DOCTOR JEKYLL - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Hammer Studios
SYNOPSIS: In a contemporary adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's novella, "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde," Nina Jekyll, is secluded as she recovers from an undisclosed incident. Seeking assistance, she interviews candidates for a live-in personal assistant to provide companionship, manage her meals, and assist with medication. She establishes a bond with her newly employed helper, Rob, and together they must collaborate to prevent Hyde from destroying her life. However, as Rob settles into the household, Dr. Jekyll experiences peculiar mood shifts, becoming hostile towards him.
REVIEW: Over the years, Robert Louis Stevenson's novella, "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde," has been adapted numerous times for both the big and small screens. In 1971, Hammer Films released their unique take on the novella, titled "Dr. Jekyll & Sister Hyde," directed by Roy Ward Baker. This adaptation featured a gender-bending twist. Approximately 50 years later, Hammer Films is releasing a new adaptation of Stevenson's novella, starring actor Eddie Izzard. This latest adaptation promises to bring a fresh perspective to the classic tale.
Dan Kelly-Mulhern's approach to the material is subtle and reserved. The story unfolds predominantly on Dr. Jekyll's estate, with a few additional locations, such as Rob's flat, a market, and a bar. The estate, a lavish British property, confines the action to a limited number of rooms, including the classic "locked room" trope. The plot unravels as Rob finds himself ensnared between Jekyll and her enigmatic "secretary," Sandra, who disapproves of Rob's presence. Initially, it is unclear whether Jekyll's medication or a peculiar green cigarette is responsible for her erratic mood swings, which intensify over time. Rob, depicted as somewhat naive, fails to recognize himself as the prey in this dangerous game of cat and mouse. The third act serves as a pivotal turning point, where all pretenses are dropped, and Rob is confronted with a crucial decision that drastically alters his perceived reality. Kelly-Mulhern's work presents several elements that could have been further explored for a more profound examination of the concepts of good and evil, as well as morality. At its core, the story primarily delves into the character study of Jekyll and, to a lesser extent, Rob. Notably, an aspect of the tale evokes the feeling of a staged play, particularly in its lack of smooth transitions when Jekyll transforms into Hyde.
The captivating performance of Eddie Izzard as Doctor Jekyll adds compelling layers to the film. Izzard's screen presence exudes the essence of British society, transitioning effortlessly between empathy and sociopathy. In particular, there are scenes where Izzard seamlessly shifts between vulnerability and authority, creating a dynamic interplay with Rob, played by Scott Chambers.
Chambers' portrayal of Rob prevents him from being merely a bad character. He allows the audience to perceive his character's flaws and bad choices without judging him as inherently evil. The chemistry between Izzard and Chambers is undeniable, contributing to their captivating performances.
The supporting cast, comprised of talented British actors, provides solid performances that enhance the narrative. Their collective efforts contribute to the film's overall intensity.
DOCTOR JEKYLL boasts strong production elements. While it lacks a distinct "wow" factor, the costumes, locations, lighting, editing, and production design coalesce to craft an engaging and cohesive world that serves as a riveting backdrop for the story. Blair Mowat's musical score deserves special mention, as it effectively complements the film's atmosphere, enhancing the emotional impact of the performances. Occasionally, the score evokes the classic Hammer film scores.
Hammer's first new film in decades, DOCTOR JEKYLL, deviates from expectations of a modern interpretation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novella. Set in a contemporary yet classical environment, the narrative seems shallow, failing to address the novella's profound questions. However, Eddie Izzard and Scott Chambers' captivating performances create an engaging cat-and-mouse dynamic. While the film's climax features an unexpected twist, incorporating supernatural elements that I found unconvincing, DOCTOR JEKYLL ultimately remains a solid film. Despite its inability to fully embrace the complexities of Stevenson's tale, it falters in the climax.

RWLC: Lebanon 32 - 14 Ireland Match Report & Highlights
Lebanon 32 Ireland 14 RLWC 2022 : Ireland fell to a crushing defeat at the hands of Lebanon as their Rugby League World Cup dreams were shattered in the Leigh Sport Village.
Reece Robinson was the first to get over for a try for Lebanon and Mitchell Moses added the extras.
It worsened for Ireland just two minutes later as Jacob Kiraz benefitted after Ireland fell foul to ill discipline and conceded another penalty within their own 30 metre line.
Brandon Morkos added Lebanon’s third try just before half-time but Ireland did at least respond before the break as Louis Senior skipped over for the Wolfhounds’ first try. The extras were missed and that made it 20-4.
Lebanon head coach Michael Cheika, speaking to BBC Two:
“It was a bit scrappy at times. You clearly saw two teams who were nervous playing in a very important game.
“We stuck to the fundamentals well, I wasn’t too happy we lost our heads a little bit. I thought Ireland would try and rough us up a little bit, we lost a bit of our way there and that’s when we made some mistakes.
“But all in all, really pleased. Now we’ve got to finish the job off to qualify against Jamaica. How we prepare over the next seven days will decide if we get through or not.”
Head-to-head
Lebanon have never lost to Ireland in their three previous meetings, drawing twice and winning once.
Their last encounter was in 2009, when Lebanon recorded a 40-16 win in Bridgend and this will be the first time they’ve faced each other at the Rugby League World Cup.
Ireland record
Ireland first qualified for the Rugby League World Cup in 2000 as co-hosts, registering their best performance to date of fifth place.
They have featured in every tournament since, coming ninth in 2017 after failing to advance from their group, despite two wins over Wales and Italy.
They are in fine form winning their last three men’s internationals by an aggregate score of 115-14.
Lebanon record
The 2017 Rugby League World Cup was just the second time the Cedars have qualified for the tournament.
Mitchell Moses put in a Player of the Match performance in their opening game to claim their first ever win, a 29-18 victory over France.

Mare of Easttown: What If No One Killed Erin McMenamin?
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
The following contains spoilers for Mare of Easttown through episode 4.
Who killed Erin McMenamin? That’s the question at the center of HBO’s atmospheric crime drama Mare of Easttown…alongside “how does Kate Winslet pull off that Wawa-saturated accent?”
The show offers no shortage of suspects. Seemingly every single character on Mare of Easttown has both cause and some sort of backwards reasoning for killing the innocent young mother played by Cailee Spaeny. Mare’s ex-husband Frank (David Denman) is rumored to have fathered Erin’s son DJ (though that theory is disproven in this week’s episode 4 “Poor Sisyphus”). Erin’s ex-boyfriend Dylan (Jack Mulhern) and his awful new girlfriend Brianna (Mackenzie Lansing) clearly want Erin out of the way. Deacon Mark Burton (James McArdle) has a questionable history at previous Catholic parishes. Then there’s the fact that successful author from out of town Richard Ryan is played by Guy “please cast me as the bad guy” Pearce.
Even Mare’s daughter Siobhan (Angourie Rice) is pretty shifty – having technically been the last known person to see Erin alive. She’s also still recovering from the death of her brother and seems to have a strange streak of cruelty based on the bizarre events with her ex-girlfriend that leads to her grandmother sustaining a concussion in episode 4.
But what if Siobhan didn’t kill Erin – nor Richard Ryan, nor Mark Burton, nor Dylan, Brianna, John Ross, Father Dan Hastings, Chief Carter, or anyone else in Easttown? What if…no one killed Erin McMenamin? Allow me to explain.
Crime dramas, the good ones at least, are very rarely about the crime itself. Instead crime dramas are useful narrative vessels to explore the souls of characters and their homes. People’s personalities are undoubtedly at their most heightened after a traumatic communal event. Stories about a murder within a community allow for a storyteller to really examine the nature of said community.
As its title implies, Mare of Easttown is particularly interested in both the people and the place it’s depicting. The Delaware County region of eastern Pennsylvania has often gone unexamined in movies and television but Mare of Easttown creator and native Pennsylvanian Brad Inglesby uses the show as an opportunity to portray the little-seen people who live in opioid-ravaged communities southwest of Philly.
What Inglesby and the show thus far seems to be communicating is that life is much smaller, yet no less intense, in the hilly, forgotten areas of America. Easttown is a very insular place. Mare Sheehan was a basketball star at the local high school and opted never to leave, becoming a detective to serve the town she’d spent her whole life in. Mare’s life is hopelessly wrapped up in the lives of her peers. The fact that she can’t solve the missing person’s case of her friend Dawn Bailey’s daughter, Katie, is viewed as a personal slight rather than a professional failing.
When someone is breaking into homes in Easttown, Mare knows exactly who to look for because the husband of her friend just happens to have a heroin problem. Even Detective Colin Zabel (Evan Peters), of the more sophisticated county police department, solved his big career-making case by understanding the work schedule of one of his peers.
The people of Easttown know each other intimately, and that’s why when one of their own turns up dead, so many of them seem like viable suspects. Just about everyone in Easttown has history with Erin McMenamin and her family, and therefore just about everyone seems to have motive and opportunity to have killed her. That level of knowledge of one another’s lives is a distinct advantage of living in a small community, but it also means that solving a murder case is an emotionally fraught endeavor. In fact, some cases that look like murder might not be murder at all.
Why is Mare Sheehan so certain that Erin McMenamin has been murdered? Admittedly, the signs are there. Erin’s body is discovered at the bottom of rocky ledges in a trickling river. She is missing a finger, has a nasty gash on her head, and is naked save for her underwear bottoms. Mare quickly identifies the scene as a murder and the gash on Erin’s head as a gunshot wound. We never really have any reason to doubt her as this is a murder show after all, and Kate Winslet usually knows what she’s talking about. There’s also the fact that Erin’s murder comes in the wake of Katie Bailey’s disappearance. Surely, there is a serial killer in the community killing young women.
But as the ending of episode 4 reveals, that may not necessarily be the case. Katie Bailey is alive, kidnapped by a local creep and imprisoned within the walls of Bernie’s Tavern. Not only that, but her kidnapper has abducted another local sex worker named Missy Sager. There is certainly a violent criminal on the loose, but it would appear that his M.O. does not match up perfectly with Erin McMenamin’s “murder.”
At the beginning of episode 3, the Easttown coroner shares her findings with Mare and Zobel. The autopsy identifies the time of Erin’s death sometime between midnight and 2 a.m. (pretty precise for a small town coroner, but we’ll leave that aside for now). There are no tears or abrasions present on Erin’s body. They also found no evidence of sexual assault. The coroner theorizes that Erin’s finger was severed by a bullet consistent with Mare’s theory, but they did not find any gunshot residue. Most importantly: the coroner notes that the bruises on the body are consistent, meaning they all happened at the same time.
Read that last bit again: the bruises all happened at the same time. Doesn’t that sound like… a fall? Erin was found at the bottom of a cliff with consistent blunt force trauma spread evenly across her body. The only three things that suggest a murder are: Mare’s theory that the gash on Erin’s head was from a bullet, the missing finger, and the removal of Erin’s clothes. And each of those things could have an explanation beyond murder.
Mare could merely be wrong about Erin’s head wound and the small town coroner goes along with the seasoned detective’s theory. A bear or another animal could have bitten Erin’s finger off post-mortem or it could have just been wrenched away from the violence of her fall. The lack of clothing is harder to explain away but perhaps Erin did indeed plan with hooking up with someone in the woods that night.
In episode 3, Mare theorizes that Erin and her assailant disrobed elsewhere and that’s when Erin was killed by a gunshot, even though none of the area’s partying teens reported hearing gunfire. The ever-helpful county bullet-sniffing dogs do find evidence of gunshot residue and Mare then finds a bullet lodged in a tree. But do you know what that means? Someone shot a gun…in a rural area…in America. All trees in Delaware County should be presumed to have bullets lodged inside them until proven otherwise.
Mare of Easttown excels in getting the viewer wrapped up in the local drama of all its characters. The town and the citizens within it are richly realized. Each new revelation about a suspect in the Erin McMenamin case feels deeply personal, because how could it not? Ultimately, the show could be banking on viewers making the same mistakes that its detectives do.
Easttown is primed to accept a murder of one its youngest and brightest because why wouldn’t that happen in this shitty world? The murder of Erin McMenamin is tragic but it gives Mare and the people of Easttown one more opportunity to solve a mystery and make things right – to bring resolution to the Katie Bailey case.

Sometimes, however, there isn’t a boogeyman on the other end of a dead body – just a slippery rock and some shit fucking luck.

background:
aidan grew up in a filthy rich family of spies/assassins as the youngest of six children
his siblings are all very skilled in their respective areas of espionage, and their parents were ruthless and cold towards them to ensure they focused on their training
aidan’s great grandfather was the chief of intelligence at mi5 in the 1950s, so his family has a name and an image already set for them - prim, proper, and excelling in their own unique field of espionage
aidan grew up feeling inadequate - he wasn’t as good as any of his siblings, and his parents were merciless when it came to reminding him of the fact
his siblings weren’t much help either, trained to be the best, they only made his inadequacy more obvious the older they all got
his childhood was filled with training, fancy dinners, being forced to smile and meet friends of the family even if he was bruised and battered from training earlier
aidan began to become insolent, not showing up for training or deliberately failing his homeschooling to piss off his family
his parents were outraged and decided enough was enough, sending him away to a boarding school in america when he was 12
aidan, sick of feeling like he’d never amount to anything, decided to lean into his role as the black sheep of the family
he started to use what he’d been taught against the school, sneaking out at night, graffitiing the walls, stealing things from stores all around london
he actually loved his boarding school when he first began -- enjoying being away from his family, not compared to his siblings, and studying normal subjects instead of things like ‘which artery to sever for the swiftest death’
he amassed a small group of friends, impressing them with his training and ability to break into anything, win fights against the older students, and lockpick
he was able to avoid punishment for a while, and expulsion wasn’t an option when his parents were huge benefactors of the school
so the school adapted, became more vicious in their punishments
started refusing him meals, locking him in cupboards to keep him from sneaking out
and when he started picking the locks of the cupboards, they installed heavy duty padlocks against the doors
this is where he developed his claustrophobia, from being stuck in the closet sometimes even overnight in the pitch black
these punishments eventually wore him down enough that he stopped misbehaving so intensely at the school
and when his parents gave him the ultimatum -- attend a prep school for spies, or stay at the school, he agreed to finally behave and follow his parent’s path for him
despite his misbehaviour, aidan is still very good at what he does - call it genetics, but every member of their family excels at being spies or assassins
when he graduated his prep school with top marks, despite his past bad behaviour, his parents sent him to blackthorne to continue his studies, hoping that by the time he completes college he’ll be good enough to show off, like the rest of his siblings
during his time at prep school, he began to realize that he is bisexual, and fell in love with another legacy boy
their parents, though, were both intensely disapproving of both their sexualities and the relationship itself, and broke them up right before blackthorne
aidan now has a complex about love, and more specifically, the fact that he is incapable and unworthy of actual love
his first year at blackthorne went fine, and aidan actually enjoyed began to enjoy his studies, but he never stopped misbehaving, bitter from his childhood and his parents’ tampering of his relationship
( and also possibly just for the simple joy of constantly having reports sent home about his bad behaviour )
now:
don’t get me wrong - aidan is very good at what he does.
he’s quite the talented marksman and sharpshooter, and given a knife in a fight, he’ll most likely win
even without his legacy name he would have gotten a place at gallagher
he’s a bit of a bastard, at times, and a sullen one, too -- but he doesn’t mean anyone harm
he simply likes to always be honest and says things that are probably best left unsaid
he still sneaks out at night, often, to just be alone and roam around unsupervised, a remnant of both his childhood under constant surveillance, and his time at boarding school where nights were often spent locked in a cupboard
nasty smoking habit developed while at blackthorne, as well as his habit of getting drunk and/or high whenever possible in order to let loose
( he has a very unhealthy relationship with his emotions )
he loves to graffiti, and does so often, as an outlet for his creative drive and desire to vandalize things
but, all in all, he does really like it at gallagher, and doesn’t necessarily want to get kicked out, so he makes sure he’s subtle and not too destructive
he sometimes writes with his five older siblings, although most of them are as bad as his parents - he’s the closest to oscar, his second oldest brother, and kitty, his older sister
he wears a lot of blacks and grays, and basically dresses like an e-boy, but he may or may not stab you if you bring that up
he likes to sketch, but if you tell anyone that he’ll kill you, having had it drilled into him at a young age that art is useless and for people without real talent
he carries a gray butterfly knife around with him everywhere, as it was a gift from his eldest sister for his success at prep school
[ W A N T E D C O N N E C T I O N S ; ]
not-so-friendly ― while aidan is a very charming asshole, he is still sometimes the worst, and i can see a few people he pissed off or insulted or something
partners in crime ― aidan’s a little vagabond, and loves to graffiti stuff and sneak into places he’s not meant to be, and i want some people to get into deep shit with him
family friends ― the black family is quite high-profile, what with his parents running an empire and all of his older siblings being talented spies/assassins themselves, so i can imagine there’s a lot of people at gallagher that he recognizes
blackthorne friends ― aidan went to blackthorne for a year before gallagher, so i want some people who did the transfer with him.
friends ― he may act like an asshole, but he’s a nice asshole
family ― there’s probably a few people related to him roaming around, so if you want a cousin or something let me know!
please hit me up to plot !

Simon Gregson: Coronation Street star addresses first teenage kiss on-set 'She was 24'
Simon Gregson has been a firm fixture on Coronation Street since he made his ITV debut over three decades ago. The Steve McDonald actor has since opened about the moment he had to lock lips with an actress on the Weatherfield set who was nine years older than him at the time.
The 46-year-old was joined by his co-stars Jack P Shepherd and Sair Khan on The Big Soap Quiz.
The trio went head-to-head with the cast of Emmerdale on the ITV quiz show.
Simon left host Stephen Mulhern stunned after he brought up the age difference between himself and his Corrie co-star.
Stephen told viewers: “This is Simon’s first ever Corrie kiss back in 1990.”

When Simon confirmed he’d been on the soap for 33 years, Jack replied: “I’m 33.”
Taking a cheeky swipe at the legendary soap star, Stephen asked: “So when you were born, you came into Weatherfield. How does that make you feel?”
Simon appeared unimpressed with the jibe, as he chimed: “Like, I want to go now.”
Meanwhile, his co-star Jack revealed he has stolen a “Newton and Ridley” bottle opener from the Corrie set.
