‘Calm Down’ – Daytes’ Masterclass in Storytelling and Genre-Blending Daytes welcomes 2025 with an impressive new release, “Calm Down” a sophisticated fusion of Afrobeat rhythms with elements of UK rap, R&B, and hip-hop. The London-based artist crafts a deeply personal yet universally relatable narrative, delving into the complexities of a passing romance. His storytelling abilities are on full display as he explores the emotional tug-of-war of uncertain feelings, creating moments that will resonate with anyone who's navigated similar waters. The track's production is a masterclass in balance, featuring an infectious Afrobeat foundation layered with dynamic percussion and rich, soulful elements. The collaborative efforts of producer Brizy Beatz and mixer Yani elevate “Calm Down” to exceptional production standards, setting a new benchmark in the genre. While echoes of influences like J Hus, Burna Boy, and Dave can be heard in Daytes' work, his distinctive voice shines through. He demonstrates a rare ability to weave intimate storytelling with captivating melodies, creating a track that feels both commercially accessible and genuinely authentic. “Calm Down” represents Daytes at his creative zenith, pushing beyond his established boundaries and suggesting an exciting trajectory for his artistry. If this single is a preview of what's to come in 2025, his audience has much to look forward to. I'm wheezing over the idea of Optimus or Ratchet (or both I could take both-) leaving little trinkets and small fish for Y/N, but Y/N not knowing a thing about mermaid courting rituals either A) thinks the mermaid boys are just being helpful neighbours and Y/N is all like "Aw they're so sweet! ^^" and has no idea they're trying to woo her OR...they're just stupid oblivious. Like they wake up one morning and find the seashells and fish are are like "Huh well that's super convenient...All well (picks up the fish and seashells)" meanwhile OP/Ratchet/both of them are celebrating behind a big rock cuz yay the little human accepted their proposal gift!! The merformers trying to propose to Y/N with pretty trinkets they find gives me the same vibes of when kids pretend to "propose" with a haribo ring sweetie XD
Oblivious and down bad is honestly one of my favorite character dynamics fr fr.
Haribo ring sweetie oh noooo. But yeah, it kinda has that vibe. It gets really funny once the size of the "ring" starts to increase tho.
At first, you get small fish and shells, but since you accept them without clearly acknowledging your mer as a mate, a competition slowly starts over who can bring you a better gift. One day, you find a massive conch next to your bed, and two days later, a shark presented as an engagement ring.
Honestly, I can totally see the mers being just as confused by our courting customs. Like, wait humans care about appearances more than sparks and the quality of the gifts? What even is this 'dayt ing'? Humans don’t have designated interfacing caves?
And yet… they still deeply love their human partner, even if we’re a little weird in their optics.

Personal question meme: #2 😂
2. When's the last time you went on a date?
For anyone else reading, that question is from my real-life, living-together, civilly-partnered partner. And in theory I don't think we ever made it a monogamous relationship but in practice I'm far too busy and tired to date anyone else. Polysaturated at 1.
I have been on two very awkward meal dates in my life, both at age 20, both with no second date. Thus ends my formal dating history. You and I, we've never had a "date" but sometimes we have a "Day ouT" or "DayT", which suits us much better.
Let me check the calendar, just like you could because it's the same calendar. Ah, I knew there was something recent - you drove me to the wool fair, then you went on errands while I looked round, then we had lunch at our new default cafe and I brought out the little wooden bird I got for you at the wool fair (apparently woodcarvers have a symbiotic relationship with fibre artists), then we looked round the fair together and then we went home.
It was a very nice DayT!

pairing// matthew gray gubler and reader || wc// 433
summary// brunch and... something idk
Tumblr media
"Wow, that was fast."
You hand your phone over to Matt, cutting into the egg benedict to take a bite.
"I'm on a date?"
"Is thhis a dayte?" You close your mouth to chew, putting the fork down to take back your phone.
"Am I paying?"
"No." You swallow, huffing. "We're splitting."
"I can pay." He offers.
"Denied." You sip on the water, blinking as you scroll through your phone. "If I let you pay, then this tethers dangerously close to date territory, and I'd like to avoid that."
"You act like I don't see what kind of insanity you're tweeting on the internet."
"That's called a moment of weakness. My fault for wanting to jump your bones when I see specific photos. I can act normal in real life, but every day is ovulation week when I'm chronically online." You pause. "That didn't make sense"
"But I understood it anyway. I'm surprised you wouldn't actually do anything."
"I wouldn't. I'm not a monster." You mumble, putting your phone back down. "Did you watch the Grammys?"
"I heard like 90% of it through your phone last night in bed."
"Shhhhhh." You grumble. "Oh, hush. I had earbuds on."
"Volume on max."
"You should've just sat up and watched with me." You mumble.
"If I dragged an arm over your waist at like 11pm to turn you around I think you'd—"
"jump your bones, yeah, yeah. No joke on that one." You tilt your head. "Not eating?"
"Too busy chatting with you." He hums, digging in as the two of you go quiet. You finish first, sliding out a camera from your bag to snap a photo of Matt, a tilt of his head mid-bite to cooperate with you for a nice photo. You get a good laugh out of it, and he beams at you. "Do I look good?"
"You always look good." You stab at the hashbrowns on your plate, looking through the camera to stare at the photo of Matt.
In the back, the click of a shutter goes off as you blink at Matt's camera.
"Hey!"
"If I get one, you get one." He hums. "Class is in an hour."
"Shit." You mumble, checking the metro schedule. "Oh, okay. I can make it on time if I catch the one at 30."
"I'll send you to class?" Matt wipes his mouth. "I'm done."
"And get accused of an actual date?"
"Oh, god forbid I be friends with someone." He raises a brow.
"Will you defend me to hell and back on twitter?"
"Oh, you know I will."
"Alright. Let's go."
