this weeks episode of cr was so wild because on the one hand there was. ‘i cast command... the command is fap’ and the porn shoot in the basement and then on the other hand like existential god killing shit, thull still an ever-present and terrifying foe, theories flying left right and centre about predathos and the cerberus assembly and all sorts of shit. also the quiet rage in orym’s voice when he was talking about all the lives lost in preparation for the solstice?

thinking a lot about the part in notes 2/twisted every way where Raoul says ‘Christine, Christine, don’t think that I don’t care, but every hope, and every prayer rests on you now.”

cause like i feel like it’s one of the major things that sets Raoul apart from most leading males in musical theatre (this is a VERY broad statement but generally i’m talking about typecast highschool tenors - marius pontmercy, danny zuko, troy bolton, fiyero [to some extent] - generally vapid, flashy pretty boys). To some extent, Raoul is definitely a vapid, flashy pretty boy, and in no way am I saying that it’s a bad thing, but I do feel that some of the more interesting character moments of his are often overlooked. The whole way through Notes and Notes2 he is trying to soothe Christine, to protect her from the others - and then suddenly, in twisted every way, he makes what seems to be this giant u-turn, and is urging her to become bait for the phantom. 

I think this is super interesting, as it kind of inadvertently shows one of the darker sides of loyalty - he is so loyal to Christine and so dedicated to protecting her that he becomes swept up in it, knowing that it has to end somehow, and is desperately counting on the plan to work. He doesn’t mean to harm Christine, but he really has no way of truly knowing that the plan to trap the phantom will succeed. He almost doubles down on this sort of blind, manic rage as he sings to the phantom after this, declaring war upon him and feverishly setting about the trap with Andre and Firmin. It’s a really interesting moment of showing that his love for Christine isn’t just the foil to the Phantom’s - there is an element of morally grey overlap. Both are besotted with Christine, the Phantom to the point of possession and Raoul to the point of overbearing protection. 

idk i’ve just been thinking about that one phrase for a good few days now. Also the fact that it’s to the same tune as Prima Donna is definitely something too.

something about how buying a birthday cake for myself is making me really emotional. something about this being the first birthday i’m not spending with my family. something about being in my own space and open and loved but still not feeling quite right. something about how turning a new decade is terrifying the shit out of me. something about the fact i spend most of my days alone (which is FINE and i like it) but something about it being my birthday tomorrow that just makes it all a bit pathetic. something about all that.
