A #JacksonStateUniversity student invention will help against lead problems in drinking water. Lamonte Pierce invented and patented a straw that he says filters lead and other contaminants from drinking water. Pierce created the #Cleanstraww because he grew tired of getting boil-water alerts from the city of #JacksonMississippi. “Every time I look around, there is a boil-water alert. Matter of fact, when I woke up (Friday) morning to take a shower, the water was coming out brown — literally muddy, sludge brown,” Pierce told ABC 16. “Imagine having to drink something like that. You shouldn’t have to go out and buy water when you have it flowing through your house.” #Walmart has offered Pierce a vendor contract to supply 4,000 stores with his filtration straws. Pierce hasn’t accepted the offer yet but hopes to sell his Cleanstraww in major stores soon. Pierce who is currently a graduate student and earned his bachelor’s degree in industrial technology from #JacksonState in 2017 and currently works full-time in the IT department at Jackson Public Schools as a network analyst. #LamontePierce partnered with #AndrewWillis, a fellow JSU graduate to develop the invention as part of a 3D-printing challenge at a #cyberlearning summit on the campus according to #JacksonFreePress. CTP
Stands for "Composite Theoretical Performance."  CTP is used to measure the performance of computer processors.  The values returned by CTP calculations are used for benchmarking purposes, which compare the performance of different processors.  For example, Intel and AMD use CTP calculations to measure how many millions of theoretical operations per second (MTOPS) their processors can perform.  An Intel Pentium M 770, which runs at 2.13 GHz, has a CTP of 7100 MTOPs, while an AMD Opteron 146, which runs at 2.0 GHz, has a CTP of 7168 MTOPS.As seen in the example above, faster processor speeds do not always result in a higher CTP.  Other considerations, such as the processor's architecture and the speed of the frontside bus also affect the overall performance.  CTP is useful for comparing different brands of processors, as well as comparing different models of processors made by the same company.  With dual and quad processors becoming more prevalent, CTP is now also being used to measure the performance increase when multiple processors are used together.
CTP also stands for "Computer to Plate."  This is a process where printing plates are made without using costly film.  Instead, the images are sent directly to the plate from the computer.

NSF funded report focuses on classroom technology
A new report co-authored by a University of Illinois at Chicago computer and learning scientist examines the use of technology in classrooms through efforts supported by the National Science Foundation.
Organized by The Center for Innovative Research in Cyberlearning, or CIRCL, the report highlights examples of the work that the cyberlearning community is engaged in to integrate the latest innovations in learning science and computer science into new research designs and methods.
Tom Moher, UIC associate professor of computer science and learning sciences, is one of 22 members of the U.S. cyberlearning community who wrote the report, “The Cyberlearning Community Report: The State of Cyberlearning and the Future of Learning With Technology,” which features six design themes emerging across multiple NSF-funded cyberlearning projects taking place in classrooms from pre-K-12 through post-secondary levels.
Among the questions tackled in the report are:
How students can use their bodies and minds to learn what will be important in the 21st century, such as collaboration, scientific argumentation, mathematical reasoning, computational thinking, creative expression, design thinking, and civic engagement?
What advances in computation and technology are needed to design, develop, and analyze innovative learning experiences?
How can learning with technology expand access, equity, and depth of learning across diverse people, institutions, and settings?
Moher, whose research has included work with Chicago and suburban elementary and middle schools, started on the project as a faculty member in the College of Engineering’s computer science department and later continued as an emeritus faculty member in the Learning Sciences Research Institute in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Moher coauthored a section of the report, “Classrooms as Digital Performance Spaces,”  with Noel Enyedy of UCLA. The section featured research that took place at UIC under several NSF grants on which Moher served as principal investigator.
“That section focuses on the idea of classrooms as ‘instrumented’ spaces in which children’s physical movements and use of technologies distributed around the room serve as inputs to STEM simulations, as ways to collectively build knowledge, and data sources for students’ interests and development of skill in scientific practices,” said Moher, adding that research at UIC around this work stretches back to 2003.
This is the first “report to the community” around NSF’s investment in learning technologies, according to Moher.

Resource: CIRCL of Cyberlearning Life
As of summer 2017, the Center for Innovative Research in Cyberlearning (CIRCL), which is part of the National Science Foundation, had awarded 279 research grants, most of which are exploring aspects of “cyberlearning.”
CIRCL’s October 2017 report on the designs, ideas and progress in the cyberlearning community pulled together the work of 22 authors. Called “Cyberlearning Community Report: The State of Cyberlearning and the Future of Learning with Technology,” it delves into six design themes emerging across NSF-funded cyberlearning projects:
Community Mapping: Moving and Discovering across Contexts
Expressive Construction: Enabling Learners to Represent Powerful Ideas
Classrooms as Digital Performance Spaces
Virtual Peers and Coaches: Social and Cognitive Support for Learning
Remote Scientific Labs: Authenticity at Distance
Enhancing Collaboration and Learning through Touch Screen Interface.
The authors see these as an increased emphasis on context, mobility, physicality, agency, authenticity and social learning. And they see how researchers are adjusting or changing study methods to measure what the shifts mean.
CIRCL offers an additional resource in its primers—brief summaries of key cyberlearning topics, with rich collections of resources. For instance, check out this Primer on Learning Sciences, written by Jeremy Roschelle (now with Digital Promise) and others.

People Make People -  Bryan Bruce.
People Make People –  Bryan Bruce.
Teaching is more than instruction. It’s people making. One of the biggest mistakes we could make in preparing our children for the future is to think that teachers can be replaced by computers.
Why? Because that would be to reduce the job description of a teacher to that of an instructor  – which would take us back to the 19th Century when teachers tried to fill their students up with…
