[KHAR'SHAN] Planetary Government to Free 12 Million Slaves

via The Raptor In Flight, True and Piercing Its Gaze Author: Dharak Cer'cath In the chaos of post-Reaper War Khar'shan, millions of slaves were trapped in legal limbo as their owners were missing, dead and lacking an identifiable next of kin, offworld in anti-slavery nations, or otherwise unable to take possession of their slaves. For the past decade, the government of Khar'shan has faced a dilemma of what to do with these "ownerless slaves". However, today the Khar'shan Ascendancy recently announced that they intended to free twelve million of these ownerless slaves, all of whom are batarians that have had no identified owner for at least the past three years. What's more, the government plans to increase their caste status to replenish the population of castes that took the heaviest casualties in the Reaper War, in particular the heavily-depleted Warrior Caste. An additional nine million ownerless slaves are to be sold to the highest bidder, with the revenues going to fund construction work, improved healthcare for the population of Khar'shan, and labor retraining programs for the newly-freed batarians. The Ascendancy's Minister of Labor, Goronak Kebgohal, claimed that the measure was necessary to repair Khar'shan's economy and bring in a source of new Warrior Caste recruits to the Batarian Confederacy's military, but many Na'Hesit are outraged at the new law, seeing it as a slippery slope that could lead to the government taking away their own slaves, or even as a step towards the complete abolition of slavery itself. Even some Ub'Hesit, while agreeing with the principle of freeing slaves, think the law goes to far. Krenna Demkeral, a warrior caste citizen of Hranska, told one of out reporters that: "I wanted them to be free, but that doesn't mean that any of them should be our equals or, Pillars forbid, our superiors. Granting them anything higher than the Worker Caste will undermine the very foundations of the caste system itself. Does the government want to see our planet turned into Erszbat?" Individuals who believe they are the rightful owners of any slaves intended to be freed or auctioned have forty days to submit proof of ownership to the Ministry of Labor.
