Hello Y'all! Recently @CollectorScum and I went off to Allentown, Pennsylvania for the 44th Semi-Annual 45/78 RPM Music Expo. This could be the most amazing and overwhelming thing for a 7-inch collector to do. Last year I only made it to about 5 or 6 tables. This time I attempted to walk around first and look at the tables before digging. Needless to say, I only made it to 5 or 6 tables. First up was the always amazing Parker's Records out of Ohio. It was also great to finally meet Don in person. He recently went through an incredible medical procedure and it was great to hear he is recovering quickly. I found some long time wants and some that were completely unknown to me. Leading the unknowns is Randolph Bros. Plus "What It Is," parts one and two. Super heavy with female Funk vocal and breaks. Every collection tells the story of the collector and could be used as a biography. The bulk of most collections center around the impressionable years as explorations of genres, sounds, and performances were most concentrated. New discoveries will always come, shaping the collection is a lifelong project, and it is a constant source of joy. Hello Y'all! For about four years, once a year, DJ Trouble would have Joe Bataan and a guest on and I get to DJ between talks. Usually it was the amazing Harvey Averne, two time grammy winner, musician, head of Fania Records and owner of Coco records. Modern Latin artist Jonathan Goldman and leader of Spanglish Fly. Joe's manager and friend Ken Curtis who Harvey mentioned makes great soup. Obviously due to the pandemic it has been quite a while since we have gathered. This coming Thursday, January 19 the delay ends. Joe Bataan, a true legend, will be the guest of DJ Trouble and WFMU. Sometime being an artist has its benefits. One of my favorite record stores is Revilla Grooves and Gear in Milltown, New Jersey. The proprietor, Darren Revilla, has one of the best concepts; fill the bins with the highest quality and best condition records you will find. Simple, but not an easy one to adhere to. It's not just about clean records. His ability to find the most sought after and rare records seems like an impossible task when you flip the bins of his competition. This makes being paid in store credit perfectly acceptable. In March of this year I did an ad for the store that is running in Weird NJ, easily one of the greatest magazines and organizations ever. This was the stores first ever ad and I was extremely honored when Darren asked me to create it. a few months ago he asked if I would do a postcard for his upcoming Dollar Record Sale. Darren is putting out over 20,000 records, all for just $1 each. These boxes contain what most stores would fill their bins with but as proof of concept, these are not worthy of the stores hallowed space. This First Thursday, September 5th, at D.C.’s Tavern we will not just have one guest, but TWO. Three heads are always better than one, right? It's the King Ghidorah of DJ sets. There may be a common theme throughout but I doubt it, but that is what makes life interesting. TomDash was known for his DotDash party in Brooklyn and is now a regular on WFMU. He describes DotDash Radio with TomDash as, "DIY music for the spirit; bummer jams for happy people; terrestrial music for space travelers; punchy, post-punk jitters, synth drones for the mindful; fuzz-drenched, basement rock to sooth the soul…" CollectorScum a.k.a. Justin Frohwirth has regularly spent the night at D.C.'s playing the rarest and best Punk rock 7-inches the walls have ever absorbed. His collection is one of the most focused and impressive I have ever seen and we are lucky when he takes them out of his studio. BUT, he is considering a major life change, so let's see how things play out. I will say it every time, the patrons of D.C.'s are easily and without a doubt the most patient and tolerant audience. Some recent Jazz and Instrumental finds, trades and purchases. I had never seen or heard the Karl Berger which is an aggressive Free Jazz session with some very cool soloing. The Charles Earland is an upgrade from a green label pressing. Been wanting the Weldon forever and received it as a gift from my brother. @CollectorScum comes through with a Hank Mobley upgrade and Sonny Rollins “Worktime,” which turns out to be one of my favorite Jazz sessions ever. The Rollins is in amazing shape and sounds incredible. The recent Brewerytown Beats issue of the unreleased Sounds of Liberation is so good it amazes me to think it went unheard until recently. After discovering Bobby Timmons, from Jazz Messengers LPs I bought when I was a teenager, I obsessively bought every LP I could find. This is easily my favorite and it is so great to finally have an OG Mono copy. It took way too long to find the Upchurch and “Voodoo Chile” is just as good as I remember it. Grover Washington Inner City Blues, is one of my favorite Soul Jazz records, and is a white label promo with the Kudu one-sheet. Lawrence of Newark is an OG upgrade from a reissue I got in the 90’s. I can't find much info about Zebidee who cover James Brown's, "Sex Machine," which I could not pass up despite the rough condition. Hello Y'all. While digging through the unsorted treasure chests at Revilla Grooves I pulled a copy of this 1968 Little Eva Harris - "Get Ready - Uptight" b/w "Mr. Everything" (Spring Records cat. SK704). And yes, this is the same Little Eva of "The Loco-Motion" fame. This amazing two-sider has a pounding, funky mash-up of "Get Ready" and "Uptight" on the A-side. Although Ms Harris' vocals are perfect the drumming on this track is incredible. On the B-side is powerful Soul song filled with emotional vocals, a spirited chorus, and the band sounds like it is on the edge of exploding. Sticking with Spring, I picked up two more two-siders. Richard Barbary - "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" b/w "Get Right" keeps the same late 60's Soul meets Funk groove going. One of my most hated beats in a song is a marching beat and they are smart enough to avoid it opting for a heavy 4/4 into a funk groove. The flip continues the head nodding feel with shared vocals with deeper compliment that launches into a celebratory chorus. Leroy Randolph - "(I Have Fallen Into) The Tender Trap" b/w "Good to the Last Drop" The A-side is a tender ballad with an almost Christmas feel from the piano and backing that sounds like the bass is singing HO HO HO. On the flip is where the power is. Opening with a very cool off beat break the song pounds into a Soul vocal over a moving groove that pauses at the choruses but eventually brings back the break. Mr Randolph's vocals rides above it all with a positive and exciting smile in his vocal. Hello Y'all. This Sunday Matinee at Lo-Fi the box is filled with a ton of new finds. When Revilla Grooves did the dollar sale, Darren said to me, “You don’t dig dollar bins right?” He said that when they were pulling out boxes for the dollar sale, they found about twenty unsorted, and never looked though boxes from various collections. More than half of what I chose I had never heard of. There were some long time wants, and some pretty obscure ones in there. Hot Coke "Make Love Last," opens with a few screams over a beat that drops into a great break with echoey handclaps. Despite being from 1975 it retains the rawness of songs from 72/73 with a great head nodding groove layered with horns, some incredible effected guitar playing, and harmonized vocals. Jo Ann Garrett - Its' No Secret is trippy, bizarre, and groovy as hell. It is also insanely creepy. G-Force - "Feel The Force" on Will Crittendon's SMI label. The track pulses, bangs, and gets spacey. This is the 3:47 7-inch version which I can not seem to find documented. The Ghostman Band - "Disco Shock" 1 and 2 on Akiba Records. A bizarre, but incredible Disco record. "Disco Shock 2," is uptempo and played by a live band. The drums and bass drive the song but the effected guitar, synths, SHOCK effect and chorus vocals make it a party. The Spoilers - "Turbo Rock" b/w "Sad Man's Land" (Turbo cat. TU 005) The US Turbo version is not the break heavy track released on UK London. Still a great record. For some reason I had never gone to Big Jim's. Unfortunately Jim passed away a few years back. Once inside I met @adambombx79 who is now running things. Adam's enthusiasm is worth a million dollars to the family that still own the shop. You can tell he and Jim had a great relationship and that no one else should be in charge. Very high up in the in the holy grail category for me are Stooges 7-inches. I only have the reissues. Easily my favorite song is "I Wanna Be Your Dog" so I happily grabbed this copy with the equally as great "1969" on the flip. There were a few Captain Beefheart's on the wall but two jumped out at me immediately; a UKK promo of one of the greatest Soul songs by a progressive artist, "Too Much Time" and a Captain Beefheart - Ry Cooder tour promo voiced by Frank Zappa. Yup, that is exactly what I said. I recently discussed my over 300 James Brown 7-inches but one has remained far more elusive than most, "Chonnie On Chon." This early James R&B blast was worth the wait in this condition. I ignored the 7-inches of one of my earliest obsessions KISS so getting copies now is more difficult than I imagined. "Flaming Youth" b/w "God of Thunder" with the incredible pic sleeve has been at the top. I am a sucker for Rolling Stones picture sleeves and this mono French one with its very proper portrait did the trick. A UK Johnny Kidd and the Pirates has been on my list forever. Hello Y'all. Want lists and holy grails are what keep us digging. The possibility of finding an unknown is what drives us. It is insane to look at a collection that contains all of those. This is the third trip to Princeton for a Punk collection since the incredible one they got in over the summer. John and Rob are amazing so I love going there. This collection was focused on DC and the fact that most of these were unplayed is incredible. The Teen Idles is a “second” since it is the paper cover not the heavier one. The SOA is a third (w/ Black Flag bars and no band name on label). The Bad Brains is an upgrade to a stamped sleeve. I already have a second, but with no stamp which is now in the sales box. I had never heard of The Shirkers. They are a DC band on Limp. I would have listened to it because of the titles but I was with @CollectorScum and he basically handed it to me and said, you need that. It is really fucking good. Another long time want, by one of the most influential bands on me as a listener and musician, "The Modern Dance" by Pere Ubu. There were a few Pagans 7-inches but I am only looking for two...now I am only looking for one. Partners In Crime - “No Big Deal” (Mutha Records cat. MUTHA 026) Guitars with a Ramones / Heartbreakers attack, pounding drums and a snotty toned vocalist with attitude for days are what Partners In Crime are. Somehow this came out in 1984. It is almost like they didn’t pay any attention to the years between 1977 and 1984 jumping right to Punk from Hard Rock. Oh yeah, and from the photo on the cover you would think they were a Metal band. The song titles are (in order); “I Hate Your Guts,” “I Wanna Drive You,” “Cram It” “N.B.D. (No Big Deal),” “Trash,” and of course the closer is, “You Suck.” So, fuck you and your pussy-ass band…YOU SUCK! Did I mention that the snotty toned vocalist was a big haired Jersey girl? So again, fuck you, you phony tough-guy. This thing is AMAZING! I only heard about this last week and found a copy this weekend at Spin Me Round Records. Hello Y'all, initially I was just going to pepper the set with Soundtrack recordings for this Sunday Matinee at Lo-Fi, but once I started digging deeper, by and deeper I ended up filling the entire box. Amazingly this is only about two-thirds of the soundtrack 7-inches I have. I realized that many of the Shaft and Superfly records are not really straight covers plus all the related recordings so I am bringing those with me too. This is going to be fun.
