(click thumbnails for large images) In light of International Women's Day this weekend, I wanted to share a very important project by Despina Rangou and Signe Emma, two MA students at the Royal College of Art's School of Communication. I had the pleasure of contributing to Signe and Despina's project, and it is truly worth checking out. Click below to read more.
The project started whilst counting the iconic female graphic designers who were featured in the book '100 Years of Design at the Royal College of Art'. We immediately noticed that the number of women was exceptionally lower than their male colleagues, and decided to investigate the subject further by getting the figures in the most popular directory books, conferences, competitions and studios that featured exemplary, classic, contemporary and radical graphic designers. What we couldn't understand is the fact that there are A LOT of female practitioners, a conclusion most prevalent in the microcosmos of education: more female students than male. Then, why aren't these women being published, and/or featured in conferences? Why are they not winning awards? Is it the fact that their work does not meet the requirements of the industry? Or that it is male dominated and prejudiced by older generations of graphic designers? Again, why do these women need to be published in a book only about Women in Graphic Design? We compiled a set of questions from our contributors Mimi Zeiger, Tori Hinn and Feminist Wall, that need to be addressed at the industry and set out to get some answers at Mapping Futures, a symposium about the future of graphic design with educational delegates from around the UK, that took place in November 2013 at the Royal College of Art.
