Into the Dataverse w/ James Oleinik
In this episode, we break down the newest phrase to come out of the Power Platform this year with James Oleinik, Director of Project Management with Microsoft. His team owns the experience for PowerApps, and he joins us to define Dataverse and explain how it is integrated to create a seamless data transfer across all Microsoft products. Using simple language, he provides insight on the low code platform that provides the scaffolding to connect, import, and integrate a wide variety of a company’s data. According to James, all data is Dataverse data, and anyone can be a low code developer!
James clarifies that Dataverse is not SQL and could never be just storage. Instead, it is the framework, management and logic you need to create structured access to your data estate and the ability to build much-needed apps on top of it.
Don’t worry if you aren’t up on the lingo, Host Rob Collie breaks it down to Power BI comparisons before we learn about exciting developments in Virtual tables and Power Effects. You heard it first on Raw Data by P3 Adaptive, the Excel language and the VBA surface of yesterday is the Dataverse Table Power Effects and Power Apps of tomorrow.
Join us today as we go into the Dataverse and beyond!

What's New in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central
Wave 1 for Business Central was released on April 1, 2021. This means that various new functionalities have become available. Functionalities range from very technical changes to new parts that every user notices at the front. Microsoft will publish these new functionalities in a release document. We have bundled and described the most interesting parts below.
Add variant codes to the header of a production order
Does your organization produce and/or sell items in various colours, sizes or, for example, materials? Now you often create an item number for each item variant. This is no longer necessary with this functionality. You can now place multiple variants under the same article number.
Related to this extension is that you can now also define production BOMs and routes for different variants and also specify the storage locations. Despite the value of this extension, there is still a small caveat. Production BOMs and routes are not (yet) included in the planning engine. So you can't adjust your planning to it yet, but you can use the functionality in planning proposals or, for example, order planning.
How do you add the features?
On the Production order page, add the Variant code field.
On the SKU page, add the Production BOM and Production Routing fields.
Send all attached files as attachments
Some functionalities were surprisingly not available before on Business Central. This is one of them. You can now attach all documents attached to a process to an email. This saves time, because you no longer have to email per document or first make exports to add them to an email. Simple functionality, very nice for those who deal with this on a daily basis.
Virtual tables
Think of Virtual Tables as a reflection of a set of tables from Business Central that are available in the Power Platform (Dataverse) and Customer Engagement (CRM) to read data, but also to write data to. This ensures that you can enter data into Business Central from your CRM system. This is also processed directly within BC. So suppose you have a Dataverse table with the name 'Account' and a BC table with the name 'SalesOrders', then you can create a relationship between these two tables via virtual tables. This is how you display data from 'SalesOrders' on an 'Account' form.
The functionality is very powerful and reinforces the platform idea even more. Up front, it's easier to use the same terms and processes in several separate programs.
