Dead Man off Campus

           I enrolled in a college today. I can't tell you which one or even where it's located, but I will say that it is not YSU and that it is out of state, but not too far from home. This isn’t exactly recent news within my household, but I’ve decided to withhold this information from any social media in an attempt to avoid the embarrassment of something inevitably going wrong. But tonight I’m feeling confident in myself and my future. Some part of me is superstitious enough to believe if I make this announcement, then the contract with Fate will be signed off and I can count on it happening. So, here’s the story:

           I sent a few applications out over (what would for the already-enrolled be) winter break shortly after the Christmas holiday. I don’t really know what inspired me to do so, considering my current predicament, but let it never be said that this Todd Crawford is a defeatist. Since then, I’ve been talking weekly with the Financial Aid offices of my disclosed future university, trying to work steadily towards a guarantee of my attendance this upcoming Fall. The cost of tuition per semester shall amount to about $4,378, which is practically nothing compared to the colleges where my fellow high school graduates are studying. That, of course, does not include any meal plan or housing, but I’ve been tracking down off-campus housing to stay in and making calls with their owners. I found a place that isn’t exactly cheap, but it should be manageable. $3,998 for one academic year is much more affordable than the minimum $8,000 housing on-campus, although Internet is not included in the package I’m going with. (I’ll have to call and have that installed myself, as well as make monthly payments in order for them to continue providing the service, just like in a real home.)

So, that’s the cost, but how am I planning to pay for it all? Well, by the end of this summer, I should have towards $3,000 saved up from working at the factory. FAFSA/FIA are willing to offer me a meager $1,000 for my education, and my grandfather has agreed to help finance the rest of my education, with certain stipulations, such as being informed regularly of my academic status and not being a drunken sluggard. My parents are thankfully willing to make the drive up to provide me food at least once a month, and both sides have access to my checking account to make deposits whenever necessary. They applied for some sort of academic loan called the “Parent Plus Loan” or something like that, and if they are denied, then I’ll be receiving another $2,000 per semester for their denial. I don’t know how/why I’d be getting money as a reward for my parents’ denial, but I’ll take it! It may not be much in the face of the insurmountable fees and charges of making a mind for oneself, but for once I think that I’ve got a fighting chance. I’ve also been applying for roughly one scholarship a week, but you know how much faith I put into those sort of things. Is there any possibility that I could be going home mid-semester with nothing to show for but a major dent in my family’s budget? Surely, though I’m probably the first to admit it. But can you blame me for trying? What else am I to do with myself?
