This First Thursday, September 5th, at D.C.’s Tavern we will not just have one guest, but TWO. Three heads are always better than one, right? It's the King Ghidorah of DJ sets. There may be a common theme throughout but I doubt it, but that is what makes life interesting. TomDash was known for his DotDash party in Brooklyn and is now a regular on WFMU. He describes DotDash Radio with TomDash as, "DIY music for the spirit; bummer jams for happy people; terrestrial music for space travelers; punchy, post-punk jitters, synth drones for the mindful; fuzz-drenched, basement rock to sooth the soul…" CollectorScum a.k.a. Justin Frohwirth has regularly spent the night at D.C.'s playing the rarest and best Punk rock 7-inches the walls have ever absorbed. His collection is one of the most focused and impressive I have ever seen and we are lucky when he takes them out of his studio. BUT, he is considering a major life change, so let's see how things play out. I will say it every time, the patrons of D.C.'s are easily and without a doubt the most patient and tolerant audience. I have played records from every section of my collection and barely a complaint. See you there! Partners In Crime - “No Big Deal” (Mutha Records cat. MUTHA 026) Guitars with a Ramones / Heartbreakers attack, pounding drums and a snotty toned vocalist with attitude for days are what Partners In Crime are. Somehow this came out in 1984. It is almost like they didn’t pay any attention to the years between 1977 and 1984 jumping right to Punk from Hard Rock. Oh yeah, and from the photo on the cover you would think they were a Metal band. The song titles are (in order); “I Hate Your Guts,” “I Wanna Drive You,” “Cram It” “N.B.D. (No Big Deal),” “Trash,” and of course the closer is, “You Suck.” So, fuck you and your pussy-ass band…YOU SUCK! Did I mention that the snotty toned vocalist was a big haired Jersey girl? So again, fuck you, you phony tough-guy. This thing is AMAZING! I only heard about this last week and found a copy this weekend at Spin Me Round Records. Picked up a few other great things there too, thank you. I want everyone I know who doesn’t know this, to hear it. I just may play every track. Come by this upcoming First Thursday, February 7, at D.C.’s Tavern and hear this and many, many more. For this First Thursday, June 7 at D.C.’s Tavern in Hoboken New Jersey, I will be bringing many of the records that I have purchased from Stan’s Square Records over the years or was given to me by Stan. As I have said before, I was a regular but as I look back I should have been far more regular. I only purchased 7-inches during the recent digs. Those three days, at the shop, also told me that as much as I loved sitting with Stan, listening to his stories, and shooting the shit I should have set aside some time for digging. I shouldn’t have been as amazed as I was, but what was in, under, behind, and between the bins, was impressive. There were records every where. In the last two hours of Sunday’s dig I asked Justin and Jeff, “Where haven’t you seen people spend much time?” (Keep in mind every record was moved around by Justin and Jeff so Justin could do his thing and sort the entire store.) They said, “In front of the counter.” So dig I did, and walked away with another 25 records. I even witnessed a very old, very dedicated digger, pass out, bleed from his mouth and when rested… he immediately began flipping records! It was scary, crazy and all I could think was, yeah, I’d probably do the same thing. Come check out my finds, have a drink, and spend a little time with Stan. #stanssquarerecords #catamountrecords #stankrause #catamount #jerseycity #doowop #soul #randb #hiphop #funk #vinyl #vinylrules @primitivesoundsystem #primitivesoundsystem #vinyljunkie #vinyl45s #recordcollection #recordcollection @collectorscum @fleamarketfunk @pat_byrne @dcstavern #dcstavern #FirstThursdays #AllVinylAllTheTime #AllVinylAsAlways

Hello Y’all! For this LAST First Thursday, February 6 at D.C.’s Tavern I have filled the boxes with my favorite 7-inches. I don’t think there will be many surprises. Les McCann & Eddie Harris - “Compared To What” b/w “Generation Gap” (Atlantic cat. SD 7-1537) I have no idea when I first heard “Compared To What,” but it left an indelible mark on my soul…that I know. I immediately became obsessed. I bought every version of the LP I came across until I found what I thought was a perfect copy. I bought copies of the 7-inch that there was an uncensored version out there. A soon as I discovered that this version of the 7-inch existed the obsession went into overload. I found this about ten years ago and have played this record more than any other at my First Thursdays. Les McCann and Eddie Harris were at the Montreux Jazz Festival but had never played together. “So hey, what do you say fellas? Wanna play some music we have never rehearsed in front of a packed audience at one of the best known Jazz gatherings in the world? Sure, why the fuck not? It’s all improvisation anyway?” Despite the fact that they never played together they produced one of the most enduring sessions ever. Gene McDaniels’ socially aware compositions really began with “Compared To What.” Just a couple of years after this he recorded what is one of the greatest pieces of social commentary, Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse. One night I played side one in its entirety…do you miss yet Hoboken? This is it folks, this is the last First Thursday. Over the years I have bellied up to the tables with some of the greatest and others that just made me laugh. At midnight I always have my first Guinness, otherwise I won’t make it to closing. Hello, I must be going, I cannot stay, I came to say, I must be going. I’m glad I came. But just the same. I must be going, la-la! THIS FIRST THURSDAY! Sorry, let me start that again…THE LAST FIRST THURSDAY! This First Thursday, February 6, at D.C.’s Tavern in Hoboken, NJ will be the last First Thursday at D.C’s Tavern. Seventeen years of torturing, pleasing, annoying, satisfying, and hopefully entertaining the cultured folks at one of Hoboken’s only real bars left… has come to an end. I have played whatever the fuck I wanted and have barely ever been confronted about it. The meat on the stools have weathered No Wave, Noise, Free Jazz, and 45s at 33. This month I will be playing all my favorites on 45 for the last time in this smelly hole. I try never to be too nostalgic but D.C.’s has been one of the most incredible venues for me to play records, sell, records, and drink with friends, enemies and strangers alike. I have seen many characters come and go and some have left us for good. We will remember them all and close out the night with screams of, “BOB GAUL!" So if you have ever said, “I really want to come by.” Well, you missed it. You only had seventeen years to do it. Bob Seger and the Last Heard - "Sock It To Me Santa" b/w "Florida Time" (Cameo cat. C-444 (Promotional Not For Sale)) Lazy Cowgirls - “Sock It To Me Santa” b/w “Goddamn Bottle” (Bomp! cat. BMP 137) OK, this is up there with James Brown's "Soulful Christmas," as one of the greatest Christmas songs ever. The Lazy Cowgirls do a great goddamn version and the picture sleeve is incredible. The sleeve also gives James Brown a run for his money on best Christmas record sleeve. But, this, Bob Seger and the Last Heard, OG version is a fucking monster. The sweet dialogue intro is too funny as Seger bursts in. Of course it is based on The Godfather's "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" and Seger does such a good job that I assume James hated him for it. He screeches through the vocals as he will do and the back-ups are smiley and sweet to keep you in the Christmas spirit. "Christmas comes just won't be a drag, Santa's got a brand new bag!”Hear this and many more Christmas records this First Thursday, December 7th at D.C.’s Tavern. Plus, of course, the usual all over the map run of musical genres you have grown to love... or hate. This First Thursday, December 5th, at D.C.’s Tavern in Hoboken, NJ from 9PM to 1AM I will be sharing joyful sounds from my overflowing boxes, stuffed with new records, and a handful of seasonal favorites. I never thought I’d see an OG copy, let alone, own one, but via the man with the best juju in the game, @CollectorScum, I now do. Soul Excitement was out of Newark, New Jersey where some members attended Arts High. Arts High shared a space with Newark School of Fine Arts, one of the schools I attended after high school. PLUS! This is one of the toughest grooves ever put to record despite it’s incredibly playful intro. All of these things combined are the reason I have been hopelessly obsessed with this record and never satisfied with the fact that I would likely never find one. In 2006, Kay-Dee Records made me extremely happy when they re-issued it. It has been a regular spin since. The uniqueness of the track is evident from its first notes. These kids were on a trip and they were more than happy to take us a long for the ride. “Stay Together,” is a “message” song similar to the concepts of Sly and the Family Stone, Gene McDaniels, etc. Also, the damn thing is stone mint so it plays clean, and LOUD! I wasn’t kidding when I said my boxes are overstuffed with new toys. Brian Daly and his elves pour liquids into to cups… and that shit will get you high! So come on by, enjoy the sounds, the booze (or whatever your poison is) and maybe an interesting conversation. See you there…HO HO HO-boken! #primitivesoundsystem #vinylrules #vinyljunkie #vinyl45s #RareRecords #recordcollection #recordcollector @dcstavern #dcstavern @dalespix @demondrums @tfool #FirstThursday #FirstThursdays #Funk #Soul #HardRock #Punk #Instrumentals #ChristmasMusic #ChristmasRecords #SoulExcitement #PinkDolphinRecords #NewarkNJ #SoulExcitementStayTogether #ArtsHighNewark @kaydeerecords #kaydeerecords https://www.instagram.com/p/B5ojWDapwbe/?igshid=16jzgrui94cfc

This First Thursday we get to test out the new speaker set-up at D.C.’s Tavern. Note to self, if you don’t want to hear the music from a bar or club… don’t buy your condo next to one. That’s as much as I am going to say because the circumstances should be obvious to anyone reading this…unless you have purchased your condo next to a bar and felt it was OK to complain about the sound, despite even those summoned to the space noting that the music was never too loud or loud at all because then you most likely can’t comprehend why this would be annoying to everyone except maybe the person you have convinced to spend the rest of your complaining, miserable existence with. DONE. Sadly, on July 22nd, we have lost one of the greatest musical talents, Mr Art Neville, who was also known as Poppa Funk for very good reason. As one fourth of The Meters and one fifth of the Neville Brothers he helped create the sound of Funk. It is almost impossible to choose a Meters song when DJing but I am drawn to “People Say,” so often that I have to stop myself from playing it every time. If you like Funk and Punk please join us for a lot of both. The Normals - “Almost Ready” b/w “Hardcore” (Lectric Eye Records cat. EYE 2 (VPMF 5011) This First Thursday, June 6, at D.C.’s Tavern in Hoboken will be a run of genres set from Punk to Funk and wherever else we can go. I love doing sets like this because if you don’t like what you hear, just wait a few minutes for something different. From the very first time I heard this amazing blast of melodic, Damned inspired, Punk I thought these guys were from the UK. Every time I heard this I would obsess over trying to remember who it was. I don’t write a lot down, which forces me to remember both the visuals and the sound. For some reason I never searched for info but when I purchased the Soul Jazz Records Punk 45 Vol 1 comp, I was surprised to learn that they are from New Orleans. Weirdly, that made them even cooler to me. Recently, @CollectorScum mentioned he may have a copy for sale and I jumped, leaped… exploded at the opportunity. So good! Come by to hear this, and possibly something you love, something you hate, something you have never heard before, and something you never want to hear again. I love doing sets like this because if you don’t like what you hear, just wait a few minutes for something different. In 1988 I began working at Finyl Vinyl. One of the first LPs I took as part of my pay was Henry Franklin - The Skipper on Black Jazz Records. That was all it took, I was hooked. In 1996 Soul Jazz released a comp including some of the best tracks from the catalog, which I used as a checklist. This week @revillagrooves completed my set. Darren has knocked off a few of the harder ones to find. Over the years I have found copies at almost every store I frequent and most were under $20. I completed the run of 7-inches a while ago. Come by to hear some of these and many more records you are likely to never hear in a bar. I love doing sets like this because if you don’t like what you hear, just wait a few minutes for something different. When @collectorscum asked me if I needed this LP, my first reaction was, I have no idea because I have never seen it. I was also unfamiliar with Xiomara Alfaro’s music. II searched tracks from this LP which all proved to be mind-blowing and funky as hell. Then I looked for more cuts and found a career that began in the 1950’s and continued, from the best I can tell, into the 2000’s. I have listened to this every day since. I am amazed I have never come across this but this is exactly what makes music and collecting exciting and never-ending. Come by to hear, maybe several cuts from this, and many, many more. Tonight, May 2nd, for this edition of First Thursday at D.C.’s Tavern we are joined by the one and only @DiSiSlim who takes us around the world and back again. There’s no earthly way of knowing, which direction we are going but, if you’re curious about bands with names like Lost Acapulco, Los Temerarios and Los Fugitivos join us for a borderless tour from California to Mexico and parts unknown. No passport required! Also, as promised, I am going heavy on the Punk, Soul Jazz and Jazz Funk. I am packing my boxes with favorites like these included here. First Thursday at D.C’s with @dalespix pouring what he is pouring because that’s the sailor’s way. Bus leaves at 8PM for @disislim unguided tour. This First Thursday, April 4th, at D.C.’s Tavern, we celebrate the career of one of the true greats, the late Andre Williams. I am not sure when I first heard Andre Williams’ music, but I definitely became more aware of him through The Hound’s show on WFMU. Finyl Vinyl had opened not long before The Hound’s debut but I probably would have been seeking the music because of his show. To say Andre was eclectic would be an understatement. He pushed every aspect of his talents whether as a performer, writer, producer, musician, arranger or just simply a character, to the limits. Regardless of what you do, if you want to get noticed, be appreciated and have an extended time doing that thing, you better be the best, remain relevant and make it look like you couldn’t possibly be doing anything else. Andre did it all to perfection. I am lucky that we got to see him in action many times. Generally I won’t go see bands in their later years but if Andre was old or past his expiration date, someone forgot to tell him. He was always amazing. Despite his endless performances and participation on hundreds of recordings, I find myself always going to one record… “Humpin’, Bumpin’ And Thumping.” “ANBODY GOT A RAW EGG?! Well, I feel like HUMPIN’ THUMPIN’ & BUMPIN’!” What we are supposed to do with the raw egg? Even if that is not what he is saying, that is what I want it to be. Raw, pounding and groovy as hell…PUSH! My, my, thank you Andre. Hear this and MANY more, this Thursday at D.C’s. This Friday, January 18, I get to spin an all 7-inch set in one of my favorite bars in Jersey City, PS Wine Bar (93 Newark Ave). I have a tendency to collect and spin sets by subject and for this session I decided to NOT do that…except… for these selections of fine wine tunes including, Eric Burdon and War “Spill The Wine,” Hi-Society Brothers “Don’t Spill The Wine,” Lambert, Hendricks & Ross “Gimme That Wine,” Lucky Milinder And His Orchestra “The Grape Vine,” Jerry Butler And The Impressions “Sweet Was The Wine,” and Gary McFarland “Wine and Bread.” OK, other than that, Friday’s set will be the usual ecclectic mix of Funk, Soul, R&B, Instrumentals, Jazz, Latin, Dub, 70’s Punk Rock, Hard Rock, 80’s and 90’s stuff and many more. Come by and hear this and many more.
