The first time you say his name after the separation, it’s still his given name. There’s still an edge of tenderness to the confusion and hurt present on your tongue. You try to hide it and brush it off as nonchalance, someone who’s not actively hurting since the break-up. It almost makes Kazuya think that you’re okay, that maybe you guys can retain that companionship (though he knows it’s a lie). It doesn't have to be as bad as it seems.

The third time you say his name after the split, it’s corrected halfway through. Your voice turns stern when you catch yourself saying his given name, an old habit. By the time you finish calling him by his family name, you’ve turned a little cold but more at yourself than at him. It’s a little funny, something that makes him snicker a bit (even if just internally). But there’s a part of him that recognizes that, even now, you still think of him with a level of affection that favors his given name, spoken by few.

For a while, you stop saying his name altogether. He can tell that you’re self-conscious and frustrated with yourself for any lingering attachment. It’s stiff and uncomfortable but you push through. It’s alright, though he sometimes misses the way his name would sound, building in your heart before rolling off your tongue. Not that he should expect it—you guys aren’t together and it’s not a privilege he has anymore.

The tenth time you say his name, it’s a shock to his system. No longer is there any hesitation, no longer is it wrapped in a soft caress before being breathed into the world. His family name—the name of his father, of others not him—falling effortlessly from your lips as it had before. Before the flirting and teasing, before the shared laughs and accidental grazing of hands, before the confession, rushed and sweet, before the blossoming romance that swept you both off your feet. Before that feeling of being on top of the world. It takes him a moment to recover and he feels a little crazy for getting stuck on it, but it was his decision and you’re doing fine.

The first time he hears you call another by their given name, it’s a knife to the heart. Your lips shape into an involuntary smile, one that comes naturally simply by speaking their name aloud. There’s warmth he had forgotten existed, enough to make anyone feel they’re intruding upon an intimate moment. You say it with a hint of reverence and overpowering love and he remembers what it was like to be on the receiving end. He wishes you would say his given name once more, but all he hears is you repeating the name of the one who now makes your heart flutter. There’s an ache in his chest and it might be the first time he realizes the weight of the you-shaped hole in his heart.
