Website Update – May 2019
🔝 New Top 50 Lists
One of the most popular areas of the website is the Top 50 Lists. I am pleased to announce a few additions. You can now view US and Global versions of each list, and there is a new list of Top 50 Museums and Galleries! It’s a great place to find inspiration for your own lists and see what is popular in the community.
↕️ Reordering Your Done List
By popular request, you can now reorder your Done list independently of the ordering of goals on other lists. Visit your Done list page and hit the Reorder List button. Plus members can also group items in their Done list.
📦 Archived Lists
Another of our most requested features - you can now archive a list. This will help make maintaining your lists easier. An archived list will not show up on your main profile page or list selector menus. But you can still add and update items on your archived lists. Available to all members, but Plus users have unlimited archived lists. Head over to your Manage page to get started.

In Which a Long-Awaited Museum of Modern Art Reopens
Ever since I took my last humanities class, I’ve wanted to see some of the pieces that I studied. I finally got that opportunity a few days ago thanks to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. We saw pieces from big names like Frida Kahlo, Henri Matisse, George Braque, Andy Warhol, and Rene Magritte. It was everything I had wanted it to be. I even saw some paintings from the old powerpoints that I studied from in order to pass the final exam and used as examples for my final essay, “Why Modern Art is More than Lines and Circles on a Canvas.” Allow me to elaborate on 6 superlative pieces I found in the museum:

This painting is a great example of what I love about modern art – its ambiguity and ability to be interpreted many different ways. Is the figure hopeful? Do they feel a longing for the world on the other side of the river? Or is the figure feeling isolated by the distance between himself and the carousel of the world going on outside, ignorant to his grief? That’s up to you! It can even be different things to you at different times.

Calder’s fantastic. His mobiles deliver that classic modern art gut feeling of pure shape, line, and color, with the twist that the piece is in constant motion. It’s like watching a river, or a jazz musician’s solo. You’re always seeing something new unfolding right in front of your eyes. It’s always improvising, always in flux. It’s ephemeral and motion and music and modern life all captured into one piece. Gah. I’m still geeking out about it.

Somehow I like this better than his original Whaaam! done back in the ‘60s. It’s from a different point of view this time. You can’t see the airplane’s nationality, either. And it’s like he’s drawing back the curtain and showing you that all print is just a bunch of dots close up. Very, very pretty dots.

You know, sometimes a tie feels exactly like that, a snake squeezing the life right outta you. Especially if you’re a missionary walking on the baking sheets that are the sidewalks of Santiago, Chile in the summer.

The actual work done by the artist is only a set of instructions. LeWitt gives the museum curators some vague directions on how to put the crayon lines on the grid, and the rest is up to the museum to interpret and recreate. So every time this piece changes hands, it’s technically being made anew all over again. Gives the piece a sort of mystery and a life of its own.

Is this a statement about our bodies being an amalgamation of atoms? Or maybe it’s about our personalities? Or society / humanity at large? That’s up to you to decide! Aaarrrrrtttt!
Shout outs to Uncle Todd, Aunt Rebecca, Joanna, and my awesome wife for helping make this trip happen. If you ever go to San Francisco, I’d recommend you visit this place. It’s been closed for such a long time and it’s awesome that it’s finally open again for us to enjoy.

Late in the year, I discovered something really cool. An alternative to resolutions:101 intentions/goals in 1001 days! I found out about it through @sunshineandstationery and it comes from @dayzeroproject *** The idea is that you set 101 things you want to do for the next 1001 days as opposed to making yearly resolutions. I would say it’s an in between of resolutions and a bucket list. Then when you finish, you make another one. *** Some of these are small to dos and some are 1 off events. But having this time frame of 2.5 years makes it feel super fun and doable! I’m more than excited to get started. Join me and make things happen for you too! Registration is free 😘 https://www.instagram.com/p/CJhBu-rhZtK/?igshid=1mrydm4j0pw1h

Day Zero Project: Chipping away at goals
Now on the blog: Day Zero Project: Chipping away at goals #DayZero #DayZeroProject #Goals #Organizingemail
I’m slowly trying to chip away at some of my Day Zero goals. I’m finding it’s not too easy as I have a lot of different things.
What I probably have to do is commit to one or two things at a time, and see if I can just get through a few things at a time, rather than just peeking in sometimes and seeing what I may have already accomplished.
It’s time to tackle two significant items.

About Me
I’m currently sitting in a hotel next my sleeping pup and watching probably the worst reality TV show I’ve ever seen. It’s spring break. I’m in my 4th year of grad school after about a decade of kicking around not doing a lot. I have about 2 years left of PhD student life, and I want to start adulting a little bit more than I have in the previous 36 years. I want to do all the cliche things. Pay off debt, eat healthier, save money, lose weight, go to Cuba... I’m starting by making a list of a bunch of things that I want to do on the DayZeroProject. 101 things in 1001 days. I’ve tried this before and not really followed through, which is pretty much my MO in most things. I don’t know why I think this time will be different, but I hope it will. The time goes just past when I will hopefully be finishing with school and moving into whatever the next phase of my life is and I want to use that time to get shit together. The list is here... https://dayzeroproject.com/user/davetheot/list/149006 I’m going to write about the things I’m doing to make progress on the list here when I remember.

11, 15, 17, 46 😘
11. I am old, I don’t really listen to things as they come out. But I did find myself listening to different/new artists due to Spotify and people making playlists. Vance Joy, The Head and the Heart, Imagine Dragons, Arcade Fire, Lizo, Fleet Foxes, so many.
15. Criminal Minds! I have been in the fandom less than a year! It has taken over my life.
17. I quit one of my jobs and my husband started a new one? (Also this blog is kind of a big deal to me.)
46. I tend to spread out goals/ resolutions, there is a site called the dayzeroproject and I like using them for ideas/ inspiration/ lists.
Thanks Cassie!!!

My Second Day Zero Project List!
1001 #dayzero #1001 The Mission: Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days. Beginning: November 1, 2011 End Date: July 29, 2014 The Criteria: Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part). Why 1001 Days? Many people have created lists in the past - frequently simple goals such as New Year’s resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organizing and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.

Website Update − January 2017
This month sees the roll out of a bunch of exciting new updates including a redesigned profile page, updates to notes, and a new badges feature.
New layout on user profile page: A sidebar shows your details and the main content shows alongside it.
New users have a Getting Started section that helps them get onboard.
You can now add links to other social media sites such as Instagram, Snapchat etc.
New badges section. There are just a few to start with but more will be added soon. Check your profile - you may already have earned some!
When you enter goals and see suggestions you like, you can use the up and down arrow keys to select and add them.
It is now easier to see an archive of your notes. More notes features are coming soon.
A new link in the top navigation bar of the page also lets you see all the goals you have liked in a new page.
The list management screen has been rewritten and now handles dates and changes better.
Better support for users with larger screens.
You can use emoji characters in your goals, list names, and bio.
You can now add a note that is not linked to goal. Great for when you want to give a general progress update.
Mobile Apps Update: Some good progress has been made on the mobile apps in the last few months. It has been difficult balancing all the priorities but there is some good momentum now to get these released. Much of the reason it has taken so long is that the technology is changing at such a fast pace and it is difficult to make the right decisions on how best to proceed. The first release will likely be for iOS but if the feedback is promising, then Android will follow close behind. It will initially have basic functionality to manage your own lists, and over time more social features will be added in. I look forward to updating you on progress as the launch date gets closer!
Thanks for all your feedback and encouragement. A big thanks to all the Plus members who make it possible to keep growing and improving the site. As always, you can help out by taking a couple of minutes to add your thoughts on the feedback page. Hint: It is one of the easiest ways to earn badge ;)
Best wishes! Michael
