I'm not the best at writing action into stories but hope you enjoy!
This totally did not go as planned. It was supposed to be a simple run just like all the previous ones you’ve been on with Daryl. You’ve become a team, always knowing the plan and having a backup and another backup just in case.
This situation completely diminished all of your plans.
The town you and Daryl traveled to was cleared out a few days ago, scouted by Glenn and Maggie on their way back from a previous run, but once you rode in on Daryl’s bike, that was not the sight. The town was crawling with walkers on every street.
They heard the bike and immediately came at you both.
“We can’t leave. We need that medicine.” You shout as Daryl moves to drive away.
“It’s not safe. We can always come back.”
“You heard Hershel. Judith is coming down with something and we don’t have any medicine she can take.”
“Shit.” Daryl grunts, driving the bike around the outskirts of the town, trying to find a way to get in.
“There!” You point to an alley with a fenced area, blocked off from the walkers. “We go over the fence and up to the roof and find the best way to the drugstore.” You devise, praying silently this all goes well.
“This better work, Y/N.” Daryl drives into a wooded area, shutting off the bike. You both get off, killing a few walkers who have made their way to you.
“I’ll go first and you follow behind.” You grip the knife in your hand, standing at the edge of some trees, trying to find the best opportunity to run.
“I wonder which will get you killed faster, your loyalty or your stubbornness?” Daryl stands next to you, crossbow ready. “We go together.”
You nod and count to three, the usual signal you both use to calm nerves and gain strength together.
You both run, slashing and killing the walkers on your path. Once you make it to the alley, you immediately climb onto the fence, Daryl at your feet, helping you boost over. Thankfully not many walkers have noticed on the other side.
You take down the couple walkers lingering by your side as Daryl climbs over, a sudden string of curse words catches your attention as you stab the last walker in the head.
“What’s wrong?” You rush to Daryl’s side, watching a dark red trail down his arm from a large gash. “Oh my god, come on we have to get up and then I’ll take a look.”
You have Daryl go first up the ladder to the roof of one of the buildings. Slower than usual from his arm, you feel something grab at your foot as you start climbing.
“Daryl, I’m going to be eaten alive here.” You remark jokingly, kicking the walker in the head.
“I’m going as fast as I can.” You laugh lightly to yourself, trying to find humor in this situation.
Once you both reach the roof, you set your pack at your feet, rifling through for the first aid kit. Daryl tosses his crossbow beside him as he slides down on the brick edge. He takes his vest off and his long sleeve shirt, bearing his chest.
“Don’t worry, I’m just bleeding out here, possibly slowly dying from infection.” Daryl’s sarcastic tone makes you roll your eyes until they widen with panic.
“Daryl.” You flip your pack upside down, all contents falling out. “Why isn’t the first aid here?”
“What?”
“I-it’s not here. I thought it was h-here.” You stand tall, making your way over to him. “I’m sorry, I-I must’ve forgotten to put it back when I p-packed this morning. I don’t know how I forgot it. I’m s-so sorry.” Tears brim your eyes.
“Grab my shirt and tie it around so it’ll keep pressure.” You do as he instructed you, he winces slightly but calls for help through his walkie.
“I didn’t see anything sticking out or else I would’ve told you.” You sit down beside him in defeat.
“It’s not your fault Y/N. I didn’t see it either.” You can see his skin has gone paler from the loss of blood. You take off your jacket and long sleeve, leaving you in a tank top.
You take the long sleeve and use some of your water to wipe some of the blood from his face. He flinches as you gently remove the grim, his muscles settle from the weakness of his body.
“Is this okay?”
“More than okay.”
His words shock you at first. Daryl usually isn’t the flirty or intimate kind of person. It’s sort of comforting and exciting to be one of the few people that Daryl has opened up to.
“You know, I think we make a really good team.” You joke as you finish wiping as much blood and grim from his face and neck as you can.
“Guess you could say that.” You watch his eyes fall closed lightly. You send out a prayer to whatever magical force to have help get here faster.
“You can sleep. I’ll keep watch.”
“I don’t want to.” Another sentence that doesn’t surprise you. Daryl has always been the one to lose sleep to take care of everyone else.
“You need to. Your body is weak right now.” Daryl bites his lip and clenches his fists. “What are you feeling right now?” You kneel in front of him, surveying his anxious stature.
“I don’t like dreaming.” Daryl’s mumbles, eyes holding firm on his lap.
“Nightmares?” You ask, familiar with your own demons that keep you up at night.
“Yes.” He says, quietly.
“I have some of my own too.” You clear your throat, “and it’s not a weakness, Daryl. Yes, it may stop us in our tracks sometimes and leave us wide awake many times but it’s not a reason to be alone.”
“Most of my nightmares are about losing you.” His words almost send you on your back, sending shockwaves of surprise and confusion. Daryl lifts his eyes to meet yours, convection in them. “Why do you think I’ve chosen you every time to go on runs with? I feel helpless whenever you’re not near me. I have to protect you and not in the same way I feel the need to protect Judith or Rick or anyone else at the prison. I’d rip the whole world apart by my bare hands if anything ever happens to you.”
You didn’t think today of all days would be when Daryl himself confesses to you. As if you couldn’t love him more than you already secretly do.
“Look at you, always caring so much for someone else, even when you’re bleeding out.” You smile widely, leaning in closer. “I love you, Daryl Dixon.” Even in his weak state, he softly wraps his uninjured arm around the back of your neck, resting his hand on the nape, pulling you even closer.
“Even at my worst?” His lips ghosting millimeters near yours, breathing heavily.
“Even at your worst.”
