As shoppers move away from Big Four amid cost-of-living crisis, C-stores stand a considerably good chance to attract the displaced shoppers.

As cost-of-living crisis continues to force Britons to look for cheaper avenues, industry players and experts believe that local convenience stores- with the right mix of offerings- stand a good chance to gain more customers in these tough times.

As grocery inflation touches 13.9 per cent and shoppers face a £643 jump in their annual grocery bill, consumers are looking for all the possible ways to manage budgets- from switching to own label products to buying more canned food and wonky vegetables.

Apart from these practices, a large chunk of shoppers is seen ditching their usual shopping destination in search for better venues- places that can give them better value for their money. According to Kantar September data, Asda saw additional 417,000 customers through its doors over the 12-week period.

What is making shoppers switch? What are they looking for? According to new research from American Express, 77 per cent of Britons are increasingly focused on value for money, with almost seven in 10 (68 per cent) believing that retailers could do more to help counter rising prices. The research adds that 23 per cent of shoppers are seeking out best deals rather than sticking with their usual retailers.

Sarah Coleman, Director of Communications at TWC, claims that value is the number one priority right now among shoppers.

“Consumers are adopting many tactics to manage their grocery spend and this will include trading down, whether that’s across the board or in certain categories where the perception is that quality is less important,” Coleman told Asian Trader.

Shoppers are indeed increasingly seeking better value for money, quality, and convenience during the current economic climate.

According to Dael Links, head of Snappy Shopper, the top priorities for shoppers are price point, convenience with home delivery and sustainability.

Dhillon tells retailers to focus on initiatives that are adding real value, not just ticking boxes with suppliers. Own label ranges will be really valuable to retailers right now.

The highlights of local C-stores are quick access and convenience. In the current environment, it becomes more important for retailers to offer discounts and cashbacks to earn shoppers’ loyalty.

Coleman from TWC points out how around one in three shoppers are a member of a grocer’s loyalty scheme. However, uptake is highest amongst older shoppers only while younger shoppers, who are most likely to feel the inflation pinch, are still left out.

To continue to succeed, Coleman feels that convenience store retailers need to understand what their customer base wants, and it will have to be about “more than just lower prices” if there is a discounter nearby.

“Whilst consumers generally accept a price differential in convenience, the current pressure on household budgets will undoubtedly be putting this under greater scrutiny. This means that price marked packs play an important role in providing value reassurance,” she said.

Loyalty schemes are becoming a key differentiator for consumers. The research by American Express too talks about loyalty schemes, claiming that 52 per cent of consumers say they are more likely to shop with a retailer that has a loyalty scheme, and 61 per cent believe retailers can do more when it comes to rewards.

Steve Moore, head of retail at Parfetts, states that loyalty schemes are a great way of retaining consumers.

“At Parfetts, we work tirelessly to ensure our promotions add a real point of difference to our symbol estate whilst also delivering competitive margins for our retailers,” he told Asian Trader.

Deacon from Jisp too feels that loyalty schemes are proven propositions to help retailers, brands and shoppers as they help shoppers “shop, be rewarded, personalise deals and create a direct conversation between the scheme (retailer)”.

Apart from better prices and loyalty schemes, C-stores need to up their game overall too, especially when it comes to home delivery and e-commerce.

Links from Snappy Shopper believes that providing outstanding customer service and a personal touch elevate local store above “faceless supermarkets”.

Home delivery is an essential part of the future success of convenience stores, Links told Asian Trader, adding that such a service enable them to widen their community network and future-proof their business against the competition.

“It has grown significantly in recent years, driven predominantly by the increase in consumer demand. And multiple consumer habits established over the past two years look set to stay, so offering this service brings many benefits to stores, beyond increased sales, profit, and customer loyalty. It also enables them to reach a much larger customer audience,” he said.

Home delivery is so convenient for today’s consumers, yet some convenience retailers lack the manpower and expertise to initiate the service and could therefore be losing out, Link said.

However, it is one of the easiest forms of expanding customer base.

“According to our retailer network, around 80 per cent of their customers who use the Snappy Shopper app were acquired through the platform and would never have visited their physical store,” Links said.

Bring it On

Retail environment is set to become even more competitive, presenting local stores with newer opportunities to engage customers and drive loyalty- a fact that most industry voices, from retail experts to service providers to data analysts, believe firmly.

Deacon from Jisp strongly believes that indies have an edge in this new tussle.

“Independents can move quicker and be even more competitive on convenience for shopper, price and rewards whilst ensuring they are maintaining or growing margins in doing so,” he said.

Local stores can offer great service, value, rewards, and availability, then “communicating the hell out of it locally”, Deacon from Jisp said, adding that the Big Four can’t do this at a hyper local level.

Referring back to American Express research’s findings, claiming that 65 per cent of those surveyed value businesses that accommodate last-minute purchases and quick delivery, local retailers need to offer a positive customer experience to stay ahead of competitors.

Coleman from TWC feels C-store can play to their strengths through these difficult times by being a go-to convenient choice in their local area and offering exceptional customer service.

“It can be both time and cost efficient to shop local for many different reasons, including cost of travel, avoiding impulse purchase made in major supermarkets, and time taken,” she told Asian Trader.

Episode 14: Piecemeal

Not fully settled in yet, but I do have intermittent access to an internet-connected computer, so....

In this week’s episode I get the statement of one Lee Rentoul, who (in stark contrast to Trevor Herbert) apparently very much minds whether his crimes are reported to the police. Thanks to the experience of a pal of his named Hester, he’s hoping the fine folks down at the Magnus Institute will tell him there’s a perfectly normal explanation for whatever’s going on with him. Given that this statement’s one of the ones being recorded on cassette, I’m guessing they won’t be able to tell him what he wants to hear.

...Well, not honestly, anyway.

According to Lee Rentoul, he killed a coworker in crime by the name of Paul Noriega. “Stabbed him in the throat and left him to bleed out on the dockside,” he says, which does sound fun, though not being able to stay and observe seems a bit of a shame.

Apparently Lee Rentoul and Paul Noriega were picked up by the police after kicking in the head of someone called McMullen. Lee blames Paul for the escalation from assault to grievous bodily harm—whatever the case, Paul walked free while Lee got five years in prison, which led to a certain amount of resentment on the part of our statement-giver.

Stabbing Paul Noriega in the throat was, it seems, not Plan A.

Lee Rentoul got out of prison in June 2010. Being on parole meant if he wanted Paul hurt it’d be easiest to have someone else do it. He did try to get a face-to-face with his ex-partner, but ended up confronting Paul Noriega’s hired security instead.

So Lee Rentoul goes to visit his victim, Toby McMullen... who’s been having trouble turning his head since the GBH five years ago.

Unexpectedly, Toby also has it in for Paul.

It seems Paul, previous to his arrest, visited Toby in the hospital and promised him all the narcotics in the world if he’d only tell the police Lee kicked his head in, not Paul. Ah, so it was premeditated betrayal! How lovely.

Paul Noriega, however, did not deliver on his promise. Toby McMullen, therefore, has been plotting revenge.

...His planned revenge is magical in nature.

Lee, understandably dismissing this as useless druggie nonsense, punches Toby in the stomach and turns to leave. But Toby is persistent. Following Lee, “doubled over and struggling for breath,” he insists that this is for real, that he knows someone with real power, that all he needs is the money.

Lee Rentoul (for reasons unknown to himself, it seems), listens.

There is, Toby claims, a powerful person named Angela. He was told about her by an acquaintance who used this Angela’s services on a “particularly unpleasant ex-boyfriend”—who was never seen again.

Lee figures this Angela is a killer for hire who likes to pose as a magic user, which is fine by him. So he lets Toby take him to Angela’s place.

Angela’s house is in the suburbs. It has faded floral print wallpaper, dark oak furniture, and threadbare carpets. The walls are decorated with framed jigsaw puzzles (which is a thing I’ve seen often in retirement homes; I’ve even contributed to a few; jigsaws are fun). The living room features a worn cloth sofa, and a coffee table with another puzzle in the works.

The fabled Angela is an apparently sweet old lady in a lilac dressing gown.

Lee Rentoul is furious.

“I was so angry at this massive waste of my time that, when she offered us a cup of coffee, I almost put McMullen face-first through the glass table in front of us,” our statement-giver says—but personally I find this all very convincing. A truly dangerous person may put off an aura of danger, yes... but many won’t. Be wary of the pleasant, soft-spoken and polite people you meet; you don’t know what they’re smiling at.

“When she asked if I wanted Paul Noriega dead, I nearly choked.

About an hour later, Saleesa and his men leave. They still have the box with them, and don’t seem happy, so I suppose the deal didn’t go as hoped.

Paul Noriega, leaning against a pile of bricks, is smoking. He turns when he hears Lee enter, saying something about reconsidering and lowering the price (which I suppose means he couldn’t afford what Saleesa was selling), then sees that the person he’s facing is Lee Rentoul.

Ha. I know precisely what he means.

Paul tries to run away, but his leg betrays him and he trips over the bricks instead. Lee grabs him by the collar, knife already out, and drags him up while he pleads with his old coworker to wait, to listen, not to stab him. He has his hand up, and Lee notices that he’s missing two fingers (and has, apparently, been missing them for some time... though Lee doesn’t remember him being down any fingers when they worked together).

Lee Rentoul does not, however, pay much attention to this at the moment (which is understandable, I think). He says he stabbed Paul multiple times—so I suppose he was understating when he said he cut Paul’s throat.

Once he’s calmed down a bit, Lee notices that his unfriend is missing more than a few fingers.

Paul Noriega’s left eye is glass, he doesn’t have all of his teeth, and though Lee doesn’t mention it I wonder what caused that limp. Strangely, the corpse seems to be smiling.

Lee Rentoul, I gather, did not leave Paul Noriega to bleed out. After stabbing him repeatedly and breaking his head by dropping him onto a pile of bricks, it looks as though Lee chopped Paul’s body up and scattered the pieces. “...even if the cops did find any piece of Noriega’s corpse, they wouldn’t be able to pin it on me,” he says. Paul’s hired security looks for Lee for a while, but Lee lies low and eventually they leave it and look for someone else to pay them.

But five days after the murder, Lee gets a package.

He’s out and about, in a place he doesn’t usually go (Tottenham Marshes near the reservoir, wherever that is), and finds a small box wrapped in brown paper and tied up with string sitting in the middle of a metal bridge. It’s addressed to him.

He opens it to find a black cardboard box containing cotton wool... and a single severed finger.

Now, that’s interesting! Lee assumes it’s a threat from someone or other—but who would know to put it right there, right then? Too early and someone else might take it; too late and Lee would never see it. Too on the dot, and the delivery might be seen. No, this doesn’t seem like average human work to me. And I do appreciate how tidy it is! Such neat packaging. It deserved better, I think, than to have the finger thrown into a canal and the box set on fire and discarded.

Heading home, Lee keeps his eyes open and his hand on his knife. He’s so busy looking around him, in fact, that he fails to see the hole in front of him until he’s tripped and fallen; and he must have been gripping his knife rather incautiously, because he manages to cut his pinky finger clean off.

Lee Rentoul screams, and immediately begins tearing up his shirt to improvise a makeshift bandage that’ll stop the bleeding.

I admire his presence of mind. I like people who see a situation for what it is, accept it, and immediately take steps appropriate to their new circumstances. This is a thing I find eminently admirable.

In this case, however, it’s bafflingly unneeded.

The bleeding has already stopped. In fact the wound is closed: healed as though the injury took place years ago.

Not knowing what to make of this, Lee Rentoul decides to go home and deal with things after he’s had some sleep. Upon arriving at his apartment, however, he finds another brown paper package tied up with string.

This one contains two toes.

Lee Rentoul tries very hard. He is very careful. But his flatscreen falls off the wall while he’s adjusting settings, lands on his foot, and....

In two weeks, it seems, he’s lost four more fingers, most of his toes, an eye, a whole lot of teeth, and—wait, a hand? Then he’s lost nine more fingers, hasn’t he? Unless the hand he lost was the one already missing a finger. All five fingers, then the hand... yes, that would make sense.

Whatever the case, he had to go to the hospital... and did not return to the Institute afterwards.

However, we found very little (if any) correlation between keyword-optimized title tags and higher rankings on the first page.”

Google may delay its move to complete mobile-first indexing by September, depending on how sites are managing due to the recent disruptions.

As ad prices are dropping for some items on some platforms, it has become easier for small businesses to start campaigns, especially experienced online sellers who can now take advantage of the ecommerce boom. ECOMMERCE NEWS, IDEAS, TRENDS 

Many ecommerce platforms/website providers are being pressured to reduce the fake COVID-19 disinfectants on their sites, including eBay, Facebook, Shopify & Alibaba.

There is a new app that lets buyers shop with multiple businesses who run their sites through Shopify, called Shop. Among other things, it will feature businesses local to the user: “A recent survey of global consumers by Ernst & Young found that 34% of respondents are willing to pay more for local products amid the pandemic.”

Shopify’s stock is flying high right now, and it has become the second-most valuable company in Canada, in part due to the surge of sign ups after the start of the pandemic. 

Since page loading speed is important to buyer conversions as well as SEO, if you have a Shopify site, you will want to read about which themes are the fastest & slowest to load. A few are ridiculously slow, & you will want to consider your goals if you are thinking of using them. 

Jeff Bezos has moved back to managing Amazon operations due to the pandemic. “Bezos was also personally involved in Amazon’s decision to suspend third-party vendors from shipping non-essential items to Amazon’s warehouses, helping ease the load on workers so that they could more efficiently ship goods like baby products, groceries, pet supplies and personal care products.  He also signed off on Amazon’s move to halt tactics it normally uses “to encourage customers to put more items in their shopping carts”.

Meanwhile, Amazon VP states that Amazon has done a lot for sellers during the pandemic, including suspending “repayment of all Amazon Lending loans for sellers in the United States and the United Kingdom until April 30.” I guess that is why their profit fell to only $2.5 billion in the first quarter of 2020 despite their gross sales being up 29% due to the pandemic buying. 

Amazon’s pilot program for verifying new sellers by video calls is continuing; contrary to previous reports, they say they are not using facial-recognition technology, but they are checking photo ID against the video call. 

eBay has extended its suspension of most seller performance standard rules until June 19 for sellers in the UK. They are also extending their free listing offers, and after banning mask sales are now apparently envying Etsy’s sales and are encouraging sellers to make fabric masks.They are also planning a way to confirm sales that involve local pickups [podcast & transcript]. 

eBay had lower 1st quarter results than they & others had predicted, so the stock went down. Here is the call transcript for those interested.

The pandemic sales trends have switched from hoarding essentials to food & home comfort items. “As spring eased toward summer, cooking at home also began to include gardening. "We see continued growth in gardening," said Ventry. ... Growing herbs, he said, played well with the home cooking trend, too. "We saw similar trends from 2008 to 2010, during the recession."

Ecommerce sales are way up, perhaps 50% up in the US right now, and some of these people will continue their increased online shopping, so it is a good time to launch many types of new campaigns. (warnings - some “not safe for work” language) 

HubSpot has been producing a weekly pandemic report on its customers core business stats, such as website traffic & sales rates. They speculate that we might be seeing a bit of an overall recovery as of last week.

Because of a technical error, we don't have video of our most recent D&D session. This is a crying shame, because there was some fantastic RP in it. However, it does mean that I have to give up the bullet point format in favour of something a little more narrative to compensate.

After their fairly brief reconnoitre and delivery of the reagents for the dragon-slayer weapon and a couple of other bits and pieces, the Cupcake Coterie went back to Hearthhome to consider options. They still didn't know where Twilly and the kids were being held, they still didn't know where Miranda and Lira were, and all they really knew was that things were bad. Planning needed to happen and more information needed to be got. The only person they could guarantee knew things was the seneschal, but asking him was pretty obviously out of the question, which left them with a couple of options - violence, or infiltration. They eventually went for infiltration, with those the seneschal hadn't seen in person (Remi, Nai, Ava and Alisaie) visiting the manor as traveling entertainers to provide a distraction while Darvin, Hazel and Froseth tried to sneak into the seneschal's office to search for clues. Amusingly, Alisaie recommended that Nai play the part of a mute who communicated solely through his silent images. This amused people. Meantime, since they weren't going to turn up at dawn, they had breakfast, reassured the kids and then decided to approach information-gathering from their own unique perspectives.

Darvin, who had been in the manor before, tried to draw a floor plan based on what he remembered. Unfortunately, as a manor boy who'd grown up in far more ambitious dwellings, he couldn't really imagine a manor as the dinky building Goldendale calls the baronial manor. Also he'd only been in the building three times, only seen the reception hall and one of the guest rooms, and he was angry as hell the first two times he'd been there. Translation - he rolled poorly. End result - his attempt at a floor plan was not helpful but at least he was pretty sure he could find the seneschal's office window to sneak into.

Hazel, with help from their new drow friend Shinyra, searched the Hearthhome basement, where Twilly and Miranda keep all the bits and pieces left over from their mercenary days (and probably then some, in Miranda's case). Hazel, very concerned about her parental figures, was hunting up clues for how in the world two people as competent as Miranda and Lira could vanish without trace - if they'd gone to rescue Twilly and the kids, someone would have heard the commotion when a fight broke out, and there was no way either of them would die easily and bloodlessly. Hazel did find what she was looking for in that vein, however much she hated the idea - a book of spells that mentioned Plane Shifting. Shinyra, a bit more able to keep on track due to lack of personal investment, found something a lot more generally useful: a written guide to the dragons found on the continent, from the Five Claws of Bahamut to King Jain Nerrand III and way beyond.

Nai spoke to his patrons, and got a visit from the Herald of the Lord and Lady, who still hasn't given a name. The Herald provided a couple of cryptic clues, and then said that the Lord and Lady would offer a favour: intervention on one aspect of their champion's current troubles for a service to be determined later. While Nai wanted to give an immediate answer to which of the many aspects of their current task needed his patrons' intervention, the Herald recommended that he speak to the rest of the Cupcake Coterie before deciding.

Froseth turned to the elements. After some thought, he went with air - warnings, whispers on the wind. He got word that the green dragon running things while Baron Langerhan is so ill was about to start executing the kids, starting with Candor; that the dragon they're dealing with is of a significant size; and a couple of things he didn't understand - an acrid smell like poison mixed with dried blood.

Remi, meanwhile, consulted higher powers in her own way. This time, she didn't approach Tritherion: she called on the solar to whom she unwittingly pact-bonded herself to resurrect Alisaie. The solar in question let her sort of mentally project herself into the Celestial Plane (no, @hyperewok1 - she was not there physically) for a fairly heavy and entirely unexpected conversation that ended with Remi being offered a bargain - travel no further down the path of her Oath of Vengeance and devote her path fully to the guidance of Pelor's right hand, and gain a different kind of power - a power that went beyond vengeance to justice, to making things right, to renewal ... even the rebirth of the now-dead Star Coast, given time and help from Hazel and Alisaie. Remi accepted, and as token of her bargain, she received a couple of boons straight away - temporary access to an invocation that allows her use of Mage Armor, and Pact of the Blade just over a full level early. After a chat with Alisaie (and Alisaie's assertion that 'father' or not, if the solar messes with Remi, Alisaie will punch him in the face), they decided not to mention to anyone, particularly Darvin, that Star Coast could be brought back to life - not yet, at least. They had enough to worry about.

When they regrouped for lunch and shared all - or at least most - of what they'd learned, the group voted unanimously to use the boon Nai's patrons had offered to find Miranda and Lira and get them out of whatever mess they were in. When Nai asked the Herald back, the Herald confirmed that Miranda and Lira had been plane-shifted, although they didn't know where to yet, but Nai's Lord and Lady will find them and bring them back, with the price to be decided later - a combination of "We don't know how much effort it's going to take to find them and we won't be short-changed", "We don't know what state they'll be in when we find them and we do need to keep you somewhat happy with our bargains so we'd best not entirely short-change you", and "We can just keep them in our domain if you refuse our bargain and negotiations get protracted". Either no one thought of that or none of them even considered refusing the price for something so important to them.

Meantime, Alisaie had gone through the stories Darvin had told her and come up with a potential ally that no one had considered - Bareris, the very old elven artist with at least some magic who hadn't been spoken of by anyone since their arrival. They thought he might be hiding, so they got Geloe to deliver a note to Estan, who in turn would leave it in the same place as the weapons for Bareris to pick up, so that maybe he could help them not have to try to infiltrate the manor as a split party. No one was big on the idea of splitting the party. The plan was to start split up - Remi, Nai, Ava and Alisaie walking right through the centre of town, with Darvin, Hazel and Froseth sneaking the long way around the town borders - until they needed to collect the weapons, see if Bareris responded to their message, and re-evaluate with the new information. That settled, they made their preparations, said their good-byes and headed out.

Hazel, Froseth and particularly Darvin rolled exceptionally on stealth and were not spotted. Remi did very well with her subterfuge even without Alisaie's help selling the bit, and in fact got quite into it at the end there, and successfully talked them all past the heavy Crownsguard presence in the town. Either way, they got through to where their new weapons were hidden without a hitch. It seemed that Bareris had left them a note, and a rendezvous site away from the main drag. They convened there and met with Bareris, who had apparently been watching things unfold from a safe distance. He said that Twilly, Keth, Candor and Skylar had been taken to Vendren's Hold, which had been repurposed as a jail and magically trapped, and that there was no information on the nature of the traps in the seneschal's office lest his hypocrisy be exposed. Bareris offered to lead them to the seneschal's home, where such information might be found. They agreed with little in the way of hesitation; Ava side-eyed him, but didn't see any reason to distrust him beyond "I haven't met him and he's unreasonably twitchy", and no one could be blamed for being unreasonably twitchy in the current circumstances. Alisaie was more cursory about her once-over of Bareris, but if the rest trusted him, she was going to go along.

Bareris led them through the forest, which became increasingly claustrophobic, labyrinthine and mist-choked as they passed, and Froseth caught a smell he'd forgotten to mention to the others - the acrid smell of poison ... and dried blood. They lost track of Bareris - or the man they thought was Bareris - when they found the body of the real Bareris, covered in dried blood, pinned to a tree by sharp branches and overlong thorns. They were so focused on Coryvel as the senschal that they apparently thought that he could switch disguises if he felt the need. Apparently, he had, and Coryvel as Bareris had led the party directly into his lair.

Missed opportunities:

When speaking to Nai, the Herald did say that the eyes could not always be trusted. When servants of Archfey try to warn you of a thing, maybe take it to heart.

Had Froseth chosen fire instead of air as his focus element, he would have seen the true nature of disguised folks that they needed to know about, and would have seen Coryvel's current disguise.

The smell of poison mixed with dried blood, which Froseth didn't mention (I think because @miaaoi forgot about it in the face of the potential execution of children).

No one asked anyone in town about Bareris when doing their inventory of people around town. The surviving faerie dragons didn't mention him at all, and they liked "the drawy-man", so they should have. And the party might have found out a lot more had they taken some time to look in on the Golden Bough.

Anyway, to sum up, Coryvel offered to free Candor and Keth and let them, the Cupcake Coterie and the rest of the Hearthhome children get out of the country. To be fair, I didn't expect them to go for that. To be even more fair, I would have been interested to see them try to find a way to include Skylar and Twilly in that. But ... no, there were dead faerie dragons and a dead artist and terrified kids and Miranda and Lira sent gods-knew-where. They weren't negotiating. They weren't asking questions. (They may regret that someday.) They weren't backing down from, "You go away and give us our family back or we will straight-up murder you". Alisaie flagged up their dracolich kill and her own solo dragon kill. Darvin simply said, "You may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but you'd make a spoon jealous!" ... which kind of makes less sense the more I think about it, but never mind. Alisaie popped the wings (it's always nice when she can do that without blowing a combat round to do so) and ... well, we didn't have any time to start getting into it so we ended it there. Next session, initiative rolls and straight into combat. With an adult green dragon. In his lair. And also the dragon has spells.

This is going to be fun.

The Wealth Of Nations and 21st Century Socialism

If we were to seriously consider the socialist prerogatives suggested by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her supporters in New York City, we would stand on Adam Smth's Wealth of Nations as a platform in refuting and ridiculing the notion that a capitalist nation such as America could change its historic course as a paradigm of free trade, division of labor and national productivity. Ocasio-Cortez supports progressive policies such as a government-controlled medical industry, tuition-free public college and trade school, federal job guarantees, guaranteed family leave, the abolition of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the privatization of prisons. They would also be a revision of gun control statutes, and an energy policy relying on 100% renewables. She also plans to use Modern Monetary Theory as an economic strategy to provide funding and enable implementation of these goals. In this discussion we shall examine the absurdity of these goals and the historic and economic precedents that condemn these notions to futility.

The arguments against a government-controlled medical industry are overwhelming. For starters we must ask why the best and brightest scholars from around the planet come to America to realize their destinies. In most cases it is not the aesthetics of our modernized nation or its bill of rights. Rather it is the opportunity to be rewarded for their genius and the opportunity to find a rewarding career. A lifetime of contribution in socialist nations such as China and Russia provide little more than improved housing, extended social privileges and exponential material rewards. The State sets ages and rewards according to its need, and anything sought by the applicant exceeding the standard will be arbitrarily rejected by the bureaucracy. Once Cortez's State controls are in place, the engineers, technicians and physicians will head to greener pastures, in all likelihood the European Union or Israel.

Once the American medical industry has become lobotomized, the socialist government will join those at the international auction block seeking the cheapest prices for products and services. No longer will American citizens benefit from state-of-the-art equipment, the world's best facilities or the latest pharmaceutical discoveries or medical treatments. Those who have devoted their lives to research and development will not seek compensation according to a socialist pay scale.

Skeptics will do well to consider the medical industry in Canada or the government-controlled Veterans' Administration in America. Canadian patients find themselves shortchanged by voucher systems, unable to schedule appointments at overbooked facilities, or obtain needed products and supplies at local facilities. American military veterans find themselves in similar predicaments in the majority of cases. Legislation in certain states has provided out-of-network services for veterans that allow them to seek medical aid outside of the government system. Otherwise they find themselves victimized by identical State-run institutions on both sides of the border.

Tuition-free public college and trade school are also a socialist pipe dream. All scholars know that the upper-level paper trail starts with the thesis essay. At this juncture they know that their success is precipitated by their writing skills. On the doctorate level, they are required to submit an essay that is deemed worthy of publication. From thereon, their acceptance as an associate professor at a college or university will require them to publish on a regular basis. Here they realize that their work can earn money on the open market. Only in America can a scholar hope to bring his credentials from his homeland and possibly receive a million-dollar signing bonus.

Obviously every scholar coming to the USA cannot expect a major score just by accepting a position at a major university. Yet he can continue to publish and hope that his dreams will be realized. During that time, his track record at his workplace gives him the authenticity he needs in order to pursue his goals. This allows American colleges to reap the benefits as these unsung innovators await discovery. If these opportunities were not available, these pedants would seek broader horizons. An entry-level socialist wage would never attract the kind of scholar that American colleges do now.

            Let us digress to the dawn of man when primitive tribes of neanderthals were bartering as their villages expanded to where their proximity became too close to ignore. A tribal chief bringing a sack of potatoes to the border would expect his counterpart to bring him a bag of carrots of the same size. When a third tribe makes its presence known, they will accept his offering of wheat. Only the day comes when his offer shifts, and this is where socialism fails.

          The wheat offerer brings loaves of baked bread, and here is where the discourse changes. We now have the labor cost of the bakers who produced the bread. It is doubtful that the chiefs will reject the offer of bread, so now the bread chief will have the opportunity to name his price. And so it goes. The only option for a socialist system will be for the villages to join together to make the bread as equal a trading option as the produce. The bread chief would be a fool to agree. And only by violence could he be forced to submit.

As Adam Smith pontificates, there is no point where a sovereign body will acquiesce to their detriment. They will demand reciprocation for their contribution. Paradoxically, this is the opposite of what America has done since the turn of the century. We have given excruciatingly more in building empires and propagating democracy than any nation in history. The only reciprocations have been political: we expect our allies to vote our way at the United Nations and provide access to trade routes or staging areas for military operations. Only we have gotten less and less in return over the decades. Finally Donald Trump has come to collect some old debts. Cortez wishes to maintain the status quo for everyone but Americans.

Federal job guarantees will do nothing more than assure Americans of greater sub-standard government agency service than ever. Since the end of World War II, Federal and State agencies have been increasingly filled by those seeking job security and, in many cases, permanency. It has long been a standard maxim that, once acquiring a government job, one is set for life. The benefits are guaranteed for as long as the government exists. The starting pay is competitive; however, the annual raises leave much to be desired. As a result, most move on to the private sector in time. Those who remain do so for lasting job stability.

This results in an overabundance of workers unable or unwilling to achieve higher stations in life. Added to such ranks are unemployed workers conveyed directly into the application process. Many have failed in previous endeavors and were expecting to receive benefits before being siphoned back into the workforce. In both cases, their attitudes are reflected in their level of customer service. Most citizens needing government assistance will minimize their contact with such personnel, leading to a lighter burden for the agencies to bear.

This endemic philosophy of the bureaucracy has plagued the greater socialist nations such as Russia and China. Their citizens grow desperate in seeking government assistance only to find little or none forthcoming. It is little wonder why the black market thrives in such conditions, or unlicensed providers are able to flourish. We can also invoke Adam Smith's principles in citing the need for overachievement in the private sector. An enterprise that does not seek to compete or improve the quality of its products or services is doomed to failure. Workers who have no tangible interest in the success or failure of their employer soon become disenthused. Soon they grow mechanical in satisfactorily completing their daily assignments. If Americans are dissatisfied with government bureaucracy at this point, under Cortez it may well become far worse.

          Guaranteed family leave is a Pandora's Box that, included with socialist policies including pro-choice agendas, might well result in profligation by way of the most sinister of ulterior motives. It is well known that socialists in the US are advocating the most extreme policies, including the abortion option at any point up to the time of delivery. This disregard for the sanctity of human life is further reflected by discussion as to whether or not a mother and her physician could agree to withhold life sustaining treatment. In essence, this means leaving the newborn alone to die. This can be legitimized by any possibility of risk to the mother's health, either physical or mental. A woman fearing post-partum depression can exercise the right at will.

We cannot rule out the possibility of recipients taking advantage of this system. A female could well plan a pregnancy to be termed in advance, filing a claim for paid leave of absence. Most doctors will agree to recommend extended time off for the patient to recuperate. This conveniently allows one to carry the fetus up to a planned time, in which they can have the abortion before taking leave. 

The abolition of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement seems to be in conjunction with the New World Order's objective of establishing a globalist system. Without a Federal enforcement agency in place to prosecute immigration law offenders, it overburdens an already overwhelmed bureaucracy. In essence, it creates a porous border system that has already been proven relatively ineffective in preventing the ongoing alien invasion. Repeat offenders routinely include drug smugglers, human traffickers and career criminals. According to Adam Smith, our inability to protect our workers and our industries of these hazards will inevitably result in unsustainable loss.

One of the greatest dilemmas facing agriculturalists is that of illegal immigration. For over a half century, farmers have been able to employ undocumented workers en masse to meet market demand and lower their operating costs. One factor is the reluctance of Americans to accept arduous labor jobs for minimum wage. Another is the economy of paying workers off the books in cash for a set price. Most workers are glad to receive enough cash to provide for their families, and the employer is relieved of having to comply with legal obligation. If the socialists succeed in disrupting the system, it may prove disastrous to the entire agriculture industry.

What Cortez and her associates fail to realize is one of Adam Smith's basic concepts. The merchant must always factor in his overhead costs in order to generate a reasonable market price. The labor costs, material costs and all other opportunity costs are taken into consideration. When the merchant is able to compete on the open market, it is reasonable to assume that his costs and prices are similar to those of his competitors. If his prices exceed those on the market, his options are extremely limited. He may find a remote area free of competition. He may rely on his reputation and customer allegiance for a short time. Other than that, he may well be forced out of business.

When the floodgates are open and aliens are granted citizenship status, they will be able to rely on equal opportunity laws to improve their wages. This will force agriculturalists into compliance, greatly increasing their labor costs. This would result in a reciprocal increase in prices, which is eventually passed on to consumers. If the farmer experiences a 25% rise in overhead, the cost of a basket of peppers may go from a dollar to $1.25. This may cause griping but little ado among customers. However, when the cost of a gallon of milk goes from $3 to $4, there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth across America.

Needless to say, it will be impossible for merchants to provide health insurance for field workers. This places an incalculable strain on the government-controlled health insurance system being promoted by Cortez. Millions of aliens may well apply within the first year of a socialist takeover. The impact on lower-class families depending on health care might well be catastrophic.

Regardless of the health care scenario, the spike in agricultural costs would have a ripple effect across the American economy. A rise in crop prices would create a surge in the livestock industry. Although cattle ranchers would not be immediately affected, the cost of pork and poultry would escalate along with the cost of feeding the animals. Even the fuel industry would feel the pinch as the increasing use of ethanol would be affected by a sharp rise in corn prices.

Abolishing the use of privatized prisons would have a seismic effect on the government budget as well. It is estimated that nearly 15% of US prisons are privatized, representing a 50% increase since the turn of the century. The number of unemployed workers would be the least of Cortez' problems. Of greater concern would be the number of prisoners that would be injected into the Federal and State penal systems. A recent estimate shows as many as 125,000 inmates would be displaced. 

The immediate problem would be the overcrowding effect as the prisoners are redistributed to facilities across the country. Most penologists would concur that overcrowding is one of the main contributing factors to prison violence. The quick fix solution offered by leftist State administrations over the decades has been an early release for inmates to reduce the prison population. Often this has been granted to violent felons who have demonstrated a pattern of good behavior. If this policy was extended to those showing borderline behavior, the possible consequences of releasing recividists could be grievous at best.

The revision of gun control statutes would pose a significant challenge to citizens' Constitutional rights. In cities such as Chicago and New York where regulations are among the strictest, it has been said that the only ones bearing arms are the cops and the criminals. For decades NYC had a law that provided for residents to possess rifles in their homes. The thought of a person having to bring a rifle to bear in the event of a home invasion is as comedic as it is pathetic. Gun permits are available, but the requirements are so stringent and the process so tedious that few even bother to apply. The bottom line is that the socialists want to remove as many firearms from citizens' possession as possible. 

What is perceived as ambiguity in the Second Amendment has been debated by pro-gun and anti-gun activists for decades. It seems inconceivable that no amendment has been made or a ruling by the Supreme Court to clarify the law.  The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." Polemicists have been dissecting this poorly-worded sentence for over a century. To most, it seems clear that 'the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed'. To others, the 'well-regulated militia' is the key phrase, providing for those active in the militia to be scrutinized by authorities. 

Therein lies the conundrum. For National Rifle Association advocates, the right of all citizens to bear arms is inalienable. For anti-gun lobbyists, 'regulation' opens the door for arbitrary restrictions as determined by State (and eventually Federal) governments.
