"All the way up to the late 1950s, coverage of lobotomy in the Danish press was often highly positive, with the newspapers regularly making bold claims. “Operation cures schizophrenia” roared one November 1953 headline in Ekstra Bladet. “20 per cent of the mentally ill cured by surgery” it was announced by another newspaper in 1952. The newspaper also highlighted that, in addition to those fully cured, “in 40% of cases, the same operation results in such significant improvement that patients no longer need to be housed in a chronic ward in a mental hospital.” Stories about spectacular outcomes with headlines such as “dangerous criminal receiver and thief cured by brain surgery” were also reported in the media of the 1950s. Positive articles were also to be found in other publications in which lobotomy was characterised as one of the greatest achievements of brain surgery in recent years.

One of the very few remotely critical contributions on the topic was published in 1953. Even then, however, the article focused mainly on operations that had been conducted in England, stating that only a “very moderate number of such operations had been performed” in Denmark. The article focused on the ethical dilemma of personality change but did not take a firm stance for or against the actual procedure. At the article’s conclusion, the author noted that there was “no doubt that these operations are occasionally successful and often appropriate, but so many are now being performed that doctors are asking themselves the question: is it right to perform these operations?”
