hi i slept through the utdr newsletter drop but i'm awake now and i looked at the video and tobert has now driven me nmore insane
"IF YOU SEE THIS TAXT THENS SOMETHING BROKEN WHERE IS THE PROMISE OF PERFECTION?"
"WHEN AN ERROR IS DETECTED I SEE THE INTENSITY OF MY FEARS SURGING THROUGH ME LIKE SUSPICIOUS WAVES"
my interpretation of this is that
1) he was promised perfection and definitely didn't get it, look at how glitchy he is now not to mention the whole puppet thing
2) i guess seeing errors/glitches makes him think of things that he's afraid of. wonder what those are
though "suspicious waves" is very, well, suspicious. is it the way that the fountain flows in waves? weird telephone signals? weird television signals? it's hard to determine
(i feel like showing spamton's regular sprite at the end was there to imply that this message has to do with him for real instead of the spamton value network spamtons)
also tried to determine the very last line on this warning message but i couldn't decipher it. here are some screenshots if you want to chew on it yourself. the sentence structures seem to be "_____ ____ __ ____!!! ___ ______ __!!!"
#harvey's new text tag#deltarune#spamton#deltarune speculation and unused stuff#edit: in regards to the two folks who said this might've not been a choice of tobert's and instead the rtvs team/#i think that's a completely fair thing to bring up but either way i still like the writing here; i think it's cool/#since it's about spamton i think it's still fun to connect what they came up with to him/

Really interested in what the plush tells us about Seam. I mean look, when it comes to merch one has to generally take a grain of salt and acknowledge that some aspects of it also come from the merch artist's/designer's interpretation of. However, Seam is an interesting case in that they're already a cryptic character with aspects we don't know about, and for some reason is getting a plush right now (not a bad thing, but it is interesting in the fact of long it took for them to get a plush and how Ch. 3+4 are coming sometime soon, probably early 2025). Also, they're getting a full body design, something we haven't seen in any official media, and a staff that we haven't seen them wield before (maybe the seam ripper?), and what details we can get about what Seam would look like in game.
Also, if the past plushies are any indication, the irony of using an actual seam ripper on Seam to check if they have any secrets in them will not be lost on me.
answering these asks slowly as i take time to marinate in my seam thoughts – it's interesting, isn't it? my safe bet has always been that while i don't like to speculate on the release, undertale's 10th anniversary seems most likely as well as the best bet for getting word out and getting promotion done in an eye-catching way. but regardless of that or if it means anything for the upcoming chapters specifically – it is still interesting! extracanonical material is always a bit of a grab-bag for me; i tend to rule out anything too far pre-release on personal principle (ie; toby's older tweets and posts from the early 2010s), because the man himself has said that the idea of deltarune has changed a lot since that time and besides that we don't know if many of them are even about deltarune at all. concept art is similar – fun for headcanons or jokes, but not intended to align with deltarune in its current state. but post-release is a bit different – there's unused text in the game that's clearly meant for players to snoop for, the spamton sweepstakes revealed a lot of important stuff, and there are things like ralsei's repeated association with flowers and this – seam repeatedly being associated with wielding a weapon – that are implied or alluded to in the game and therefore notable in extracanonical material. it's sort of like there's a little sign pointing out that we might want to keep an eye on these things.
(and as for the last bit – i'm also curious as to what seam has inside. given spamton and jevil's plushes didn't have anything, i wonder if seam will be the same?)

You know it's so cool how compared to the Light World in Deltarune, the Dark World just leans so much more into the RPG style mechanics to the point of having the average Darkner be at least a little aware of meta mechanics, like telling you to 'Press [C] to open Inventory!' or whatever else (and having Susie, a Lightner always react like 'Huh? What are they talking about?'). and it's a really cool thing because it insinuates that the darker you get, the more RPG like the game gets, and the more meta it gets as well. but then it goes even DEEPER
When you think about the the hypothetical Depths, when you think about Gaster and his metanarrative ties to everything and how it's speculated that the Depths are where he is and you think about how he reached out to Spamton and Jevil and potentially told them about them being in a game, and all that neat stuff tying into that idea of the darker you get the more aware you are of the true (in the meta sense) nature of things (haha like The Dark Truth).
but even further still.
When you think about Dess' hypothetical disappearance, and how people speculate she's also lost somewhere in the Depths, and how people think that the goner code in the game files? The 'unused' code, the creepy few lines asking for help, asking if they're alone?
I find it kind of wild that it could be implied that the 'darker' something is, the deeper it plays into the idea of Deltarune as a game itself, and the darkest we've seen someone get is surpassing the game, the game within the game and the meta narrative within the game and going straight to the unused code in the literal files. It's definitely been said, but I'm just collecting my ideas here. I just think it's neat lol

COMPILATIONS AND SPECULATIONS: Timeline Weirdness
The messed-up clock in the unused classroom
"All the coupons expired before the book's print date."

“For some strange reason, for just a brief moment... You thought you saw Susie glaring at you, coldly... But when you moved the glass away, You see her looking at you, smiling and making a rude gesture.”
The closet Dark World seemingly contains a waterfall frozen in time

"WELL, HAPPY NEW YEAR! OR, WAS IT THE OLD YEAR."

POSSIBLE: Gaster wants us to create "A NEW FUTURE" for Deltarune, perhaps implying there was an undesirable "old" future
POSSIBLE: "flashback_excerpt" (occurring in and talking about the present) (with a ticking clock)
POSSIBLE: Unused dialogue of Susie begging Kris to wake up (they're not friends yet)
youtube
SPECULATION CORNER
...gonna be honest I think I've covered my thoughts already between my "Winter Theory" stuff and "Recursion Theory" stuff.
basically, i think there's a lot of foreshadowing about Deltarune already having met with a terrible fate, and about reflections and recursions, which combined could imply a strange loop scenario.
in summary: "A strange loop is a cyclic structure that goes through several levels in a hierarchical system. It arises when, by moving only upwards or downwards through the system, one finds oneself back where one started. Strange loops may involve self-reference and paradox."
in short, it could be the new year and the old year simultaneously. susie could be kris' friend and their enemy. a current letter or an egg or a man behind a tree could already be gone. and noelle and kris could flashback to things that were currently happening. and the same story could play out over, and over, and over again. forever.
#i'm definitely missing some so will come back to edit#the clock ticking could just be noelle's watch related but thought i'd mention it just in case#compilations and speculations

Common Threads between Deltarune Chapters
As I’m sure you’ve noticed there are some common threads between the 2 chapters of Deltarune that we have, some obvious, some not, and right now I have decided to record those threads so we may predict the future chapters of Deltarune (and also so I can feel smug about being right if I am)
-Locations and Theme
The most obvious, I grouped them together because they’re usually connected. The Aesthetic is based off the objects in the Location and the Location is wherever the Dark Fountain is.
-The Location in Chapter 1 is an Unused Classroom in the School which is full of Toys and Games, which is the Aesthetic.
-The Location in Chapter 2 is the Computer Room in the Library, which is full of computers, which connects to the Aesthetic of The Internet
-The Location for Chapter 3 will be the Living Room in Toriel’s House. We technically don’t know what the Aesthetic will be, but judging by the still on TV the Aesthetic could only really be Television.
- The Locations for Chapters 4,5,6 and 7 are Unknown but due to the relatively small size of Hometown it should be pretty easy to find some Locations and speculate on some Aesthetics (feel free to also speculate as I'm sure you can come up with more ideas that I can.)
-Flower King- There’s a whole east wing we haven’t seen yet, also Flower Aesthetic also FLOWEY!!! ASGORE!!
-QC’s Diner- possibly when Catti and Jockington join the party? Can’t completely discard it.
-The pizza place is a possibility so I’m putting it down, it’s highly unlikely though.
-’Sans-possible Dark World Sans?
-Hospital- Is probably actually gonna be a Location. Medical Stuff Aesthetic. Rudy?
-Police Station- UNDYNE! UNDYNE! ALSO ALPHYS!
-Somewhere beyond the Blocked Road- We don’t know what’s over there so it’s entirely possible we could have a Location there.
-House of Worship- Also a likely Location. Holy Aesthetic. I’ll also put the Cemetery here b/e they’re right next to each other.
-Beyond the Mysterious Door- We’re going to find out something relating to it, there very well might be a Dark Fountain beyond there.
- The various characters’ houses we haven’t been in yet- Maybe. Papyrus?
- The entire town- it could make a good finale.
-Characters
New Chapters mean new characters! And through our characters journeys through the Dark Worlds, I’ve noticed a pattern in characters.
There is a character that goes through the majority of the character development and acts as the main focus of the chapter, the character that acts as comic relief and minion to the Ruler who gets character development in the latter half of the chapter, and there’s the Ruler who has power over the other 2 and ambiguous parallels someone in the first one’s life. Among these characters, 2 of them parallel each other in their relationship to the 3rd.
Then there’s the Dark Crystal Holder, we all know them. They had an encounter with ??? that changed their life and caused their fall from grace and the breakdown of their relationship with a side character, leaving them all alone. They act as bonus bosses. They also have an implied but never seen relationship to the Ruler. They also have some level of 4th wall awareness. They are usually based on something related to the Aesthetic that no one likes or discards.
- In Chapter 1, we have Susie as our Character Development, Lancer as our Comic Relief, and the King as our Ruler. Susie and the King parallel each other in their relationship to Lancer as he looks up to both of them for being “strong” and “cool”. The difference being the King quite willingly hurts Lancer while Susie refuses to do so. Due to the Queen’s parallel with Noelle’s mother, we can make a possible connection to what Susie’s family situation is like if they parallel the King. We have Jevil as our Dark Crystal Holder, his encounter with ??? made him view the whole world as a game, straining his relationship with Seam. He is based on the Joker card which is usually discarded from decks.
-In Chapter 2, we have Noelle as our Character Development, Berdly as the Comic Relief, and Queen as our Ruler. Berdly and Queen parallel each other in their relationship with Noelle, as they both use her for their own benefit despite truly caring about her. The difference being Berdly steps up to bat, drops all his bs and tries to save her in the Snowgrave route while the Queen passively sits by and barely appears until the end where all she does is let Noelle rest and immediately tries to find someone else to use. The Queen is implied to parallel Noelle’s mother. The Dark Crystal Holder is Spamton and his deal with ??? ends up straining his relationship with the Addisons. He is based on spam emails which everybody filters out.
- Chapter 3 isn’t out yet but we can pretty safely say that Toriel will end up being the Character Development as she fits in no other role here. Judging by the fact that Jevil mentioned the Queen in the chapter before she appears we can pretty safely say that since Spamton mentioned him ‘Mike” will end up being the Ruler.
- Judging by the fact that Catti and Jockington are the only other classmates with sprites it seems pretty likely that they will be acting as the Character Development and Comic relief, respectively, in a future chapter.
-Theme
The Theme is a sort of thread that runs through each respective chapter that ties together the Character Development, the Comic Relief, the Ruler, and the Dark Crystal Holder. In fact the Dark Crystal Holder usually seems to embody the Theme
-In Chapter 1, the Theme is Your Choices Don’t Matter. Susie actively states this when we first meet her. All of the ways the characters develop in this chapter do not change no matter what you do. Jevil sort of embodies this Theme as when he met ???, he realized he was in a game world and thus His Choices Didn’t Matter so he could do whatever he wanted to with no real consequences.
-In Chapter 2 the Theme is Control. Noelle is usually Controlled by others and by the end of the Normal route she learns to take Control of her own life whereas in the Weird route she is Controlled by the Player. Berdly tries to take Control of his life by building his identity around his “smarts” so he won’t be forgotten ever again. He also unintentionally Controls Noelle by acting as her “knight” and generally steamrolling her when she tries to talk. Queen also tries to Control Noelle along with everyone else as she believes it’s the only way to fulfill her function. The difference is Berdly tries to stand up for her when You are Controlling her while the Queen, despite claiming to care for Noelle and acting motherly towards her, is nowhere to be found. Spamton acts as a sort of embodiment for this Theme, he’s desperately trying to gain Control of his own life while being Controlled himself

Sometimes I feel like we overestimate Toby just a bit, like there's a lot of speculation over things that might be accidental.
However, that sprite being left unused and in the files?
That's ABSOLUTELY in purpose, its either a clue or a red herring (i really hope its not the latter) but i love when toby does this kinda stuff. Theorizing about unused content is kinda the thing deltarune was born from.
exactly. we're all left wondering is this canon? is it no longer? what does it mean? and it's such a good way to keep a fandom busy in the absence of new material. deltarune was presumably created by gaster, who basically only appears in content you have to hack the game to see (i know you technically can get mysteryman and the g followers naturally through fun values but. it's SUPER rare), so this fandom is basically destined to go through the files and stuff with a fine-toothed comb and i think that's beautiful💙

Gaster, Grandpa Semi, and the Deltarune eggs.
Okay so i have a nutty theory. i have no idea if this is actually the case or even go anywhere but....
what if grandpa semi, the unused and cut character cut early on in undertale’s development is gaster? it would make sense, considering 2 things. 1, how late into development gaster was added (evidence of him being added late into development here https://www.reddit.com/r/Underminers/comments/3wqqez/i_believe_ive_solved_gaster/ ), and 2, gaster is the embodiment of the idea of getting removed from reality, and if you look at grandpa semi, thats what happened to him. he was effectively cut from the game and became forgotten in the lore, hell from my knowledge the only piece of content that even references him in the final game is a sound called “snd_grandpatemi“ that plays here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ty--2NnFbWY
beyond that i dont think there’s anything else in the game files in the final game that even references grandpa semi. HOWEVER gaster on the other hand? yeah, there’s a buncha stuff, and we all know what that stuff is, the gaster followers, mysteryman, the stable, stuff like that.
Sooooooooooo who’s to say that in the lore, Grandpa Semi was gaster before he fell into his own creation? It’d make sense looking at it from that angle.
now, the deltarune eggs. boy i have a buncha theories on theme so this is very speculative so take everything i say here with a grain of salt.
what if the eggs are both eggs, and devices that limit gaster’s powers? the more eggs you take out of the dark world, the stronger gaster becomes. Egg could also be an acronym. i’ve debated on what it could be, but I’ve landed on something i think it could be. Entraping Grandpa Gaster. maybe it’s a stretch, but i do feel like it’s good food for thought, especially since if Gaster is Grandpa Semi, calling him “Grandpa Gaster” could make some sense.

yesterday i noticed that in one of the swatchlings' bits of dialogue, they mention that the mansion used to be a home for upper-class citizens:
which to me suggests that that's no longer the purpose of the mansion, and that made me think of the possibility of swatch and the swatchlings being in the mansion before queen*. the same swatchling was definitely around at the time it Was for upper-class citizens since they also mention spamton and his habits when he still lived there
i guess they were all still butlers, but for many darkners rather than just queen. the rooms are now used for lightners instead of darkners now that it's been repurposed. i feel like that's probably the silver lining for swatch and the swatchlings despite having to now take orders from queen, since they're all very dedicated to their role as darkners
cap'n also chimes in with "until queen came around" when scc talks about themselves, which i think is a decent confirmation that queen wasn't always around in cyber world generally speaking either
*it also suggests that all of the upper-class citizens who once lived there had to be evicted at some point, which would make more sense as to how any of the addisons knew what day spamton was getting evicted since it may have made the news

i just... i can't help but feel like it's significant
[INANE DELTARUNE WEBBED SITE RAMBLING BELOW]
the left colorful one plays a regular version of ralsei's CD bagel jingle and the right grayscale one plays a lower pitched version of it.
they're both accompanied by a really specific jingle as well, one that i don't think has been shown before?? i can't help but think it's the weird route proceeding and cancellation noises for chapter 4..
ALSO M NOT MAKING THIS UP B DEVICE_FRIEND APPEARED AFTER I CLICKED A LOT OF CATS. IT JUST APPEARED AND THEN ZOOMED IN AND THEN TOOK ME BACK TO THE HOMEPAGE. WHENEVER I GO BACKWARDS IT'S PERMANENTLY FRIEND-IFIED. GIRL HELP ME!!!!!! IT HAS DIFFERENT EYE COLORS NOW!!!!

i'm thinking again about spamton's canon relationships and feeling frustrated about how much people have ignored his canon relations with swatch in favor of pretending that swatch is this Fucked Up Evil Dickhead who never cared about spamton even though spamton says in no uncertain terms that they used to be friends and the reason why they aren't anymore is because of swatch's allegiance to queen
like even if you don't like swatchton, the fact that they used to be chill with each other is an undeniable fact. not to mention that swatch is the only character aside from mike that he doesn't get really angry at when asked about them. like yeah he's miffed but he's being coy about it too
anyway i really hope we get more of swatch in the coming chapters. since they're required to be in castle town no matter the outcome, they'll definitely have some more things going on which i'm excited about. i want to know more about them......

made a realization the other day about spamton's "I USED TO BE NOTHING BUT THE E_MAIL GUY, NOW I'M THE [[It Burns! Ow! Stop! Help Me! It Burns!]] GUY!" line. dedicated spamt-fans know that the japanese version of the line phrases the brackets part more specifically, saying that "it's too bright, my eyes hurt"
there's a line in his regular fight that mirrors this:
before he says this, he says he's "never seen a heart-shaped object like that before", meaning that this bit is likely in reaction to looking at kris's soul. that made me think about him pointing out the soul the first time:
the soul is described in other parts of the game as being able to shine and glow. he describes kris having "the light", which calls back to the "it's too bright, my eyes hurt" thing. because of all this, i'm thinking maybe that's what spamton was recalling in his shop dialogue about being the "it burns" guy. him seeing a soul* for the first time may be something that fucked him up a bit
*(possibly multiple at once? he seems to be able to see susie's soul as well since he says "SOMEONE LEFT [There] SOULS, [Lyeing Around......]")

(source, please listen to the tracks here they're so cool!!!!)
the fact that the NEO boss in deltarune wasn't always supposed to have to do with spamton is driving me fucking bonkers
call me crazy but i think it's lending more credence to my theory with spamton_house.ogg where you were originally supposed to explore his own house, and that the basement in this chapter wasn't always the mansion's basement and was his instead. always good to remind that the filename for the mansion's basement is "spamton_basement" instead of "mansion_basement" (the other mansion tracks have mansion as their prefix)
toby also starts the page that these are from with "creating music first can be a useful way to figure out the identity and tone of a boss or scene." so it's more hard to ignore the music filenames with that in mind now

the big acid theory post
(i am sorry for how long this is)
couple weeks ago someone on discord asked if i could dm them my gripes about acid theory, since they hadn't seen any criticisms of it. i was very surprised to hear that so of course i did what any normal deltarune fan would do and wrote an essay (aka complained for several paragraphs). posting for reference sake so i have all my thoughts in one place and never make a post about this topic again
----------
basically my criticisms for acid theory are on all tiers/interpretations of it as an life-changing event where he ends up disfigured. i don't think it makes much sense to happen for multiple reasons
for it to happen from a narrative perspective i don't really buy it. spamton's downfall is already tragic in that he lost his friends, his fame and fortune, and got evicted. in regards to the mansion, the eviction itself is the tragedy, in particular that it's implied that it wasn't only him that got evicted that day. a swatchling says that the mansion used to be for high-class citizens. the rooms that were once for these citizens are now for lightners, so it wasn't just that he had no money, he was gonna get kicked out anyway.
i mention this cause a common interp of acid theory is that the mansion staff threw him in as punishment, and i think there's little evidence for that given the circumstances. a while ago i went on this whole spiel about how mischaracterizing queen and/or swatch to try and support the theory makes it weaker to me but that's additional stuff
and about the acid as a threat, it's hard to take it seriously when the majority of mentions of it are for gags or game design-related. for example, the gold berdly statue being dropped into the acid slowly dips in because if it just sank instantly, you could very easily miss it. the swatchling being stranded on the island is a goof with anticipating a battle the moment you set the bridge out for them.
for spamton falling into the acid as an explanation for whatever caused him to be a physical puppet (this is going off of taking the addisons' word that he was an addison too), it doesn't really line up. it doesn't make a lot of sense from a lore standpoint; there's no evidence to suggest that the addisons look like puppets underneath. i mean it's an interesting hc, but to assume it's canon that that's why spamton looks like a puppet now is kinda just filling in blanks.
that one q&a answer where spamton talks about there being some kind of "spamton method" he used every day and became "big" to me implies that it was some kind of slow transformation into a puppet. it's not much to go off of, but it's a lot more compelling than taking a tumble in acid. there's more mystery there and might even explain why spamton showed up to the mansion less over time
i think at this point it's clear that at some point he did get pushed in by someone, as stated in the spa attire from the sweepstakes and one of his valentine's cards, but to me it seems like it was an example of him being mistreated by the other rich residents in the mansion. before he talks about getting pushed in a pool, he mentions that he's gotten swirlies at the mansion, and to me it seems like he's still really bothered by his treatment there which is why he mopes about it.
queen mentioning that the acid can shrink people is also played for jokes, even susie in the ch3 video saying that they'll die if they drink the acid is played for jokes (also i think it would probably hurt them cause they're lightners and not cyber darkners)
anyway, if acid theory ends up being directly confirmed without any cryptic wording and all that i would still dislike it. i just don't think it fits with spamton or ch2's themes and it's randomly dark in a way that's not appealing to me. i like psychological horror more and the puppetfication thing already fits that. i know it's definitely appealing to others and i don't think people are bad for liking it per se, but it's not my kinda thing at all nor do i think it's canon, so i personally want nothing to do with it

thinking about swatch, lots of different things about them but in particular i'm thinking about the common interp that they chose to sell spamton's merch at the color cafe, out of spite or what have you
i'm of the onion that it was a decision that queen made. it just goes in line with the reoccurring thing of swatch listening to her every order. i don't think she made the decision out of spite either since that doesn't line up with her personality; she probably didn't know what else to do with them
does that explanation make it fine for them to sell spamton's stuff? not really, it's still a dick move. does it say something about swatch and how they feel about spamton? potentially. i personally interpret it as swatch being indifferent about it. but it makes more sense than them making the decision themselves is my point
idk i think that the bowties were repossessed by the mansion and that's what the "spamton begs the audience to stop taking the furniture out of his room" line is implying, that they took his stuff when he was evicted
i also think that queen might've taken over big shot autos or at least kept the assets/inventory from it, judging by the fact that she seems to own one of the cars near his shop. she also implies that she's driven more than one of them since she expects the car to explode
..not to mention that one of the swatchlings said that spamton stopped using his room at some point. i wonder if the mansion staff thought that he wasn't going to return at all and just shrugged and took what they thought he was leaving behind
that's my deltarune ramble for today. deltaramble. there is something else i just realized but i Have to get a little more sleep

in regards to the post i just made, here's a bonus deltarune basement fact: digital roots, which is the mansion's basement theme, is named "spamton_basement" in the game files as opposed to "mansion_basement" (see the filenames "mansion" for the mansion's main theme and "mansion_entrance" for the entrance for comparison)
along with spamton_house being extant it makes me insane i'm still convinced that he had a house at some point in development and that house was Fucked Up. still can't piece together why tobert decided to use your best nightmare's melody for these tracks though
