Xi'an is a trans woman (theory)
So here’s the post I promised about how Xi’an, the Twi’lek woman from chapter 6, is trans. It’s under the cut, because its pretty picture heavy.
So, if you’re not that big of a star wars fan, you may not have noticed this before, but Twi’leks have a pretty obvious form of sexual dimorphism. Female Twi’leks have cone ears, while male Twi’lkes have pointed, but still human looking, ears.
Now as we also see with Hera and Aalya, a lot of Twi’leks wear head coverings. But with Hera, we can clearly see how her goggles accommodate for her cones. But with Xi’an:
There is no such gap or budge. Her headress is very similar to that of her brother’s (sorry I don’t have any pictures) and if we look at this page from the Solo Official Guide, it resembles the style of a “male” headdress a lot more closely:
(”Faux-cones on male deaddress are a playful choice” yeah right Pablo, Hado is non-binary).
There is also another typical male Twi’lek trait Xi’an has- sharpened teeth.
“[Isval] whirled on him, lips twisted into a snarl, revealing teeth she’d sharpened to points, something typically done only by male Twi’leks.” -Lords of the Sith
(
Now as this excerpt demonstrates, its not a secondary sexual characteristic, but a form of presentation. Isval did it herself (her relationship with gender is a bit complicated). So if its presentation, how would a trans!Xi’an have it? Well, if Twi’lek teeth don’t grow and act more like human teeth, then the sharpening would be a permanent thing, something she did before she realized she was a woman. Or she just likes how it makes her look fiercer. Trans people don’t have to follow all of their gender’s norms.
So as for medically transitioning, Xi’an has clearly gotten top surgery, but left behind male Twi’lek characteristics. Perhaps she only wanted enough so that humans and other aliens would know to gender her as female. Or perhaps alien specific transition surgeries are more expensive, and while transphobia doesn’t exist in the star wars universe, capitalism most certainly does.
So there it is. Now I expect doylist wise, the creators just wanted Xi’an to look more similar to Qin, but I have a feeling that even if that’s the case, we have a good chance of this getting confirmed in some book or comic. Because while there hasn’t been any queer rep in star wars on screen, there has certainly been some on the page.

Deaddress? Why not Dresspool?
Dresspool is clearly the superior name! However, it was stolen before I could get to it!
