How to Use 3D Laser Scanning for Building Renovations in Montreal
When I first encountered 3D laser scanning, I was struck by how efficiently it could transform the way we approach building renovations in Montreal. Renovating any structure, especially historic or complex buildings, presents unique challenges. Measurements must be precise, and understanding the building's current state is paramount. 3D laser scanning technology has become an invaluable tool in this process, helping streamline projects and eliminate guesswork.
Understanding the Basics of 3D Laser Scanning
For those unfamiliar, 3D laser scanning captures the exact dimensions of a building or structure by using laser light to measure distances. It creates a detailed point cloud, which can then be turned into a highly accurate 3D model. These models allow architects, engineers, and construction professionals to visualize the building in intricate detail, identify problem areas, and plan renovations with confidence.
When I first started using 3D laser scanning for renovation projects, it became clear how this technology bridges the gap between existing conditions and renovation plans. Whether it’s an older building with no available blueprints or a complex commercial space, scanning creates an accurate foundation for future work.
Step 1: Initial Site Survey
The first time I used 3D laser scanning for a renovation project in Montreal, I quickly learned that the initial site survey is key. The scanning process starts by visiting the building and setting up the laser scanner. The device shoots out laser beams, which bounce back after hitting various surfaces. The scanner then records the distance and angle of these reflections, which it uses to build a detailed 3D point cloud of the entire area.
The accuracy of this survey is remarkable. Instead of relying on manual measurements, which are prone to errors, the laser scanner captures even the most minute details. From decorative moldings to slightly uneven floors, the scanning technology picks up everything.
Step 2: Data Processing and 3D Model Creation
After the on-site scanning, the data must be processed. In my experience, this step is where the magic happens. The raw point cloud data is transformed into a detailed 3D model, providing an accurate representation of the building’s current state. In Montreal, where many buildings have unique architectural features or have experienced wear over the years, having a precise model is invaluable.
The data can be filtered to remove any irrelevant points and then segmented into different areas of the building. These models give architects and engineers the ability to plan renovations without having to rely on outdated blueprints or manual measurements. The model becomes the basis for creating new plans, identifying structural issues, or determining the placement of new features.
Step 3: Collaboration with Architects and Engineers
One of the greatest benefits I’ve found with 3D laser scanning is its ability to enhance collaboration. Architects and engineers can work from the same detailed 3D model, ensuring that everyone is on the same page. This was particularly useful in a renovation project I managed in Montreal where coordination between various teams was critical.
By using the model, we could assess the impact of proposed changes, test different design ideas, and make adjustments before construction began. This eliminated potential conflicts, which are common when dealing with historic or older buildings in Montreal. The model helped us identify load-bearing walls, structural weaknesses, and even areas where the foundation had shifted slightly over the years.
Step 4: Identifying and Addressing Structural Issues
In one of my recent projects, we discovered several structural issues that were not immediately visible to the naked eye but were captured by the 3D scan. These issues could have led to significant setbacks if they were only found during the demolition phase. With 3D laser scanning, we were able to incorporate solutions early in the planning process.
For example, in a historic Montreal building, the scan revealed that several support beams had deteriorated over time. Thanks to the data, we could adjust the renovation plans and ensure that the new design reinforced these areas without causing further damage to the structure.
Step 5: Implementing the Renovation Plans
Once the scanning and modeling are complete, the actual renovation can begin. One of the advantages I’ve noticed with 3D laser scanning is that it allows contractors to work with pinpoint accuracy. The model ensures that everyone involved knows exactly what needs to be done and where.
In a recent renovation of a commercial space in Montreal, we used the 3D model to guide the installation of new HVAC systems and electrical wiring. Because the scan was so detailed, we could plan the placement of these systems without compromising the building’s aesthetics or structural integrity.
Step 6: Post-Renovation Validation
After the renovation is complete, 3D laser scanning can be used again to validate the work. In my experience, this post-renovation scan is invaluable, as it confirms that the renovations have been executed according to plan. It also provides a new baseline model of the building, which can be used for future maintenance or additional renovations.
For example, in a project where we installed new walls and ceilings, the post-renovation scan ensured that everything was aligned correctly and that there were no deviations from the initial plans. This final scan provides peace of mind for both the client and the renovation team.
Benefits of 3D Laser Scanning in Montreal Renovations
Using 3D laser scanning for building renovations in Montreal offers several key advantages:
Accuracy: Manual measurements are prone to error, especially in older buildings. 3D laser scanning eliminates this issue by providing precise data.
Efficiency: Renovations can be planned and executed more quickly, saving both time and money. The technology reduces the risk of costly mistakes or delays.
Collaboration: Architects, engineers, and contractors can all work from the same model, improving communication and reducing the risk of misinterpretation.
Preservation: Montreal is home to many historic buildings. 3D laser scanning helps preserve these structures by providing detailed data that can be used to maintain their integrity during renovations.
Future Planning: The data captured during a 3D laser scan can be used for future renovations or maintenance, ensuring that accurate information is always available.
Conclusion
In my experience, 3D laser scanning has revolutionized the way we approach building renovations in Montreal. Whether it’s a small commercial space or a historic landmark, this technology provides the precision, efficiency, and flexibility needed to carry out renovations with confidence. By incorporating 3D laser scanning into your renovation plans, you can ensure that your project is completed on time, within budget, and with the highest level of accuracy.

Week One - Brochure Research
To get my head more into this project, I did some research on Behance into other projects that have used a folded brochure as the format. I also researched some past student work to see how others have approached the brief.
Past Student Work
Abbey Barlow
Tumblr media Tumblr media
https://www.behance.net/gallery/121609657/Typografika-Poster
This student’s work I found very interesting. The handmade qualities of the typography on the poster was quite different to other work I have looked at. The poster really heroes the typography, which fits well with the project as a typography conference. The designer has cleverly linked the poster and brochure sides by using the liquified colour pattern of the poster type in lines and boxes on the brochure. The lines are also used as a connecting device between pages in the brochure to guide the interaction with the format. The brochure layout is quite simple, making the information easily accessible. I like how the designer portraits have been treated in three different ways that all fit with the design system of the project, adding some more interest and variation to the otherwise quite simple layout and colour use. The poster is very visually appealing, which would quickly draw in the eye of passers by. The 3D, colourful typography is so bold and unique which works perfectly for the purpose of a poster.

What drew me to this past student’s work was the simplicity of the design and colour palette. I like how the designer used a creamy off-white instead of a more clinical pure white. It creates a warmer tone to the work. The use of lines in the work is also quite clever. In the brochure, the lines separate the information to make it more easily digestible, and also serve to connect and order the panels of the brochure. This means that information is gathered in the order the designer intended. The poster design uses a range of different typefaces, both serif and sans serif. Some of the type overlaps, there is a range in sizes of the letters, and there are other artistic accents applied to the type. For a poster advertising a typography conference, this works really well as it showcases a variety of typographic features.

This brochure is an informative guide about the natural spaces around Warsaw. The design has quite a large colour palette, with earthy, muted tones of bright colours used as accents to an off white and muted black. For the purpose of the brochure, the earthier tones work very well. This brochure also features a series of symbols that are used throughout. These work as connecting devices across the pages, and are used decoratively and in infographics. The typography used in this brochure is very simple and clear, with a bold sans-serif used for headings. I like how photographs have been used in this brochure as backgrounds.
Jo Cutri Studio
Tumblr media
https://www.behance.net/gallery/129247881/CLA
This brochure is advertising for the Centre for Leadership Advancement. It has a very illustrative style, with type acting more as a support to the illustrations. I like how the background colours of the pages in this spread contrast against each other, with the colour of the text inverted as well. This creates a clear divide between the pages, adding structure and separation. For the brochure project I will be working on, I want to make a more typographic brochure as this better suits the topic of the project. However, it was still interesting to see how they approached the different pages and spreads, and the use of colour.

https://www.behance.net/gallery/161627673/I-Musici-of-Montreal-Chamber-Orchestra-%282022-2023%29
This brochure is for the Montreal Chamber Orchestra. It has a very consistent system used throughout the brochure, with each spread laid out the same way. The typographic layout of the biography pages with the photos is very clean and minimalist, allowing the information to speak for itself and the opposing pattern page to stand out. There is a very sleek and calm look to this design, created by using muted neutral colours, soft gradients, and minimal type. Overall, the whole brochure is very cohesive and easy to read. This was a nice example to look at because the content is similar. The provided copywriting for the project we will be doing features designer biographies, so it is interesting to see how other designers have laid out similar content.
Lan Visual Design
Tumblr media Tumblr media
https://www.behance.net/gallery/154169551/phiat-poo
I’m not too sure what the purpose / topic of this brochure is, but I found the design quite interesting. The pages use a variety of double page spreads and single pages, which creates nice variation throughout the brochure. The type is also laid out quite clearly, with grid structures, lines, and coloured boxes guiding the placement and reading order of type. I like how a combination of symbols and type is used in the brochure to aid the understanding of the project. The colour palette is very strong, and the use of the green as backgrounds, border, accents, and imagery is quite nice. The palette makes the brochure very cohesive despite the range of different page layouts.
Cheng Chieh Sung
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
https://www.behance.net/gallery/140352627/Pingtung-Travel-guide-2022
This brochure serves the purpose of a travel guide. The cover design is laid out like a book, with type above and below an illustration/image. The internal spreads of the brochure I really like. The image and type is laid out using an interesting and unclear grid structure. I like how some images sit flush with the edge of the page, while others are arranged with more white space around them. The bright colours as accents to highlight key phrases, numbers, and words adds a nice bright pop to the design. In the contents page, some images are set in rectangles while other have been cut from their backgrounds. I like the variation this adds to the imagery, and how it is slightly more unconventional. Also, I found it interesting how the illustration from the front isn’t used more throughout the brochure. The illustration itself is also interesting because it has typographic symbols acting as characters in the image. This could be an interesting angle to explore for the more typographic nature of the brochure I will be designing.

8 of the craziest residential complexes around the world
Tumblr media
We have all wondered what it's like to live in a mansion or a palace. But sometimes the most incredible places to live are not castles, but complexes where the architecture is completely crazy!
Click on the link to read about decorating your home https://smithassociates124.blogspot.com/
To dream a little: here are some of the most fabulous residential buildings… here as elsewhere.
1. Montreal: Tropiques-Nord
Located near the Old Port of Montreal, this building built in 1989 continues to be as sought after by buyers. And for good reason: in Tropiques-Nord, it's summer all year round! The complex has 120 condo units on 8 floors, all of which have a terrace overlooking a huge tropical atrium (32,000 square feet), the temperature of which is maintained at 26 ° C at all times. Filled with lush plants, birds and fish, the atrium even has an inviting lagoon where you can swim.
Tumblr media
Palm trees, hibiscus, banana trees that produce fruit ... It's hard to believe that we're in Quebec! In summer, the owners can also take advantage of the tennis, squash and outdoor swimming pools.
The place is on the edge of the St. Lawrence River, in the heart of a large outdoor green space, but at the same time close to everything. It is the neighbor of another iconic complex, making Montréal shine all over the world… and which immediately comes to the next paragraph.
2. Montreal: Habitat 67
It was impossible not to talk about this building, even trying to avoid it… It is found in all the lists and really often in first place, despite its age (and the enormous technological progress which pushed architecture a lot further on since then).
Tumblr media
Built over 50 years ago (i.e. for Expo 67), this complex is still as studied and admired by architects. What few people know is that its designer was in his mid-twenties at the time!
Habitat 67 is made up of 364 precast concrete cubes, grouped into 146 apartments, each with their own terrace. The irregular arrangement of these cubes is unique and makes this structure recognizable among all. On the spot, the concrete seems brighter and more harmonious than it may seem, and all the genius of this project ahead of its time only confirms over time.
3. Vienna: Hundertwasserhaus
The lucky ones who live in this recognizable complex all know the answer to this question that we all ask ourselves: what is it like to live in a comic strip?
Tumblr media
This building was built in 1983 by the city of Vienna, as an experiment in "creative architecture". It has 53 apartments with undulating floors, with 16 private terraces and 3 communities. The imposing vegetation is one of its greatest peculiarities: more than 250 trees grow there (their imposing roots have also ended up causing unexpected damage).
4. Singapore: The Interlace
Perhaps the most spectacular of the group, this complex of 1,000 housing units certainly does not hide its parentage: it is directly inspired by Habitat 67! #touteestdanstoute
Tumblr media
You can see there 31 large rectangular blocks, of 6 floors each, assembled one on the other in an apparently random way (but it is of course an illusion). The complex is located in a superb natural environment and the layout helps to maximize the view and the impression of living in a large park.
Residents can take advantage of many services such as swimming pools, game rooms, tennis and basketball courts, billiard rooms and even (we are in Asia, after all) places to practice karaoke!
5. Dubai: Cayan Tower
Even for Dubai, the city of excess surrealism par excellence, this skyscraper is "overturned". Comprising 75 floors (including 5 undergrounds), this tower is distinguished not only by its height, but above all by its helical shape, whose edges rotate 90 degrees from bottom to top! 😱 To achieve this, each floor had to rotate 1.2 degrees around an elevator and a central space.
Tumblr media
The luxury apartments do not have a balcony, but each has reclaimed wood floors and marble countertops from China as well as other services such as an infinity pool , spa or shops. It took 7 years of design and construction to arrive at this architectural masterpiece, including long stages of 3D modeling in order to test wind resistance and assess other potential problems.
6. Mitaka, Japan: Reversible Destiny
These are lofts, composed of an assembly of 3 primary shapes: cubes, spheres and tubes. In addition to the forms, the very colorful and playful aspect of this small complex gives it a bit of a toy appearance for children.
Tumblr media
Inside these lofts, built in 2005, is very confusing, with undulating floors, uneven surfaces, very narrow passages or low, curved walls, furniture hanging from the ceiling and the colors just as loud as outside. Wow, a whole trip  !
7. Copenhagen: VM Apartments
There are 209 apartments in this unusually structured complex, which has its admirers, but detractors too! Dating from 2004, the place is called so because the structure two two buildings respectively form a V and an M, when viewed from above.
Tumblr media
The most distinctive element of this complex are the balconies in the shape of irregular triangles, somewhat resembling grimy peaks. The idea behind these constructions was to maximize the daylight as well as to ensure a certain intimacy to the inhabitants, because in this way people can enjoy the view, but without seeing the balconies of their neighbors.
8. Vejle, Denmark: The Wave
Comprising 100 luxury apartments located in a fjord on the North Sea coast, this complex draws its influence from the famous Sydney Opera House. These wave forms are both organic and sculptural and visitors continue to praise its integration into its environment. During the day, the building is reflected in the water and its colors and the appearance of its texture change depending on the weather.
Tumblr media
The construction was done in different phases, between 2006 and 2019. The waves each have 9 floors, with several balconies overlooking the fjord. The undulating roof is pierced with windows and skylights, making it possible to optimize daylight. Directly in front of the complex, there are steps leading to a pedestrian avenue used by both their walkers and cyclists. The construction of this magnificent complex has revitalized access to the banks; several businesses have already settled there.

One day in… Toronto. Discovering Downtown on foot
Tumblr media
To be perfectly straightforward, regardless of my long-standing love affair with Canada, Toronto has actually never ever been one of my much-loved cities to go to. This isn't always as a result of any mistake of the city itself, but probably extra to do with when I generally visit. The first time was on my year abroad when I would certainly completed living in Montreal and was almost to find home in January. Let's face it, does any type of city in the North Hemisphere make its best impression when the trees are all bare as well as it's freezing cold? My various other visits to the city ever since have all been for job as well as Toronto has actually had a tendency to be my last stop before getting home. By the time I get to that factor on a job journey I just can not wait for it to be over so I do not think I have actually ever before made much of an effort to learn more about the city properly.
This time around was a little different-- my journey had actually been a little much shorter than typical at around 12 days as opposed to over 2 weeks. I additionally had some time offered before my flight to London at night as well as the weather in Toronto was wonderful. I'm also about to change tasks so I do not understand precisely when I'll next remain in Canada-- sad times. In any case, I was figured out to see a few of the city effectively.
Toronto-- Canada's greatest city
When I've defined Toronto to individuals who have actually never ever checked out in the past, I often tend to equate it to a huge, American city Which I currently understand is quite unjust (sorry Toronto!). As Canada's biggest city, it can undoubtedly be rather frustrating for country bumpkins like myself from the UK. Once I made the initiative to go out and about, I had a blast.
I began (as always) with some on the internet research study to identify vital places I might target that were within walking range of my hotel. Although Toronto has plenty of some truly terrific visitor places that bill entry, such as the CN Tower as well as Casa Loma, taking a trip so consistently for work indicates I just can not pay for (or am not prepared) to invest money on visitor destinations each time I go anywhere. So I got creative, as well as decided to begin with my very own tour of historic Toronto.
Head to the farmers' market in the heart of the city.
I was staying on Richmond Road near Yonge Street (among the main roads in the Downtown area), so it was the perfect base for walking the city. I began by heading a number of blocks south towards the St. Lawrence Market. This is pretty famous in Toronto, however I 'd never ever had opportunity to go to previously. It's an interior market on 2 degrees and has all sorts of stalls, from butchers and also fishmongers via to crafts, culinary and also a tourist shop. Heading to the market, I 'd additionally recognized some vital historic points of interest; the Old Post Office as well as the Gooderham Building, which is Toronto's extremely own flat-iron building. It was impressive to see the extraordinary comparison of 19th Century structures set against a background of glass high-rises.
Spot the historic buildings
I then proceeded my tour by strolling along The Esplanade up to Yonge Road. Doing this provided me an extraordinary view of the CN Tower, which was a very enjoyable shock! When I reached Yonge, it was back to the dynamic main part of Toronto, which meant trying to not get in the way of commuters whilst I attempted to take a photo of an additional historical structure. This was the Birkbeck Building, situated simply off Yonge on Adelaide Street, which is a four-storey Edwardian Baroque-style building from 1908 flanked by even more modern structures.
Now, I realised I 'd devoted to running an errand for my guy and also had to head to the College of Toronto book shop as I 'd assured to grab a hoodie for him (I'm not sure the number of college hoodies one actually needs-- this isn't the very first from my travels). So I headed throughout one block and up Bay Road. Even if you're not intending on trekking all the way to the UofT, this is still a walk worth doing. It took me straight past the Hudson's Bay Business (excellent for purchasing) approximately Old City Hall, which is a magnificent structure. It has an impressive clock tower that chimes every hr as well as holds its very own amongst the high-rises, despite the fact that it was completed back in 1899.
Appreciate some more contemporary views
I would certainly walked around this part of the city in the past, so I recognized that the following crucial picture quit was simply to the left of Old Municipal government-- the Toronto Sign. This modern-day spots lies in Nathan Phillips Square and is 3D and brightened. It looks incredible during the night but this time around I likewise obtained possibility to see it in the day. They were already setting up the Xmas decorations so I wager this will look extraordinary when Toronto has its Christmas lights switch-on! The maple fallen leave at the end of the indication wasn't there when it was initially put up in 2015, however was included at the end of 2016 to note Canada's 150th wedding anniversary this year.
Get a bite to eat
From Nathan Phillips Square, it has to do with a 15 minute walk to Chinatown. I just strolled past the edge, however this is one more fantastic part of Toronto to explore if you have time. Now, I was obtaining quite starving. As I'm not a huge follower of Chinese food, I was influenced by a pupil I saw near UofT consuming pizza, so I headed back Midtown to Terroni. It's very highly ranked for pizza by blogto.com and it was definitely loaded, yet they handled to squeeze me in. Another wonderful lunch area that I didn't have possibility to see this time yet actually such as is Earls on King Street-- the steak and sushi dish is not to be missed out on!
To ensure that was all I had time for as soon as I 'd done a final area of shopping as well as had to head to the airport terminal (early, as the traffic in Toronto is nightmarish). I 'd certainly advise getting out and concerning as well as not simply doing the paid-for traveler points, despite the fact that they are excellent. If you're pressed for time as well as simply intend to obtain a sense of the city, there's nothing better than opting for a roam around Toronto. I have a new-found recognition for the city having put in the time to discover it on foot!

Practitioner - Maurice Benayoun
Maruice Benayoun a French pioneer, contemporary new-media artist, curator and theorist based in Paris and Hong Kong.[1] His work employs various media, including (and often combining) video, immersive virtual reality, the Web, performance, EEG, 3D Printing, large-scale urban media art installations and interactive exhibitions. Often conceptual, Maurice Benayoun's work constitutes a critical investigation of the mutations in the contemporary society induced by the emerging or recently adopted technologies.
After 1994 Benayoun was involved with more virtual-reality and interactive-art installations. One of these was described by Jean-Paul Fargier in Le Monde (1994) as "the first Metaphysical Video Game". One important work from this period includes The Tunnel under the Atlantic, finished in 1995. This was a tele-virtual project linking the Pompidou Center in Paris and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Montreal.[3] More than a technical performance, as the first intercontinental virtual reality artwork (called "televirtuality", Philippe Quéau, 1994), this installation was one-of-a-kind example of what Maurice Benayoun calls architecture of communication, as another way to explore limits of communication, after Hole in Space by Kit Galloway and Sherrie Rabinovitz. The Tunnel under the Atlantic introduces the concept of dynamic semantic shared space.
In 1997 he creates with Jean-Baptiste Barrière World Skin, a Photo Safari in the Land of War, an immersive installation, often mentioned as a reference in virtual art, which was awarded with the Golden Nica, Ars Electronica 1998. The Membrane (2001) — the core of the exhibition Man Transformed — was a large surface breathing and feeling the presence of the visitors.
Key Concepts
Critical Fusion
Maurice Benayoun calls Fusion the mix of Fiction and Reality. It leads to what Guy Debord calls the Society of the Spectacle. Metaphorically, the name is inspired by a compound of Critical Mass and Nuclear Fusion, 'Critical Fusion' is the practice of Fusion when the introduction of Fiction is a way to make visible the invisible instead of hiding the reality: "the fusion of fiction and reality to decipher the world".[4][5]
Urban Cosmetics
Maurice Benayoun talks about Urban Cosmetics when the work of the artist attempts to beautify the City through entertainment and decoration. Urban Cosmetics is the opposite of Critical Fusion.
History of the concept:
The concept of Urban Cosmetics was first introduced during the ISEA Conference in Sydney, 2013. The conference was hold during the Vivid Sydney festival. This concept became instrumental in the explicitation of the legitimacy of the artist's intervention in the public space, to describe what should be avoided, or simply not considered as consistent artistic practice.
The Global Body
After Marshall McLuhan's Global Village, the status of human interactions has been altered by the development of information networks. Maurice Benayoun presents the Internet as the World Nervous System. Any of the connected people becomes like nerve endings, capturing, transmitting and sharing informations. The interconnected world becomes equivalent to a Global Body. Anything affecting a part of the body is immediately felt by the entire body. The concept is frequently used by Benayoun since 2008.[6]
Neurodesign
Neuro-design is a method of design based on BCI, Brain Computer Interaction. The Neuro-design is not the projection of mental images from the brain to machines but the assessment of dynamic forms through the observation of the designer's positive or negative emotions during the biofeedback process. Neuro-design is a form of physically-passive interaction based on a feedback loop between the computer generated shape, considered as an artificial life form, and the brain considered as the ecosystem where the form should evolve to survive. The transmission of the resulting shape from one user another is a form of inheritance, and the dominant shape descriptors are inherited by the following designer creating a chain of iterations supposed to convert gradually an individual design into a collective process based on participative assessment of the resulting shape.
History of the concept
The concept has been developed while working on the Brain Factory project (Hong Kong, 2014), an extension of the Big Reificator Project (Paris, 2011).
Behavioural Design
In 2003, Benayoun presents in Marseilles, France, a performance/conference anticipating the future of the Internet of Objects, IoT. He describes the behaviour of objects in our environment that have a strong social impact and alter deeply our daily life. He suggests to avoid an excessive submissive behaviour that would amplify our natural inclinations and limit the potential of the unexpected. In an ironic fictional research project, He proposes the creation of an "Integrated Psychic Disorder Generator".[14] The Behavioural Design is the design of connected and AI driven objects based on social concerns and artificial life models.
H2H, Human to Human
In reaction to the excessive use of acronyms such as B2B (Business to Business) and B2C (Business to Consumer) that reduces human interactions to mere commercial transactions, Benayoun proposes to consider mediated interactions as H2H: Human to Human generalising the use of the acronym to all human mediations. He contributed to the definition of the Lab of excellence of Paris 8 university naming it "ARTS H2H".

Things to do in Montréal February 24 to March 2
With the idea of spring in the air, Montréal celebrates with one of the biggest winter festivals in the world, MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE, along with more inspiring dance, theatre, art, film and music, plus some top-talent hockey, indie video games and outdoor fun.
Winter city lights
Montréal is no stranger to winter festivities – we’ve been celebrating winter like a a pro for 375 years – while these last 18 winters have been even brighter with the wonderful MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE winter arts, culture and fine dining festival. From Feb. 23 to March 11, the fest shines with an all-new program of performing arts, diverse fine dining options, all-nighter event Nuit blanche on March 4, and the free and family-friendly downtown outdoor site. That’s where you’ll find great local food and drink (sample Québec cheeses, sip Cabral porto, roast marshmallows over open fires), live music and performances such as X-Lumina, and more unique activities: take a ride on the illuminated Ferris wheel, glide down the urban ice slide and zip line, and try your hand at a classic Canadian sport with Curling en lumière.
Activities for all
Among the many free things to do this winter, try tobogganing or ice skating on the Mountain or visit Mammouth Village at the Olympic Stadium Esplanade, featuring skating, ice slides, activities for little kids. If you’re starting spring break early, begin with a visit to the extremely spring-like Botanical Garden’s Butterflies Go Free event – and explore the tropics at the Biodôme or space at the Planetarium, all part of the many worlds at the Montréal Space for Life. Play board games, video games and more all for free at Festival Montréal Joue, Feb. 25 to March 12, including local indie games at the SAT on Feb. 25 and activities at libraries. Or play a game of cricket, ultimate Frisbee or even quidditch at the Ministry of Cricket (and Other Homeless Sports). If you or your kids love the comic book universe of Astérix, see the characters step off the page at Grévin Montréal wax museum. Watch the Montréal Canadiens as they take on the Blue Jackets on Feb. 28 and the Predators on March 2 at the Bell Centre, or go cheer on Montréal’s CWHL stars Les Canadiennes as they skate hard in the Clarkson Cup Playoffs, Feb. 24-26.

Food and drink
Along with the MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE festival’s many gastronomic delights – dozens of incredible local and international chefs, multi-course meals, workshops, food-focused tours! – you’re sure to stay warm in winter with a big bowl of pho or Japanese authentic ramen, a cup of tea at Montréal’s tea houses, a signature winter cocktail at one of Montréal’s Hidden Bars, or an evening of decadence next to Montréal’s coziest fireplaces. And for sweet tooths, why not spoil your inner child at Montréal’s candy shops.

Stage and screen
This year’s impressive winter-spring dance program includes Perm Opera Ballet’s rendition of Swan Lake, presented by Les Grands Ballets at Place des Arts Feb. 22-26, while dance meets rock concert in Helen Simard’s Idiot at La Chapelle Feb. 27 to March 3, and the incredible Dana Michel performs her work Mercurial George at Usine C, Feb. 28 to March 3, while Flamenco Vivo presents the fabulous Lo Esencial by Luis de la Carrasca, Feb. 28 at Le Gesù and it’s Flamenca Night on March 1 at Le Balcon Cabaret Music-Hall. In theatre, laugh along with farcical play Noises Off at the Segal Centre or Centaur Theatre’s comedy Bakersfield Mist. In film: watch indie films and step into the Virtual Reality Garden and Not Short on Talent installation at the Phi Centre, see Children of Men at the Canadian Centre for Architecture on March 2, and America Wild 3D at the Montréal Science Centre, while the Massimadi Afro-Caribbean LGBTQ film festival runs Feb. 21 to March 4 at various venues and 360-degree, surround sound film experiments astound at SAT Fest. And test your film knowledge: did you know that these movies were filmed in Montréal?
