The un(fair) standards for beauty

Growing up in the Indian subcontinent, one grows up believing that beauty is directly proportional to the color of the skin. This is probably a hangover from the days of the राज when the colonizers looked down upon the natives and treated them as a lesser race.

Flash back to the pre colonization age and one dives into ballads and poetry on the dusky हूर(fairies) of the east who have molten gold pools for eyes and petals for lips..and these are pretty consistent across all languages and parts of the subcontinent.

So how did we go from worshipping the glistening साँवली skin to idolizing the pale light skin that the Caucasians themselves try to mask with bronzers, sunbathing and tanning beds? How did we transition from ubtans to Fair and Lovely(that a company actually made millions with this brand name mystifies me)

This too in a land where barring one, even all Gods are depicted as dark skinned yet beautiful! Nearly all the leading men and ladies of our religious/social literature are dark skinned yet heroic and powerful. Yet, if statistics are to be believed, colorism these days has a pervasive impact on job and marriage opportunities. Nothing could be more unfair!

This brings to mind a beautiful song that is a part of our classical music legacy and is from the erstwhile NWFP of Sindh (now in Pakistan). Genre Multani Kafi and Raag Sindh Bhairavi, it stands out as a unique song pining for a dark skinned lover who had travelled deserts , seas and mountains away but is etched on the heart.

साँवल मोड मुहारा is गीत, ख़याल and इब्तिदा rolled up nice and tight

Beautiful rendition by Ustad Salamat Ali Khan in his unique style has graced many mehfils and baithaks . A rather modern version by the very talented Zeeshan Ali brings home the point that this बंदिश is timless and बेमिसाल.

The रूह of Sufi Ghulam Farid Sahab continues to distill the magic of music..centuries after his रुखसती (departure) from the world and this is the true magic of मौसीकी़(music)
