More states join lawsuit to keep 3D-printed gun plans off the internet
More states join lawsuit to keep 3D-printed gun plans off the internet
On August 1st, Defense Distributed was set to upload designs of 3D-printed guns for the public to buy and download. But the day before, a Seattle judge temporarily blocked their release after seven states and Washington, DC sued the company and State Department. Today, eleven more states have joined the legal battle to stop the firearm plans from being sold online.
According to the filing,…

Regrann from @freedom_faction - Thoughts? The U.S. Department of Justice reached a landmark settlement with the #SecondAmendmentFoundation and #DefenseDistributed; an organization that promotes and distributes technologies to manufacture firearms at home with a #3Dprinter. The two organizations initially filed suit against the U.S. government in 2015, after the feds alleged that Defense Distributed was violating munitions export rules contained within the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and ordered the company to cease distribution of gun-making files. The government essentially claimed that by releasing a digital file of technical specifications for a do-it-yourself gun, the company was now an illegal arms dealer. The company claimed in its lawsuit that the feds ordering them to cease distribution amounted to “censorship of Plaintiffs’ speech,” due to computer files consisting of code—which falls under the umbrella of free expression. Additionally, the suit asserted that “the ad hoc, informal and arbitrary manner in which that scheme is applied, violate the First, Second, and Fifth Amendments.” Under the terms of the agreement, Americans are acknowledged to have a right to “access, discuss, use, reproduce or otherwise benefit from the technical data” produced and distributed by Defense Distributed. The saga began when a proprietor of Defense Distributed, Cody Wilson, published a 53-second video in May 2013 in which he fires a strange plastic looking gun. Reason magazine explained: That video, which documented the first time a plastic gun manufactured by a 3D printer was successfully fired by a human hand, was watched 3 million times the week after it was released. The ghostly weapon, made entirely of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene thermoplastic polymer (except for a small metal nail used to strike the primer on the .380 caliber bullet) was crafted by a moving machine head on a Stratasys Dimension SST 3D printer, depositing resin in layers in accordance with computer instructions, the same way an inkjet printer churns out two-dimensional documents. 🖐🏾More in comments👇🏾#FutureTech #FutureWarfare - #regrann

3D-printed gun activist Cody Wilson indicted for sexual assault
The State of Texas has indicted Cody Wilson, a 3D-printed gun rights activist who fought to allow makers to post and print guns, of sexual assault after he had sex with a 17-year-old girl. The affidavit noted that he met the girl on a website for finding “sugar daddies.” The indictment, posted on Ars, notes that he faces “four counts of sexual assault of a child, two charges of indecency with a child by contact, and two charges of indecency with a child by exposure.”
The charges are punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
The affidavit on the crime said Wilson used the name Sanjuro on the site and that he paid the 17-year-old $500 for sex. His company, DefenseDistributed, has dumped him as founder.
Wilson is out on $150,000 bond and not yet in jail.
He rose to prominence for supporting 3D-printed guns as far back as 2013, causing a panic that reduced interest in the 3D printing industry and led to a court decision in July that found 3D printed gun plans to be legal.
