Well, now you have. I took this out of an old computer that my dad bought in like 2005. I used to play underground 2, gta vice city and many other old but gold games on it.

Thrift Store Laptop

Welcome back fuckers to my tumble dryer. Today's garbage fire wonders how long I can keep this mostly-upbeat, mostly-grammatically-correct tone going.

A few days ago, I went to my local thrift store looking for one of those big 5-disc CD changer things that no one wants. I walked out of that store with one laptop and no CD changer.

I bought this IBM ThinkPad R51 for $24.99.

There was also a Panasonic Toughbook, but I don't want to spend $69.99 right now.

After getting it home, suffering to get it open, and viewing the very intact thermal paste,

After suffering to put it back together, likely breaking some things and having a screw left over, it workie!

Complete with personal files, sensitive information, and a probable virus! Yippee!

But yeah. It a ThinkPad. Intel Celeron M 350, 512MB DDR1-333, 40GB HDD, Win XP Pro, good screen, 2005.

Was this worth it? Eh. Do I have one more ThinkPad than I did before (zero)? Yes. Do I have a 5-disc CD changer? Still no.

What are your PC's specs? Also are you fond of a cannister of liquid nitrogen every now and again?

The PC I mainly use is an i3-7100T, using integrated graphics. Memory is a 2x8GiB dual rank micron OEM kit with 4Gbit Rev B chips, at jedec 2133 15-15-15. Motherboard is a Gigabyte B250N-Phoenix with the m.2 WiFi card upgraded to one from a dead Z690 board. It's not fast, but it's fast enough and very low power especially at idle.

I have a second PC that's a Ryzen 9 5900X, GTX 1080 and 2x16GiB of dual rank Samsung B-die (I can't remember the xmp spec or what it's running at). I've used that for streaming, video editing, and any games more intensive than Minecraft and OSRS.

I also have a NAS system with an ASRock X99M Extreme4, registered ECC memory (I forget how much) and a Xeon processor. That uses a variety of different hard drives with snapraid for parity.

In terms of overclocking, I have a pretty big collection of components from the DDR1 to DDR4 eras.

I've used liquid nitrogen in the past, and even made my own pot out of aluminium thanks to a friend with access to a lathe. I haven't touched it lately because pouring from the dewars into flasks was hard on my back and I find withdrawal devices unsettling since they turn the dewar into a pressure vessel. I've also used dry ice, which is a little easier (as long as your setup is happy down to -78C) and a single-stage phase change - though I sold the phase a while back because I needed to free up space to help with moving house.

Overclocking with liquid nitrogen is very fun on platforms that respond well to it, it's very satisfying suddenly being able to run way higher speeds. The fizz you get with LN2 and dry ice is satisfying too.

I had no fuckin idea that they even made Core 2 laptops with DDR1. Actually does that Radeon X200 chipset even support ddr1?

But they really did W7 dirty in the end, it got mega slow in its last year or so.

Die Felsenbühne Rathen Unter der Felsenburg Neurathen und der Bastei, zwischen den Felsen Großer Wehlturm und Kleine Gans findet man am oberen Ende des Wehlgrundes die Felsenbühne Rathen. Von den 1.954 Plätzen sind 1.800 zum Erwerben da. Zu dieser Felsenbühne der Sächsischen Schweiz kommt man durch den Kesseleingang, der etwas über der Mündung vom Amselgrund links abzweigt. Geschichtlicher Hintergrund Die Thingbewegung (Gemeinde Rathen) brachte den Vorschlag, dass man einen Platz für Aufführungen von Musikstücken, sowie Schauspielen bräuchte und dass das Freilichttheater sich dafür ideal eignen würde. So wurde das Theater im Jahr 1936 angelegt. Die Eröffnung fand am 24. Mai gleichen Jahres statt. Sie wurde mit dem Stück "Basteispiel" von Kurt Arnold Findeisen eingeweiht, wobei 200 Bewohner der Stadt Rathen sich hinter oder vor der Bühne befanden. Der Sächsische Gemeindekulturverband nahm die Bühne 1937 in Obhut und im darauffolgenden Jahr konnte man sich hier die ersten Karl-May-Festspiele anschauen. Ab 1942 wurden dann die Festspiele im Zusammenhang mit dem 2. Weltkrieg still gelegt und erst im Jahr 1946 wieder aufgelebt. Ab dem Jahr 1954 bespielt die Landesbühne Sachsen die Felsenbühne Rathen, das erste Mal am 9. Juni 1954 mit dem Schauspiel "Götz von Berlichingen". Die Spielsaison ging im Jahr 1954 von Juni bis August und wurde von mehr als 90.000 Besuchern beigewohnt. Es folgte eine Periode, in der überwiegend musikalische/dramatische Stücke vorgetragen wurden, wie "Der Freischütz" (1956), "Die Räuber", "Wilhelm Tell", "Was ihr wollt" und "Iphigenie auf Tauris", die durch die Naturfelsen außerdem eine besondere Wirkung hatten. Im Jahr 1884 war es dann soweit, dass man die Tradition der Karl-May-Rezeption der Landesbühne Sachsen, die man auf Zeit unterbrochen hatte, wieder fortgeführt hat. Dies geschah mit "Der Schatz am Silbersee", mit der Bearbeitung von Helmut Menschel. Auch kam die Felsenbühne im Herbst 1984 bei den Dreharbeiten von "Ein Schritt zu weit" (Arbeitstitel : "Angst") der Polizeiruf-110-Folge des einstmaligen DDR-Fernsehens zu gute, genauso wie andere Drehorte in der Sächsischen Schweiz, darunter Hinterhermsdorf, Stolpen, Rathen. Zu den Schauspielern zählten Susanne Düllmann, Herbert Köfer, Christel Peters und Marlies Ludwig. Die Oper "Der Freischütz", die von der Landesbühne Sachsen inszeniert worden war, kam in längere Szenen im dem Film vor. Am 01.09.1985 war der Film auf DDR1 das erste Mal zu sehen. Daraufhin kamen dann "Winnetou“ in Verarbeitung von Uwe Wolf im Jahr 1987 und "Old Surehand" in Bearbeitung von Olaf Hörbe 1995 dazu. Da im Jahr 2007 der 165. Geburtstag von Karl May war, führte man hier am 23. Juni 2007 das neue Stück „Der Schatz am Silbersee“ (bearbeitet vom Schauspieler und Regisseur Olaf Hörbe) vor. Die Naturbühne in Sachsen unterlag auch Modernisierungsarbeiten. So wurde zwischen September 2019 und August 2022 ein neues Funktionsgebäude inkl. Arbeits- und Technikräumen, neuer Garderobe und Lagerungsmöglichkeiten gebaut. Die Bühne wurde vergrößert und es kam spezieller Reitsand dazu. Auch wurde die Fassade mit Lärchenholz aus dem Tharandter Wald erneuert. Das Orchester kann man jetzt in einem Orchesterpavillon am Funktionsgebäude erblicken, denn es sitzt nicht mehr im Orchestergraben unter der Bühne. Die Modernisierungsarbeiten haben 18,4 Millionen Euro gekostet. Spiele auf der Felsenbühne Rathen Von Mai bis September gehen die sommerlichen Spielzeiten der Landesbühne. In dieser Zeit kann es bis zu 90 Vorstellungen geben, wobei klassische, so wie auch moderne Stücke vertreten sind. Auch ist vom Schauspiel bis zum Musiktheater alles da, sodass wohl für jeden Geschmack was dabei ist. Zu den traditionellen Aufführungen zählen "Carmina Burana", "Hänsel und Gretel" und "Der Freischütz". So kann man sich neben den Karl-May-Stücken auch andere Vorführungen ansehen. The afters.

The mainboard got air blasted and scrubbed to knock loose dust that had accumulated. The CPU fan reminds me of a radiator fan on a car, and that's no accident, it's designed to keep the hot running Pentium 4 cool assisted by a massive extruded aluminum block of a heatsink. Fresh thermal paste and it's locked down. A fresh CR2032 battery for the CMOS/RTC is also installed.

The videocard needed more work than it appeared, the same thing that caused rust spots on the case seemed to have gotten on the card and wouldn't come off, needing it to be scrubbed in warm soapy water and hung up to dry! The GPU fan was cleaned and the heatsink air blasted, fresh paste and it was ready to go in.

The Soundblaster Audigy ZS2 it had unfortunately died and was replaced with a Soundblaster Live 5.1.

Something often lamented with older systems is how much of a pain the ribbon cables are, and they are right. Instead of just tossing the cables in at random and hoping for the best, I go one cable at a time. I fold the cable, and if I have to turn, I fold the cable at 45 degrees, making a crisp corner.

The floppy drive cable only has to connect to one drive so it's got the simplest path, the DVD drive is at the end of it's run, the cable folds and goes up, the opposite for the HDD. It creates a cluster of folded cables at the headers but those can be worked around as you'll see.

The next in is the power supply, this supply doesn't have the detachable cables and as you saw in the befores is an octopus of wiring. I tamed it with zip ties and bundling the cables together, inspired a bit by the wiring found in vastly more complicated machines. If I had lacing twine I would have probably laced the cables up instead, but zip ties work just the same here.

Installed is the fresh air duct and then the system is closed up. The second DVD drive is a place holder, the system doesn't need a second drive and the motherboard does not support SATA, I would need a bridge card with the option ROM installed to boot. (Apparently some SATA bridge cards expect the system to already know how to boot from SATA.) For this machine, UDMA 100 PATA is plenty fast.

Then signs of life POSTING with no OS installed and then finally, a fresh install of Windows XP Pro.
