engaged. Betrothed. Affianced. Intended.” Adrien replied, looking like he still wasn’t sure this wasn’t just a really weird, really long dream. He shrunk into the bench, “It was arranged without our say.”

“Between Maman and Gabriel, apparently. They sprung it on us.” Marinette frowned, “I’ve been trying to wrap my head around it all weekend.”

Adrien nodded his agreement in that. Nino and Alya stared at them, shocked.

“So, you're… you’re not, um, ex-expecting, right?” Alya asked.

Marinette stood abruptly at that, voice pitched higher from distress, “Alya! Of course not! I’ve only ever kissed one boy and it wasn’t even Adrien!”

Adrien wisely decided not to bring up the Statue Incident and the fact that, technically, their lips had met. Making his only remembered first kiss be the one with Marinette and the irreversible awkwardness. Which was simply unfair in all senses of the word.

“You’ve kissed Luka?” Alya frowned.

Marinette hesitated, her cheeks turning pink, and she fiddled with the hem of her jacket, “N-no. Not with Luka. Not that it’s even important… Given the circumstances…”

“Then who the he-” Alya began.

“It’s really not important, okay?! Just- just drop it, please.” Marinette had her eyes squeezed shut and her fists were clenched.

“Okay…” Alya breathed. She turned a frown on Adrien, “So did you get her the ring or was that arranged without your inputs too?”

Adrien actually blushed, “No, I got it for Mari.”

Alya’s eyes narrowed as she tried to dissect Adrien using only her eyes. Adrien looked away, rubbing the back of his neck.

“But hey, the ring is really cool and definitely fits Marinette’s style, so good job, bro.” Nino held his fist out to his friend with a grin.

Adrien sent him a grateful, if shy, smile and fist bumped, “Um, thank you.”

“So, is the whole class going to be told?” Alya asked.

“If they ask.” Marinette shrugged, twisting the ring, “I don’t intend to actively paint a bigger target on my back. Especially when it comes to Lila.”

“If she dares try to hurt or threaten you again, let me know, Mari.” There was a quiet fury in Adrien’s eyes as he stood before his betrothed.

Marinette blinked, “But-”

“I’d already warned her because of Oni-Chan and then she got you expelled and akumatized. I’m not going to let that happen again.” Adrien said, fists clenched.

The other three stared at him in surprise. None of them knew how to respond to Adrien’s angry determination.

The bell rang.

Adrien grabbed his bag, then Mari’s and held it out to her, “Your bag, Mari.”

“Thank you.” Marinette took it.

“Y'know Sunshine, you’re kinda scary when you’re mad.” Alya frowned.

“Well, I hope that’s enough to persuade Lila to drop it.” Adrien sighed.

Marinette worried her lip but said nothing. Adrien’s anger was justified but it still concerned her.

They walked up to their classroom as a group, more of their classmates falling in with them.

“Oh right. Adrien?” Marinette turned to him.

“Yeah P- Mari?” Adrien asked.

“Maman is extending you an invitation to lunch with us at the bakery.” Marinette relayed. Though her brow was a little scrunched.

Adrien paled a little but smiled, “Thank you. Uh, I’ll ask Nathalie.”

“Okay.” Marinette nodded.

They settled into their seats as they filed in. Alya sent Marinette a teasing, questioning smirk. Marinette rolled her eyes and started pulling out her books.

Marinette’s motion stopped as a realization hit. Oh. Oh Kwami, she was going to have to tell Cat Noir.

Marinette’s face burned as she imagined that conversation and having to answer his innocent and curious questions. She buried her face in her hands with a noise of frustration. Alya snickered. Marinette turned to shush her.

Except… Adrien growled. Actually growled.

Marinette snapped her attention to him. Adrien was hunched over his bag. She couldn’t see his expression from here but Nino’s was one of confusion and shock.

“Uh, dude?” Nino asked.

Adrien’s head jolt up and over to his friend, “Yeah?”

“Are you okay?” Nino frowned.

There was a pause.

“Yeah, why?” Adrien chanted his head.

“Uh, cuz you kinda just, er, growled.” Nino replied.

“O-oh, did I?” Adrien’s right hand twisted around his left wrist, his eyes wide.

Marinette’s heart twisted painfully. She offered her hand as she softly said, “Hey.”

The attention turned to her and Adrien’s eyes widened more. Marinette left her hand offered, not intruding on his space but still there if he decided to take it.

“Well of course you growled, you said you were going to watch that big cats documentary last night. ‘Lions, and Tigers and Cougars, Oh My!’, right?” Marinette said.

“Girl, what on earth are you talking about?” Alya frowned.

“A documentary on big cats, such as lions and tigers.” Marinette frowned, “Did I not just say that?”

“Yeah, but why would that make Adrien growl?” Alya crossed her arms.

“Clearly you haven’t seen it.” Marinette scoffed. At some point, Adrien had taken her hand, but she wasn’t going to make a thing about it. Marinette shook her head, “Honestly, Alya, it’s that immersive.”

“Oh hey Adrien.” Lila greeted with a shark’s smile.

“Lila.” Adrien acknowledged, voice icy and sharp.

“Did you hear? We have a photoshoot tomorrow.” Lila smiled wider only to hide her wince.

“As Nathalie didn’t mention that this morning, perhaps you’re mistaken.” Adrien smiled.

“Or maybe your condition is acting up again.” Marinette couldn’t help but suggest helpfully. She smiled innocently when Lila glared at her.

“I’d suggest you go to your seat, Lila.” Adrien’s voice was hard.

Lila huffed and stormed up the stairs.

“I’m so glad you’re on our side, dude.” Nino breathed.

“How do you manage to be so terrifying all of a sudden, Sunshine?” Alya asked.

Adrien shrugged, “I’m just done with being everyone’s pawn in a game that hurts my friends.”

“That’s fair.” Alya nodded.

Adrien looked at Marinette, then, with an indescribable expression. She squeezed his hand. He smiled softly.

Bio:

Sebastian knew Hunter throughout high school, where they became pretty good friends. Sebastian and Hunter were practically inseparable after they figured out their differences and Sebastian gave up his position for captain to make him happy. Of course, Sebastian told himself it was because Hunter was a better fit, but he knew that wasn’t completely true. Sebastian never told anyone, not even Hunter, it was because he wanted a better chance to get with him.

            Sebastian had the biggest crush on Hunter throughout high school and only did it get worse when they became roommates. Of course, Sebastian made sure there was no way Hunter could know a thing. So thus began the parade of men Sebastian brought in and out of their room. Sebastian probably slept with over one hundred guys in the time he and Hunter roomed together, of course, all in his room and occasionally in Hunter’s bed, all with the hopes of Hunter walking in a becoming jealous, which never really worked.

            Sebastian spent most of his time in high school perfecting his singing and was planning on going to school with Hunter for a career in music but Sebastian’s transcripts weren’t nearly as good as Hunter’s. Apparently his two years of whoring  around Westerville to make his best friend jealous had an effect on his grades. So Sebastian settled for the local college for a degree in music and Hunter went off to pursue his dreams elsewhere. Sebastian and Hunter kept in touch for a while until their friendship faded away and they stopped talking for no real reason. Sebastian was heartbroken at the loss of his best friend and the man he believed to be “the one” but he just never knew what to say to Hunter; especially when he didn’t know what Hunter would say to him. Sebastian continued his promiscuous lifestyle and soon began to forget about the reason he started sleeping around and began to do it because he was good at it and he liked it.

After a semester at the local college, Sebastian was sure music was not for him. Sebastian was distracting himself from doing his homework one night when he discovered the new Fire Science program starting at his college. Knowing he couldn’t imagine working in the music industry for the rest of his life, Sebastian applied for the Fire Science program. His grades were atrocious, and his parents were pretty pissed when the found out what Sebastian had been doing for the last two and a half years of his life, “going into burning buildings, putting out fires in a dirty yellow coat is disgusting and dangerous,” His mother complained. His father rolled his eyes and laughed, “Son, you’re a slut and disgrace, and you’re not going to be a fire fighter. Just drop out and I’ll get you’re a job at my company, maybe you can get your mess of a life together.” His parents were right. Obviously a 1.9 GPA wasn’t going to get Sebastian into fire school. Sebastian was not accepted into the fire program but he wasn’t going to give up. Sebastian moved out of his parent’s house, causing his father to cut him off completely. He took a semester and the summer off school and got a full time job. Sebastian worked his ass off until he could afford another year of college. He had no idea what he would do to pay for the second year of his two-year program, but he was going to get into the program. He took the entrance exam, since he didn’t qualify with his grades, and passed with flying colors. So in the fall, Sebastian started the fire science program. And he loved it. Sebastian even earned a full ride scholarship for the second year of the program. His parents were proud of him finally, but Sebastian rolled his eyes and laughed. They weren’t invited to his graduation ceremony.

Sebastian began his career as a firefighter with a low-paying, part-time job in the Westerville department. It was hard work and most of the time he was sent to wash the fire trucks or fetch food for the full-timers. For the first full year of his first job, Sebastian hadn’t stepped foot in a burning building and was considering quitting. The day Sebastian was sent to work on engine 3, the truck that notoriously broke down nearly every time it was taken out, he had had enough. Sebastian dropped his wrench on the ground and grumbled. Fuck this job, he didn’t work his ass off to be the valedictorian of his graduating class to work on a broken truck. Suddenly, the lights flashed and the bells rang. Everyone sprang up and rushed to put on their gear. A fire at the local Wal-Mart, the biggest one they’ve had all year. Sebastian stayed put, like always, he knew he wouldn’t be allowed to go.

“Smythe, get your ass moving!” He heard his boss yell and Sebastian mouth dropped open in shock. He sat for about two seconds before realizing it; He was finally going to get to do what he worked so hard for! Sebastian geared up faster than he’d ever had in practice and was even on the truck before some of his fellow firefighters. The fire was huge, most of the store had been burned to a crisp before they’d finished and at least two people had died and five had gone to the emergency room. By the end, Sebastian was spent and covered in ash and soot, but the smile couldn’t leave his face, despite the deaths and injuries. His boss clapped him on the shoulder and said he’d done well. Sebastian never had to sit out another fire again.

Hunter visited that summer and Sebastian was sitting in the lounge at the station when his dad called. Hunter had stopped by the house looking for Sebastian, who hadn’t lived there for the past three years. Sebastian sighed, rubbed his eyes, and told him to send him to his apartment; he was just leaving the station. When he arrived at his apartment, he noticed a taller, leaner, Hunter leaning against the door and Sebastian practically stopped breathing. “Hunt?” He breathed, dropping his duffel on the ground. Hunter’s eyes locked onto Sebastian and before he knew it, Hunter had pushed him against the door to his apartment, pressing their lips passionately together. Sebastian stumbled to unlock the door, both men slipping inside and the rest of the night, is history.

Sebastian couldn’t let Hunter slip away again, so just 10 months later, he proposed; another night in their history book. And their wedding day was pretty amazing too. Sebastian’s parents had since apologized for the way they treated their son, and had been nothing but supportive of Sebastian and Hunter’s marriage, and their decision to have children.

But, ever since that fateful night Hunter had came back, Sebastian had been fighting an uphill battle with Hunter’s father. He hated Sebastian and no matter what he did, his father made those comments Hunter wouldn’t believe if Sebastian told him. So he kept his pure hatred of his husband’s father to himself, wishing he could get some support from his husband.

The day Sebastian had ended up in the hospital from second degree burns and smoke inhalation was the day Hunter’s father came to him with a…proposition, “divorce my son. I’ve got about 2 million dollars saved up, if you’d move to back to Ohio and - ” The older Clarington wasn’t able to finish his thought as Sebastian, hooked up to a breathing machine and two of his limbs wrapped in bandages, lunged at the old fucker, nearly knocking Hunter’s father, and himself, out in his rage. When the nurse found Hunter straddling the older man, attempting to punch his lights out, Sebastian was dragged back into his bed and his husband was called. Sebastian was required to stay in the hospital longer, for both his blisters that were torn open in the altercation, and a psych evaluation. Neither man told Hunter what had happened; the only thing Hunter knew was that Sebastian attacked his father and clearly was not happy with his husband. Two weeks after the event, Sebastian still has no idea how to tell the love of his life that his father wants to pay him off to divorce him.

My guy and I pulled out of the dealership lot and literally about a minute down the road we were hit by a girl in a car who says she didn't see us. I just had to bring my car to the shop for a repair. They ended up needing to keep it. Now a rental was covered under the warranty. So at least the rental was covered. But the guy had me signing off on insurance and what not. I guess the insurance on my car would cover the rental if I had an accident. But they would take from my cars deductible. So I basically signed off on a Collision Damage Waiver and also personal accident insurance. I did decline supplemental liability insurance though. Should the warranty be covering these fees or was this an extra that I got talked into? Because if the warranty covers the rental they aren't making anything. My understanding is it could be better because I am covered under their insurance if I have an accident and it wouldn't come off my own cars deductible? Kind of new to this and probably wouldn't have been worth trying to argue it after the fact that I signed off on stuff.So if I use this car for like 3 days I'm in it for like $60 in insurance. Also does anyone know how this buying the tank of gas works? I understood it as if I use so much then I pay there price of $5.60 a gallon.
