so I’m pretty sure decandido is writing more along the lines of a too-cool-for-school dean rather than a secret-english-major dean. which of course is incorrect.

it’s canonical that dean reads—widely—so the simpsons comment actually makes more sense if you read it as dean trying to throw sam off the scent. deflecting. take the focus off of him. this is dean’s typical self-deprecating behavior.

dean = dumb:

you gotta remember that dean grew up in a “household” that didn’t prioritize his needs, let alone his education. his job was to babysit, bodyguard, and follow orders. so dean likely has a lot of internalized feelings about his intelligence. he constantly refers to sam and john as geniuses.

I did some math and if dean had stayed in school he would’ve graduated at 17 in the spring of 1997. which means he got his GED sometime between then and when we first meet him in the pilot, 8 yrs later. it takes, on average, 3 months to get your GED.

but I can’t imagine dean having that much downtime between hunts. but I can imagine him finding one of those GED textbooks—probably at a thrift store while shopping for flannel—and carrying it around in his duffel for...a year? reading it on motel beds, his practice tests mixed in with pages of lore. or while driving, an audio cassette version playing in place of music.

dean never does any of this when john is around. he’d tell him he’s wasting his time. what do you think you’re sammy or something? focus on the job. dean is a tool. a blunt instrument of destruction. you don’t need book learning or a GED for that.

sam = smart:

in phantom traveler (spn 1x04) we learn that, away from his sons, john actually brags about sam going stanford. he knows that normal non-hunting people would see that as an accomplishment. bragging is playing the proud dad card. just a normal guy, who’s more than happy to help you with your pesky ghost problem.

it also smacks a little of jealousy to me. john knows sam’s smarter than him (likely dean too) and we’ve seen plenty of instances where he’s withheld knowledge from them. as a means of control, yes, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s just to be petty as well. father/author/god and all that.

but it also occurs to me that sam was probably their researcher from the get-go. holed up in the motel of the week, waiting for john and dean to return from a hunt, with nothing else to do but click around the internet on his second-hand laptop.

and maybe dean calls him. from payphones and later burner cells. it’s to check in but he says it’s for directions or to confirm information. and sam wants to help. and he also finds that he enjoys the research. it’s a hunt of it’s own—but without the visera. and the payoff is being able to contradict john.

by the time sam’s old enough to really hunt, full time, he’s already cemented himself as the winchester researcher. and it works. sam’s the database, dean is the soldier, john the general.

all this to say, I think dean is lying about “eddie albert poe.” in their line of work authors like poe—an iconic purveyor of supernatural tales—is likely part of their day-to-day lore.

and since poe is taught in a lot of US high schools, he’s definitely going to be on the GED. so I don’t buy that dean hasn’t read “the raven” or “the tell-tale heart” or “lenore.” not for a second.

Scandalous Small-town Secrets

This is the newest WIP I will be working on, I haven’t gotten any stories out yet and am still working on my other WIPs, but check out my fan fiction blog @hanstielprompts where I will post one-shots when they come up.

This is the story of Castiel Novak and Hannah Vermuellen who live in a small town in Maine. In this town, called Willow’s Fog, where everyone knows everyone, Hannah comes from a strict military family and her father worries about her interest in Castiel who is known for his rebellious tendencies. Castiel and Hannah have to be secretive about their love affair but its hard in a town like this. This is a collection of one-shots about their lives and the lives of the people around them.

Main characters

Castiel Novak: Bee farm/convenience store clerk: He used to date Lucifer in high school and the two had a son together and he dated Meg for a long time but the two remain close friends. His son Jack is 13 and living with him. In addition to his two jobs, he is also going to college to be a bee conservationist.

Hannah Vermuellen: plant nursery/antique store/science major: Hannah comes from a conservative family. Her mother died in childbirth and her father is a navy recruiter. Hannah loves science and history and wants to be a teacher. She has two part-time jobs as she is having to put herself through college since her father won’t help her with her education. She dreams of the day she can leave home.

Town population

Raphael Vermuellen: Navy recruiter/city government: Raphael spends a lot of time at the college since he is a navy recruiter and there is an office there. He is a widower with three grown daughters. He is active at the local church.

Naomi Vermuellen: English teacher/bible studies: Naomi teaches religion and English at the only K-12 school in town. She is Hannah’s older sister and she is married to Metatron. She tried to date Gabriel back in school and is upset that he is openly gay.

Tessa Vermuellen (deceased): Hannah’s younger sister had a stressful life. She dated Dean Winchester in high school until he had a one night stand with Anna. She became depressed, getting addicted to pills. She killed herself via overdose although Raphael and Naomi blame her death on drugs and Dean. Hannah was devastated by her death but… was her death really suicide or was it murder?

Gabriel Novak: Biology of sex teacher/grocery store. Gabriel is Castiel’s older brother. He has been responsible for his younger siblings ever since their mother died. He is dating Sam Winchester.

Anna Novak: Veterinarian. Anna joined the peace corp and traveled a little before returning home. She and Dean had a one night stand when they were younger, something they both regret. She and Gabriel are estranged because she left instead of help take care of Castiel. She is dating Charlie Bradbury.

Jack Novak: Castiel’s teenage son. His mother, Lucifer, lost custody of him when she had a psychotic incident and Castiel has been taking care of him ever since.

John Winchester: Widower, father of two. He and his best friend own the car repair place in town.

Mary Winchester (decreased): Mary was killed in a car accident.

Dean Winchester: car mechanic, hardware store clerk. Dean developed a drinking problem after Tessa’s death. He is Castiel’s best friend. Dean and Jo are dating but he doesn’t realize that Benny has had a crush on him for a long time.

Sam Winchester: anthropology student/museum/grocery store. Sam is a recovering drug addict trying to get a new start at college. He’s taking classes in anthropology and volunteers at the local museum. His ex-girlfriend is Ruby and he is dating Gabriel now. He and Eileen Leahy are best friends.

Zachariah: Town Mayor. Zachariah is the mayor of this small town. His son and daughter both enjoy the spoils of his prosperity.

Michael. Town Sherif. Lucifer’s brother.

Lucifer (genderbent). Salon owner. Lucifer got pregnant at 17 and in this small town it was a major scandal. Castiel is Jack’s father and Zachariah pinned the entire thing on Castiel. Later on, Lucifer had a psychotic episode and attacked Rowena in public. Zachariah’s influence kept her out of jail but she lost custody of Jack. Her father’s money bought her her own beauty salon. The only one in town.

Bobby Singer: Car repair shop/hardware store owner. He married William Harvelle’s widow and adopted Jo, he and Ellen also adopted an orphan from Ireland, Eileen Leahy after they met her on their honeymoon there.

Ellen Harvelle: Saloon owner.

Jo Harvelle: Criminology major/outdoor supply store clerk. Jo wants to be a cop, but for now she goes to school and sells hunting and fishing supplies to the locals. She is currently dating Dean Winchester.

Eileen Leahy: anthropology major/museum volunteer. She and Sam are best friends. Her parents were killed in Ireland and she is deaf. She is currently dating Ruby, Sam’s ex.

Rowena Macleod: Rowena owns the local wicca shop and is a popular fortune teller. She is a bit of a cougar and it is rumored that has been after Gabriel for years.

Crowley Macleod: Crowley sells cheat sheets and premade scantrons to college students and runs a number of other black market ventures, anything that comes his way. He is excellent at making a deal. He is dating Meg Masters and the two are always scheming something.

Meg Masters: sex shop owner. She and her sister Ruby are the bad girls in town. Their parents died and they sort of raised one another. Meg dating Castiel for a while and the two remain close friends. Their friendship is a cause for disapproval around town because of Meg’s reputation. She is also good friends with Hannah although Hannah’s father doesn’t let them hang out. She and Crowley date.

Ruby Masters: sex shop owner. She is the one who got Sam into drugs although she has long since given up the hard stuff. It is rumored she still sells marijuana on the side. She is dating Eileen Leahy.

Garth Fitzgerald: Arcade owner.

Bela Talbot: Antique/pawn store owner, she deals in black market goods.

Charlie Bradbury: Works at the arcade. She spends a lot of her time playing magic or running DnD. She and Anna rent and apartment together and foster animals.

Balthazar: Motel owner. He used to date Gabriel.

Jody Mills: Forest ranger/conservationist. She lives with her wife, Donna and their two daughters, Claire and Alex.

Donna Hanscum: Fire chief.

Claire Mills-Hanscum: Teenage daughter of Donna and Jody. She goes to school with Jack.

Alex Mills-Hanscum: Teenage daughter of Donna and Jody. She goes to school with Jack.

Linda Tran: Doctor. She runs the small medical clinic in town.

Kevin Tran: Linda’s teenage son.

Death: Pizza restaurant owner. Death is originally from Chicago and he owns one of the few restaurants in town. He serves pizza, pasta, and some local Maine delicacies such as lobster sandwiches.

Billie: Diner owner. Billie owns the other restaurant in town. It is a fancier diner that specializes in Maine and regional American cuisine. She and Death are married and they have two adopted children.

Benny Lafitte: waiter/Pizza delivery driver. Benny enjoys working at both of his parents restaurants.

Kaia Nieves: Death and Billie’s adopted teen daughter.  

Metatron. A banker. He is Naomi’s husband.
