You know what? I feel like elaborating.
I really like the amount of details about cultivation in liu yao.
In many novels I read so far it's left mostly unexplained or skipped, e.g. the main characters are already powerful or godly and the text doesn't dwell how they got there, or the training doesn't go into too much detail above saying what someone is doing, or that a person meditated/entered seclusion for some time and they achieved a better understanding or "leveled up". Ofc you can fill the gaps yourself with the general knowledge of wuxia or xianxia, but it can end up disconnecting me a little from the characters. As in, I'm not invited into their mind to join the path to understanding, or I don't fully grasp their abilities and power, which can lead to feeling like I'm looking at mary sues who always have another trick up their sleeves to be revealed as a gotcha to both in-novel characters and me as a reader.
Here in liu yao you're so carefully taken through the steps. You observe the kids' confusion and questioning, their clumsy swordplay, the moment they connect to the energy which lets them form their qi understanding as well as how distinctly they feel and look at it. You watch how their meridians are stretched and refined, in what way they grasp another move or skill, what happens in their heads and to their bodies e.g. during meditation or when they're under an external influence.
Even when the text explores the divine realm level it's not just "these are hella powerful people, don't think about it too much" but instead tries to explain what it is like; what a cultivator goes through, what they just grasped when advancing, what they need to understand to go further or avoid going mad, what the risks and internal fights are.
Of course it's to some extend abstract, but that's a given when we're talking about something that can't really be translated into words and should be experienced in order to actually Get It. But the novel still explores it and lets you feel like you vaguely know where it comes from.
I love it so much.

i had liu yao on my list to read forever, never got around it and recommended it to a friend and now she asked what it's about. Could i ask you for a summary, pls? :)
Tumblr media
ANON YES BUT I'M NOT SURE I CAN GIVE A SHORT ONE
I rambled about liu yao here and here, so you can check if it's enough for you. The description on liu yao's carrd is also quite good:
What does it mean to seek immortality? Those who have ascended were human once, but do they ever stop yearning for the world they once roamed?
In the age of immortals and would-be immortals, ten-year-old Cheng Qian leaves his family to apprentice under the Sect Leader of the obscure Fuyao Mountain Sect. What follows next is a hundred-year-long tale of blood and sweat, tears and heartbreak, but also love and laughter, joy and triumph, and most importantly, a journey of finding that sometimes, a home isn’t always a place, but the beloved family that you make for yourself along the way.
And here I'll give/repeat a few points that I liked (tried to keep the info vague or as minor spoilers for the beginning of the novel):
the reader is closely taken through the character's cultivation progress (basically what I wrote here)
we meet the characters when they're small children and get to see their development, what exactly shaped them, why they had inclinations to some choices, or how their relationships with each other were built gradually and naturally
the characters aren't high and mighty from the start, which made them more real and relatable
typical for Priest's works subversion of some tropes, e.g. the spoiled and lazy peacock young master walks one of the toughest paths in Dao (which also usually produces aggressive and crude people, opposite to our niangniang), the cold-faced and snarky MC who is obsessed with getting stronger entered Dao through his heart, their shimei is quite unruly and powerful and there isn't fawning over her looks (which is what I usually see in danmei if a girlTM exists among the main characters); AND MORE, but i can't say much without more spoilers
cultivation and sects are kinda dissed instead of praised and fawned over, especially at the beginning, which was very fun and refreshing to read
I love how the pursuit of immortality is presented in liu yao. What even is immortality? If we shed all care about the world and ascend to merge with Dao... what's the difference between that and dying?
FOUND FAMILY AT ITS FINEST, LIKE LITERALLY THE DEFINITION OF THE TROPE
very slow burn, and the story pulled me in so much that I didn't even feel impatient for the romance
very funny, I laughed SO MUCH
but also cried :') I cry very rarely, so when a story manages to make me cry I gain additional respect for its ability to raise such emotions in a reader. And liu yao made me cry a few times :')
so yeah, it's a very interesting story with great world-building and a variety of distinct characters. It has some flaws ofc, sometimes the pacing got a bit slow and I had to harden myself to keep going, and the ending has a few open threads that could've been resolved but weren't. But I still love this novel so much 💚💚 one of my favs fr

Honestly I’ve wanted to read some more cultivation novels and have had trouble figuring out exactly where to begin, but knowing that a book actually goes into the details of the craft makes me much more compelled to read that one cause I love when books go into the specifics like that :D like yes give me those pseudo science explanations, let me know exactly what’s at stake in the most quantifiable means you can
YOU GET IT!!! i am such a sucker for explaining magic and fantasy elements, how they work considering the mechanics of the world. So Much Satisfaction and brainstorming and ideas ahhh
there are ofc some skipped or summarised parts in liu yao, which makes sense considering that you can't really follow every single step of a journey that lasts many tens of years xD Also imo at least the basics of xianxia (and wuxia) are needed, like the general idea of ascension and the "levels" before it, sword riding, qi and its fluctuations (like qi deviation), righteous vs demonic cultivation etc.
if you read it, enjoy the book~ :D

Liu yao is so fun and refreshing. The narration is full of biting remarks and cynical truths, stripping the usually high and mighty cultivation story where sects are like royalty into much more human world with all its dirtiness and diversity. Especially fond of the characters, each and every one of them is distinct and their own, from personality to even physical traits, from the very point of their first introduction; none of them is perfect, quite the contrary, they're all Very flawed in different ways, but! The growth! Even though I am still in the first part of the story where they're kids I can see how they change and gradually mature, together with their relationships. All very natural and smooth. I am transfixed.
And all that is done in such a light and hilarious way that I am constantly laughing out loud to my screen. Despite - or maybe because? - liu yao sect is so declining it feels more like home where these kids can have fun rather than a strict place full of honorifics and social games.
Anyway go read liu yao it's so fun

Would you mind sharing a link to where you're reading Liu Yao? I've been dying to read it!
not at all! I generally go from liu yao's NU, the first chapters link to Nanming's translation and it's so well done <333 I highly recommend and hope you enjoy reading 💚

You have my interest concerning liu yao but I can't find a place to download it or read it in its entirety any help would be much appreciated ☺️
*evilly rubs my hands* yes do come to my side, read liu yao, suffer have fun
concerning your question - I also don't know of any place with the full novel, it seems to be translated by several translators so no one really put it together as that would require the consent of them all. But the chapters are on the translators' respective sites listed neatly on NU so that's how I'm reading. And it's not that bad in terms of jumping between different sites - most of the novel is translated by 3 translators so you need to jump only every few tens of chapters.
you can easily get all the links on liu yao's NU, as far as i see the chapters are translated by:
1-33 - Nanming (who moved to Blob Translations from 9 chap)
34 - Asian Hobbyist
35-85 - rustycol
85-end - Chichi
all the love for them <3333

Note
you got me back into reading liu yao aah i stopped because the translators changed hands so many times and one of them, the quality was such a dip i couldn't continue without a lot of confusion. but that was back when i barely knew anything about c-novels and also didn't know who priest was. my favorite line has to be when one of the disciples turns the baby into a frog and takes her on a walk with a leash. i still remember it even two years later now. i hope we both enjoy liu yao.
sjdfhbsk THAT SCENE
now you made me a bit apprehensive because I saw on NU that translators changed a few times. I got a flashback to another novel that I dropped because the translator changed and the text stopped making any sense in the crucial and quite sensitive moment. I hope that it won't be as bad as you remember, that it was your unfamiliarity playing a big role :')
and lastly, I am now all

every time someone mentions that i pulled them into liu yao
enjoy your reading 💚
