Digimon Day (08.01) Extra Special: Lui ⨉ Meiko

SURPRISE~

I think Meiko deserves love and I want her to have love. I wanted her to interact with Rui and Ukkomon... And Meicoomon too.

I think they would get along, especially since they're sort of "outsiders" of the Adv'99-02 group and have a few things in common, like being completely isolated from other people with digimon and growing up with only their digimon and parents around...

She could be considered Rui's big sister at this point. I agree with my friend who pointed out that it would be kind of pointless for Rui's whole development if he gets attached to the 02 kids and doesn't make friends on his own. So... I think since Meiko is somehow another person like him... Maybe they could meet and become friends?

(Add Wallace to the mix, and you have the first Toxic Digimon-Human Group Therapy from the Advverse.)

DIGIMON ADVENTURE 02 THE BEGINNING BLU-RAY RELEASE COUNTDOWN

02 Group ⨉ Lui

5.24 → 5.29 (release date)

It was a bit challenging to find ways of depicting Rui bonding with them all, especially when some of them didn't get enough interactions with him in the movie...

But I think everyone would be so cool and amazing in his eyes, those six basically helped him to overcome something that had been haunting him for years, and he learned a lot with them too.

I think each of those six had become an important friend in his life. And they definitely might be introducing him to other people they know (like, the older six, Wallace, Michael, Meiko... the International Chosen network...) and encouraging him to make friends on his own.

I've fallen in love with Rui even more by watching the movie. Like, a deep connection about a kid who once had no friends and now is an adult with possibly with legit real friends. And those kiddos here made him make amends with Ukkomon and then solve everything peacefully, and decide to restart from step one again. And maybe, in the end, he can look back and notice maybe some of those friendships he made as a kid weren't totally an illusion and try to reconnect with them just as he managed to connect with Ukkomon in this movie?

02 surely is a story about relationships, and so is this movie...

仮面ライダールート • Kamen Rider Root.

Since Ukkomon is the origin of the digimon, he gives Rui the power to become a Kamen Rider. Ukkomon is a digimon that hatches from an egg that Rui happens to find on his doorstep. With Rui's kindness and care, the egg hatches into this critter.

Kamen Rider Root might not be able to control space-time, but can simply control minds and use a BigUkko-Hammer to attack. Also... tentacles released from Ukkomon's evolved form -- BigUkkomon.

There is no helmet yet. I'm trying to design it, but I didn't like any of my attempts, so I'm posting it like this.

Edit two: Here's Kamen Rider Root's Helmet!! It's a little funky and cute with a touch of eldritch horror because... Well, BigUkkomon is really like that.

Digimon Day (08.01) Special: Lui ⨉ Chosen Children 1999 gen.

The idea of Rui meeting the 02 children's elders is appealing, and I wanted to do it from day one. I think they're also essential to the lore, so I like to imagine how they would interact with the supposed First Chosen.

Rui's impressions of them are not bad, don't let some of his reactions fool you! He pretty much thinks they are all cool and oh my god why are all these people turning into some important famous people?!

Rui feels like when you know someone who knows someone famous, or when you witness your friends going BIG later in life.

This kid is easily impressed (headcanon? based on his first impression on the Ukkomon scene?), so of course they are all so cool in his opinion. And he's still sorry for giving Taichi and Koushiro a headache with the Eggcalypse.

They're not perfect, and I'm pretty sure Daisuke and the 02 group are using themselves and their senpai team as proof that digimon partnerships are supposed to be messy and mutual, not perfect bonds.

I love this universe and these kids. Oh my god, I want to write more headcanons and fanfics about them interacting with Rui-kun now... 😔

(And, maybe... some for... others too... You know... them, him and her... and oh some sad person who's possibly Rui's antithesis lol)

Part 6 of 6 - Lui ⨉ Taichi

I swear, I wanted to make my stupid recurring joke when I imagined what would happen in the movie back in 2022: The stupid joke of Taichi finding it impossible that the first Chosen Child is YOUNGER than him.

And I have to admit, before this movie, I wondered how old the first one would have been. I'm not here to argue about why I support the theory that Rui is the first -- because even the movie wants you to doubt EVERYTHING Rui claims and tells the 02 kids/audience [read the 'read more' for explanation]

So yeah, why would Taichi find it suspicious? Because it goes against his own knowledge or what he was told. No, he doesn't dislike Rui or think he's untrustworthy. It's more like he thinks something doesn't make sense. And Rui himself was isolated from EVERYONE and EVERYTHING related to the digimon until his first contact with the 02 kids. And we don't know if Ukkomon wasn't another kind of digimon who was isolated from the others to the point of not understanding his own kind. Maybe Ukkomon was just parroting what his higher-ups told him to do and say (and unfortunately, Ukkomon is not like, smart enough... Uh... watch the movie and you might understand???)

Besides, Taichi thinks that the first Chosen, the "Legendary Origins of Everything", would have been older than him. And then this... tiny little sad guy appeared. And... It's FOUR YEARS YOUNGER than him.

As for Rui… He wouldn't understand why Taichi doesn't seem to believe him. It doesn't bother him, it just… Taichi's presence is like standing in front of an important person, and his stupid digimon had probably caused this man a lot of headaches… "I'm sorry??!"

But no worries, Taichi and Rui will get along. Taichi knows that whoever the 02 kids trust cannot be a bad person! Even if that person is just a very sad, awkward potato who's bad at people!

Especially if Taichi and Rui go to eat Daisuke's delicious ramen on Tuesdays while Motomiya Ramen is open~

(btw the countdown ends here, but there's one more surprise to finish July doodles...!! Yeah, this is for July 30, not July 31!!)

As for why Rui's status as the first Chosen is doubtful and it's not clear whether it's true or false… Might get a bit longer so bear with Ni ↓

The truth is… Rui never claims to be the first Chosen Child in the movie. The one who started claiming that he was the first was the 02 Group itself! What Rui said in the PVs and in the movie is that "I was the first person to form a partnership with a digimon in the world" (this was also part of the announcement PV & promo art!) So, is Rui the first or not? The fact that it's very unclear, and that they seem to contradict all the information he gives you with what the 02 kids (and us) know so far, is meant to make you question it. And Advverse never had "solid, clear" answers because… Everything is unknown to everyone there, not even the entities of the Digital World (Holy Beasts, Gennai & the Agents, Homeostasis, etc.) seem to know everything. And that's okay? The human world and the Digital World are still mysteries, so it would be boring if we had all the answers imo.

So the movie does not seem to want to break the mystery surrounding everything, or rather, does not want to "contradict" previous things that have been released.

The Advverse, the OG one, is very very COMPLICATED, so yeah, messing with it is REEEEEEEALLY dangerous, so… Take everything Rui and Ukkomon say in the movie with a grain of salt.

Part 5 of 6 - Lui ⨉ Yamato

SPACE. Not that I think Rui is a real nerd (affectionate) about space and such, but I think he is easily impressed by people who are so cool that if you tell him that Yamato is training to be an astronaut, he might start exclaiming "WOW?! ARE YOU SERIOUS?! THAT'S SO COOL!!"

And I think he would become a Yamato the Astronaut fan.

On the other hand, Yamato is basically the 02 group's dad friend now (glances at Kizuna) so I guess he would accept giving Rui some help from time to time if needed. Since Rui's beta headset phones survived (they appear in the cold opening!) -- I guess Rui and Yamato can talk about music too? (I mean, Ogata sings so it wouldn't surprise me if in the future they just make a ref to that detail...)

Also, just for funsies, here's some little dialog I've been thinking about while planning this:

Rui: Are you really an astronaut? 😯

Yamato: I'm training to be one?

Daisuke: And he's also Takeru's big brother!

Rui: WAIT, REALLY?!

Yamato: What did you tell him, Daisuke?

Daisuke: Me? Uhh...

Takeru: We told how cool you are and a real [tons of stupid trollish lies he fed Rui because Rui is kind of TOO NAIVE]

Yamato: ........................................................

Daisuke: It wasn't me!! I only said that you have a degree in space things! TAKERU IS WHO CAME UP WITH THE REST! 💦
