half-baked ramblings on neon's prophecies:

ok, so some people have theorized that neon's prophecies could still be applicable to current events. operating under that assumption, the fate of each spider might be foreshadowed.... here are my thoughts:

“Removed from the calendar is the false hare / with six months gone, the year is lost”

I think if we reach six losses the troupe is officially, cosmically doomed. So far we only have five.

The original fortunes predicted those six deaths- uvo, pack, shalnark, and kortopi’s have already come to pass. In ch 106 chrollo says as much: “Uvo, Hisoka*, Shziuku, Pakunoda, Shalnark… and one more makes half of us.”

Then Phinks replies “So no one else’s fortune predicted death… then it must be either Feitan, me, or Kortopi. We didn’t have enough data to have our fortunes read.”

*only… Hisoka’s was a fake. He never was predicted to die. Meaning that Chrollo and Phinks' initial deduction was wrong - of the three whose fortune’s couldn’t be read, two of them would die. Kortopi is already dead, so that’s one out. Meaning either Feitan or Phinks is (theoretically) slated to die. 

If we take that as “those predicted to die in the fortunes will be the first (or even only) ones to die,” then it stands to reason either Feitan or Phinks will be next.

And now, (as of 406) we've got Nobunaga turning back from tier 2, leaving Feitan and Phinks on their own against the Heil-ly. Those two are powerhouses in their own right, so one would expect them to be safe... but we also know that they've consistently underestimated the Heil-ly, and if Nobunaga isn't there they essentially are going into the hideout blind. Again, both are really, really strong, and much more experienced that almost anyone in the Heil-ly (with the possible exception of Morena ofc) but they're also pretty hot-tempered, and neither strike me as strategists. Nen fights are all about strategy, and I could see a situation in which they end up in a particularly bad matchup... either way, I think it could be significant that they're now the only members who are still connected at the hip.

It’s also interesting that the fortunes specify the Spider will be cut in half, rather than explicitly capping the death toll to six... because technically, the spider has thirteen members, not twelve. Now, I believe it did specify that they would lose half its legs, so the head might no count? Even so, I want to leave the possibility open. Half of thirteen is 6.5, so it's a 50/50 chance between the number 6 and 7. [edit: i'm dumb it did in fact say SIX MONTHS]. Also, if we want to get down to technicalities, one could also make the argument that Hisoka leaving the troupe might not have counted, since he didn't die and therefore we actually need to lose two more spiders… butttt the fortunes did say “cut in half shall your number be,” and whether or not Hisoka remains alive, his desertion of the troupe counts as losing a number either way, so it might not matter. 

Alternatively, if we are once again running on the assumption that the fortunes can somehow extend past their expiration date into the future, than looking at the troupe’s current numbers, we actually only have TEN people- if we’re thinking about their number being cut in half, they could be looking at FIVE more losses. 

And, looking at that metric in isolation, one could even argue that Feitan and Phinks could both die in the near future. Now, here's where my theories go completely off the rails into loose (very loose) speculation territory: if we’re thinking about 5 people dying and 5 living, my predictions are as follows:

I think Illumi and Kalluto have a good shot at making it out alive; from a Doylist angle, they still have a lot of potential in the narrative bc they have things going on outside the troupe, and from a Watsonian perspective they’re less in danger than the other spiders due to their position in the periphery of the hisoka/spider deathgame. I’m gonna put them in the “probably will live" category.

Personal bias is leading me to hope that Nobunaga and Machi will be spared. I think of the remaining Spiders they have the most narrative development, and also show the most potential for development outside the troupe. Like I could see a Nobunaga redemption arc of sorts happening. So I’ll say, looking at this slim chance, I see it fit to add them to the (potential) list of survivors.

Once again, this is loose speculation on my part. I'm just working through my thoughts on what may be and what I want to see. Which leaves us with only two Spiders whose fates are undecided: Chrollo and Franklin. Now Chrollo’s had death flags all over him since his introduction, so upon first glance he seems the obvious choice for the deathlist. But I can’t shake the idea that the cruelest fate for Chrollo would be to watch the Spider die around him while he has to live on. It could also put him in a position similar to Kurapika, with an immense amount of survivor’s guilt and the sense of being “the only one left.” On the one hand, Chrollo seems like he’s putting himself right in the middle of the fray, while Franklin waits things out, potentially sitting duck for Hisoka… but on the other hand, it doesn’t necessarily have to be the clown himself pickiny off the remaining troupe. If Franklin is still on tier five, he could be targeted by the Heil-ly. Plus, the number seven (Franklin's # and the Death Number) was prominently featured in 405.... it's a reach, but if I had to chose I would put Franklin on the “soon to die” list. Which makes it:

In addition to being an ex-Hillel president, a UJA board member, the mother of a Maccabi athlete and a Bronfman Youth Fellow, I’m a contributing writer to multiple Jewish publications and an author of Soviet-Jewish historical fiction. 

I’ve also been a New York City school consultant for 20 years. I help parents navigate the admissions process for not only private schools but the city’s public schools, too. Together, we figure out not just the best school fit for their child but how to maximize their odds of getting in. 

Here in New York City, students are required to apply to public high schools (and public middle schools and kindergartens, too). Much like college applications, the public school admissions process is byzantine, often contradictory and extremely opaque. It can be an enormous source of stress for families — there are tests, grade tiers and ranked-choice strategies to contend with — and it’s not uncommon for kids to be rejected from a public school, sometimes even their zoned, local public school. 

That’s where my role as a consultant comes into play. By factoring in a student’s academic strengths and weaknesses — along with assessing the school’s sports and arts offerings, say, or their support for students with disabilities — I help parents strategize their applications so that their child lands at a school that’s right for them.

Ahead of the city’s public high school application deadline on Dec. 4 — with middle school and kindergarten application deadlines to follow — I’ve noticed a new concern among many of my clients: Parents are now taking into account just how safe a school’s climate is for Jewish students. 

Since the Hamas invasion of Israel on Oct. 7, 2023 — killing some 1,200 people, taking another 251 hostage, and launching the ongoing war that has killed tens of thousands in Gaza — antisemitism has risen sharply in New York City. According to NYPD data, hate crimes targeting Jews have surged over the past year. 

Antisemitism has reared its ugly head in the city’s schools, too. Last November, city officials investigated Hillcrest High School in Queens after students allegedly rioted over a teacher’s participation in a pro-Israel rally. In March, swastika graffiti “rattled” Beacon High School in Hell’s Kitchen, while earlier that month, teachers at Brooklyn’s Origins High School complained of a hostile, antisemitic work environment. “I’ve had students call me a ‘dirty Jew.’ I’ve had students draw swastikas on my desk and bulletin boards,” global history teacher Daneille Kaminsky told CBS News New York. “I’ve had students tell me they wanted to kill my family.”

Such sentiment isn’t exclusive to public schools. In June, the New York Times wrote about parents at the private Elisabeth Irwin High School filing a grievance after their children were taken on a field trip to be “subjected to anti-Israel and anti-American propaganda.” Earlier that month, David Lourie, the head of school at the Upper West Side’s Collegiate School, stepped down after an internal audit found evidence of “religious and cultural bias,” including antisemitism.

But there have been other, less publicized incidents. “On Monday, Oct. 9, my child came to school and found their teacher chanting, ‘Palestine all the way! Israel is going to get what they deserve!’” a Brooklyn mother, whose child attends a public high in Manhattan, told me. “When my child complained to the administration, they were accused of harassing the teacher.”

At my own daughter’s public high school in Harlem, a swastika was drawn on a wall immediately following Oct. 7; another was carved into a desk at the beginning of this academic year. The principal sent out an email encouraging everyone to be tolerant of different points of view, and musing that the person who drew the symbol probably didn’t know what it meant. 

“Did he just ask us to be tolerant of swastikas?” I double-checked with my husband.

My daughter is currently a senior who loves her school and her friends. It is too late for me to consider moving her. 

But, increasingly, I’ve noticed that switching schools has become an imperative for some of my clients. 

“In math, the better performing kids were sitting at one table, and classmates were calling it ‘Jew table,’” a mother whose child was a freshman last year at a highly coveted Manhattan public high school told me. “She was sending me pictures from the bathrooms of stickers that said ‘resistance by all means.’ The school was covered in swastikas and graffiti. When I emailed the principal, the response was, ‘Your daughter is wrong about the swastikas and graffiti, and we already called the police and we are wiping everything every day.’ She finished 9th grade but didn’t want to return to school this year.” 

Such incidents have many Jewish parents on high alert — and confused about what the best options for their children may be. 

Lena, a Brooklyn mom who asked me not to use her last name, told me that when her eldest child applied to middle school two years ago, she was looking for schools that were close to home, had good reputations and plentiful after-school programming. Now, however, as they consider high schools, “I’m absolutely looking at which schools have a reputation for being safe for Jewish students,” she said. 

For some parents, sending their children to a Jewish day school is the obvious solution.

Naomi Levin Schoenkin, whose two children attend Emet Classical Academy, a new Jewish grade 5-12 private school, confessed, “After Oct. 7 it became clear to us that we wanted an education that was more energetic about the contributions of Jews and Jewish values to the world. It became increasingly exhausting to justify that to non-Jewish educators.” 

This isn’t to say that every non-Jewish school, whether public, charter or private, is a hotbed of antisemitism. My sample set is obviously skewed as my clients are a self-selecting group; they come to me because they are unhappy with their schools and looking to make a change. I don’t hear from the happy parents. 

Many schools host very active Jewish student unions and affinity groups for students and families. A swastika may have been inked on a wall and another carved into a desk at my daughter’s school but, in between these incidents, there was also a Cultural Day when students came bearing their ancestral flags. My daughter took many pictures with her friends — each draped in a flag from a different country, like my daughter was in the flag of Israel — with their arms wrapped around each other, making peace signs. Some of her teachers have also facilitated calm, rational and balanced discussions around issues of Israel, as well as the protests taking place only a few blocks away at Columbia University.

For parents hoping to avoid sending their child into a hostile school environment but unsure of what to look for, I recommend first and foremost speaking to other parents — preferably ones you weren’t directed to by the school. For starters, ask your friends and co-workers where their children go to school. Many schools have dedicated Facebook groups that are independent of the administration and can be excellent resources for incoming parents.

There are also social media groups specifically dedicated to the topic of antisemitism in various institutions — including schools — such as NYC Parent Alliance, the NYC Public School Alliance and End Jew Hatred. While these advocacy organizations are by nature on the lookout for antisemitism, parents affiliated with these groups will be able to alert you to a school’s potential red or yellow flags, and can provide perspectives that may differ from the typical open house jargon that promises a vague “respect for all.” 

When considering a school for your child, It is perfectly appropriate to ask for a list of what books students are assigned in English and Social Studies classes. If a school is reluctant to provide it, that’s a red flag. (No, you are not a book banner if you ask what your child will be reading. You are not demanding that the book be withdrawn from other children. You are trying to get an indication of what’s on the curriculum and if it’s right for your child.)

You can also go on the school’s website and see who their recent guest speakers were, the topics of their assemblies and what decorations are hanging in the classrooms. For those willing to go the extra mile, you can check social media accounts: the school’s official ones, and the personal ones of teachers. (No, it’s not stalking if they make their posts publicly available.) There are some NYC teachers — from the high school level all the way down to pre-K — who are proud to share their anti-Israel views. 

NYC families have until Dec. 4 to finalize their public high school application list, until Dec. 20 to submit their public middle school list, and Jan. 24 for kindergarten.

Based on all the concerns about antisemitism I’ve heard over the past year, I strongly suggest parents and students implement at least some of the above suggestions before committing to any school, public or private, for 2025 and beyond.

The Sims 4 New Game Patch (January 14th, 2025)

EA has shared the patch notes for an upcoming game update, scheduled to drop today (January 14th) at 10am PST.

Main Menu Visual Refresh

To start off with, we have a brand-new Main Menu visual refresh! We’ve pushed aside the clutter to make space for your Sims! New Game / Resume Game has moved from right to left, as have a few of the other navigation options. Home, Events and Store can be found at the top, along with the Options panel in the far right. It may take a moment to get used to the New Game / Resume Game new location, I know it took a moment for some of us. A few other changes to mention:

The visual update includes a bit of fresh paint, a little less clutter, with the desire to keep information clear and discoverable for you!

The Sims in the center are your last played household Sims, all of them!

North Korean hackers have stolen the equivalent of billions of dollars in recent years and the nation is seeking to amass even greater wealth through illicit means, experts told DW.

Hackers belonging to the Lazarus Group — a notorious North Korean crypto theft ring — stole a record $1.5 billion (some €1.37 billion) in digital tokens from Dubai-based cryptocurrency exchange ByBit in late February. The company said the hackers had accessed its digital wallet for Ethereum, the second-largest electronic currency after Bitcoin.

Binance News, a new platform operated by cryptocurrency exchange firm Binance, reported last month that North Korea now has some 13,562 Bitcoins, the equivalent of $1.14 billion. Bitcoin is the world's oldest and best known cryptocurrency, often compared with gold due to its alleged resistance to inflation. Only the US and Great Britain have greater reserves of the currency, Binance News said, citing crypto data provider Arkham Intelligence.

"Let's not mince words — [North Korea] achieved this through theft," Aditya Das, an analyst at cryptocurrency research firm Brave New Coin in Auckland, New Zealand, told DW.

"Global policing agencies like the FBI have publicly warned that North Korean state-sponsored hackers are behind numerous attacks on cryptocurrency platforms," he added.

Hackers use social engineering against crypto firms

Despite those warnings, however, crypto firms are still being robbed and North Korean hackers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, the analyst said.

"North Korea employs a wide range of cyberattack techniques, but they've become especially known for their skill in social engineering," said Das.

"Many of their operations involve infiltrating employee hardware, then using that access to breach internal systems or lay traps from the inside."

The hacker's primary targets are crypto startups, exchanges and decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms due to their "often under-developed security protocols," he said.

Recovery of funds 'extremely rare'

Elite North Korean hackers tend to take their time when infiltrating a legitimate global organization, often by impersonating venture capitalists, recruiters or remote IT workers to build up trust and breach firms' defenses.

"One group, Sapphire Sleet, lures victims into downloading malware disguised as job applications, meeting tools or diagnostic software — essentially turning victims into their own attack vectors," Das said.

Once crypto has been stolen, Das says recovery is "extremely rare." Cryptocurrency systems are designed to make transactions irreversible and striking back against North Korean operatives "is not a viable option because these are nation-state actors with top-tier cyber defenses."

Kim Jong Un's regime 'saved' by cryptocurrency theft

Park Jung-won, a professor of law at Dankook University, said North Korea previously relied on risky transactions — such as smuggling narcotics and counterfeit goods or supplying military instructors to African nations — to earn illicit funds.

The legal expert says the advent of cryptocurrency "has been a huge opportunity" for dictator Kim Jong Un.

"It is probably fair to say that given the way the world was cracking down on Pyongyang's smuggling efforts, crypto has saved the regime," Park told DW. "Without it, they would have been completely without funds. They know that and they have invested heavily in training the best hackers and getting them up to a very high level of skill."

"The money that they are stealing is going straight to the government and the assumption is that it is being spent on weapons and greater military technology as well as the Kim family," according to Park.

North Korea immune to international pressure

Park does not believe that outside pressure would force North Korea to end hacking attacks.

"For Kim, the survival of his dynasty is the most important priority," the law professor said.

"They have become accustomed to this source of revenue, even if it is illegal, and they will not change," he added. "There is no reason for them to suddenly start abiding by international law and there is no way to apply more pressure."

Das agrees there are few tools available to influence North Korea. He says companies need to do everything in their power to avoid becoming the next victim.

"Best practices like secure-by-design smart contracts, constant internal verification and social engineering awareness are essential if the industry wants to stay ahead," he said.

Crypto firms need universal security standards

There's growing momentum for sector-wide information sharing which would help crypto firms detect North Korean tactics and avert attacks, but Das warns that crypto remains "fragmented" because there is no universal security standard. Also, North Korean hackers are good at turning security tools against their users, according to the analyst.

"In the Bybit case, the attackers exploited Safe, a multi-signature wallet system meant to enhance security. Ironically, this added security layer became the very exploit they used," he said.

 And in practice, Das added, "some firms still treat security as an afterthought."

"From my experience, teams often prioritize shipping fast over building secure systems and until that changes, the space will remain vulnerable," Das said.

Four months earlier 

“I should have known that job was cursed the moment I got the file,” Zahra muttered to herself, lighting her next cigarette before the previous one even had a chance to cool off. The thick smoke surrounded her like armor. Her back pressed to the wall behind the arcade, legs stretched out.

She flicked the lighter and stared at the flame. Some insects buzzed nearby, drawn by the light. Just like her, except someone dangled a puzzle in front of her—and she’d fallen for it, hook, line, and sinker.

It happened last spring. She had just clicked “Submit” on her Hartfeld application and was already regretting it. Not because she thought she’d be rejected—please. But because the process was insultingly normal. No secret handshake, no cryptographic problem to solve—just deadlines, boring forms, and a polite automated email saying, “Thank you for your interest in Hartfeld University. We will review your application shortly.”  She rolled her eyes so hard she could see the back of her head.

So, when someone with a Hartfeld email address sent her an email with a cryptic subject “TIER IV RECON PHASE 01” and a single file attached, she didn’t think it was a scam. She thought: finally.

And then, when she opened the file, she let out a snort. Just a database dump, with tables like ‘students,’ ‘admissions,’ ‘classes,’ and ‘grades.’ She scrolled through the records half-annoyed, half-disappointed. What was the task? Find an average GPA from last year? Get the list of people who failed calculus twice? It was so below her level it felt like an insult.

She clicked back to the email to double-check. But besides the file, it was completely empty.

Now that was interesting.

She went back to the student list. It wasn’t big, no more than 1500 records. Too low to be a production dump. And they wouldn’t be that stupid, anyway. Privacy protection and all—not that she couldn’t access the real Hartfeld database within an hour, if she wanted to.

And then it caught her eye—the file size was too large for the number of records. Not much, but enough to raise her eyebrows.

She quickly wrote a script to compare the original with a fresh export she made herself, and there it was: random bytes stuck at the end of file. Mostly trash, but not all. Inside the noise, there was a message:

One of them is not supposed to be there.

Jackpot, she grinned.

A few hours later, she was elbows deep in the darknet mirrors of government databases, with a half-empty energy drink and a cold bowl of instant ramen on her desk. The search wasn’t that hard. There was only one student with a future acceptance date and grades for courses that hadn’t even started yet. 

Whoever added the record hadn’t even tried to hide it. First name only, “42” where the last name should be, and a birthdate of January 1st. Cute, she thought. Real subtle.

But there was a Social Security number. And unlike the rest of the generated data, this number was real.

They— she , Zahra corrected herself, checking the results—had three birth records, each filled in a different state. It could have been a bureaucratic glitch or a forgery.

But then she found two death certificates. Same number, same name, exact same date—

On a summer day, three years in the future.

She sat back and blinked twice as if hoping that was a prank. But the date didn’t change. She shrugged, clicked back to the original email, and attached the scans to the reply just to see what happened.

Two weeks later, she got a fancy admission letter from Hartfeld. And a second, smaller envelope tucked behind it. Inside was just a photo. No explanations. Just a few words scribbled on the back: “ Keep an eye on her.”

“Challenge accepted,” she murmured to herself, cracking her knuckles.

The Hartfeld database was in front of her like an opened book. And sure enough, there she was—the same ID as in the dump. Zahra copied the string, pulled up her own, and switched to the dorm assignments table. A few keystrokes. One command, and they’re roommates now.

Then she leaned back and smiled.
