Doll and Lizzy we're doing the cheerleader routine. First of all, it was the warmup, stretching, and a light jog, however, there were eyes on the cheerleading, since they were all attractive after all.

Doll didn't like that one bit. She'd stop stretching to start doing pushups to appear more threatening to the jocks who didn't seem to get the idea, so, plan B was for Lizzy and Doll to constantly talk with Thad the most out of all the jocks, as Darren who was Rebecca's boyfriend knew to keep himself away.

Doll would constantly be around Lizzy at all times. People would say she is in Lizzy's shadow but in reality, she was towering over her to make sure no one was coming near what was hers.

This would go out the entire routine. Doll would do what she had to but she wouldn't let anyone peer too closely at Lizzy, however, sometimes she would lose focus and accidents would happen.

Once in the locker room Lizzy would end up gossiping with the other girls until she was the last one left to change, and of course Doll would stand there, leaning on a wall, arms crossed against her chest and her ginger lightly tapping on her arm, giving Lizzy a subtle look of danger, as if acting mad or disappointed that Lizzy stood half changed in front of the other girls.

'Come on it's not like they will ever get to come anywhere near getting more than looks' Lizzy would respond to Doll's attempt at intimidation, which she honestly found adorable.

After one of those days Doll warped her hands around Lizzy's waist, resting her hand on Lizzy's shoulder with a small sigh. "Doll, I'm changing." Lizzy said with a small smile while holding her used shirt.

Doll would let her go after 'tormenting' her just a few more seconds by not letting her go, and once Lizzy was all dressed up Doll wouldn't let her go. She hugged her softly and tenderly, holding her in a loving and affectionate grasp, resting her head on top of hers, closing her eyes, and inhaling her scent deeply.

Lizzy would hug her back, warping a hand around her waist, and the other resting on Doll's hip as her head rested on her chest.

"I don't like how they look at you." Doll said as she continued to hold Lizzy to herself. Lizzy simply giggled. "Oooh, danger woman, what are you going to do about it?" Lizzy teased while looking at Doll's overall tired expression from all the hard training they had that day. "Come on. You know I can handle myself, plus, you're always there, right?" Lizzy asked with a bright smile as she gave Doll a playful look. "Come on Dolly. What are you so worried about?" Doll sighed softly and hugged Lizzy closely. "You're right. I'm never letting you out of my sight."

Upon hearing these words Lizzy smiled contently happily closing her eyes and warping her hands around Doll's neck before placing a soft kiss on her cheek.

Doll smiled slightly and kissed her on the forehead affectionately.

Another day, another struggle for these hopelessly lovesick girls.

Why did one fall for the other...? Well, they met at the cheerleader auditions.

"May the best of you win!" The coach announced as he let each girl do her dance to prove the speed, stamina, strength, and flexibility needed to be a cheerleader. Lizzy was sure she was going to win, why wouldn't she? She was confident, she had the looks, and she had what she needed to pull it all together. But that's when she saw her.

The most beautiful angel to walk upon this earth. Deep red eyes followed by silky smooth dark purple hair and a perfect posture. She was tall, and there was this eery mystery feeling around her. Lizzy caught herself with her mouth agape watching her. Her eyes were filled with admiration and adoration for her. Who was this angel?

When it was over her name was called over and she had to pick herself up and do her performance but each time she looked at the girl she felt her heart melt, and when they made eye contact she nearly screwed up.

Once everything was over Lizzy was beyond embarrassed, but then...

"Privet. You had some interesting moves there." "Oh- uh- yes, thank you. Your dance was fabulous too, I haven't seen moves like that before." "I based them off from traditional folklore dances of my land." "Ah...you're-" "Doll. As for my nationality, Russian." The girl said giving her hand out. "Lizzy. American I suppose." Lizzy said with a small smile as she took Doll's hand.

Doll looked at her for a moment and then burst into laughter. Her laugh was so...perfect. It was angelic, delicate, lively, and full of life and grace. Lizzy found herself blushing and soon enough she was laughing as well like an absolute idiot.

Doll looked at her the entire performance. While everyone else was dancing, she was looking at Lizzy instead. Her golden hair, her bright neon pink eyes, her sassy attitude. Something was pulling her towards this girl, and that's when she decided she was going all out on her dance instead of doing whatever she felt like because she didn't seek this cheerleader position like the others. She improvised everything and it worked. She caught her attention, she saw her looking at her, and she placed her hex around her, causing her performance to be shabbier and yet she hoped it would be overlooked because she wanted to see this girl more often.

Their 'friendship' slowly built in the privacy of their own little 'hangouts'.

'Labels are for losers' Lizzy said confidently when someone would try and label Doll with something to bring her down. Believe it or not, the popular cheerleaders were also a target for bullying. However, Doll wanted these labels. She wanted them so badly because...

"I want you as my girl." Doll said once and never again did she need to because at that moment Lizzy flew straight into her arms kissing her over excitedly on the cheek.

Now they held each other in the locker room, milking the few minutes alone for as much love as possible.

"I love you." Doll said pressing her forehead on hers. "Sure." Lizzy replied bluntly. "I mean it." Doll said looking at her with half-opened eyes. "I know! I am not saying you didn't." Lizzy said with a dandy smile.

"I love you." Doll repeated. "Who wouldn't?" Lizzy said playfully. "I love you." "I know~" Lizzy teased her. She knew what Doll wanted and she was being cruel, and yet her hands were playing with Doll's hair. "I love you." Doll said rubbing her nose on Lizzy's. Lizzy simply laughed.

"I love you, Lizzy." "Hmmm, who?" Lizzy said teasingly playing dumb, she was milking this situation as much as she could. "I love you, my girl, my love, my world, my sun, my everything, I love you, Lizzy." With every word, Lizzy's eyes softened and her heart melted as she found herself looking at Doll with a look of endless love as she rested within Doll's embrace. "I love you too Doll, more than anything else." Lizzy replied softly.

Two that found each other by accident and decided to never let go of one another again. What more could someone want? Cute picnic dates and sleepovers. Late-night talks, hand-holding, kisses, hugs, cuddles. The entire package was between these two, and nothing could change that, not even death itself, for even if they were to be parted by something so cruelly and merciless they would still forever have the other one in their heart.

The storefront at the end of the Rolling Acres plaza was completely forgotten until Joe and Darren came along to clean and help set up some of the old store. The inside was dusty and a bit cluttered but nothing too outrageous for the contracted pair. While Joe got busy unloading the boxes full of displays and advertisements, Darren’s job was to clean the clutter and trash left behind by the previous owners and occasional vagrants.

The trash left behind by the previous owners was a bit more baffling than any piss bottle or skidded undie left by a vagrant. “Tch, no wonder this store went so under” said Darren as he squatted down to inspect the NO MORE BUTTCRACKS advertisement from the old clothing store, which almost made his eyes roll to the back of his head. While the sign did help bring Darren’s attention to his own chunky backside which was slipping out of his pants and starting to slip a bit out of his underwear to moon Joe, whose own pants started to slip a bit as he worked to get the crate off the dolly. It was just an insulting ad-campaign pure and simple, maybe it would have worked much better out in the city, but out in the Rolling Acres, men dress for comfort sake and clothing for the stuffy suits of the world wasn’t what caught anybody’s eye. “Yo Darren, come over here and help unpack these!”

Darren and Joe got to work unwrapping the crate that would be full of advertisements that would be hung from the store’s ceiling as well as in the windows and behind the counter. It took a minute because of how wrapped up it was, but eventually they took the plastic off and grabbed a crowbar to pop the lid off the top. As Darren reached in for an advertisement off the top he smiled, “Ah hell yea!” exclaimed Darren. Joe nodded “Finally a store that gets it. Definitely checking back here once it’s open.”

Let’s start with the Republic City Beifongs, shall we?

San. His model is this dude, Lee Min Gyu, who is a schoolteacher from Korea. (A schoolteacher. All I have to say is that none of MY teachers looked like this.) I do see him as a mix between Bolin and Opal and their families. He’s got Bolin’s bright green eyes.

Bu. Face model Darren Chen. Softer and sweeter than San, looks more like a Beifong. I’ve seen him in a few different Chinese dramas and always think of Bu. His eyes are Opal’s softer green. His bison’s name is Ginger, because he’s very shaggy with fur the color of grated ginger.

Pearl is represented by this very muscular crossfit trainer. Pearl has the body of an earthbender, despite being an airbender. She’s wicked strong and like her father, whom she mostly resembles, has strong features. She’s not classically pretty but she’s arresting. Her hair is short and curly, though. In fact, she has Darren Chen’s haircut, above. She will finally get her arrows at the same time as Emerald, despite earning them in her teens. She’s got Bolin’s bright green eyes. Her bison’s name is Boom-Boom, AKA Boomster AKA The Boomerang AKA Boom-Bada-Bing AKA you get the idea.

Now on to the Flower Garden!

Orchid. Obviously this is a stock shot but this is exactly how I see Orchid, although she’s certainly got more of a fuller figure, thanks to her mother. A classic beauty. (I had to mentally add in Nuo’s dimples to all 4 girls.) Her eyes are Beifong however, that jade green color.

Iris. This woman is from a Mongolian catalogue. The name Baatar is Mongolian and that’s how I headcanon Baatar Sr. Iris takes after him - and her father - a great deal. You do not want Iris on the opposite side of you in court. She likes to win. At everything.

Rose. Another stock photo, but she’s a mixup of both her parents. She’s got her father’s firmer jaw but her mother’s black eyes.

Poppy. I saw this online as part of a photo shoot and HOLY FORKING SHIRTBALLS this is EXACTLY Poppy Beifong right here. EXACTLY. It was like someone yanked her right out of my head, high heels and lipsticked mouth and do you really think you’re worth my time attitude and all. Jai never stood a chance.

On to the Northern Air Temple!

Goba. I only have a child reference model for Goba, because for a long time he was an eternal three year old for me. With his squared-off little smile! Just age him up as necessary. He never gets taller than about 5′6″ (168 cm) but Hua, like her mother, appreciates a short king. His bison’s name is Dolly, named for his first dolly (which he will keep for the rest of his life).

Katara II carries a fair amount of the Mongolian look about her. She resembles both Baatars a great deal, although she’s got the pale green Beifong eyes. Her bison’s name is Tuuli (which is Finnish for wind).

Tseten is a pretty good mixup of both of his parents. He is, generally speaking, pretty good-humored and smiles a lot. Has piercings. Turned out surprisingly chill, considering his ancestry. Gets lots of tattoos as an adult, including a blue airbending arrow pointing down to his heart. He’s got Ikki’s gray eyes, however. His bison’s name is Stony. Which is a reference to his being an earthbender. Mostly.

Bhuti. If there was anybody going to be taking a photo of herself with sunglasses sitting between two air bison with sunglasses on as well it would be our girl Bhuti. Who would then go off to snowboard off the side of the mountain. Into the air. Ride the air currents all the way down. She gets her arrows at the age of 13 and is the cause of a lot of Baatar’s gray hair, is all I am saying. Her eyes are the same olive color as Baatar’s. (I know those are Tibetan Mastiffs and not air bison but work with me here, people. Did I mention her bison’s name is Sir Wigglesbottom? Because it is.)

Spouses? Sure! I only have face models for a few of them, though.

Amak - Northern Water Tribe, with a brilliant, mischievous sparkle in her eyes that made San fall in love with her pretty much immediately. Her name means playful (like an otter) and that’s exactly how I see her. She’s got blue eyes the exact color of the Finnish sky in summer. 

Jai - I always had Sendhil Ramamurthy in mind for him, from the start. Tall, lanky, dark, Indian. The only difference is that Jai’s eyes are lighter color - a sort of golden brown - and Jai has a perpetual scowl on his face. And hard hat hair.

Sotheara is a Cambodian name that means “pretty flower” (yes, she’s part of the Flower Garden). Our Sotheara is very kind and compassionate - she’s a lawyer with the Republic City equivalent of the ACLU and does pro-bono civil/human rights cases. People often underestimate her because of how sweet she looks. That is a very big mistake.

This Tibetan woman is unidentified, but that penetrating (aka stop with your bullshit) look is one both Goba and Hua would recognize. Yes. Kelden.

A UK-based drag queen well known for his performances to children is fundraising for the funeral costs of a convicted child sex offender he calls his “friend.”

A UK-based drag queen well known for his performances to children is fundraising for the funeral costs of a convicted child sex offender he calls his “friend.”

On January 23, drag queen Aida H. Dee, the stage name of performer Sab Samuel, announced on Facebook that he was fundraising for the funeral costs of Darren Moore, a fellow drag queen.

“Taken unjustly!” Samuel wrote in his post. “I’d like to help give my friend the send off he deserves,” he wrote, providing the link to a GoFundMe campaign for Moore and affixing to the post a photo of Moore and his husband.

But what Samuel neglected to mention was that Moore is a convicted child sex offender. 

Moore, 39, was found dead in full drag costume on the streets of Cardiff City Centre on the morning of 22 January. Previously known as Darren Sewell, Moore was convicted of four counts of rape on a boy under the age of 14 while living in South Wales. As a result, he spent 3 years in a Young Offenders’ Institution.

Following his offense, Moore was also banned from having contact with children. But in 2011, he was caught working with youth as a gymnastics and dance tutor and was convicted of breaching the lifetime order. He was sentenced to a three-year sex offender’s treatment program, a 24-month supervision order, 300 hours of community service, and a six-month curfew with an electronic tag.

Moore changed his name after he married his husband, who is also named Darren.

At the time of his death, Moore had worked as a jeweler and performed drag under the names Crystal Couture, CC Quinn and Dolly. Moore had exhibited his jewellery at RuPaul’s annual Dragcon event in London in 2020. 

As a drag queen, Moore once represented British Airways at a Pride Festival in Brighton in 2018. When his previous convictions came to light, British Airways released a statement saying he did not work for the airline but was brought in by a “third party entertainment agency who supplied a number of people for the event.” They also said they were unaware of his convictions under his previous name.

Also in 2018, audience members walked out of a “Pride Without Prejudice” performance of Moore’s after he made light-hearted comments about child abuser Jimmy Saville.

Investigations are still on-going into Moore’s cause of death, but police have cautioned the public against speculation. Despite this, some members and supporters of the drag queen community have already begun to claim Moore’s death was the result of a “hate crime.”

Upon announcements of his death, the drag queen community, particularly in Cardiff, began mourning the loss of Moore on social media.

Sab Samuel, known as “the story time drag queen” Aida H. Dee, posted on his Facebook page that Moore was “an exuberant human being, taken from the world too early,” adding: “Rest In Power!” 

He also shared that he wore jewelry that Moore made for him, and provided a link to a fundraiser to raise money for his funeral costs. Samuel has been seen wearing the ADHD necklace he references in the post at story time events with children and in official Drag Queen Story Hour UK photos.

Just over two hours later, Samuel posted again in memory of the child sex offender, writing: “Taken unjustly! I’d like to help give my friend the send off he deserves. Please see the link below. This is to support the husband in this horrible horrible time.”

The top comment on the post raised awareness of Moore’s previous convictions saying “Lots of media now reporting on this death but referring to him as a convicted pedophile.” Comments have since been disabled on the page.

Samuel shared the link to a Gofundme for Moore a third time today, which reads:

“Anyone who knew Darren would know how he was never understated in his appearance and costume. His larger than life character and charisma was something that you’ll never forget. We’d like to support Darren and the family and give Darren the biggest send off. If you’re able to and can afford a few quid, please donate what you can to ensure we do him proud.”

The fundraiser has already surpassed the £3,000 (approx. $3,700 USD) target and has raised £4,875 (approx. $6,000 USD) at the time of this writing. One donator left a message on the page reading, “Had the pleasure of meeting Darren last year in Gran Canaria, although very briefly, you could just tell what a beautiful soul he truly had.”

Another donor wrote: “Darren was and will always be a very special person to have known and been a friend with, his out there personality was contagious and he was someone who you couldn’t but love.” 

Samuel has raised concerns on social media in the past for his conduct around children, with some calling his drag costume inappropriate due to its sometimes prominent genital “bulge.”

Despite tremendous backlash, he continues to be routinely booked for “story hour” gigs in libraries and public venues across the United Kingdom.

Just weeks prior to posting in support of Moore, Samuel, who is the founder of Drag Queen Story Hour UK, announced he was set to perform for children at The Tate Gallery in London.

Concerned parents in the nation opposed to Drag Queen Story Hour have established a group called “Art Not Propaganda” and recently stated they have formally complained to The Tate regarding their decision to host the story hour event.

The parents have established a petition which currently has 3,400 signatures, and lists historical posts made by Samuel the group says raises safeguarding concerns.

“Sab Samuel has shared multiple images and comments on social media which raise serious safeguarding red flags. A teacher would be dismissed for the same,” they wrote in the petition. Amongst the infractions are a Twitter post from July of 2020 which Samuels captions “love has no age.” The parents point out that the phrase was popularized by a group which once campaigned to lower the age of sexual consent.

Other groups, such as Safe Schools Alliance UK and the Family Education Trust, have similarly raised concerns about Samuel’s past conduct. On January 13, Samuel responded to the backlash in an interview with Pink News where he blamed the conservative government for enabling “queer hate.”

Just last year, Pink News named Samuel “Leader of the Year” at their annual awards show for his “work with children, helping them fall in love with literature.”

Samuel first rose to infamy after he began touring libraries across the UK to read in his drag persona. He founded the UK branch of Drag Queen Story Hour in 2019, and his enterprise proudly boasts it has been featured by the National Health Service, Greenpeace, Forbes, and more.

In November of 2022, Samuel uploaded a video to Facebook in which he was almost on the verge of tears while recounting his experience hiding his sexuality from a family member’s children.

“I did not want to tell my family member or their children about me being gay because I could have been a danger — I don’t know, it was weird … I think back to that moment, I felt like a disgusting human being. I’d grown up with the idea that being gay was disgusting,” Samuel says. “People wonder why I do drag queen story hours, it’s because of those reasons there. Because I grew up hating who I was. Now, any kids who are queer are not going to grow up with that in their life. I want kids to grow up to love themselves, but to be surrounded by those who love them too.”

As backlash continues to mount against “drag queen story hours” around the world, Samuel’s events have been met with protests.

During one demonstration at Reading Library last year, two protesters managed to interrupt the session while about 25 others continued outside the venue. They were escorted out by staff and the event continued.

There have been similar demonstrations against such events in North America. As a result, antifa militants wielding guns have been seen standing “guard” in front of some venues hosting drag shows for children.

The Whale Plumbs Deep Water

This week i read an article by Iain Marcks, 'Matthew Libatique, ASC, LPS trades stylization for simplicity in Darren Aronofsky’s poignant study of a damaged soul.'

The Whale tells the story of Charlie (played by Brendan Fraser) a reclusive, morbidly obese English teacher attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter.

Here's what stood out to me when I watched the film-

Aspect Ratio- The film is shot in 1:33:1 or 4:3 it makes Charlie feel even bigger than he already is. His body fills most of the frame in a way that feels inescapable. The audience is forced to look at him. I believe this was done to make the audience uncomfortable.

Lighting- Charlie's living room is dimly lit to make him seem even more reclusive. The only lights he in his daily life are his table lamps and Libatique used a lot of well placed bounces and diffused lights to separate the actors from the background.

Camera movements- Charlie is stationary for most scenes in the film. He is either sitting down in his couch of in a wheel chair that he doesn't move around a lot. To make the cinematography more dynamic, Libatique and Arenofsky decide to use camera movements. In most scenes, Charlie is like a sun, with all the other characters orbiting around him. It felt very intimate and personal. This is partly due to the performance of the actors but also because of blocking and space between the characters.

Here's what Arenofsky said when asked about the performance of the actors-

Our approach made the set a bit more intimate, because the only people on set besides the actors were the boom op, someone on the jib arm, someone on the dolly, and me. It made the room very quiet, and I think that helped the performances. It also helped me get extremely close eyelines. The eyelines in a lot of my movies are really, really tight. I think it brings you deeper into an actor’s eyes if you can see both of them at the same time. It’s almost as if they’re looking at you.”

The film was shot during the 2020 Covid pandemic so the cast and crew had to be careful not to stay close to each other. The jib arm was a solution to that problem that gave the actors more flexibility with their performances.
