Direct from the Director, Early Spring 2019

As I enter my third month as the Frank and Clara Meditz Executive Director of the Fairfield University Art Museum, I'm excited to share with you some of what we’ve been working on! 

We’re delighted to announce that Megan Paqua is joining the museum staff as our part-time registrar. Paqua, who also teaches the Egyptian art courses at Fairfield, will be a tremendous asset to our small but mighty team. She’ll be focusing her attention on the collections and loans, and will be arriving just in time to oversee the Conservation Assessment of the James Reed Print Collection later this month. This assessment, to be performed by paper conservator Sarah Dove, is fully funded by a prestigious and competitive National Endowment for the Humanities Preservation Assistance Grant.

Opening this week in the Walsh Gallery is The Artist Collects: Highlights from the James Reed Print Collection. Curated by Michelle DiMarzo, the museum’s Curator of Education and Academic Engagement, the exhibition showcases Reed’s transformative gift of his collection of more than 1,500 prints to the museum in 2017. The selection of more than eighty prints on view in the exhibition illustrate key developments in the history of European and American printmaking over the last two centuries. On opening night, join us for a conversation with Reed and DiMarzo in the Wien Experimental Theatre, as the two discuss how the collection was shaped by Reed’s passion for lithography as well as his career as an artist and master printer. 

We've also implemented a wonderful new meditation program in the serene setting of the Bellarmine Hall Galleries! You can join us twice a month for a free guided meditation session, led by certified meditation and mindfulness teacher Jackie DeLise. No prior experience or equipment is necessary (take it from me- I meditated for the very first time ever at our first session, and found it incredibly relaxing!) The sessions take place at 4 p.m., so you can plan a visit to the museum to see the current exhibition, and then stay to meditate.

Our current exhibition in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries, A French Affair: Drawings and Paintings from the Horvitz Collection, closes on March 30th, so don’t miss out on your chance to see it! Our museum is the final venue for this exhibition, which was also shown at the Ringling Museum in Sarasota, FL, and the Cummer Museum in Jacksonville, FL.
