FaOI 2023 Makuhari Day 1 - Impressions
The first show day of Fantasy on Ice 2023 has come to an end. Besides me having a terrible headache throughout most of the day, it was a pretty good start to the A tour - chaotic, scary and... dangerous (from multiple points of view).
Within the first hour of the show*, there was nothing - no photos from the media, no reports from the audience in the venue, no news reporting on anything... just us, international Fanyus, camping on Twitter, waiting for someone to say something. Personally, I used that time to close my eyes and try to make the headache go away (yeah, no such luck).
Then the breaktime came and Japanese people were reporting left and right about Yuzu doing something in the OP, but no one knew quiet exactly what - apparently the usual FaOI choreo changed a bit because the number of skaters is less, so Yuzu blended in with the skaters before his name was called out - the trademark 4T happened, although wobbly. Not that it matters.
At this point, it's not really relevant what HAPPENED in the OP, but what was shown. Arms, bare arms, but those were sort of overshadowed by the 'interesting' design of the OP costume. I'm not going to judge it too hard because I haven't seen it in motion yet, so I'll have to wait for Sunday for that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the flood of reports (translation thread of Japanese live reports), there was a pause and then... way before the show should've ended, more reports started flooding. This time not about the show itself, but about the earthquake that happened. A 6.2 magnitude earthquake with the epicenter in Chiba happened while the show was in full swing and, for safety reasons, the performances were suspended for a while. The staff made sure the audience was seated and not panicking, confirmation of no tsunami danger came, and the staff ran a safety check of the venue. The earthquake was bad enough for the rods holding the lights to shake, so it was extremely important to make sure everything was in order and properly fixed.
Maybe 15 minutes later, the show resumed. And then came the anxiety because we just knew Yuzu was close if not already performing his new program. And since we knew that the opening 4T was messed up, we also thought that a mad combo must happen at the end. It just had to.
Once the show ended (and my headache was still as strong as ever), more reports started coming in - and Yuzu's program turned out to be a performance to IF by DA PUMP. The costume was still a mystery, though, the best description being something like "white open jacket, black and white sleeves, vest, chains". It obviously sounded like a very cool J-rock outfit. And boy, oh boy, THAT did not disappoint.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for the finale, I really don't remember anything about it from the reports because the costume got my entire attention. What I can remember is that no report came about any unhinged jump combination done by Yuzu.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was supposed to be me reflecting on what I've learnt about the show, not summarizing it, but it is what it is. So about the actual impressions:
-> FaOI's costume designer for sure has a knack of finding ways to make the most questionable costumes look decent if not good on Yuzu. Seriously, though, what's the point of tops at this point, since they barely hold any material?
-> there isn't FaOI Makuhari if an earthquake doesn't happen (2019, 2022 specifically). I sure was scared to learn about the earthquake. The people in the venue were shaken, and I can only imagine what Yuzu and the skaters must've felt. Once the danger had passed, I'm sure they gave their 100% in the finale to conclude the show on a high note
-> I'm not fond of the music for Yuzu's program, but I wasn't fond of Real Face and Raison either, but they grew on me (especially Raison), so it might happen again this year, too
-> camping on twitter is nerve-wracking, there's no news then there's too many news in an unknown language, and the automatic translation sometimes messes up so bad you can't tell anything but "Yuzu, teeth, stomach" - I still have no clue what that meant
-> but the gratification comes in the flood of photos from the media and saving AS MANY AS POSSIBLE without saving doubles (or triple, quadruple, quintuple copies)... I think I made a decent job
I don't really have a platform where I could share all the photos I've saved (they are quite a lot), but I posted some OP, EX, and Finale photos as a way of 'summarizing' the show through them
*The photos were released about 1h after the show, though

Exploring Vietnam: Day 1 in Ancient Town of Hoi An, Vietnam
Tumblr media
Vietnam - 7 days, 4 cities, 1 country. Vietnam is known from its coffees and noodles soups which we couldn’t miss during our trip there.
For Vietnam, we decided to visit Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue, and Hanoi. It was a series of transfers either from plane to plane or car to train.
Vietnam blog, same as the first travel blogs, will be divided into series of posts. If you would like to know our itineraries, expenses, and some more information, you may read my blog and hope it helps you planning your trip to Vietnam. Detailed expenses and itinerary will be at the end of each post.
Also, you may also watch my vlogs at the end of each post as some information may be on the video and not in my blog and vice versa. 😊
DAY 1.1 JULY 21, 2019
PHILIPPINE AIRLINES: MANILA >> HANOI
Tumblr media
July 21, 2019 - our flight from Manila to Hanoi, Vietnam was at 10:25pm with almost a 3-hour travel time via Philippine Airlines. Our plane fare for a roundtrip was US$ 144.60(PHP 7,519.2) each that includes 25kg of baggage allowance and an inflight meal.
There is a time difference of an hour between Manila and Hanoi.
Tumblr media
Meals are always included with PAL. For my meal in the plane, I got Chicken with Java Rice, Macaroni Salad, Dried Pineapple, Butter, and Bread. The chicken was actually good and was made by Aristocrat. 😋
Tumblr media
To our surprise, there was an extra dessert! 😍 We were given Avocado Ice Cream. Who doesn’t like ice cream, right?
DAY 1.2 JULY 22, 2019
Tumblr media
We arrived at Hanoi, Vietnam at around 12:45am in Terminal 2 and stayed at terminal for a few hours before transferring to Terminal 1 for our next flight to Da Nang, Vietnam.
There were no shuttle service for terminal transfers during that time since it was in the early morning that’s why we booked a Grab instead. We paid for Grab with VND 50,000 (PHP 110) per car plus a toll fee of VND 15,000 (PHP 33.00) upon entry to terminal 1 for each car. We booked 2 separate cars since no one’s accepting our booking for the bigger cars/vans.
VIETNAM AIRLINES: HANOI >> DA NANG
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From Hanoi, now boarding to go to Da Nang.
➖ ➖ ➖ ➖ ➖
DA NANG, VIETNAM
We claimed our sim card via Klook in Da Nang International Airport. Originally we are planning to get the unlimited data sim card at Hanoi International Airport, however, the operating hours of the booth conflicts with our arrival time.
Each sim card availed via Klook had 7GB worth of data and is good for 30 days. One sim card costs Php282. For the internet speed, it was actually good enough for watching YouTube smoothly, and fast enough to send and upload of photos.
LE HOUSE BOUTIQUE HOTEL, DA NANG, VIETNAM
Tumblr media
Straight from Da Nang airport, we booked a Grab and went to our hotel, Le House Boutique Hotel.
Tumblr media
It was so early for our check-in that we decided to leave our luggage, have breakfast, and go to Hoi An and go back in the late afternoon
We booked our room in Le House Boutique Hotel via Agoda that costs us a total of PHP 4,143 which includes a buffet breakfast for all of us. Our room was located at the topmost, the penthouse. It was a 3-bedroom apartment with each room, having its own shower and toilet area. Also, the apartment has a common area such as: living room, kitchen, dining area, and a balcony. You may check my room tour on my vlog at the end of this post.
KA CONG CAFE
Tumblr media
We decided to have our breakfast to the cafe beside our hotel, Ka Cong Cafe.
Tumblr media
I ordered their Boiled Pork with Steamed Rice that costs VND 80,000 (PHP 176). The meal was exactly what you will get as the name of the food says. It looks plain in a glance but was actually good especially when you eat the pork with their sauce.
Tumblr media
Of course when in Vietnam, one must try all the coffee as possible. I tried their Sai Gon Coffee with Milk that costs VND 29,000 (PHP 63.80). The coffee was so amazing! It was a little strong but creamy!
➖ ➖ ➖ ➖ ➖
HOI AN, VIETNAM
KHONG GIAN XANH
Tumblr media
Menu of Khong Gian Xanh
Tumblr media
Cao Lau on the left for VND 35,000 and Chicken Rice on the right for VND 35,000 too.
Tumblr media
I ordered Cao Lau and the taste was amazing! The Cao Lau is Hoi An’s specialty dish. It’s a noodle soup and the water used in the dish must be from the nearby well.
I couldn’t describe what taste resembles to it since the Cao Lau has a very unique taste. It was one of a kind and a must try when vising Hoi An.
Beside the Cao Lau, I also ordered a refreshing drink of Lemon Juice for VND 20,000 and a large bottled water for VND 15,000.
Tumblr media
After having our lunch, we went to nearest ticket booth for the entrance to the museums, old houses, etc. within the Ancient Town in Hoi An. A ticket costs VND 120,000/each which included entrance to 5 places.
Tumblr media
Hoi An is known for its lanterns hanging everywhere in the ancient town. The lanterns were used before as to light up their homes and since of its beautiful designs, it was also used as decorations.
MUSEUM OF FOLKORE IN HOI AN
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The museum includes preserved items used in their daily lives in the past. Artifacts displayed in the museum were at least 100+ years old.
Tumblr media
OLD HOUSE OF QUAN THANG
Tumblr media
The Qua Thang shop-house is one of the oldest houses in Hoi An. It is built by a Chinese merchant in the late 17th century.
Tumblr media
TRAN FAMILY CHAPEL
Tumblr media
The Tran Family Chapel was built as a home and a chapel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were a little disappointed for both the Old House of Quan Thang and the Tran Family Chapel. We were expecting really old houses with the furniture, and living areas still in their places. Though there were furniture still in their homes, however, bigger sections of the houses were made into shops. Some were even “irritated” that we didn’t buy anything from them.
The two houses were a “nice to see” places however, if given another chance, I would choose the other museums instead.
MADAM KHANH - BANH MI QUEEN
Tumblr media
Tried the famous Madam Khanh Banh Mi! While eating, we saw that there were a lot of Grab Food orders for this place - that surely tells that it’s the best Banh Mi.
Since we were still quite full from the Cao Lau, we shared a Banh Mi for two people. We ordered the Mixed Banh Mi which contains vegetables, pork, ham, eggs, egg sauce, papaya, and cucumber. It was the actually the best Banh Mi I’ve tasted and would love to go back to Hoi An for the Madam Khanh’s Bang Mi! One order costs VND 20,000 (PHP44).
HOI AN MUSEUM
Tumblr media
Next that we visited was the Hoi An Museum. The whole museum has 4 floors that displays all the relics and some old photos in Hoi An.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After visiting the museum, we decided to explore more of Hoi An.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s the area where tourists floats little lanterns in water. (Which we decided not to do it since it may contribute to more pollution and deforestation since the lanterns were made from papers.)
Tumblr media
JAPANESE COVERED BRIDGE
Tumblr media
Visited the Japanese Covered Bridge but didn’t go inside since it was crowded.
HAINAN ASSEMBLY HALL
Tumblr media
Last ticket was for Hainan Assembly hall. We didn’t know where to spend our last ticket and our friend wants to visit with anything that has dragons in it, thus, our last ticket was for Hainan Assembly hall.
Overall, Hoi An is a good place to visit to experience and taste their specialty dishes. It is place for people who loves lanterns, and collects antics.
If you want to see the other parts for my travel vlog in Vietnam, please do watch the video below:

Auf Abschiedstournee: Mirja Boes in Holzminden
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mirja Boes kommt mit den Honkey Donkeys nach Holzminden | Foto (c) Lars Laion Schluss. Aus. Vorbei. Ice Rock 2020 - Vorschau
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_text_separator title=”DONNERSTAG”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
FAT DOG
FIGHTER V
PRETTY WILD
SWEET NEEDLES
LUCY FOUR

Hué, Hoi An and the Hai Van Pass
Here’s to wishing you all a happy and prosperous 2019!
Our journey continued to the city of Hue, which is the ex-capital of Vietnam and was heavily fought over in the American war. After a rough and what turned out to be relatively costly coach journey (arguing with the bus staff about the fact that we were sold a ticket into the city centre not the outskirts, failing miserably in this plight and subsequently having to pay for a taxi into town), we arrived in the city at lunchtime. The city seemed to have a good vibe so we spent the afternoon walking the area south of the river, and decided to book a motorbike for two days’ time where we would ride the famous Hai Van pass between Hué and Hoi An.
The next day we walked into the old town where the conflict between American forces and the Viet Cong took place, but before we could get there we gave a group of local students a quick English lesson! The city wall is massive and the gates into the town hint that in previous years heavy protection was necessary. We decided against paying entry to the old citadel as the weather wasn’t great, but in hindsight it is probably necessary as we felt that the old town had quite little to offer. Perhaps the town has never recovered from the war (baring in mind that the infamous DMZ - de-militarised zone was just North of Hué), but after a few hours of walking the streets we found no appeal to the architecture, atmosphere and general amenity of the place. We spent the evening in the livelier part of town south of the river where Emily set us up a DIY food tour. We ate Banh It Ram (rice dumpling with pork and shrimp on a crispy cracker), Nem Lui (minced pork and lemongrass skewers), and Banh Khoai (bean sprouts and shrimp fried pancakes) before calling it a night. That wasn’t the end of the food tour though, as Emily got us up nice and early the next day for Bun Bo Hué, a famous local breakfast of slow cooked beef spicy noodle soup, with local greens and bean sprouts, fish ball and a blood cake (think gelatinous brown red patty). It was very tasty but even after four months on the road, we still aren’t fully acclimatised to Asian breakfast especially with congealed blood at 7am!

We were happy to be moving on and after picking up our steed for the day we headed east to the coast before turning south towards Da Nang. Having checked the forecast before committing to the Hai Van pass, we were expecting the possibility of rain. Little did we know what was in store for us next. Within an hour the heavens opened, and seemingly Mother Nature couldn’t find the stop cock until we reached Da Nang city. It was lashing it down the whole way along the pass so the views that it is famous for were covered in cloud. Thankfully we were kitted out with rain coats and full length ponchos so we were quite dry, but the journey was knocked a little when, during tightening our kit on the back of the bike, Emily badly burnt her leg on the exhaust. We stopped at a nearby waterfall where she could cool it down, and after some tears and first aid she put on a brave face and we cracked on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once we lost altitude the weather cleared up a bit and the sun came out for a little while which was very welcome. We stripped down to t-shirts and cruised along the coast into the city where we stopped for lunch before planning the next part of the trip. As huge ominous clouds hung around the hilltops, we opted to not ride onto the large outcrop east of the city, but instead made our way to Big-C supermarket to pick up supplies for our next stop, Hoi An. We checked in to our first self-catered place (not including the Marriott) at around 5pm and quickly had to get to the bike shop to pick up our bags that had been shuttled down by them that day, before dropping them off and then gunning it back to the bike shop in time for closing at 6pm. It was all a bit hectic, but after a long walk back to the apartment via a closing fresh market we had a small dinner and got an early night.
We woke up to some of the heaviest rain we had ever seen...3 days of non stop rain flooded the sewers, bringing water up to our shins as we waded through the streets in our rain coats topped with a plastic knee length poncho. It was at this point that we knew that we had made the right decision to go self-catered for this week. The studio was great; brand new with ample space to spend a week catching up on life admin and wedding planning. The slightly unfortunate thing was that because we were the first customers, nothing worked properly and despite it being described on Airbnb as a “fully equipped kitchen” we had to send a list of things that we needed to the owner so that we could get by...knife, chopping board, utensils etc! Thankfully Mr Vu was very accommodating and after a day of repairing the leaking sink, faulty shower, noisy washing machine that electrocuted you, and ice spitting and leaking air conditioner things settled down.
Tumblr media
Over the next eight days we enjoyed Hoi An as best as we could even though the torrential rain continued. The town itself is very quaint with matching colour schemes, signage and distinct lack of high rise buildings, but you need to prepare yourself for bustling your way through tourists. Truck loads of them arrive by bus on a daily basis and swarm the streets. Of course, we contributed to the chaos being tourists ourselves so we tried to see past all the selfies, vendors selling tack and being offered bicycle tours and concentrated on finding a good tailor for some of our wedding attire. After many hours of discussing build quality, negotiating prices, and inspecting fabrics we chose Kimmy Tailors. We were received by them far better than any of the other three tailors we went to, and they also proved to us that their manufacturing was better than the rest so we put down our deposit and got measured up. By the next day that had broken the back of the work; we were amazed at how quickly they turned our order around and the quality wasn’t hindered at all. Two suits, an extra pair of trousers, a work jacket for Dan, four bridesmaid skirts and a dress for Emily, all put together in less than 24 hours; unbelievable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We had a total of three fittings and three days after placing the order, we were all fitted, paid up and good to go and buy an extra suitcase for our kit. In between times we had tried to have some shoes made for us as we were recommended a shoemaker by Kimmy, but not going into details our attempt failed. The designs weren’t matched, colours different and quality questionable. We got a refund and parted ways. Note to reader, tailoring in Hoi An shouldn’t be a problem, but footwear is another matter!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our last couple of days were spent walking around the areas of the town that we hadn’t explored, and we also hired bicycles on our last day and ventured out to the coast and surrounding area. We didn’t rate the surrounding area too highly, so if you are visiting Hoi An without the plan of getting some clothes tailored, a few days is probably enough for you! To top off our time in Hoi An we, by luck, found out that two of Dan’s friends from North Devon, Bryony and Kyson were also in town! Some of you may already know that they have had a very similar itinerary to us over the last couple of months, but they have been a couple of weeks behind us. We were banking on meeting in Indonesia where we knew our plans overlapped, so it was made all the sweeter when we found out we could meet three weeks before then! We had the evening in the studio finishing off our food and drinks and catching up on our travels. We also made plans to meet in Ho Chi Minh City in the next week.
Bring it on!

[:en]”Well, you’ll come back totally changed!”
No matter who I told two years ago that I just wanted to hike through the entire state of Arizona for two months, the reaction was almost always the same. For many, it was usually associated with the idea of a pilgrimage. Self-discovery and so on. I always tried to put that into perspective in the best possible way. I just wanted to go hiking, enjoy nature. And that just once longer than the usual two to three weeks annual vacation. What difference does that make to me?
Exactly one year ago I finished my thruhike of the Arizona Trail at the Utah state line. Has nothing really changed?
Simplicity
On March 18, 2019 I started my adventure at the Mexican border. On my back a 65 liter backpack with a tent, sleeping pad, quilt, some extra clothes or layers, a solar panel and stuff that I would need on such a trip on foot through the desert. The amount of clothes and utensils was no different than if I had only been on the trail for four days.
My daily routine was absolutely simple: take down the tent, put everything in my backpack, start hiking, eat, find water sources, hike, hike, hike, enjoy the view, find a place for the evening, cook food, prepare sleeping quarters, sleep. And again and again. After a while, every piece of equipment had a permanent place in the backpack. And when nothing was lying around in the morning, everything was packed. It’s as simple as that.
Shopping was just as easy. Go into the general store, get a quick overview. A few cookies, lemon cake, tortillas, tuna and chicken and something warm for the evening for X-days. After ten minutes I was usually done. The smaller the shop, the faster the resupply.
Mile after mile of great landscapes, unique postcard motives. Wow-thoughts only alternate with where the best place for a break is. Where is the next water source? How many layers do I put on today? What do I eat from my food bag tonight? Can I pet this snake?
Making contact. No problem. In the outdoors everyone is with the same purpose: get out, enjoy nature, leave the daily routine and the masses behind. Some in their RVs and some – like me – just with their backpack on their back. Somehow, despite the remoteness, I was never alone and yet only surrounded by the people I wanted to spend time with. On the trail, you quickly figure out if you are on the same wavelength and you end up hiking together for weeks. Or you let go after a few hours or even minutes.
This simplicity soon becomes a habit.
Back to reality
From the Hike to the holiday
After these wonderful 800 miles from Mexico to Utah the break from everyday life was not over yet – but it was different. With the rental car we wanted to go from Nevada via Utah to Colorado and California. A great plan, but at the beginning I was totally overwhelmed.
The arrival in Las Vegas with my sparse equipment and the dirty hiking gear put me into a world where I suddenly felt like an alien. With my trekking poles in my hands, the satellite messenger on my backpack and the crumpled water bottles, the dressed-up Las Vegas travellers in the colourful glitter world gave me scornful looks.
During the first big shopping for the big road trip I fled from the huge WalMart after twenty minutes of complete lack of planning. Too many people, too much choice, too much of everything. Switching from my small 65-liter backpack universe to this confusing SUV rental car drove me crazy. Clothes everywhere, which I found superfluous in this amount. Two tents, two sleeping pads, two sleeping bags, boats, paddles, waterproof vests, ice axes, bear canister, fire bowls, wood and gas stoves. And tons of small stuff without system. So much time wasted searching for things. I wanted my simplicity back and more than once I stood frustrated in front of the jam-full car for the first days.
From vacation to everyday life
At some point, every holiday and sabbatical comes to an end. In order to make my return home a little softer, I had planned on another week of buffer time in Berlin – my place of residence – instead of going straight to work the next day as usual.
The return to my apartment felt strange. I had sublet it for the duration of my absence, but there was no sign of that anymore. It was as if I had never been away. Doing the laundry, unpacking luggage, shopping, going through the mail. Everyday life was back. From 100 to zero.
From everyday life to work
“Hello, welcome back. We have some very urgent tasks waiting for you.”
Whether I was gone for a week or five months, the reaction of my colleagues was basically the same. Certainly I hadn’t expected a huge welcome party. But I would have appreciated a little more interest and care after an unusually long absence with a lot of adventures. Isolated in my (involuntary) individual office I felt quite out of place and excluded.
It took almost a month until my boss had a kind of return conversation with me. Time enough to realize: it can’t go on like this. I have to change something. Something that will increase my motivation in the sometimes pointless everyday life of administration. My attempt for an internship in corporate communications in my own company was rejected by my then department head. He thought I would only want to pursue my hobby. It’s strange that this can be interpreted as a disadvantage to want to do what you are interested in and studied for. What you “burn for”.
Other employers have (also) nice jobs
So the job advertisement of a freelance editor at the provider of route planning and navigation in the outdoor sector „komoot” came out just in the right moment. Komoot – in the southern German language area that means as much as practical and simple. Simplicity was exactly what I was looking for now. So I updated my 13-year-old CV, made an appointment for application photos and sent my documents digitally. About three weeks later I had a video conference with the chief editors and another week later the digital freelancer contract fluttered into my email inbox.
My task: planning exciting tours, creating and describing suitable routes, researching great areas and thus preparing unique adventures in nature for the users. A job that is fun, that makes sense for me. After my self-imposed trial period of one and a half months, I reduced my administrative job to 30 hours a week to have more time for the freelancer job.
After a good eight months now I can say for myself: the change was absolutely right and important. In the meantime I work much more than before my sabbatical. 48 to 50 hours a week are less the rarity than more the rule. Nevertheless I am much happier and more balanced. It’s worth a lot if you can work at least partly with passion on one thing – while the rest pays the rent and secures further sabbaticals.
Komoot as a hundred percent remote job also shows me that it can be absolutely pragmatic on the job and that a company can be successful despite or exactly because of this. An approach from which many companies and administrations can cut a slice. For me it is the step into a changed present and the way into a new future. Germany forever? Certainly not.
A new attitude to life
But it’s not only the job that has changed. The weeks in the wilderness, with all its beauty and challenges, have made me extremely relaxed and calm. With the new attitude, not to get upset or annoyed about things that you cannot change, life is much more relaxed. That starts with the weather. It won’t rain less if you mope all the time. Instead, there is much more positive energy to look forward to a warm dinner, a dry hut or the next rays of sunshine. Or the new contact lenses, if you’ve been hiking in the backcountry with just one in your eye for three weeks because the other one broke.
In the meantime I am also ready to leave things to themselves. At the beginning of June 2019, I hiked with my boat into the desert for a five-day river trip to the other end of the Canyonlands National Park – without knowing how I would get back to the car that was parked 80 miles away in Moab. Before the Arizona Trail it was unthinkable for me to get involved in complete lack of planning. But the trail showed me: There is always a solution!
After I had hiked back from the Colorado River through the canyons for two days after the tour, I sat – in the shade of a small bush – next to a trailhead. I made myself a cup of coffee, because I was waiting for the German tourist I had met during the hike, who had offered to take me back to Moab by car. At that moment an older couple asked me if they could give me a ride. Just like that. There is always a solution.
And that’s it with hiking?
Of course not. Before I started the Arizona Trail, I asked myself if I would be tired of living in a tent after that. On the contrary. Weeks before crossing the state border to Utah it was obvious to me: the next trail has to come. And it must be longer. 800 miles are gone too fast. So since October I have been saving for the next sabbatical: six months in 2022. The Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada is firmly planned. Because: Home is, where you pitch your tent.
Was soll das schon groß in mir ändern?
It’s as simple as that.
Kein Problem.
Etwas, was meine Motivation in dem teilweise so sinnlos erscheinenden Verwaltungsalltag wieder hebt. Wofür man „brennt“.
Einfach so.
Denn: Home is, where you pitch your tent.
[:] [:en]How a thruhike changes your life[:de]Wie ein ThruHike dein Leben verändert[:] [:en]"Well, you'll come back totally changed!" No matter who I told two years ago that I just wanted to hike through the entire state of Arizona for two months, the reaction was almost always the same.

Where To Go in Bali: 15 Best Places To Visit For Travellers
Bali is one of the most talked-about travel destinations in the world, and for good reason. With hip beach towns, traditional villages, a couple of volcanoes, and even a few smaller islands off the coast, there are plenty of places to visit in Bali.
While Bali may look a bit unassuming on the map next to gargantuan Java – the most populous island of Indonesia and home to the capital of Jakarta – there’s a lot going on here.
A quick ride can bring you from a bustling tourist hot spot to a tranquil Hindu temple in the rice fields. Or perhaps you’d rather cool off with a swim in a rushing waterfall. There are countless things to do in Bali to keep you busy!
I first visited on a short vacation while I was teaching English in China. That trip was the impetus to quit my high-paying job and leave my cushy life to go on a gap year. A second, slightly longer trip to Bali still wasn’t enough, so I applied for the Darmasiswa program and moved there for a year to study the language and culture of Indonesia.
You may be tempted to just plop down in your beach chair, but I’m here to encourage you to get out there and explore all that this idyllic island has to offer. Having made many loops around the island, I know where to go in Bali and am excited to share my list with you.
Here’s my list of the 15 most amazing places to visit in Bali.
1. Seminyak
One of the top places to visit in Bali is the trendy and stylish beach town of Seminyak. It’s just north of the chaos of Kuta-Legian, but it feels worlds apart. Here you’ll find boutique hotels and swanky villas as well as some excellent dining, shopping, and nightlife.
While the town itself is nice, the highlight of Seminyak is definitely Double 6 Beach. The waves are mild here, so it’s a good spot for swimming, boogie-boarding, and surfing. It’s the perfect place for beginners and there are plenty of surf schools around to help you start carving up waves. After all, surfing is huge here in Bali.
This west-facing beach is a prime spot to watch sunset. Locals and tourists alike gather here every night to watch the sun dip below the horizon. One of my favorite things to do in Bali is plopping my sarong down in the sand at Double 6, dumping some rum into a fresh young coconut (I call it a coco-rum-onut) and watching the sunset.
There are also plenty of awesome bars to take in the sunset in Seminyak. My personal favorite is La Plancha, where they have a multitude of colored bean bags and lights on the beach, tasty cocktails, and some fantastic food choices. Other fun spots include the upscale Ku De Ta and the Double Six Rooftop Bar.
With so many amenities and a much more laid-back vibe than its southern neighbors, Seminyak is the perfect beachfront base for your Bali trip. Be sure to check out our guide on where to stay in Seminyak to find the perfect spot.
2. Ubud
Our next stop is the cultural and spiritual heart of Bali – Ubud. Located about an hour north of the capital, this is actually a cluster of different villages that are each run by their own local committee (known as banjar in Indonesian). For the purpose of travel, though, it’s easier to just refer to the whole area as Ubud.
In the central part of town, you’ll find the Ubud Palace and the market. This corner is often clogged with day-trippers and a seemingly never-ending stream of taxi drivers and touts. If it’s a bit of peace and quiet you seek, you’ll have to dig a little deeper in Ubud!
Thankfully it’s not that hard to get your zen on in this town. One of the most popular things to do in Ubud is taking a yoga or meditation class, and there are plenty of excellent studios to choose from. If that’s not your thing, you can always just go for a stroll along the scenic Campuhan Ridge Walk out into the rice fields.
Ubud is also home to a few amazing museums, such as the Blanco Renaissance Museum and the Agung Rai Museum of Art. It’s a major center of Balinese dance as well, and there are nightly performances at venues all over town. I recommend grabbing dinner at the Lotus Cafe so you can see a show at the beautiful Water Palace.
Speaking of food, you can try the Balinese specialty babi guling (roast suckling pig) at the famous Ibu Oka restaurant here. There are also some incredible vegetarian restaurants to choose from. Ubud is definitely one of the best places to visit in Bali and should be included in your itinerary.
3. Mt. Batur and Mt. Agung
Indonesia is located in the Ring of Fire, and Bali alone is home to two active volcanoes. If you’re trying to figure out what to do in Bali and are up for a challenging adventure, you can try to reach the peak of one or both of them!
Mt. Batur is the more accessible of the two and is an easier hike. It’s 1,717 meters tall and can be climbed in just a few hours. Even though it’s relatively easy, you really can’t hike Mt. Batur on your own. This is because of the “company” (i.e. local mafia) that controls the trail and access to it. Don’t bother trying to deal with them and just book a tour with a reputable company.
I can personally recommend visiting Mt. Batur with Bali Eco Cycling. They have a variety of options for tours, including their summit, swim, and spa tour that includes a soak in the hot springs and a massage. What better way to relax after climbing an active volcano? Check their website to explore the options.
Those seeking a bit more of a challenge may head to Mt. Agung, Bali’s tallest and holiest mountain. In fact, Bali’s Mother Temple (Pura Besakih) is located on the slopes of the volcano. Towering at 3,031 meters, reaching the peak is no joke! You have to start the trek in the middle of the night to get to the summit for sunrise.
Note: Mt. Agung has actually been quite active these days, having erupted as recently as May, 2019. You may want to check on the activity there before getting your hopes up about going on a trek. Despite being able to see the volcano from my house on a clear day, I never made it to the summit of Mt. Agung. It’s high on my list of things to do in Bali when I make my triumphant return.
4. Canggu
Next up on our list of the best places to visit in Bali is Canggu. This town has long been popular with surfers but is starting to attract more visitors and digital nomads.
Since the beaches here are grey or black sand and the waves can be a bit rough, you won’t find huge crowds of tourists or touts here. It’s nice being able to kick back in a beach chair and crack an ice-cold Bintang without being swarmed by people trying to sell you sarongs. The breaks in Canggu are great for more advanced surfers or for a bit of extreme boogie-boarding.
Not too long ago, the area was nothing but rice paddies. As with much of Bali, change has been quick here. Canggu is now home to plenty of hotels, villas, restaurants, and bars catering to a new wave of visitors. Popular hangouts here include Old Man’s and Finns.
Canggu has become a digital nomad hot spot in Bali, with several co-working spaces and cafes to choose from for your productivity needs. If you’re thinking about working remotely from here, be sure to read this guide to digital nomad life in Canggu. I always enjoyed visiting Canggu, and next time I head to the island I’m hoping to use it as a nomad base.
5. Sidemen
One of my absolute favorite places to visit in Bali is the tranquil town of Sidemen. Just so you know, it’s pronounced “see-da-men” and not “side-men.” If the crowds of the beach towns and Ubud get to be too much for you, this is the perfect place to escape to.
Sidemen is a traditional Balinese village full of terraced rice fields and Hindu temples. You won’t find any McDonald’s or Starbucks out here! That being said, the town has developed into quite the tourist destination in recent years. It’s home to several excellent hotels, spas, and restaurants, making it a great spot for some good old fashioned R&R.
If you’re interested in learning about Balinese culture, Sidemen is an excellent choice. You can head to a workshop to learn about the village’s lovely songket style of weaving or sign up for a cooking class to make Balinese classics like pepes ikan.
Perhaps one of the best things to do in Bali is simply jumping on your motorbike and going for a ride. Sidemen is the perfect base for exploring one of the most beautiful areas of Bali. Just don’t be surprised if you get stuck in a bit of a traffic jam when a traditional funeral procession comes through the streets! Rather than get frustrated, just sit back and take it all in and enjoy this eye-opening cultural experience.
6. Amed
If you’re hoping to spend the majority of your trip to Bali underwater, then Amed is the place to be. Much like Ubud, this is actually a cluster of villages that get grouped together for simplicity’s sake. Amed is located on the northeast coast of Bali, which literally feels like a different planet when compared with the crowded beach towns of the south.
It’s a quiet place where most people make a living off of fishing and salt production rather than hustling tourists. I’ve been all over the island, and I can definitively say that Amed is one of the best places to visit in Bali.
As it’s very near the very active Mt. Agung, the beaches of Amed are black volcanic sand. This deters the throngs of sun-seekers who crowd the beaches of Kuta and makes for a much more relaxed vibe.
A small tourist industry exists here, thanks in large part to the excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities just offshore. There are plenty of dive shops in Amed and a variety of options for exploration under the sea. The most popular dive site in all of Bali is Tulamben, and it’s located just a short drive away.
For more on diving in Indonesia, be sure to check out these posts:

Diving in Raja Ampat
You don’t have to be a diver to enjoy Amed, though. There’s some great snorkeling to be had just offshore from many of the beaches. You can simply swim out for a few minutes and look around the amazing Japanese shipwreck. There’s also an easy hike that takes you to a nice viewpoint of the area and plenty of choices when it comes to guest houses and restaurants.
7. Bukit Peninsula
Next up in our grand tour of Bali is the Bukit Peninsula. This rugged and rocky mass of land in the south is just barely connected to Bali. It definitely feels like a whole different island down here.
Even though Bukit is home to some of the best beaches in all of Bali, it’s generally free of the crowds. That’s due to the fact that many of the beaches can only be reached by walking down a few hundred stairs, which means you need to walk back up when you leave!
If you’re willing to sweat a bit and work your leg muscles, you’re spoiled for choices when it comes to beaches. Some of the best include Balangan, Green Bowl, and Padang-Padang. With a rented scooter and a few days, you can try to hit all the beaches of Bukit.
One of the top things to do in Bali is to visit the area in Bukit known as Uluwatu. Here you’ll find the cliff-side Uluwatu temple, which is home to some naughty monkeys and a nightly kecak performance that’s absolutely mind-blowing. I highly recommend adding it to your Bali itinerary.
If you’re wondering where to go in Bali for surfing, Uluwatu is one of the best spots. If you’re like me and can’t stand on a board to save your life, just pull up a chair at one of the bars on the cliff and watch the experts carve up the waves below. Single Fin is the go-to bar/restaurant in the area, especially for their rowdy Sunday night shindigs.

8. Candidasa
For those who prefer a more laid-back vibe on vacation, the town of Candidasa on Bali’s east coast is a solid option. Despite being one of the most beautiful places to visit in Bali, it manages to fly under the radar of most visitors.
One reason Candidasa is free of crowds is that there aren’t really any beaches here. They mined the coral reef here a few decades ago in order to get materials for construction, and this caused the beach to be washed away. Don’t freak out, though — you can easily access the Virgin Beach from here, which just might be the best beach in Bali.
The best part about staying in Candidasa is its proximity to Bali’s water palaces. Tirta Ganggaa and Taman Ujung area are both easily visited and are absolutely stunning places to explore. Snap lots of photos here, because these are some of the most Insagram-able places on the island!
Another popular activity in this area is visiting the original Balinese village of Tenganan. The people here have maintained their traditional way of life despite the wave of development on the island. Although arranged tours here are admittedly a bit contrived, it’s still an interesting place to see.

9. Munduk
While lounging on the beach is great and all, there are also some awesome places to visit in Bali that are up in the mountains. One such spot is the small town of Munduk. It’s located in northern Bali near the three lakes and the perfect base for exploring the area.
With a day or two in Munduk, you have a lot of options for what to see and do. For starters, you can go hiking around the Tamblingan and Buyan lakes to enjoy some amazing views and cool mountain air.
After a nice hike, head to the nearby Banjar hot springs. Here you’ll find several pools full of therapeutic spring water surrounded by tropical gardens. There are a few dragon fountains spitting water out that make for a great massage as well!
The next day you can head downhill a bit to visit Lake Beratan, which is home to one of Bali’s most important temples. Thanks to its location, Ulun Danu Beratan appears to be floating in the lake! Be sure to bring your camera for this one as it’s one of the most photogenic spots in Bali.
There are a handful of local guest houses and restaurants in Munduk to ensure a comfortable stay. If it’s shopping and nightlife you’re looking for, though, you’ll be disappointed. This is a place to go for some peace and quiet out in nature and it’s one of my all-time favorite spots in Bali.
10. Sanur
I may be a bit biased towards the next destination, as it’s where I spent most of my time living on the island. That being said, I firmly believe Sanur is one of the best places to visit in Bali.
This quiet beach town is located on the southeast coast of Bali and is just a short ride from the airport. I’m not joking when I say it’s a sleepy place. In fact, many people refer to it as “Snore” for that very reason!
Despite being home to a sizable expat population and having a tourist strip full of hotels, spas, and restaurants, Sanur remains a traditional Balinese fishing village at heart. This is a great place to experience the local way of life, especially during major holidays such as the Balinese New Year (Day of Silence) or the annual kite festival.
One of the best ways to experience all that the town has to offer is by joining one of the Sanur Cycle Tours. They’ve got lots of awesome options for exploring Sanur on two wheels, including their popular Jurassic Park Tour. You won’t see any dinosaurs on this one, but you will get to wander around an abandoned theme park.
Since it’s on the east coast, you won’t find big waves here. It might be the best beach in Bali for just chilling in the ocean, and you can enjoy some SUPing here if you’re into that. Sanur also makes a great base to explore the next few spots on our list of the best places to visit in Bali.
11. Serangan Island
In all my time on the Island of the Gods, I found one of the most interesting places to visit in Bali to be Serangan Island. It’s located just south of Sanur and is connected to the main island by a bridge. Even though it’s just a stone’s throw from the over-developed tourist zones of the south, Serangan remains a traditional slice of rural life in Bali.
The island is full of dirt roads and farmland, so the only traffic you’ll have to worry about here are the cows! There are also a few temples you can check out here as well as a turtle conservation center. It’s free to visit, so they fund the place by putting turtles up for “adoption.” With your donation, they let you name a turtle and release it back into the wild.
One thing I love about Serangan Island is just hanging out on the beach. This is very much a local beach with no frills. It’s the kind of place where you lay your towel on the sand, order up some ikan bakar (grilled fish), and maybe sip on some arak (the local spirit). They don’t see many tourists over here, so you won’t find the pushy touts that you get on the west coast beaches.
12. Nusa Islands
From Sanur, you can easily catch a boat to visit the nearby Nusa Islands. Although they’re three separate islands, these are actually a part of Bali. It only takes about half an hour to reach them from Sanur, so you can even pop over just for a day trip.
If you can squeeze it in your itinerary, I highly recommend spending a night or two over here. All three islands are worth taking the time to explore and are home to some stunning beaches. Here you’ll find some solid breaks for surfing as well as some of the best snorkeling and diving opportunities in Bali.
The most popular island for tourists is Nusa Lembongan, where you’ll find a good selection of hotels and restaurants. We spent a few days on Lembongan at the end of our first visit to Bali and it was a major highlight of the trip.
In the middle is Nusa Ceningan, which is the smallest of the three. It’s home to the scenic Blue Lagoon and a “Secret Beach” that really isn’t that secret.
The biggest of the islands is Nusa Penida — a rugged, hilly, relatively undeveloped island. I recommend hiring a guide for the day to explore Nusa Penida so you get the most of your visit. When we did that, we were actually allowed to go into this huge temple in a cave during a ceremony since we were with locals.

13. West Bali National Park
It takes quite a bit of effort to reach, but West Bali National Park is well worth it. This is located in the far northwest corner of the island and is actually very close to the ferry crossing over to Java. If you’re traveling to or from Java, you should definitely be sure to include a stop here.
There are two different park offices where you can go to buy your permit and arrange for a guide. The entrance fee for the park costs about $15 per person and you’ll need to hire a guide if you want to do some hiking here.
The most popular option for hiking here is the Tegal Bunder Trail, which is pretty easy and only takes around two hours. For more of a challenge, you can embark on the Gunung Klatakan Trail, which takes up to eight hours to complete.
In addition to hiking, West Bali National Park is one of the best places to go snorkeling or diving. Sign up for a tour to visit Menjangan Island, which is named after the many deer who call it home. I’ve done snorkeling and diving tours of Menjangan and had a fantastic time on both.
14. Pemuteran and Lovina
Even though they’re two separate towns, I’m grouping a few places in north Bali together. First up, there’s the small town of Pemuteran. There’s not a whole lot going on here, but this is the perfect base for exploring West Bali National Park as it’s just up the road.
In addition to hiking or diving in the park, you can also explore a few temples near town. Pura Pulaki is home to a bunch of monkeys, who are believed to be the guardians of the temple. Just across the street, Pura Pabean boasts some incredible ocean views. Both are easily visited on a half-day trip from Pemuteran.
About an hour or so up the road, you’ll find the sleepy beach town of Lovina. If seeing dolphins is on your list of things to do in Bali, then you’ll definitely want to include a stop here. You can spot the lumba-lumba (Indonesian for dolphin) early in the morning and it’s super easy to arrange a boat tour. There’s even a statue of dolphins right on the beach!
Both Pemuteran and Lovina have a decent selection of hotels, restaurants, and bars. They’re also both devoid of the crowds that plague the southern beach towns, making them some of the most peaceful places to visit in Bali.
15. Denpasar
Last but not least, we head to the capital city of Bali — Denpasar. While most visitors skip out on Denpasar entirely, I think it’s well worth a visit. There’s plenty to see and do here and it’s easily visited on a half-day trip from any of the southern beach towns.
Start your visit to Denpasar off in Puputan Park. This large green space is home to the impressive Bajra Sandhi, which is a monument to the Balinese people. It’s worth it to head inside to see the detailed dioramas that depict the history of Bali and its people. Plus, you get some great views of the park from the third floor.
Another must-see in Denpasar is the Bali Museum. While it’s not the most impressive museum in the world, it’s worth the $1.50 entrance fee to check out the traditional architecture and the unique Balinese artifacts.
Next door, you’ll find one of the most important temples in the city. Pura Agung Jagatnatha is dedicated to the supreme god Sanghyang Widi and is a beautiful place to check out. If you come under-dressed as I did, they’ll let you borrow a sarong to wear so you can go inside and have a look.
In the capital city, it should come as no surprise that there are also plenty of places to shop and eat. Find a local restaurant and sit down to a plate of nasi campur (mixed rice) for a classic Indonesian dining experience.
Why Kuta is Not One of the Best Places to Visit in Bali
You’ll note that I didn’t include the popular Kuta-Legian area of Bali. This is because it’s by far the busiest tourist area of Bali and therefore (in my opinion), it’s also the worst. It’s full of chain hotels, American fast-food restaurants, and obnoxiously loud clubs. It’s also a hot spot for con artists and thieves who prey on clueless, drunk tourists.
When I think of Kuta, I think of people speeding down the street on a motorbike. I also think of the crooked money changers that rip you off and the opportunistic thieves who snatch bags as they drive by. Whenever people ask me where to go in Bali, my first response is “Definitely NOT Kuta!”
There are far too many better places to visit in Bali. As a tourist, Kuta is fun for one night out I suppose, but beyond that, you’re far better off spending your precious time on the Island of the Gods elsewhere and I hope my list helped you decide where to go in Bali to enjoy the pristine nature — away from the crowds.
Ready For Your Trip to Bali?!
If you’re planning a trip to Bali, I recommend trying to mix up your itinerary a bit. Spend a few days in a beach town, then head up in the mountains or rice fields for a change of pace. Add in a side trip to the Nusa Islands if you can, or just cruise up to the north to explore a quieter side of Bali.
Whatever you do, you’re going to love it and will inevitably start planning your return trip before you leave! After traveling there twice and living there for a year, I’m still not even done with Bali. There’s just so much to see and do on this beautiful island that you can keep coming back and always discover something new.

NOTES ON POP
WHITNEY HOUSTON IN 1991
Friends and heartthrobs of the past, future, and present: where I am now, the temperature has begun its slow climb, and summer is preparing its eviction notice for all the gentle breezes and drives with windows down and the incessant joyful choir of birds. We will soon have to settle for less pleasing aesthetics of romance. Sweat becomes romantic because it will happen whether or not I want it to, and I’ve got to make the best of it. During summer in Ohio, the storms come briefly, but violently, and seemingly out of nowhere. The sun will be out as you make your way to the car, but by the time you arrive at your destination, you’re trapped in a parking lot with torrents of rainwater collapsing on your windshield. I think I would like to call this moment romantic, too, for all the times I’ve sat outside of a grocery store, or a bar, or an ice cream shop, turning up a song that reminded me of someone in hopes that the music and the memory might intersect and silence the downpour.
It is a privilege to have seasons. Sometimes, in Columbus, Ohio, we don’t get much of spring. Winter digs its claws in and then it’s suddenly eighty-five degrees with suffocating humidity. The planet, of course, may not afford me many more years like this one. One where I’ve been blessed with a distinct turning over from one season to the next. I like it this way, being gently shepherded through, as opposed to dropped in the middle of a landscape already in progress. It is hard to create longing without the reminder of what we’re longing for.
Speaking of longing, I am here to once again consider the moment in the pre-chorus of “How Will I Know,” which creeps underneath the song’s ecstatic and bombastic uncertainty. Whether intended in the original message or not, this was the first song that most clearly articulated the anatomy and anxiety and secret pleasures of a crush. While Whitney drags out the words of the song’s central question as only Whitney can, the backup vocals trickle in with “don’t trust your feelings,” which is the moment that feels the most true to the real-life conundrum. A person, shaky, but fantasizing toward confidence while, underneath, their friends try to whisper them back to reality.
It is not true that all people get crushes and it is not true that all people want to be someone’s crush. And it is definitely not true that these things happen in equal measure for everyone. But for the people who do crush and want to be a crush, I think that desire can rise and dissipate with the movement of seasons. I always found that my hopes of having a crush existed most eagerly in the early months of a year, as winter faded away. Those hopes peaked in the middle of summer, when I would strive to be romantically unattached, so that my heart could be tugged in any direction it pleased. I would guess this seasonal relationship might have to do with the structure of my life when I first discovered what crushes were. Which is to say, when I was in school, especially when I was in school but before my friends and I could drive, when even if a person was romantically linked to someone else, they would most likely part ways before the school year ended. Or pretend that they were going to give it a try over the summer if they lived in neighborhoods that were close enough. But, in the end, the seemingly never-ending possibilities of summer won out. In summer, small relationships or imagined relationships banished the larger relationship to the locker bays of the high school. At Warped Tour, a crush would accelerate into a daylong fling, because time was fleeting, and there was none of it to be wasted hand-wringing over maybes. And so, summer, even as an adult, is the time when I allow myself to be most susceptible to crushing on someone. Then, as the fall arrives and the cold begins to circle back around, I want to be indoors, preferably with a person I’ve had a crush on in the previous months. Your timeline may vary, of course.
There are many approaches to having a crush, and significantly fewer approaches to being someone’s crush. For the latter, some may be interested in knowing who has a crush on them and why, and I do see a lot of value in having that information. But for the former, I am too anxious for any interest in reality. Whitney Houston seems to be the questioning type, though none of us can say how long she’d been mulling over the questions before they spilled out. I can hold a crush longer than most of my friends can hold a grudge. I don’t really need or even want to know whether a person shares my affection. I’m content just letting the situation play itself out at its own pace. I get that for most people, this seems agonizing. But, for all of the agony, what you get in return is the imagined person and not the actual person. Or, if you’re lucky, you get to hold off on the actual person for a little bit longer, until you get to be with the actual person. Whitney’s agony seems more urgent, it ticks my heart rate up a notch when I listen to the song. Which, it must be said, is one of the most perfect songs ever crafted. Whitney is saying prayers! She is picking up the phone and dialing some numbers but then hanging up again! It is all too much! Though I’m not one to judge the manifestation of anyone else’s desires—particularly if those desires have been bubbling up to the surface with an unsustainable ferocity!
But where Whitney and I meet is this: the idea of falling in love over and over again within an endless loop of uncertainty. Sometimes, it isn’t even the person you’re falling in love with, just the uncertainty itself. I have been known to take everything as a sign, even if I am lying to myself. That’s part of the fun. It’s the idea of certainty that drains me. Sure, someone saying they don’t dig you like you dig them doesn’t stop a crush dead in its tracks, but it does make the emotional journey more finite. I don’t know much about love, and I don’t wish to know any more than I already do. Like Hayden at the end of the poem “Those Winter Sundays” where the reader can almost hear him, frantic and throwing up his hands:
What did I know, what did I know of love’s austere and lonely offices?
I give in to that question. There’s no satisfactory answer. And maybe there isn’t an answer to Whitney’s questions, either. I have cursed myself for misreading all my crush’s signals, but I have still felt thankful for the time those signals were there for me to read in the first place. To have a crush can be joyous labor, and can also be anguish, and can also be something that will vanish in a day or an hour and never be revived again. While out with my friends now, we’ll see an old acquaintance from afar and we might exclaim, “I can’t believe I ever had a crush on that person!” and we’ll laugh at the foolish desires of our past selves. And I like that part, too. Even if it is played up for effect. To crush now may mean to stay up well past your comfortable waking hours, gently scrolling through rows of old Instagram photos and attempting to not accidentally like one of them, despite your fingers quaking with excitement. There’s this old Kevin Durant tweet I love from 2010. It reads: “#uever wake up n the middle of da night and think about a girl u like or startin to like and sit at da edge of the bed n say damn i want her.”
And yes, surely that is one of the inescapable parts of a crush, too. The things that keep you awake, or send you to the edge of a bed, speaking out loud to no one but yourself and the world you’ve built with a person who—if you are one of the lucky ones—might be at the edge of their own bed, thinking of you.
Whitney’s tune doesn’t end with resolution. It ends with desire piling on top of more desire. She was always better at that than she got credit for. Whitney’s voice and the singular stamp she made on ballads is memorable, of course. But so is the way that she set a blueprint in pop music for how to unfold desire without resolving it. I hear it now in Carly Rae Jepsen, in Robyn, in so many others. “How Will I Know” ends with an accumulation of the words how will I know sung repeatedly. Nothing promised except another rotation of the question. On the end of the third and sixth rotation, the background singers chime back in. First with I say a prayer. And then, I fall in love. It is hard to hear, because it comes as the song fades away, but it’s there.
Falling in love can be an isolating act, even if another person is present while it is happening. It’s all so interior, based on many moving parts and internalized messiness. It isn’t always like this, of course. But when it has been like that for me, I’ve come out of it happily exhausted, wondering why anyone would want to do this more than once in a lifetime. But, of course, when whatever love I’ve claimed fades, I find myself renewed, in search of the feeling once again. I have found ways to renew it even while still in love. Last fall, there was a point where I had a crush on the leaves, for all their twirling and kaleidoscopic showing off. I have a crush on the first few days of daylight saving time in either direction, when the sun does a real generosity and tricks me into staying out longer and later. Or, when it abruptly exits early, reminding me to bow to my true self. I have a crush on the way the familiar buildings of Columbus, Ohio, poke their faces through a puffy wall of clouds when I descend into the city after being away for too long, and it is always too long. I have a crush on too many sentences in too many books by too many people to name. Since I have already decided that sweat is romantic, friends, let me say that I also have a crush on the feeling of night air cooling the sweat off skin when a body pours out of a hot and packed space. I am beginning to have a crush on crystals, I think. Definitely obsidian, but perhaps a few of the others that look like miniature caves. And, yes, I have a crush on memories that were surely not as beautiful as I have made them out to be. Because that’s the whole trick. I’ve had crushes on all my friends, and if they don’t have one back on me that’s fine because I’m still going to text them at unfortunate and odd hours of the day with some useless miracle that I couldn’t possibly keep to myself. So few of my crushes speak back. I am cultivating my comfort with unanswered desires, and it is going well. I have room for so much more. I say a prayer. I fall in love.
