"Superstar" is a song written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell in 1969, performed by various artists but by far the most popular version was recorded by the Carpenters in February 1971.
Rita Coolidge came up with the original song idea, based on observing the relationships of female groupies with rock stars in the late 1960s; in its first recorded incarnation, the song was called "Groupie (Superstar)" by Delaney & Bonnie.
Richard Carpenter became aware of the song after watching Bette Midler sing it on the February 15, 1971 edition of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and quickly obtained a recording to play for his sister Karen. Intrigued, they both thought they could put a new spin on it; Because the original subject matter of the song was more risqué than was typical for them, Richard changed a lyric in the second verse from "And I can hardly wait/To sleep with you again" to the less suggestive "And I can hardly wait/To be with you again." Karen was very moved by the idea and mood of the song, and laid down her haunting vocals in a single take.
Her version of the song was widely praised for its intensity and emotional nature.  The duo decided to include it in their next album Carpenters. The single quickly climbed the charts to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US but was unable to dislodge Rod Stewart's "Maggie May" from the top spot.

Should meditate on and write about the influence of slavery and racism on African American christian philosophy... I'm thinking specifically about my dad's african american baptist pastor (not my pastor) who is a premillennialist and also said things in the pulpit that smelled suspiciously of gnosticism (I've learned to be on the look out for that stuff)...
But also I'm learning about African American Oral Tradition and it's roots in negro spirituals. Many of the songs are about escaping from slavery and oppression, but because they were forbidden from complaining about slavery at all. So they used these songs about Moses and Daniel and Jesus as a way to criticize slavery and talk about the hope for escape, liberation, and abolition. Sometimes these songs focused on abolition and justice. Other times, they focused on going to heaven after death (i.e. you can kill my body, but not my soul).
As time would go on though, we would get the prophets of 19th century America: David Walker, Sojourner Truth, Maria H. Stewart, Martin R. Delaney (ew. I'm sorry i just do not like him. wtv), Henry Highland Garnet, Frederick Douglas, Francis W. Harper, and many more I've yet to learn about. And these speakers were very concerned with the life hear and now. And also what could be termed the American Heresy or the American Idolatry: the religion of America was slavery, not Christianity. With this accusation brought into the forefront the great importance of social justice right here and now in the land of the living, not in the future with Jesus or Heaven.
So I think African American Christian Philosophy is split two ways: either really concerned with social justice (mostly in the north), or really concerned with spirituality/going to heaven when you die (mostly in the south). The problems is when these lead to cherry picking or gnosticism.

I started looking up an old Comedy Zone lineup this week because I was writing a biography of Andy Zaltzman and wanted to see who'd done that with him, and then I fell down a small rabbit hole, and now I've accidentally taken screenshots of the Comedy Zone blurb in every Edinburgh program for the 24 years it ran (1991-2014 - I think, 1991 was definitely the first and I couldn't find references to it in later programs) and then made a list in text of all the lineups by year. I've done things like this before and usually there is at least some sort of point to it, but in this case it really is just autism, I saw a chance to make a list and I took it. It's not for any larger thing. But it might be kind of fun to look at?
The Comedy Zone was a thing where Avalon picked a few of its new people and had them perform as a mixed bill in the middle of the night throughout the Edinburgh Festival. As far as I can tell it was very frequently people who had not done a solo Edinburgh show before that year, but would do their first one the following year, so they were about that level of new.
I find it slightly interesting that I've heard of at least one person in all those bills, two or three in most of them. All four in 2000, 2009, 2011, and 2007. The 2007 thing I know in further detail from John Robins' Chortle blogs that chronicled his Comedy Zone experience from that year. Blogs that I highly recommend reading (archives exist from July and from August) - to anyone who shares my weird interest in Edinburgh Festival comedy history with a specific focus on the 00s, or to anyone who thinks John Robins is too intense now, and you would like some perspective on how much farther it used to go.
Anyway, I'm quite sure the number of people I've heard of in that list of Comedy Zone performers is disproportionate, compared to if you took a Fringe program from any of those years, made a list of all the comedians in it who had never done a full solo Edinburgh show before that year, and then took four random people from that list. The fact that Avalon could consistently pick which new people were most likely to go on to be famous (at least, famous enough for me to have heard of them, as a person in Canada in 2024), even though none of them were famous when they were first picked, is a sign that Avalon is a really really good judge of talent, and/or that there is truth in the conspiracy that Avalon secretly runs all of television. Possibly a bit of both. (My favourite example of that theory is this video, where they say at the beginning "Reds were made up mostly of Avalon acts" - no one in that video was particularly famous when it was filmed but there is a notable discrepancy now in the levels of fame from one team to the other).
The list is kind of interesting to read as a timeline of when people really kicked off their comedy careers, so it might be worth opening the link below for that. But really, I just made a pointless list of names for no reason and wanted to do something with it so I've stuck it here.

Great Guitarists 100 - Pete Townshend, George Harrison, Jeff Beck, Neil Young, Robert Fripp [CROSSBEAT (November 2009)]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pete Townshend It is rare to find a guitarist with as much personality as Pete Townshend, the songwriter of The Who and the face of the band. Therefore, Pete, who rarely played solo-like solos, has long been underrated as a guitarist at a time when technical, fast-playing guitarists were beginning to attract attention in the late 1960s. His distinctive feature is not his flowing solo phrases, but in his versatile rhythm guitar and melodic riffs that are centred on chord work, and he is good at technical playing, just like a lead guitar player. It was also a rhythm-oriented style that was cultivated in a special band with a rhythm section consisting of a vocalist and a flashy drummer who worked a lot. His high-speed rhythm cutting, typified in 'Pinball Wizard', is a technique unique to him, and his rhythmic sharpness is exceptional when he picks with all his might, even with an acoustic guitar. He also invented the 'windmill technique', in which he plays chords with a wide arm swivel, a technique that has influenced many guitarists. His violent performances, especially live, in which he is inspired by loud drumming to become more extreme and finally destroys his guitar, are the very essence of rock and punk impulses, and the band's performance has a wide range of appeal, from delicate beauty to aggressive, bombastic noise. -Yoshihiro Hoshina
Representative albums "Tommy" (1969) The Who "Live At Leeds" (1970) "Who's Next" (1971, photo)
George Harrison The youngest of the Beatles' members, George was able to join the Beatles because he could play the highly technical 'Raunchy' to perfection. However, in his early work, he could only play a few hair-raising solos in his country and western roots, and was not a better guitarist than his peers Clapton and Page, let alone Paul in the same band (although he did bring a Rickenbacker 12-string to the band, which was a big influence on The Byrds). It was, again, from the mid-period onwards that he became more of a presence. He studied sitar with Ravi Shankar, and transferred its essence to his guitar playing and songwriting. In his later years, he became friends with Clapton, Delaney & Bonnie and others, and finally developed his own style after the break-up of the Beatles. In this sense, he could be described as a "late-blooming guitarist". -Takanori Kuroda
Representative albums Abbey Road (1969, photo) The Beatles All Things Must Pass (1970) George Harrison
Jeff Beck Jeff Beck was one of the top three guitarists of the 1960s in terms of technique alone. He is a solitary guitarist who continues to challenge himself only with guitar instrumentation. His steel-hard sound, tricky phrasing, astonishingly fast playing and compositions rich in ideas are like no one else. In the 60s and 70s, he was in the Yardbirds and led the Jeff Beck Group, which also included Rod Stewart, but was still unable to support the vocalist. It was inevitable that he ended up with a guitar-playing-only style on "Blow by Blow". The lack of singing means that he has not gained mass support, but it is astonishing that he is still at the forefront of his field, given the current status of the other two of the big three guitarists (Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page). He is one of the few active guitarists who really fits the term 'genius guitarist', a term that is often used too easily. -Akihiko Yamamoto

Neil Young Whether in his guitar battles with Stephen Stills in Buffalo Springfield and CSN&Y (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young), or in his solo career, Neil has always been a dual-playing acoustic and electric guitarist. In contrast to the bright, beautiful tone of his Martin D45 and D28 acoustic guitars, when he picks up an electric guitar he plays with such intensity that it's no wonder he was dubbed the 'Godfather of Grunge' in the 1990s and went on collaborating with bands such as Sonic Youth. It's no surprise that the band has become such an intense performance. The heavy use of distortion, feedback and vibrato amps is something Neil probably learnt from his beloved Jimi Hendrix, but his playing is never as fluid as Jimi's. Instead, it has a rugged ruggedness that is typical of Neil, as if he is knocking down obstacles as he goes along. There is a beautiful, sad lyricism in the swirling intensity of his bombast. -Tadashi Igarashi
Representative Albums "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" (1969, photo) Neil Young "Live Rust" (1979)
Robert Fripp A long time ago, Robert Fripp of the long-established prog rock band King Crimson surprised everyone concerned when he suddenly started practising guitar in his hotel room immediately after arriving in Japan. He is an extremely stoic guitarist who still practises several hours every day in the belief that accurate and excellent playing is the result of daily discipline. His technical playing is characterised by a sequencer-like precision in fast, repetitive phrases with complex variations, and he has developed his own "Frippertronics" and "Soundscape" to utilise this playing. He has also released experimental works such as environmental music and minimal music, including collaborations with Brian Eno. His particular style of playing has been passed on to Argentinian guitarist Fernando Kabusacki, among others. -Yoshihiro Hoshina

Top 10 guitarists by genre: folk/trad/country (3/ James Burton), who also played in Presley's band, was one of the pioneers of country rock guitar, using banjo strings to facilitate choking. An innovator of the bluegrass guitar, (2/ Clarence White) joined The Byrds and, even after taking up the electric as his main instrument, he digested (3/ James Burton)'s influences and developed the string bender, which he played with such originality that even Hendrix and Jimmy Page were surprised by it. (9/ Albert Lee), who replaced (3/ James Burton) in Emmylou Harris' band, was a master of the country style despite being British, and Clapton recruited him into the band; (5/ Davey Graham), who invented DADGAD tuning [aka Celtic tuning] in the English folk world of the 60s and also incorporated jazz and Indian music influences; Pentangle's (4/ Bert Jansch), who influenced Page and Neil Young, was also active. It was (1/ Richard Thompson), also a founding member of Fairport Convention, who integrated British folk and US country rock and developed his own style in both acoustic and electric music. The musical leader of CSN&Y (7/ Stephen Stills) revolutionised the use of the acoustic guitar in rock. A pioneering female singer-songwriter (8/ Joni Mitchell) was also known for the various irregular tunings she devised, which influenced her close CSN&Y (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young) colleagues. Eccentric folk-blues guitarist (6/ John Fahey) was re-evaluated by Jim O'Rourke and others in his later years as the originator of acoustic music. A member of Alison Krauss's band, (10/ Jerry Douglas) is a master of the dobro guitar, exploring the possibilities of the dobro guitar. -Tadashi Igarashi

Today's compilation:
Baby Boomer Classics: Live, Vol. 2 1989 Hard Rock / Blues-Rock / Southern Rock
Yeah, man, I really hate to sound like a crusty, corny fuck who waxes nostalgic about them good ol' classic rock days, but as it turns out, I've got two words for you all today (or maybe it's actually just one word?): "Free Bird." "Free. Bird." "FREE. BIRD." "🆓 🐦!"
Yes, it's one of the most played songs from the most overrepresented genre of music that modern America has ever known—classic rock—but it's a total beaut', and although I've heard the studio version of it more times than I count, the 14-plus minute live rendition of it that appears on this Baby Boomer Classics comp is really something else.
Well, actually, that's not entirely true. For a pretty significant portion of this performance, there's not too much to distinguish it from the original studio version to really make it worth a listen. But then Skynyrd launch into the unanimously agreed upon best part of the whole entire song: that extended, uptempo, virtuosic guitar portion, which is when they *really* manage to wring the fucker out, playing all the familiar bits that made the studio version such a benchmark in the first place, while weaving in new touches to keep us all captivatedly on our toes. This is probably the most popular live rendition of "Free Bird," but if you've never heard it before, ya gotta listen to it. It's just such transcendent classic rock bliss 😌 (and, um, apologies in advance for any depictions of the…confederate flag…that you may find in the video I'm linking to at the bottom of this post. I tried to avoid it, but that video has the closest track length to the version that's on this comp…😒)
And while nothing on here quite outdoes that spectacular finale, Rod Stewart & the Faces' opener, "Stay With Me," is pretty excellent as well. Lovely combo of piano and British blues-rock guitar fuzz paired with Sir Rod's own signature scratchy vocal, and with a sweet and jaunty jam in the second half too. Great vibes all around there 😎.
Wouldn't say that everything on here is great, but I still think that this is a whole lot better than the other Baby Boomer Classics: Live volume that's in this series. Not a single song on that other volume hits quite like some of the best songs on this one 🤘.
Highlights:
Rod Stewart & The Faces - "Stay With Me" Procol Harum - "El Conquistador" Delaney & Bonnie - "Comin' Home" The Allman Brothers Band - "One Way Out" Lynyrd Skynyrd - "Freebird"
